Fun facts. They brought the body home to Norway. He is lying today, buried under a street in Trondheim city. Archaeologists know exactly where the tomb is, but they believe he should be allowed to lie in peace.

Not one of the greatest Viking Kings of history. But thee greatest of all time, Harold Sigurdsson (King Hardrada.) He is totally the ultimate adventurist. Living his life on the edge since fifteen. He goes from being almost anonymous to the leader of a small group commando raids. Tricks impregnable fortresses into letting him in. Commanding armies until one fateful day. I thought I'd like to see the movie.

It’s intriguing to think how two arrows determined the course of history, the first being the arrow that slew Harald Sigurdsson, and the second being the arrow that laid low Harold Godwinson. But for that first arrow, the Norse might have prevailed that day against the English, and the Normans would have found themselves facing a very different foe. 1066 was an eventful year, to put it mildly.

You do know that 'Norman' was how the French referred to Vikings (ie- 'Northmen') and that William was a descendant of Rolf Gånger (aka Rollo), the Danish Viking who agreed to stop raiding after Charles the Simple offered him the region now -- obviously -- known as Normandy. So, in reality, William's Norse heritage meant that England was still conquered by someone with Scandinavian roots.

@@jerrysherman1025actually Charles the Simple only offered him Amiens and Rouen, county not a whole province
Amiens sat at the mouth of the river Seine guarding the way to Paris...
Rollo kept to his agreement to Charles to protect and not raid further into Normandy
After Charles was deposed by his own relatives
Rollo then decide that his agreement was void
and took over large parts of what is known as Normandie today
many assume that he was offered Normandy as is depicted in fictional accounts
but Charles was not that Simple
and had no intention of offering such a huge land.
it's a testament to the strength of Rollo and descendants including William
that they continued to hold onto such a large area that was not granted to them

many comments here about lack of historical accuracy
    and how unfortunate...
having tried to research and write a historically accurate script
the research is extremely time consuming
and writers don't hav e the time nor care.
they use a few bare facts
and quickly write out a dramatic story. period.
    history takes time
differing accounts need to be read and assessed.
    fascinating and beautiful process
but not many ready for the labor of love
    when trying to get paid.

He certainly played his huge part in history of the english...
it is said that due to the battles against Hardrada,
the Godwinson royal forces were fatigued and distracted
which aided William the Conqueror in winning England,
by attacking in a timely fashion,
soon after Hardrada was defeated by Godwinson
    without Hardrada
it's possible that William would have been defeated
and not be the so called progenitor of many english royals to this day.
William is the great grandfather of Henry II,
great great grandfather of Richard the Lion hearted
    ancestor to many famed leaders
    including Edward III, Henry V
this is not to diminish Hardrada's astonishing career
    and
survival in his youthful exile from his norwegian home
one might say that luck is on the side of some, like William the Conqueror
whose grand daughter Mathilda is essentially the founder of the English famed Plantagenet Dynasty
i'll winds foiled Williams first attempt to conquer England
    before Hardrada's arrival
and it could have been the other way around,
with Hardrada benefitting from Godwinson being distracted by William s army
and Hardrada eventually marching in to
    lLondon to be crowned.

I'm definitely in the minority after reading the comments, but he came across as a vicious psychopath whose ruthless ambition caused death and misery for thousands. Bravery is about facing something that scares you and heroism is about benefiting others, whereas Harold seemed to revel in violence and was only doing it for personal gain. An impressive warrior yes, but not someone to be admired.

I wanted to know how accurate he was portrayed in Vikings Valhalla. Did he really know Leif Ericsson? Dis they even live during the same period? Many questions I guess, but that's just my way. Great video, well done

Vikings and Vikings Valhalla are very fictional...
even though Vikings is actually one my favorite shows of all time,
the history is pretty much jumbled up
      with Rollo ,who i supposedly
      Ragnars brother
in reality Ragnar was at least a generation ahead
      and in no way related
no one is even certain that Ragnar was a real person, whereas Rollo was real
and progenitor of the Viking dynasty that became the Normans, ancestor to
      William the Conqueror
so it is doubtful that Hardrada knew Erickson,
the series puts all the most fascinating characters of history together in one room 😂❤

    • @Melodeath00
      @Melodeath00 4 месяца назад

While all the main characters are historical figures, the timeline is very fucked up.
Leif Eriksoon was of the same generation as Svein Forkbeard.
Olaf Haraldson and Cnut were one generation younger.
Harald Hardrada was 2 generations younger.
Why is Cnut already king of anything while his father is still alive? Forkbeard was the one who led the invasion of England that was depicted in the show, he was the new king of England, and this happened 10+ years after the massacres of the 1st episode, as opposed to 1 year like in the show.
Cnut became king of England after his father died, and only became king of Denmark after his younger brother who inherited that kingdom died a couple of years later.
Olaf Haraldsson took Norway after the death of Svein Forkbeard and ruled it for 15 years, as opposed to dying in a duel with a girl while still being a Jarl. He eventually lost the kingdom to a combination of Cnut invading and his nobles rebelling at the same time, and died in battle 2 years later trying to win the kingdom back. A 15 years old Harald Siggurdson (Hardrada) was present at this battle, as mentioned in the video.
The massacre in ep 1 happened in 1002. Svein Forkbeard taking England and dying after 5 weeks, making Cnut the Great inherit the throne happened in 1014. The death of Olaf Haraldsson and the beginning of Harald Siggurdson's travels to Rus and The Byzantine Empire happened in 1030.

      if he had defeated Godwinson,
he would have had to face off with William later known as the Conqueror
      who defeated Godwinson months after
      Godwinson defeated Hardrada..
so that would be definitely a fascinating what if story!
what an epic battle that would have been !
Hardrada v. William of Normandy , also part Viking blood
if we had a time machine and could change the trajectory of that arrow ...
who would have triumphed and be progenitor of all
      English royals today

@Wafflefan340... idk Harold is suppose to be one of the best Berserker Vikings in the world on the show and Leaf is about the same size of him. Not to mention Leafs dad on the show was a legendary berserker Viking and leaf himself went berserker at the end of the first season and wrecked a whole bunch of dudes. They will probably have him use his wits instead of brawn just by judging how the show has played out so far. I can’t wait to see the scene though no matter who it is. It’s my favorite tale. I hate that they stab the guy in the back with spears from under the bridge like come on he’s one guy vs a whole army the least you can do is meet him face to face you cowards lol

I love history and from the Roman empire all the way up threw Charlemagne into the Viking error into the crusades through the ottoman empire all the way up to Napoleon taking over Europe I would not say I'm an expert but I would say I know alot and to me he is definitely one of the most polarizing Vikings in history I'd say on achievement toughness and conquer he's top 3 but it's up for debate he could be number one he could be number five but he is definitely one of the best 💯❤️💪
