He goes from being almost anonymous to the leader of a small group commando raids. Tricks impregnable fortresses into letting him in. Commanding armies until one fateful day. It’s intriguing to think how two arrows determined the course of history, the first being the arrow that slew Harald Sigurdsson, and the second being the arrow that laid low Harold Godwinson. But for that first arrow, the Norse might have prevailed that day against the English, and the Normans would have found themselves facing a very different foe. 1066 was an eventful year, to put it mildly.
As a Scandinavian, but also as a descendant of William the Conqueror, I'd say, that England would have been better off with a Viking victory at Stamford bridge.
You do know that 'Norman' was how the French referred to Vikings (ie- 'Northmen') and that William was a descendant of Rolf Gånger (aka Rollo), the Danish Viking who agreed to stop raiding after Charles the Simple offered him the region now -- obviously -- known as Normandy. He eventually lost the kingdom to a combination of Cnut invading and his nobles rebelling at the same time, and died in battle 2 years later trying to win the kingdom back.
