This is an amazing demonstration of exactly how many places modern technology and computing helps at every stage of development for a project like this. 3D printing scale models of complex components to show how best to assemble them is inspired!
I am very impressed at the professional team actively working on this great project. The new tools of computer drawings and modelling are a great help and will result in a superb loco.
What a collection of very clever, talented and enthusiastic people! Incredibly inspiring and exciting!!! Loved the detail presented here; thank you so much! Prince of Wales will be hugely fantastic and well loved when she’s complete. And running! Go well!!
Would love to have seen a weekly update video from the Trust as I feel that would go a long way to getting people on board and showcasing what you guys have done to so meny more people as it truly is impressive not to have done this once but exempting to do it for a 2nd and plans for a 3rd do keep the good work up
This is SO AMAZING, and is literally the first time I've ever heard about this project, (outside of marginal murmurs in the U.S.). Am I to understand that you're not only restoring this locomotive, but that you're completely re-inventing the machine from the ground-up? WOW, am I impressed!!! You've taken Alco's design, (back in the early 1940's) for their 4-12-2 / 3 cylinder monsters which ran on the Union Pacific Railroad here in the States and are building a brand new 21st Century Steam locomotive. How cool is that? As we both know, the U.P. engines were doomed with problems from the start. The most prevalent being shop forces "hated" those things when they came in for Class 3 repairs in that the middle cylinder was almost impossible to reach, thus facilitating enormous down time and operating expense, (not to mention wheel base restrictions which you don't have here). Your technological expertise and pure determination is outstanding !!! Do you and our "T1 Society" talk to each other? Oh wait, I didn't read that part of the article printed in Trains magazine, but just did. Sorry for my ignorance.
Maybe it's sad, but it's also natural. Boilers of that particular blend are long gone. There's no use for them anymore, therefore no skilled labour exists to recreate them.
We have explained, often enough, that only East Germany continued to develop and refine the art of welding large locomotive boilers. If such facilities had been available in the UK it might have made tendering easier (construction of the latest pair of boilers was put out to tender).
@@aserta You say that but it's not exactly true. Britain has, I believe, more heritage railways on average than most other countries. Railways that are still operating, and have plenty of steam engines on ticking boiler certificates. One would think that there would be a business somewhere in this country that serves their needs.
It’s a shame Covid has hindered progress but hey ho. Hopefully the P2’s apple green LNER livery might inspire other main line express steamers to run with pre grouping liveries. I see the Duchess is back in LMS livery and looking amazing! I wonder if the inclusion of the European electrics might be a hint that the P2 could be taking a trip to Paris (like Cock o the North) and/or Germany to do a high speed run…
First, this is a truly brilliant project. I'm not an engineer, but am intrigued by the amount of new design and redesign you've undertaken. How much have you been able to use the original drawings, or have many of these been lost? I can see how the electrics need to be to modern standards, but assume that you didn't have detailed original designs available for the valve gear either? Or is it that you need to redesign everything because you're using slightly different materials or manufacturing methods? On the subject of the cylinder block, and noting the design changes mentioned here and in another video, does this mean that this will be a significantly more powerful loco than the original, or will it just be slightly more efficient? (Or maybe able to cope with lower quality coal?)
Will the existing boiler on Tornado be returned to Germany for refurbishment and are there any future developments or design alterations needed for deterioration of home based uk coal sources? A wonderful project ,when I think about all those boilers lying in Darlington and Doncaster in the 60’s some how very sad.
Out of curiousity, what whistle have you put on 2007? I remember hearing somewhere that she'll have the same whistle as 2001 when she was out shopped, can someone confirm please?
They've said in the past 3403 will have an Army name in keeping with the theme of having locos named after an Air Force squadron (60163) and a Navy aircraft carrier (2007). Personally I thought Bantam Chick would've been a better choice keeping in line with the originals, Bantam Cock and Bantam Hen, but its their loco at the end of the day really. "Anon" is just the placeholder and not 3403's real name.

She's coming along so damn well, cheers to all team members and people in charge of the operation, grand stuff. Absolutely brilliant

Great stuff. Look forward to more updates. Can’t wait to see it run.
Keep up the great work. Would love to see a video walk around the Prince of Wales.

I'm really looking forward to seeing P2 2007 Prince of Wales on the mainline 😃

I love me some updates, very interesting progress
wow you lot are making cracking progress. well done keep it up chaps.
Great work but it's sad to think no place in the UK can build boilers anymore considering all the big workshops that carried out this kind of work.
Maybe it's sad, but it's also natural. Boilers of that particular blend are long gone. There's no use for them anymore, therefore no skilled labour exists to recreate them.

@@MrJoeyWheeler If there isn't, there's a business opportunity lol.

Now that would be something pretty amazing to see! Thank heavens we have one of the smallest loading gauges in the world so we can go most places.

Yes, the boiler will go Meiningen and will have the upgrades used in the next two boilers applied at the same time.
Nice video. Are there any plans to bring Tornado or Prince of Wales to Germany?
Would love to see a 21st-century streamline

Is the new loco going to have proper roller bearings fitted throughout instead of troublesome oil lubricated metal on metal bearings?
Can we do a working W1 next?
When will the Prince steam for the first time? What routes can I expect to see it thundering around?
2030, at best! Or even maybe, never!
@Łukasz Walczak it's expected to be complete by 2025 but ok
Busy bees! :)
I know this is about 2007...but ibam interested in knowing about 3403s name since as far as i know this is the first time its beem seen as anon
In an earlier convention presentation they showed the sprite for 3403 with the name "Anon" aswell
It’s still yet to be named. I would guess at Bantam Drake, or King Charles III.

I think 'Anon' stands for 'Anonymous' as the name, to my knowledge , has not yet been decided.
Just feel lucky that some 'wag' hasn't pushed for "Trainy McTrainface", or some other "Internet funny" name.
