Bill needs to learn to reign in his impulses. Any guest can just completely avoid ANY question by just bashing SJW's and Bill will be happily strung along.

The racial bias is part of the status quo- rightwing sjw system. But oh no! Lets have a total freakout about college kids getting out of line sometimes (in an honest effort to do good). I am independent, leaning towards the democrats and I want to write here a few things about state of our country and politics, because I can't take it anymore. Bill's pograms are so stimulating for me, they always provoke me to think more intensively, but in the current situation, it comes to extremes.
The situation is like a nightmare. The country is divided terribly, everyone yells at each other on twitter.
For the first time, I am going to vote for Democrats, because I can't stand what the current GOP has done with this country, with our values, with the social fabric. And no, don't answer me that ''two sides'' are guilty. No. Facts are facts. Current GOP is a mafia, a criminal organization and a cult, with Trump as their God. They are insane.
The first thing I can't stand - hypocrisy and projection, because conservatives do / say things that they accuse democrats / liberals of.
Trumptards, like a broken record, repeat that they have enough of 'rich celebrities' who talk about politics or how people should vote.
So whether a person is successful actor/artist, this person has the full right to express opinions when he/she wants and how he/she likes it, because they are not some imaginary/fake people, but the same people as you&me, in the end acting / writing music etc. is a job, yes, you can get very rich in show-business, just like in sports, in banking or setting up your own company, but that does not change the fact that these famous people are just people first, with rights, like everyone, right to free speech and opinions. Even foreign actors are also often citizens of this country (even if they were not born here, many have citizenship, children who were born here) who pay taxes (unlike Trump) and have full rights, just as CEOS, doctors, taxi drivers, secretaries, etc. So You, Trumptards, you have no right to say who can give an opinion and who can't !! This is not (yet) a dictatorship.
I laugh at the irony that you - who chose as the president, the rich celebrity Trump - forbid other celebrities to speak in the public debate. Famous people have always been involved in various debates, not only political ones. And there is something else.
''None of the stupid celebrities even understand what it feels like to be low middle class person'' - Trumptards often whine. Do you know that many, in fact majority of the best actors come from great poverty or lower class ? Read their stories!! Marlon Brando - his father was an alcoholic, the family was poor, Hilary Swank with family lived in a trailer park, Christian Bale - he started acting, coz in fact he was only source of income in his family for a long time, he was child actor, but it was no fun at all, he had to provide for the entire family since he was very young, because his mother lost her job as a circus performer and his father struggled too, and there are countless stories like these, among actors !! If someone thinks, that the work of an actor / in show business is easy, let them ask child stars. It's a very hard job, often 24/7 night and day, physically and emotionally damaging. So actors in majority, actually know perfectly well what they are talking about, because they worked hard for their success, unlike Trump, who got millions from his daddy and never had to worry about the money. It's you, Trump fanatics, who elected as the president a rich celebrity, a guy who has never built anything himself !!
Ivanka - spoiled brat, who got everything from her daddy, who is himself spoiled brat. In this family, no one knows what real, hard work means. They made a fortune on real estate scams, and now they eat gold for breakfast, and if it were not for their corruption and lies (everyone who is from New York, knows Trumps are guilty of tax offenses/crimes for decades, it will eventually come out) - they would only be guilty of shallow consciousness and bad taste. But Trump and his family of criminals are destroying the social fabric of this country, democracy, freedom of the press, which is the daily target of the attacks of this idiot president. And his daughter, as someone here has already noticed, is a pseudo-intellectual, who has learned only a little better than her father to pretend to be someone she is not. She can construct long sentences that make sense in contrast to her daddy, but she is completely devoid of empathy, sense of morality , truth and real duty, just like her daddy. There is a perfect description of Trump, circulating on the internet, which is in fact suitable for his whole family: ''Trump is a dumb man's idea of a smart man, a poor man's idea of a rich man, and a weak man's idea of a strong man''.
But the hypocrisy of Trump fanatics and conservatives in general, doesn't end here. Because the core lies in what this clown is doing with this country, with norms, democracy, not to mention that he lies day after day. And so many idiots still believe him!
The underlying problem is what Barry Goldwater said about the affect of Evangelicals in politics: because religious institutions are not interested in debate or discussion due to the existence of fixed dogma and doctrine, it means that when this mindset is mixed with politics compromise will become a dirty word. You can't compromise on the Bible, and therefore you cannot compromise on conservatism because conservatism = Christianity (in their mind). What's needed is better education, but how do you educate people who think they are already fully informed and in the know?
Also, I understand his supporters will largely remain loyal to him until the bitter end. Two reasons: Trump's real appeal to his supporters isn't the policies he's pushed and failed to enact, it's the fact that he is the avatar for all of his supporters hatred and bigotry; His followers know two things. 1) Trump is "owning the libs."and (2) no one likes to admit that they've been conned.
the GOP is actively recruiting fascists and white supremacists into their ranks. This is the natural progression from Goldwater's, then Nixon's, "Southern Strategy," to Lee Atwater's, then Newt Gingrich's tutorials on how to code racist language to get the resentment vote.
What has happened during the last 20 years to start the hate mongering, conspiracy theories and religious zealots to the forefront of our nation. The first time I saw the old white man frothing was when Bill O'reilly started yelling about, "Feminazi". I remember this because a long time friend and man I had worked for started drinking at night while watching Bill O'reilly and would then call me and yell hate. Then came, the Alex Jones Show and Rush Limbaugh fame plus a surge of FOX News. We now have Right Wing (not conservative) millionaires everywhere spewing lies, conspiracies, hate and fear on radio, television and their own online news. An element of our society is addicted to this non-stop trash. Just listen to the CPAC junk being said. Are they talking about science? Important issues by experts on international policy? authorities who study the best way to produce less expensive healthcare? economist? Do they want to hear from those who keep us safe? NO, they are talking about AOC and hamburgers! They are talking about fear of races? They are not talking empathy for the pain they cause but how to turn it around and say they are the victim ("no you are racist"). They talk about how to demean and hurt people. They talk about guns and violence. They talk about revenge. They make the rest of us look like lambs waiting for slawter and if we even raise our heads to protest they laugh and yell, threaten and make up new conspiracies, hate and fear. Most are laughable except they have taken over the Republican Party and Trump is the ring leader being fed by hate mongers who are happy to make a buck off those susceptible to extremism.
Listened to Trump at CPAC - He is a horrible person.

He also mentions that it was brave of his guests to come to his show when they aren't dems/libs many times. Even in this episode after that he says "the lion's den". This indicates that the place is a challenge to the guest and not the invite. He also shouts back at the crowed when they start acting like children. Notice in this episode, for example, he asks people clearly to clap at the end for his 'non popular' guest in that room.

Long time fan, first time commenter. Yowza, this was the most conservative I've ever seen the show. Bill wants to know how to beat Trump, 'how do we appeal to independents, the party's going too far left'' but look around, the center of the country is left, distrust corp., medicare for all, education, and no mention of young people at all from a panel with as many years as America between them. The way to their hearts is clear, criticize entrenched power and money in politics, not the far left and SJWs. The question is not are social justice warriors really like that, sure some are, but why do you, Bill, need the spectre of them as your enemy?
Shocked to see the left defended here only by Atler, who's dismissed ("If we completely agree why are we arguing!" ffs is this Fox Noise? Let him finish his dang thought). Rothman's book is a Reddit thread couched in intellectual hot air. See him scratching his neck nervously when criticized? He knows exactly what he's doing. When white dudes talk in circles about "equal treatment under the law" this is so clearly code for, 'Don't criticize the justice system too much! Let's work to keep the system exactly how it is, with mass incarceration and private prison enslavement.' Atler is exactly right, and Bill knew it, but immediately became defensive, and refused to engage.
I respect Bill, in that he sees his role as irreverent say anything dismantler of political correctness. Unfortunately I see a pattern of the same old jokes and cheap shots/non-engagements--'They don't defend people they defend feelings,' Bernie's a long-shot hippie on a 'Dream Bus' (please), etc. etc.
Finally the not at all nuanced discussion of the attacks on Ilhan Omar from all sides was disturbing to me. Sure there are ways to read her tweets as anti-semitic (you might be more inclined to do so because she's the first openly Muslim woman in congress, but that's not even my main point). You can also read them as critiques of money in politics, of the atrocities of the right-wing Netanyahu gov. and long ties to both parties but especially the far right in America. She supports BDS, so do many Jews, what's the problem? If it is anti-semitism, it does not hold a candle to the right wing. You don't even need to google Steve King's thoughts on the matter, read a youtube comment section on Fox or Breitbart or Daily Caller or Ben Shapiro or any of these clowns if you doubt this. There is no doubt a twisted allegiance between support for Israel, and American militaristic interests in the mid-east, which is the province of the right wing, and appealing to their deeply anti-semitic base--just ask yourself this, did David Duke endorse Omar's campaign?
This one had me fumin', I'll be honest. Bout time these old fuffs cede some air time to someone with a fresh take huh?

Thank you for this. I’ve never wanted to be on a panel so bad in my life lol
The brand of SJW they speak of is just another vein of a broader, reactionary issue imo. It’s ppl THINKING they have good intentions but reacting largely off of emotion and therefore going around shouting down or boycotting/cancelling perceived abusers, rapists, liars, cheats etc. and getting ppl fired or publicly humiliated before they’ve had a fair shake. Problem w/ that is everybody shit stinks, he who hasn’t sinned cast the first blah blah blah and that’s correct. That shit ain’t cool and it has def had a regressive effect on the left and needs to be reigned in.
The other side of that coin is, to be generous, a tad more violent in their reactionary approach...That’s what makes the “both sides” argument so maddening.
Yes, both sides harbor their fair share of extremist, misguided ideologies, but one side tends to harbor the types of extremists that will gun you down in a fucking church.. same ones that have been not so discreetly calling for a civil war for a decade..
It’s without a doubt important that we reign in this budding cancel culture of hunting ppl down online and getting them harassed or fired for mean things they say on the internet or differing ideas. It’s also important that we understand at some point we need to grow the fuck up and acknowledge that life isn’t a chat room and we’re not always anon, my guy. There are consequences to some of the “edgy” shit we like to say..
I just hope the bad faith arguments stop soon. This shit is absolutely bizarre

However people who advocate for social justice are not the same as "social justice warriors" who are mainly for policing speech and attempting to destroy people over old tweets, usually distracting from and trivializing actual social justice causes. There is an entire ideology built around it, often associated with postmodernism, etc. and that is what "social justice thought" refers to.

    • @OfTheGaps

@@davidk2187 Precisely!! Nobody outside the far right is against Social Justice, but too often SJW's give the same weight to trivial fashion preferences and easily hurt feelings as they do to genuine systematic injustice. They often go out of their way to take offense, and presume that any differences in outcomes result purely from malice.
Sometimes SJWs genuinely misunderstand the issues, sometimes they intentionally feign offense in order to beat others over the head with their supposed moral authority. In either case, they trivialize real issues and alienate many potential allies.

Totally agree with you on the point about 'PC culture' (although I hate how that phrase is used to instantly dismiss things, but that's a different topic...).
The major reason why the panel jumped down Jonathan Alter's throat is over their different interpretations of the words 'social justice'. Alter meant it in the old school way, the rest of the panel meant SJWs.
The phrase 'social justice' previously meant doing good things for disadvantaged people. Then it got hijacked by people who wanted to equate social media whingers with "PC culture". That's what created the term SJW (Social Justice Warrior). I hate people who whinge on Twitter as much as any other sane human being does, but that shit is totally different from what social justice is.
Real social justice is a lawyer who charges a reduced fee to a poor person so that they can have decent representation in court. Real social justice is a guy who steps in to stop a gay guy from being beaten just because he's gay. Real social justice doesn't tweet about "how evil Louis CK is" because the rest of the herd are doing it.
Add to that the fact that political correctness started out as a good thing. It is actually correct to call people "hearing impaired" instead of deaf, because not all people who have hearing issues are completed deaf. The problem is that people went too far with political correctness and now it makes a mockery of itself, just like any good idea that goes out of control.

It isn't a myth though, and it really is everywhere. Alter is just another one of the mainstream democrats that dismiss SJWs as fringe or inconsequential so they don't have to deal with it. That's also how they're able to blame conservatives and right-wing media for "exaggerating" the problem, because mainstream left media refuses to touch it. It's a frustrating tactic but kind of brilliant from a PR standpoint.

The SJWs referred to in this episode and in most comments are people that demand all people admit to being racist and commit themselves to taking action to mitigate their racist impulses - even when those impulses, objectively, don't exist. When an individual requests evidence that illustrates their racism, SJWs deflect and call the request for a evidence in and of itself a racist act.
It seems like people who come to the defense of these divisive tactics and SJWs are the ones that are erroneously conflating groups of people - liberals and leftists. They are two distinct groups and it's critically important for them to be discussed with clarity.

Something that most on the panel (including Bill) fail to understand: Social justice is something COMPLETELY different than political correctness. The former is about government creating the structural(!) conditions for people in their vast majority to ACTUALLY have a fair chance of leading a good life free of existential risks to their economic livelihoods (e.g. providing safety by supporting the police via stricter gun laws; mandatory health insurance for all); the latter is the mistaken belief that by merely APPEARING to do what is morally right everything else will somehow sort itself out. The key underlying reason for social justice and political correctness having little in common is the massive extent of hypocrisy evident in American life (especially so in politics, but also in other spheres of life), much more so than for instance in Europe. I suppose this is the legacy of puritanism.

John Rawls was completely mischaracterised by Noah Rothman. Rawls never advocated for unequal political institutions nor for unequal distribution of justice. Rawls, on the very first page of A Theory of Justice, clearly states:
“Justice is the first virtue of social institutions, as truth is of systems of thought. A theory however elegant and economical must be rejected or revised if it is untrue; likewise laws and institutions no matter how efficient and well-arranged must be reformed or abolished if they are unjust. Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override.”
I am amazed Noah Rothman had the gall to mischaracterise Rawls in this way when all he had to do to avoid doing so was read the very first page of Rawls’s book.

That's a pretty stupid comment by Noah, that the pardon system is meant to save people from conditions that are unjust - it's simply not big enough to actually serve any kind of balancing function. You can only realistically pardon a few people, while the justice system meanwhile tramples over the rights of 100s of 1000s of people.
