Gentlemen, this was a unbelievable unbiased review. I absolutely watched every minute of it and agree with your final results. I do feel that you missed out on one HUGE CATEGORY. Factory Accessories. Most users that buy these machines add alot. Polaris, is definitely #1 in that category. IMO! That is why I chose the 2023 General over the Yamaha. I added factory Tilt out windshield, Upper doors and rear glass and of course because it only comes with a 6 month warranty, I added a 4 year warranty. I truly believe that Factory accessories should be one of your categories going forward. The best hands down unbiased review on these three machines. All information was accurate IMO! 🍀👍🙏🙏💪💪👏👏
Much appreciated! This video took weeks to produce. We will have to take some time to wrap our heads around including factory accessories as a category for future shootouts. We definitely understand where you're coming from. Having the machines to evaluate makes doing a shootout with them easy however evaluating an entire accessory line that we do not have access to would be a little more complicated. Great suggestion though.
@@UTVonDemand I can't even imagine the work that goes into a production like this. Factory Accessories are a big part of these types of UTVs and is huge business. Again, unbelievable unbiased review. 👏
You're 100% right. 99% of buyers will not notice huge differences in suspension, engine performance, etc... but I want my bumpers/guards, gun rack, light bars, windshield options, carbo box setups, etc.
Having sold Polaris for 15 years while listening to my customers complain and dealing with the Polaris warranty department I have to say this. Polaris has a genius design market for making what most everyone wants in all department’s. Now the other side of them, with out any doubt they have the worst quality control of any company in the world. They put the parts up for the lowest bids all across the world. They have zero interest in durable long lasting machines, and it’s proven by the 6 or 12 months warranty. Ask anyone that owns a Polaris sxs or atv how often they replace A arm bushing,u joints, drive belts, wiring harness trouble, tps sensor, broken shocks. They are the worst built machine made. But they are nice what time they are not broken down. I’m just saying!!! Oh I almost forgot they do build a fairly durable engine but they take away from that with the weakest differential and axles in the industry. In case you are thinking that I’m selling some other brand,I’m not I no longer deal with any power sports whatsoever. Good luck and ask a lot of honest Polaris owners before buying.
I owned a repair shop for 16 years and worked for a dealer for 8 years before that.We worked on all brands. For the most part we changed oil and installed accessories on the Japanese brands and made money, lots of money, fixing Polaris. The dealer I worked for wouldn't take any Polaris machines in on trade.
My father owns two 02 Sportsman 500 that have been beat to shit. No major mechanical issues, just small stuff. Very dependable. Neighbor owns a 2010 rzr that runs beautifully. I think it's all relative to the amount of Polaris's out in the wild. Just so many of them.
This guy knows polaris haha he's correct bushings lol I mean after one fails within your first or second ride just upgrade them all with poly ones. U joints yeah just as bad. The engine like he said I do believe is better than the can am engines. Just the rest is a fail.
I really loved this shootout video. It's exactly what I needed to see. I am currently ready to pull the trigger on a purchase and have really narrowed it down to the rmax2 xtr or the commander xtp. I am torn between the two. I will be riding primarily in south arizona area but will take it on trips around the state and to nearby states on occasion. I don't drive fast or do much technical riding but don't rule it out for spot fun times. The rmax xtr comes with adventure pro map which I REALLY need and radio but at a cost of about 1300 more. I really like the xtp for it's transmission features and turf mode. Narrowed down to these two what is your overall opinions on the best purchase here? Thanks.
With the RMAX being king of technical terrain and you're mentioning that you don't typically drive-in highly technical terrain the Can-Am sounds like a good option, especially when you say you want turf mode. I am pretty sure Kenny makes an accessory GPS mount however it is not as beautifully ntegrated as the Yamaha Adventure Pro. The Yamaha is a little bit more of a ripper but it sounds like you enjoy cruising trails which the Can-Am does really well. Just make sure you fit in it comfortably. If you do, you will probably really like the interior. One more thing, We have heard from the guys at @DirtTraxTV Is that the new 2022 RMAX Sport has some next level suspension performance that might make a difference where you live. Like the Can-Am XT-P It does not come outfitted with AGPS or stereo. You can upgrade the sport it with adventure pro as a kit for $1099 It does not come outfitted with AGPS or stereo. You can upgrade the sport it with adventure pro as a kit for $1099. That would be our dream machine from Yamaha. We will be doing a review on the RMAX Sport along with a suspension setup video over the next couple months. We hope this major decision a little easier, probably not. If you have any further questions on specifics please feel free to hit us back.
@@UTVonDemand Thanks guys, I have a maverick trail now and plan to keep it to take back to Wisconsin in the spring. I like it but want something wider for riding now. (snowbird) Still torn and bouncing back and forth. Thanks.
@@billvarga8336 I've tried both, extensively. Take both of them out for a rip, you'll go for the commander. It just feels so much more planted. If you want to squeeze out a little more performance, just have your dealer swap out the CVT ramps for those from the maverick 1000R. You'll get an additional few hundred RPM's and HP to the ground, at the cost of slightly higher engine noise. In Arizona, it won't be an issue, but current RMax's do not start in colder temperatures. This is a dealbreaker for me, living in Canada.
@@michaelfortier7726 yep! I’m in northern Ontario And my RMAX SE takes many cranks to start. Annoying ☹️👎. Annnnd it’s friggin loud! Really unhappy about that.
I own the RMAX XTR…here in Canada it’s called an SE 🤷♂️. If the Can Am is that much quieter, get it! I have to wear ear plugs in this RMAX! 🤦♂️. Seriously, it’s that noisy! Very disappointed with Yamaha letting this happen. And was previously stated, if you are using your sxs in cold weather, the RMAX takes many turnovers to keep running ☹️👎
We had a blast testing the Can-Am Commander, Polaris General and Yamaha RMAX individually then putting them head to head for three days to produce this shootout. We look forward to your questions and comments.
Very nice shootout! Historically, Yamaha has far better reliability than the other two but that Can Am looks good too. We're looking into 4seaters and the Rmax keeps it's short wheelbase. Still difficult to swing mid 20k for an off-road toy!
We totally get it on price. You might find the Is entry level 4 door sport machines a little bit more affordable. Is a friend who owns planet side-by-side Just purchased a Maverick sport 4 seater and loves it. We're happy to hear you enjoyed the shootout.
We just purchased an RMAX4 today for the family. Taking it out tomorrow! From an ex diesel mechanic, i immediately noticed the quality of the chassis, suspension and the car like interior. Also, it’s a Yamaha 👌
I don't think you'd of made a terrible choice going home with any of the 3 on the trailer. Who'd of dreamed the selection of machines would of been this diverse 10 years ago. It's almost hard to decide which type of machine to go with, let alone which model!
You nailed it. Regardless of the scoring system that we put in place to make this into a competition, We would all be happy with any of these machines. All very good, all slightly different. Hope to see you tonight for the premiere.
To the UTV on demand team: I have to say that I really appreciate the time, effort, thought, and thoroughness you put into your productions. As censorious as youtube is, your content is part of what makes coming to this place worthwhile.
Yeah, we're not the kind of content that typically gets censored. We are not fans of censorship and have had to watch certain content we enjoy elsewhere.
Reliability is subjective and unfortunately we Don't get to rack up a 1000 miles on these machines. For the week's worth of beating that we put on them we can happily report that nothing broke. Love testing, hate wrenching.
Except the Rmax has had some reliability problems out of the gate with the engine and transmission. Check on it here on RUclips. I am certain they'll iron out all the problems soon. However, it confirms the wisdom of not buying any new design the first year it's out.
Absolutely Yamaha takes the cake for that in every vehicle they make, brp products are bulletproof as well. I’ve seen too many Polaris have problems in my life too say anything good about them.
@@Lalaafastroli Spot on! No doubt in my mind that Polaris finishes 3rd in quality and reliability, and while being the most expensive. Not a good combo IMO.
Great job removing Bias from the review. Hard to find unbias opinions. I did a lot of research before I ordered my Rmax but without being able to drive them all it is hard to choose. There are no other videos comparing the three models like this. Glad to see the Rmax scored highest where I needed it too and confirmed my decision. Now it just needs to arrive.
Never any bias here brother. We can have fun and almost any machine in the dirt. Some machines just make it more fun than others. You couldn't have gone wrong with any of these but we are sure you will like your Yamaha.Hope it comes in soon. Hit us back and tell us how you like it.
Goes to show that competition is king and keeps pushing the manufactures to keep improving, so we the consumers win! Great review of these machines. Thank You
In order to discuss reliability we have to 1st break things. In the few 100 miles we put on these cars on these cars nothing broke. We are sure if you dig into forums you can find out more about what people are breaking. However, we cannot include consumer opinion that we did not monitor in a shootout. Also, we understand that parks availability is a problem right now for all of us. Unfortunately, there is no way we can gauge the availability of all of the parts available for these machines. We get our best. You have to take it from here.
Great review and as a former RUclips content creator I know this rook a ton of work and time to do this! Thank You! Now how about the 4 seater shoot out with these models as part 2?
Congratulations on Kyle Anderson winning the Pro Stock NA class for 2023 King of Hammers and finishing 34th overall. That's right, the Yamaha 'golf cart' beat out many highly- modified sport SxS, including 2 KRXs and a Honda Talon in his class. No Generals or Commanders anywhere in sight of KOH.
I got the 2020 commander do to the fact that it wasn’t in the 21 line up and it was my favorite machine. Now am wondering should I trade it in for the new one or RMAX
Either the 2021 Commander or RMAX would be a big step up. Which one will make you happiest will depend on the type of terrain you typically drive on and what you want to do with it. Get back with us if you need a consultation.
I owned a atv/sxs/snowmobile repair shop for a few years (closed 2019 due to covid/economy)....my experience after fixing 1000 plus machines is.....CAN AM...to much tech...difficult to work on...weak clutches....very expensive for parts...fun as hell to drive though......YAMAHA....very easy to work on...parts reasonable...very reliable although not the most powerful... POLARIS....you could not pay me to own one....they build fast powerful machines no doubt....but absolutely horrible to work on...terrible reliability/build quality..(POLARIS was better than 60% of overall repair business coming through the door) parts are crazy expensive and horrible engineering....not saying any of them are perfect...but my opinion is if it's my 20 grand I want to use it...not fix it...YAMAHA wins that vote hands down...had a YAMAHA wolverine 450 sport 4x4...7000 plus km of very hard aggressive riding in mountains....never opened motor up...original belt and clutches...that's durable ....good luck on your can am or POLARIS going that far on clutches or belts...just my 2 cents worth...only been riding/fixing atvs/sxs/snowmobile for 40 years....by the way am not brand loyal at all...just want the best for my hard earned dollar.
Despite the Yamaha Winning, y’all still forgot to mention the 10 YEAR belt warranty!!!! Common man!!! Dude! How do you leave that out?!??? Quality wise, Yamaha takes the cake at a 10.
Yamaha all the way. Have one of the first 2004 Rhinos only oil and diff changes not even a new belt. Polaris you must have belts along and know how to change them, Can Am its all parts. Where is your nearest Dealer, how and where do you drive. Ive pulled back many newer SXSs back to the cabin. Its all in set up when you get it, use it or loose it , many options, and of coures driver and trail lines.
I’ve been waiting for a while. Just received my new 2022 Rmax 2 wolverine 1000 SE. I would be proud to drive anyone of the three of these Rigs, there is no wrong choice just an individual preference. Watched most of your videos in the last little while they are very informative and of exceptionally quality. Keep them coming.
You nailed it. All of these SXSs are great. We'd be proud to own any one of them. Each excels at different things though. It will all be clearer soon. Thanks for waiting.
2 years later, your Yamaha is as tight as the day is was made. The guy that bought the General 2 years ago has a sloppy, noisy machine with a bunch of error codes.
Can't really go wrong with any of these rigs and I look forward to watching this video, but I'll tell ya my future prediction.... Yamaha will be the winner. It does everything VERY well and is built like a tank!
@@UTVonDemand Well, looks like I was right, guess I'll take bragging rights, lol! I love my XT-R. I can't even begin to tell y'all how much fun this thing is in the woods, but then again, you know that now!
@@BarnStangz Yep, you called it! Right you are, we do know how much fun the RMAX is. If hopefully no one gets too upset that their machine finished 2nd or 3rd. We both know that it's about picking the machine that suits your needs and terrain the best.Enjoy that Yamaha.
@@UTVonDemand And like you mentioned before, they are all great machines, can't go wrong with any of them! Thank you for putting out this great content!
Wow that was an awesome review. This has been a long awaited shootout. It was surprising how well the RMAX did. Just goes to show they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Any of these machine well get you anywhere and back. I think really it comes down to looks and comfort for the individual. Good job guys keep the great content coming!!!!!!!!!
It was very happy you enjoyed it. Sorry it took so long to produce. Projects like this take a lot of time to produce. The more we do them the faster we'll become. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I think a key difference between the three is the rated towing capacity. At 2K, both the Commander and RMAX have the capability to tow the other off the trail in the event of breakdown. At a 1500lbs rated capacity, the General XP 1000 does not even have the capability to tow its own weight. Big deal breaker for me!
one thing: noted at 3:10...... the Can-Am and Polaris both use belt slippage as their "clutch" ...... as my friends have experienced in their machines.... this can leave you stranded in a deep water crossing once the belt starts to wear as the belt will then be really slippy in the water... both their machines got stuck in the deep water while my Kawasaki just motored on through it (Kawi also runs a transmission internal clutch and constant belt engagement similar to the R-Max), this is also why the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines are the only belt driven machines to have "engine braking" as they employ a one-way cluch in the transmission to keep the belt engaged at all speeds..... hence why you also don't hear of belt problems in these machines and why they offer such long warranties on the belt drive systems...... they know they aren't going to break or have problems very often, where in a Polaris you better bring a spare belt and all the tools to change it on the trail. speaking of the engine braking, at 7:00 when you see the Polaris descending a slippery hill, you can hear the driver riding the brake and somewhat struggling to keep control- in the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines you don't have to worry about this as you can just let off the gas and the engine braking is much easier to descend slippery hills in. Finally for those that want to call me out, I own two machines currently a Yamaha Wolverine and a Kawasaki KRX, and have owned a Polaris Ace in the past......there's a reason i sold that POS Polaris.
My Polaris mechanic told me that Polaris wants to get one dollar in repairs for every mile driven. He works at a dealership. That dealership also sells Can-Am and he said Can-Am was a much better choice.
We sold our General and bought a Commander 1000 XMR after the TWENTY SEVENTH TIME having to have it serviced in just 2 years, and it's in an entirely different class for those wanting a do it all machine. We've towed our 2680 lb overland teardrop almost 280 miles with it multiple times. It's been over 4 feet deep in the mud to the point where you have to get out of the seat so you can keep breathing and still gets itself out. The thing just doesn't care where you are or what you're doing, it just does it. Now the only time Polaris comes to my mind is when one of the people I ride with is stuck or breaks down. I won't ever buy a Polaris again.
Best review and comparison I’ve seen. 💥💥 Also, thank you for using the same tires … so many other reviews (recreational and 4WD vehicles) don’t, and I think it greatly hinders “objective” results.
I know this is 2 years old. I am in the market as of now for a new machine. (99% leaning Yamaha RMax) But i think they should be tested as how they come from the showroom.
Thank you for taking the time to gather such detailed and unbiased info I dont typically sub to channels of this sort and just watch when they pop up in my reccomended list but the quality displayed here has earned you one. Also pllleeeassseee do a 4 seater comparison maybe split between short stadium seating types like rmax4, pioneer 4 or 5, etc. and the limo styles, like general 4, commander max, etc.
Thank you very much. Really appreciate all that positivity! Thank you for the sub as well. If we may have to look into a 4 seat shootout at some point. We have gotten quite a few requests since launching this one.
Good test and I like the fact you put the same tires on all the machines they are all good choices but I love my 21 commander it’s the most comfortable machine of the 3 I tried them all but your right sight lines are reduced due to the lower seat hight!
I have no doubt they are fun. But good god. People seems to have too much disposable income. They basically cost as much as a car. You could by an old jeep and spend half as much upgrading it.
You could buy an old Jeep and spend half as much fixing it up and you would have a vehicle that any one of these machines would run away from on most trails. Then there is ride quality.
Please please please follow up with what the cost of maintenance and availability of parts is. I was told my a Polaris/Can-Am tuner to buy the Yamaha based on that alone. No one cares what you have if you can’t get to the trails…
It would be extremely difficult to start verifying a lot of part availability on 3 different machines. That could be tougher than filming this shootout. We get the concern though, for sure.
exactly i own the rmax2 xtr and you dont need to lose rear traction to have the front wheels to engage like a po-po resulting in a much more controlled gripping climbing drive
@@mariost-jacques7490 We are pretty hip to how the Polaris system works but they're racing their ratio between the back end and front end is so close none of our drivers even noticed the back end beginning to slip before the front end kicked in. But what you're saying is true.
Bro in law bought the general reviewed here...real world here. Bed hinges welded crooked, tailgate wouldn't close from new, primary clutch fell of engine at a little over 1k miles...fit and finish total garbage.... same crew has 2 rmax 2, fit and finish excellent, no bed/tailgate issues, superior clutching, engine braking, and diff lock. Same crew, can am, better seating position then all reviewed for big drivers used to sport machines. Nice it offers turf mode but modes and diff lock too complicated and gives up grip when it matters most in trail situations where the rmax will cruise up getting you to the top of climb safely....RMAX is the winner, can am respectively in a close 2nd, poo poo in its deserving 3rd. Same junk they been pawning off on poo poo fans forever
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It's cool to hear from somebody elst who's had all 3 machines to experience. Our tallest driver felt differently about the canam than your guys the York eyes and we did not have the same issues with the general's bed butt inconsistencies happen. Thanks for sharing.
As an RMax owner, I’d agree with everything said in this review. Sometimes, the rear suspension does want to get air when you might not want it to, and you have to be able to correct for that on the landing. But it is fast, and it’s so good on the tough trails and rock climbing that I like to push to see what I can do before switching into four wheel drive or other drive modes. I typically keep it in sport mode, even on tight, technical mountain trails in Montana. It’s a great machine.
Where are the other manufacturers? Shouldn't they all be building something to compete in this class (100 +/- HP)? So disappointing...... Especially disappointed in Honda and Kawasaki.
@@UTVonDemand Ok -that's fair, but where would you put the Honda (Pioneer 1000)? Utility (no sport)? So maybe in the same class as the Viking? Maybe I just like the "sport-utility" segment enough to want Honda to have something there. I can't help but feel the Honda Pioneer COULD compete with some slight improvements. Thanks.
All these are nice machines.. however the price on ALL machine is ridiculous... Even the base model of these are exceeding normal peoples budget. Can am being the worse not offering diff lock in their base models. They are the only company at this point that charges extra for it..
Unfortunately, you just cant buy machines with this many features and capability for $10,000. That would be an impossible price point to reach. We feel the new Polaris Pro XP is too expensive at $31,000 mainly because we cant afford to spend that much money on a toy and they cant afford to build it for $15,000. Fortunately, technology trickles down and we wouldn't be surprised to see differential lock on more and more Can-Ams in the future.
@@UTVonDemand look at the x3, diff lock on base model now. I am hoping they add it to lower end mav sports and commanders before I purchase my next unit as that is a feature I really want above all else.
@@UTVonDemand I agree 💯 on building them for 10k... However in some instances if not more...they cost more than a truck/keep and at this point in the game they aren't that much smaller. I jumped on the sxs train for a short period and realized they really aren't that practical as well and I have my own land but still not practical. They have made almost all riding areas unless 50" an absolute nightmare to ride a quad. While I still like them I went back to a quad... Smaller, more cost effective, better fun and easier to transport... Maybe if I lived on the west coast I'd be more app to own one...people will disagree but on the east coast I think quads are better. In my opinion quads are twice the fun at a 1/3 of the cost... You say you can't afford a 31k toy...well most can't afford a 25k toy or even a 20k toy....these prices are crazy....it's like paying a 125k for a new Ford truck. Makes no sense.
@@Supertramp01 As a representative of our sister channel ATV on Demand, and the owner of a raptor 700 and 4 other sport ATV's. I totally get what you're saying.
Hey ! Just wanted to say how good of a job you guys did comparing these SXS's, I loved that you put the same tires on all machines, that really evens the playing field. My friend had the original Canines on his KRX and they are a very good tire. Like you guys said, you can't go wrong with any machine, they are all very nice, the Rmax is my choice for my riding style and the terrain here in Eastern Canada. Plus the Yamaha reliability and belt drive system is second to none. I was super impressed with the Popo having Walker Evans shocks and sailed over those jumps but couldn't believe how much those seats shook while riding, and the Can Am is nice but the body lines on it are weird, it looked like they took a box off a different machine and just stuck it on the commander.... where the Polaris and Yamaha have a clean shape and body lines. Anyways You guys did an amazing job with this video, very honest and great test for all of these machines. New Subscriber !
We are very happy to have you. Thanks for watching and for commenting. We felt running the same tire on all 3 machines was the only way to fairly compare them. We have heard a similar comment from others regarding the commander's dump bed. You are correct, integration doesn't look as seamless although it works well. Stay warm up there in Eastern Canada. Let's chat again soon.
Overall, you couldn't go wrong with any of these machines. But for me personally, i'd definitely choose the Yammie because for me reliability is very important. All our past Yammies have been rock solid. Our other brands, not so great tbh.
We're not planning on doing another shootout until one of these machines is significantly updated or another player enters the game that's nearly on par. Until then, this shootout is 100% relevant mines the latest colors. Too many other shootouts we haven't done yet.
We have not driven it but it certainly looks to be the right machine for those who want something a little more compact. And like you said, 108 horsepower.
This is a very thorough, and comprehensive review - excellent job! You've provided a lot of useful information but if I were looking to buy one of these right now it would be difficult to choose. Personally, I feel the General is the nicest looking overall, I love the front end of the Yamaha but I find the front of the Commander is awkward, but perhaps it would look better in person. I like the look of the previous one better. I like options when it comes to the drivetrain, so I like The Commander best in that department, but I also like a roomy cab and it seems to be smaller than the General or Rmax. I currently have a 2015 Commander with over 14,000 km (8,700 miles) so it's been a durable machine. I guess for me it would come down to the Can Am or Yamaha. Keep up the great work UTVonDemand. I've watched lots of your videos and look forward to more.
Thank you for such a positive comment. If you liked your old commander and it has been reliable we believe you would love a new one. The new machine's overall performance is dramatically improved. The new cockpit seems like it's quite a bit more spacious than the old 1. Had a little time to ride in 1 during our commander test video shoot. That machine had a hard life but it was still going..
@@UTVonDemand You're welcome, and thanks for the reply. I will definitely try to find one to sit in before making up my mind when the time comes to trade in for a new machine.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but maybe Eric should stick to on-roading if he had a difficult time figuring which 4x4 setting to use in the Can Am LOL. Very good video.
LOL, The differences between trail and trail active weren't incredibly apparent until we we drove the command commander with the stock tires in slick conditions. With the time frame in which the different machines arrived and departed we had to film the canning um the canams standalone test after we filmed the shootout. That was Eric's 1st test with us and honestly he was quite fast and precise. Really appreciate you watching. Hope to see you again soon.
Any idea when you will get the 4 seat versions in for a shootout? You always have excellent reviews and shootouts. Replacing my wolverine X4 for one of these in 4 seat configuration.
As much as we hate to disappoint, it is something we will not be able to pull off in the short term. Coordinating all 3 machines with the different manufacturers could be difficult right now but we will look into it.
Very good review. I would add one more category, cost to mod. From what I saw, can am would take first with a clutch kit. It is fairly inexpensive and easy to install. Reliability matters also. I work on all of these, and would take the can am or the yamaha. Polaris makes me a lot of money repairing.
No doubt, This is what my brother in laws mechanic says. Mostly polaris comes into him and they are near the bottom mechanically hates working on them.
If the Polaris is that bad why do they dominate the market? People typically take shots at the top dog just as you are doing. Running a Yamaha in a group reminds me of riding a Yamaha at Sturgis.
It would be difficult for us to get our hands on all 3 machines in the short term. We can tell you this, The engine outcome would still be the same. You MAY have a little less room in the back of the RNAX But it will make up for it with much better maneuverability than the others.
Offer full doors with quality side glass windows and we shall come. Riding is unpleasant when the temp is in the 20's and you don't have something that resembles a snowmobile suit. Make the doors color and decals match the rest of the ride, rather than the after market ones that are flat black in color. I will overlook a little more door rattle for the extra warmth.
Right in the begining you say the general had park and a park brake? Where ? I thought a hand operated park brake on generals only came in overseas EU models because of their road rules
We, I, The head editor may have made a mistake. We didn't really rate the parking brakes. The machines had been turned in before we started editing the shootout. Filming and writer ratings were done and I did not have the cars to put my hands on.I remember thinking about that when I scripted it.I was really hung up on getting the numbers and writer opinions correct. If I made a mistake I apologize.
You know, that's a good suggestion. Yeah well, since we didn't put it in the video and we got a lot of experience cleaning them, the Polaris is the easiest to clean. It had smooth plastic under the fenders that helped prevent mud build-up in nooks and crannies. Overall it just seemed like there was less hard to reach places to clean out. We only do deep cleanings and it seemed like the Polaris took about a 1/2 hour less. We would follow it with a Yamaha than the Can-Am. It takes a little more time to figure out where the mud hides on the other 2. Perhaps this is something we will include on future shootouts.
I’ve never had any reservations buying a Yamaha, dirt, street, whatever. They may not be at the top of any one category but they always score good acres the board. Great vid it wouldn’t upset me to own any of them. After riding bikes for years I drove my cousins side by side and that sold me, radio, cooler, fishing poles, lawn chairs, yeh I’m in lol, especially the older I get.
Holy Shit batman. 20k +;for a 2 seat SXS jeez I remember when a 2 seat SXS only cost 10 to 15K. Things are getting stupid expensive. Never thought I'd see the day when a SXS cost as much as a fucking compact sedan.😵😵😱😱. Well if I'm going to pay that much for a SXS then I better get the best value for my $$$. So it would probably come down to the Yamaha or the Polaris. The Cam-am is a good machine however I don't know enough about the company or their products. So if I'm going to be dropping some serious$$on the SXS I'd probably go with the Polaris General. Although it's the most expensive SXS of the bunch it's a tried and tested platform so you know what your getting. The Yamaha is another great machine to consider and would be my 2nd choice if I couldn't get a Polaris. The only reason I wouldn't make the Yamaha my 1st choice is the transmission feels a bit jerky when shifting from reverse to drive. ( The Polaris feels more refined there). Now I'm pretty sure Cam-am is a very good product given it's been in the United States for a while. However without knowing more about their products I don't wish to take a risk. So that's my opinion.
This was a cool review and after watching it i believe i made the right choice for me.. I have the 21 commander and love it.. All of these machines are great in there own way.. When it comes down to picking one i think it all depends on what you will use it most for and which one you think looks the best..
The commander is definitely the number one machine for a number of people. An aftermarket clutch kit should be all that required to turn it into a bit more of a screamer, if that's what someone wants from their Can-Am Commander.
@@UTVonDemand I dont need mine to scream.. One thing i like the most about it is the low end torque.. Since i rock crawl with it most of the time i love the low end it has already.. Not many places to really get down on it where i do most of my riding and the when i do find one 40 50 mph is plenty fast for me and the commander has no problem doing that.. I will say that among the mods that probably most people do (windshield, stereo, ext) the one performance mod i would recommend is a dual rate suspension.. Ive done it to mine and WOW what a huge difference over the stock suspension.. Other than that ive been very impressed with it overall..
@@dlcogburn6992 We love hearing owner feedback. What did you do to your suspension? Did you replace your shocks or just your Springs? What brand did you go with?
@@UTVonDemand I did some research and a lot of people seem to like shock therapy so i went with there dual rate spring kit.. I called and talk to them about how i ride and what i do with the machine most of the time. They were very helpful and very precise.. Once i gave them the info needed they sent me a spring kit that i installed myself.. Was not very hard to do and took me less than 3 hours.. Probably could have done it faster if i had one of those fancy spring compressors.. The difference was noticeable immediately and the kit gave me about another inch of ground clearance.. Im not a shock expert by no means but even i could tell the difference in ride quality of the stock springs and being a true dual rate spring kit gives it a ton of adjustability.. They also offer a valuing kit so you can rebuild the entire shock and that is supposed to make the ride even better.. If i was a more extreme rider i might consider something like that but for me the spring kit was perfect..
If you want to have a new friend with a close personal relationship buy Can Am or Polaris. You will be visiting your dealer a lot and contributing a great number of dollars to his children’s college fund. I have owned them all and regretted every minute of my Can-Am and Polaris purchases. If you want to go ride and have fun buy Japanese if you want to pay for parts and walk home, Can-Am and Polaris are open until 8:00.
best utilty says it all. if i needed pure sport i'd get a pure sport, but i need a utility machine, plus i run tracks in the winter.i'm looking to get the commander xmr for this reason .now i just need to find one.i totalled my pioneer hitting a rock at high speed and destroyed the frame and my insurance wont' repair it and want to write it off.having owned it since 2019 i found out i want a utility with some sport capability.you can only upgrade a pioneer so much before you're just wasting $$$.
We agree. A pioneer is a good unit, but it is far more of a work vehicle than a sport vehicle. The commander definitely offers sportier performance. We hope you find one soon.
If I had to make any complaints with my 2021 XTR it would be cab noise, MPG (14.5 so far), tire sling, weight (1800+ lb.s) and dust (I have front and rear windows). All that said I love this machine. It flat azz flies.
Easily resolved with 22 gram HV weights. Lower noise AND better gas mileage. See my videos about plugging up those nooks and crannies to reduce dust as well as installing UORP's wheel well block-offs.
Yep, my biggest complaint too! Stupidly noisy! Need to wear ear plugs. And paying that much money, shouldn’t have to “plug holes” to keep dust out. The other issue that the shootout showed us how dirty you get driving it. Had to install big fender flares to fix the issue.
Next time can you compare the three with ease of Maintenance like air filter and oil change that should be on your list. When I buy an expensive machine I want it be the easiest not a pain in the ass when it comes to changing the oil and Air filter.
Thanks for doing this comparison! I currently have a RZR XP1000, but I’ve been eyeballing this segment for my next machine. Mostly for the cargo space and interior. I do like to drive fast and hard, so I hope I won’t lose too much of that over the RZR. Really looking hard at the RMAX4. Is the rear suspension noticeably worse with 3” less travel? Thanks!
If you want the sport utility machine with suspension that will perform most like your RZR's at high speed then you would probably want to look at the general. It is the best of the 3 sport utility machines when it comes to whooped out choppy terrain. If you said you really liked writing in Moab, rock crawling, or mudding,We would probably have recommended the RMAX. The RZR XP 1000 rides flat and level in whoops. The Yamaha's back end is just too unsettled in comparison. It is worth noting that Yamaha just released a new RMAX sport that has a higher end suspension package. We will be reviewing that early February.
I own a 2021 rmax limited. The guy I trail ride with has 2021 RZR XP1000. They are very comparable for trail riding. If you want cargo space and a much nicer interior I think you’d be happy with an rmax. In a drag race he doesn’t pull away from me till 65. Rmax is governed at 70.
@@gregmcmurray9593 Kindness and well-thought-out suggestions are always greatly appreciated.
You're 100% right. 99% of buyers will not notice huge differences in suspension, engine performance, etc... but I want my bumpers/guards, gun rack, light bars, windshield options, carbo box setups, etc.
@@UTVonDemandPlease do more tests like this. Probably the best tests I ever see.
How about a test of the newest performance machines
Can't argue with the salesman who watched units come back.
Polaris are junk, 2 hundred miles and in the shop already

Very disappointed with Yamaha letting this happen. And was previously stated, if you are using your sxs in cold weather, the RMAX takes many turnovers to keep running ☹️👎
Yamaha will most likely outlast all of these other units. My 1997 350 wolverine atv I've put through hell still fires right up on a cold day.
Loved those 350 Wolverines.
the Yamaha engine and drive line will probably out last the Polaris I've seen Polaris vehicles have worn out wheel bearings etc at just 4000 km
Not the first year Rmax which has problems with the engine and transmission. Hopefully Yamaha has fixed those problems in the 2022 model.
We had a blast testing the Can-Am Commander, Polaris General and Yamaha RMAX individually then putting them head to head for three days to produce this shootout. We look forward to your questions and comments.
This is An Amazing video. I am wondering why you didn’t mention the 10 year belt warranty on the Yamaha. Maybe it would have made it seem too good.
Very nice shootout! Historically, Yamaha has far better reliability than the other two but that Can Am looks good too. We're looking into 4seaters and the Rmax keeps it's short wheelbase. Still difficult to swing mid 20k for an off-road toy!

@@Nicsiq Heck yeah, thanks! Will do. Happy New Year.
Let's not leave out RELIABILITY! Yamaha ftw!
@@UTVonDemand well said. Unfortunately everything is gonna break if they get beat on
Great job removing Bias from the review.
Thank You
They are all so good. Fortunately for us, they're all a little different. We're very happy you enjoyed the shootout.
Yea we win but they keep going up in price...
Now report back when they each have 5k miles, and I'd bet the yamaha is leaps and bounds ahead.
Yamaha is the clear winner
Please please please follow up with the 4 seater versions from each in the same test environment ;)
Definitely one to ponder.
Reliability.
Yamaha 10
Can-Am 6
Polaris 3
I guess that's another category for Yamaha?
No one is talking about dependability and the ability to purchase parts with all that is going on.
Impressive!

I’m very impressed on how unbiased this review was. Thanks for the hard work and evaluation of these three units.
Yo G, really glad you enjoyed it. It's hard to be bias when you like all 3.
Rmax is a beast and most reliable.
Yamaha certainly builds a good machine.
I’ve been waiting for a while. Just received my new 2022 Rmax 2 wolverine 1000 SE. I would be proud to drive anyone of the three of these Rigs, there is no wrong choice just an individual preference.
It depends on what your intended use is.
Hoping to see a 4 seater shoot out with these models.
Wasn't planning on it in the short term but more people keep asking so you never know.
The 4 seater test would be cool! Thanks for the information 👍
You're welcome. We're getting more and more requests for a 4 seat shootout.
Thanks for the shoot out i think i bought the good one i just bought the 2024 R Max LE and i just love it
Congratulations it's a great machine.
one thing: noted at 3:10...... the Can-Am and Polaris both use belt slippage as their "clutch" ...... as my friends have experienced in their machines.... this can leave you stranded in a deep water crossing once the belt starts to wear as the belt will then be really slippy in the water... both their machines got stuck in the deep water while my Kawasaki just motored on through it (Kawi also runs a transmission internal clutch and constant belt engagement similar to the R-Max), this is also why the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines are the only belt driven machines to have "engine braking" as they employ a one-way cluch in the transmission to keep the belt engaged at all speeds..... hence why you also don't hear of belt problems in these machines and why they offer such long warranties on the belt drive systems...... they know they aren't going to break or have problems very often, where in a Polaris you better bring a spare belt and all the tools to change it on the trail. speaking of the engine braking, at 7:00 when you see the Polaris descending a slippery hill, you can hear the driver riding the brake and somewhat struggling to keep control- in the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines you don't have to worry about this as you can just let off the gas and the engine braking is much easier to descend slippery hills in.
My dad is 6'6 which has most leg room?
Polaris is a great brand for bros desperate to look cool
Thanks for sharing your story.

Oh I understand and thanks.
Your test drivers need to learn how to drive the RMAX. You don't need to "Throw it" when doing crawls. It's a Billy Goat. Not a Po-Po.
We will let them know. They did rate it highest for crawling if that accounts for anything. We really appreciate you watching and commenting.
exactly i own the rmax2 xtr and you dont need to lose rear traction to have the front wheels to engage like a po-po resulting in a much more controlled gripping climbing drive
@@Mubvekhar As an owner we really appreciate your feedback! Can't wait to try the updated 2025!
Where are the other manufacturers? Shouldn't they all be building something to compete in this class (100 +/- HP)? So disappointing...... Especially disappointed in Honda and Kawasaki.
Sometimes you can have too many manufacturers in one class. Look at what happened to sport ATV's.
@@UTVonDemand Ok -that's fair, but where would you put the Honda (Pioneer 1000)? Utility (no sport)? So maybe in the same class as the Viking?
@@UTVonDemand haha Fresh snow on the ground today, winter is on it's way haha Keep up the great videos !
@@Maritimer We'll do. Enjoy the snow.
@@Maritimer YepI totally agree with you!!👍
Hey maritimer, I watched it too and am torn between the commander and the rmax. Thanks for your opinion. I may just get the rmax.
Thank you, this has been a very well put together and informative video!
Thank you! Very glad you enjoyed it.
We LOVE our Rmax2 XTR. It rocks! Great review.
Glad to hear you're enjoying your Yamaha. Thanks for letting us know. More reviews to come hope you're subscribed.
Overall, you couldn't go wrong with any of these machines. But for me personally, i'd definitely choose the Yammie because for me reliability is very important. All our past Yammies have been rock solid. Our other brands, not so great tbh.
Exactly, they don’t even mention the fact that the Yamaha has a 10 year belt warranty.
lol i dont see honda in the mix but since it aint id have to go for the yamaha over the rest
what honda? they don't make anything even close to these 3 machines.
We weren't going to say it.
Honda talon?
@@EasyZZ We have reviewed the Talon 1000 R, Talon 1000 X, and the Talon 1000 X4. If those are all sport machines. This is a sport utility shootout.
Will you guys be doing a shoot out for 2024 sport utility sxs models?
We're not planning on doing another shootout until one of these machines is significantly updated or another player enters the game that's nearly on par. Until then, this shootout is 100% relevant mines the latest colors. Too many other shootouts we haven't done yet.
I'm all in on the rmax4. Yamaha has a great 4 seater. Same as the rmax 2, but with back seats. 108hp 👍
We have not driven it but it certainly looks to be the right machine for those who want something a little more compact. And like you said, 108 horsepower.
All these machines sure do look a lot nicer and more capable than the Rhino 700 I bought in 2008!
Times have changed lol
I had a lot of fun in the old Rhino
@@AaronJones-yt4vd well then, you're in for a real treat if you haven't tried one of these.
I'll bet none will last as long though.
Gosh darn it, the Yamaha tears up the grass, LOL #1
🤣👍
Grass seed companies are like turf mode, who needs that! LOL.
Love the video and the very in-depth inspection on everything on the SxS, awesome work!!
Wasn't easy but it was worth it. Glad it has been so well received by you and everyone else.
The Yamaha will outlast the canna and Polaris combined.
No no
Yup
Great video guys! Haspin is a good test area! I’d have a heck of a time choosing one of those machines. All are good!
If working with all of the test writers and machines, after putting the shootout together it would still be hard to choose.
All are cool rigs. Pretty closely matched. The competition is getting us all better rigs. Can’t wait to see these 3 battle it out.
We wouldn't hesitate to buy any one of them. All are very good machines from the factory.
Any idea when you will get the 4 seat versions in for a shootout? You always have excellent reviews and shootouts. Replacing my wolverine X4 for one of these in 4 seat configuration.
As much as we hate to disappoint, it is something we will not be able to pull off in the short term. Coordinating all 3 machines with the different manufacturers could be difficult right now but we will look into it.
yall should do one of the same three machines but the 4 seater versions!!!
That is a popular request.
Only one has a 10 year belt warranty…Yamaha.
If the Polaris is that bad why do they dominate the market? People typically take shots at the top dog just as you are doing. Running a Yamaha in a group reminds me of riding a Yamaha at Sturgis.
How do they handle in cood and snow? Any seat heaters or hot air blowers? Would you use them for snow plowing?
Great wideo👍 Maverick sport vs RZR trail s1000 would be super epic mega great 😃
We would love to do that shoot out. We will look into availability.
Polaris is junk
We didn't break it. We'll try harder next time.
You guys have done an excellent job of a fair review on the three maybe the 4seater will be next keep up the good work
Thanks a lot. We put a lot of time into this. Our ability to do shootouts at this time is a bit limited by manufacturer availability.
I would love to see a reliability comparison as well.
I wanna see the four seater comparison really looking at the rmax 4 seater
You forgot to describe which one was easiest/hardest to clean up afterwards.
Perhaps this is something we will include on future shootouts.
i love 2021 r max just dont kill trees it gets expensive
Yeah, those trees don't get out of the way. ever.
Great video an very informative. I still think I would love the Polaris general
We certainly did. It's the best machine for a number of people. Glad you enjoyed the shootout.
Yamaha Rocks! Just sayin.
Is they built a great machine.
Sounds like a pretty well fought out opinion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@dlcogburn6992 Thanks for letting us know. We called around and were looking for shock options for all 3 of these cars out of curiosity.
Yamaha by far the best machine
We liked it.
Yamaha all the way
If you want to have a new friend with a close personal relationship buy Can Am or Polaris.
Great review. Really enjoyed watching to the very end.
Thank you and thank you!
I think Can Am makes about two side by sides a year. Where the hell are they?
They are slowly getting them out. Eric, who drove in this shootout just received his new Maverick X3.
If I had to make any complaints with my 2021 XTR it would be cab noise, MPG (14.5 so far), tire sling, weight (1800+ lb.s) and dust (I have front and rear windows). All that said I love this machine. It flat azz flies.
With durability comes weight. No way around it.
Alsome shoot out thanks I love the R Max
Glad you enjoyed it. It was a heck of a big project.

Next time can you compare the three with ease of Maintenance like air filter and oil change that should be on your list. When I buy an expensive machine I want it be the easiest not a pain in the ass when it comes to changing the oil and Air filter.
Great suggestion.
Thank you for the input. Really appreciated!
@@Holden-McGroin No problem. We're always happy to talk side-by-side.
Commander looks best all-rounder among this group. Thus making it practical purchase. ☝️😎
