Wow! Patrick was 62 here. I'm glad he had another thirty great years to go.......... Nice guys don't always finish last; and as Ms. Lumley said, "He's an extraordinary man". With that said, Ms. Lumley is no less extraordinary in her own right. Great fun to accidentally come upon this video tonight. Great memories as well.......... This teeters almost on criminal, that the whole show isn't presented here......... none the less, RIP Sir......... we miss you.
Ian Hendry not only suffered from extreme alcoholism, but he also had a series of strokes that ultimately ruined his speech. Only eight years before, he had appeared on "The New Avengers," but as rogue agent Irwin Gunner, not his original role as Dr. David Keel. Even then, his career was pretty well hitting the skids, and he bore only a passing resemblence to himself in his heyday. A great talent as actor and writer, and a life cut so tragically short by a horrible disease.
It's a testament to the fact that ALL of the leading ladies that Patrick Macnee worked with on "The Avengers" and "The New Avengers" thought so very highly of him......
Wow! This was a quarter century ago! Patrick Macnee is 87 years old now. John Wickham Gascoyne Beresford Steed will always be one of my favourite characters! Love you, Patrick Macnee!
Just watched today (8/21/2014) the episode where they (TIYL) show Dianna Rigg fighting the bad guys in "Death's Door". I haven't seen that episode since the seventies--maybe sixties--and it is the one episode I always remembered where Steed shoots an enemy with a single bullet through a hole in a wooden wall behind which he was hiding. I never remembered the rest of the episode but only that particular scene.
That's great! Don't remember seeing this, so even more welcome. Pity you couldn't put up the whole thing in two parts, but this is certainly better than nothing. Thanks! :-)
And well done to Patrick - 90 years old and still going strong - sadly can't do much acting nowdays to his age and arthritis but always a true gentlemen
Scheduling a show like "This is your Life" had to be a nightmare when dealing with actors and professional responsabilities but it was a real shame Diana Rigg wasn't there.
A lot of people have commented about Ian Hendry's state of health and dying of alcohol related reasons at a young age. A lot of people know 'actors' drank a lot back then, part of their clique / culture. Fact is, just because your 'mates' drink doesn't mean you have to to 'fit in' or drink to feel more manly which is what many now dead actors like Burton or Hendry, Reed or Harris thought - fact is, it lead to addiction, bad health and early deaths as well as ruining their careers.
I always thought it was rather tragic that a very talented and underrated actor like Ian Hendry passed away aged only 53. I read it was from a stomach hemorrhage and was rather sudden but seeing Hendry here (a matter of months before his death) he looks more like a man approaching 70 than 53. So bloated and withered. He also sounded half cut and he seemed to be cut rather short by Eamonn Andrews when he started talking. May he rest in peace!
I've been avoiding seeing this as it was a very sad final appearance for the great Ian Hendry. I feel Eamonn was rather rude in cutting him off though. And it was clear that he (Ian) and Patrick had great affection for each other even from the few seconds you see of them here.
Nice bid. Ian Hendry, loved him in Theater of Blood, and seeing this is pretty sad how some people abuse themselves into an early grave, and worse when they seemingly had everything. He must not have been a happy person on the inside.
Quality of film is probably from being recorded on video tape and later transferred to proper digital years later. Early 80s videotape had some severe technical problems and would often end up with synquing errors of sound and picture as well as some edge blurring and pixelation when converted to digital
Poor Venus Smith (Julie Stevens) and Dr Martin King (Jon Rollason) always skipped over. My question for Joanna Lumley would be "why did you guit Sapphire & Steel leaving it to end on a very annoying cliffhanger."
The story is that Hendry turned up pissed for the TIYL appearance, so Andrews was told to keep Hendry's bit brief and "move him along". Hence the cutting off and bum's rush he gets. Aside from that, I wonder what the hell was wrong with his stomach, to be so distended like that? It's not just a fat-man's stomach (as Hendry isn't fat) - he must have had a growth or something.
Ian had a lot of health problems towards the end. www.lulu.com/shop/gabriel-hershman/send-in-the-clowns-the-yo-yo-life-of-ian-hendry/paperback/product-21253096.html
"Fido" Is The Coolest Car Ever! So is the man that drove her! Say there, about The LORD Jesus Christ, do YOU Know Him Personally? I certainly do! He Is Perfect Agape Love. I'm goin' up to be with Him always, ARE YOU? Eternity has No Time, it simply is. Ponder the immense Creation above, does it end? Yes? Then where? C'ya here, there or in the air. CJ-4-JC always 'n forever 😀🕶
Do you work in tv? ;) I still think hes boring and I doubt I'll meet the likes of Wogan, Parky, Forsythe or even the 'big' tv execs so I feel I can stand by my view, besides it wouldn't surprise me if even he was a nasty so and so, look at Saville among others.
Yes, Gareth, he did look very poorly. Still, he did a lot of great work during his career, all covered extensively in the new biography available from Lulu and Amazon.
yes he did die of gastrointestinal hemorrhage but apparently it 'stemmed from cirrhosis of the liver' not throat cancer which he denied having. So which report is actually true - I have no idea! I suppose anyone would try & hush up whatever illnesses they had if their career depended on it. But his stomach does look very distended
I have always loved this true English gentleman and fine actor since i was a boy.one of the best English language speakers.
Living on the earth with Patrick Macee was a complete pleasure. A gentleman of the highest order.

Just a really nice man ,who no one had a bad word for ! R I P Mr John Steed,(because To me, that is who you are, and always will be)
Just wonderful! I loved all the comments to Patrick, and in particular; those of Dianna Rigg And Joanna Lumley. They brought tears to my eyes!
RIP DIANA RIGG , unforgettable
It's amazing how sincere these people are.
I know,he died happy and satisfied. Too bad they didn't do that for Diana rigg and Honor blackman.
He was touched by the entire event, but he was really hit hard when Diana Rigg made a statement.
Sadly, gentlemen like Patrick Macnee are lacking these days.

Scheduling a show like "This is your Life" had to be a nightmare when dealing with actors and professional responsabilities but it was a real shame Diana Rigg wasn't there.
I wish we could see the whole thing.
Ian Hendry - what terrible destruction alcohol can wreak
It was sad that Ian Hendry passed too soon but alcohol just did him in.
RIP Steed.
@MeBenHalpin 14th November 1984. Surprised Patrick Macnee's "This Is Your Life" wasn't done in the early 1960s at the height of his Avenger's fame.
rip. Patrick. Macnee.aka.john.steed
Imagine putting your arms around Honor Blackman and Joanna Lumley...at the same time.
a tru gentlemen rip Patrick

Ian Hendry's last tv appearance.
I always thought it was rather tragic that a very talented and underrated actor like Ian Hendry passed away aged only 53. Yes l thought he sounded drunk, however someone mentioned the strokes effected his speech, sadly close to his death.
R.I.P
too cool
Patrick was filling up during the comments from the girls. I must admit I was beginning to as well!
I've been avoiding seeing this as it was a very sad final appearance for the great Ian Hendry. I feel Eamonn was rather rude in cutting him off though. And it was clear that he (Ian) and Patrick had great affection for each other even from the few seconds you see of them here.
Wow, didn't recognise Ian Hendry!
Is there any chance you could please post all of this? Patrick Macnee had such an amazing life, I'd love to see the whole episode!
I've just posted the full programme (at the time my RUclips account would only let me upload short clips). Enjoy.
Really terrible to see Ian Hendry in such a shocking physical state, should have been a leading star in th 60's/70's. Very sad.
Plus Ian Hendry kinda of last work as he died at the end of 1984 8-(
WOW! Ian Hendry is pregnant!!!
ended up in colton,ca...like wyatt earpe before him.
🌹🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌹
Jennifer Croxton (Lady Diana Forbes-Blakeney) should have been on that TV show.
RIP
Don't say that to anyone works in TV - he's a god to them
Nice bid. Ian Hendry, loved him in Theater of Blood, and seeing this is pretty sad how some people abuse themselves into an early grave, and worse when they seemingly had everything. He must not have been a happy person on the inside.
is it my pc or is it the film quality its awful trying to watch it

what did he say
Joanna Lumley looks like Camilla Parker Bowles in this. Toothy grin and same blonde hair style.
Poor Venus Smith (Julie Stevens) and Dr Martin King (Jon Rollason) always skipped over.
My question for Joanna Lumley would be "why did you guit Sapphire & Steel leaving it to end on a very annoying cliffhanger."
@RichardElden
I think he died later that year.
A early version of kingsmen I think it was all very gallent
jajaja
You are right!!
He died from a stomach haemorrhage, Christmas Eve 1984, aged 53...this was his last appearance

cirrhosis, i read, either way it's very sad to see him looking so ill.
Belly full of ascites due to cirrhosis

He later gave birth to a gin bottle lol

That's a natty blouson Gareth Hunt's wearing.
Count Iblis......this is your life!
Poor old Ian Hendry wasn't doing too well on this show, hardly surprising when he died the same year.
...poor old Ian Hendry- by that time was an alcoholic - he couldn't speak coherently here and died shortly afterwards
He couldn't speak properly because he had throat cancer. That's what he died of.
...he died of cirrhosis of the liver. That's what he died of.
No, he died of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage caused by the throat cancer. That's why he was unable to speak properly. Look it up.
yes he did die of gastrointestinal hemorrhage but apparently it 'stemmed from cirrhosis of the liver' not throat cancer which he denied having. So which report is actually true - I have no idea!
I suppose anyone would try & hush up whatever illnesses they had if their career depended on it. But his stomach does look very distended
whatever the cause, it is very sad indeed to see him looking so ill.
boy he had sum fitt women
I also disliked Eamon Andrews even when I was a kid - he just seemed to bore me and seemed cheesy...
Ayo?
Canada's own Linda Thorson aged well in '84. Diana theatrical voice
very charming in this clip. Shame Ian Hendry was on this piss.
Shame you can't get your facts straight
I hated that program
