- Sometimes the locks can get corroded. Here is a quick tip on how to change the barrel or lubricate the old one with graphite, without taking the handle off.
I have set up a Patreon as I would like to get a higher speed upload, which means I get post more videos, AND in 1080
Takes me about 2.5 hours to upload a 15 minutes at the moment.
I will be giving credits to my supporters at the end of my videos from now on. I am very grateful to one and all!

If you have a pre 2005 Land Rover problem and do not know how to fix it, drop me a line! Maybe I can help!

Bloody brilliant! I snapped my last door key and had to replace both barrels. Job was done in 45 mins! Thanks a lot!
Glad it helped
Thanks for sharing this! you save me a lot of time. The rest of the video's is also super helpful! I ended up binge watching some with a beer for repairs I don't even need to do yet :) All the best from a proud dutch 300TDI owner
Glad it was helpful!
I am so sick of people using WD40 for bloody everything - good to hear a voice of sanity (and accuracy).
You continue to be a legend 👍🏻🙂 I I constantly ask myself, why didn't I think of that 🤣 just made this afternoon's job so much easier. Thanks again
Glad I could help!
My barrels have no keys and I want to change them. I got as far as getting the screw out using your method, but that was it! Barrel wouldn't move for love or money!
Excellent video and tip.. currently on long trip. Lock barrel came out last night.. arggh! Hopefully screw still there.
Oh Dear!
the original door frame had drain holes in the top of the bottom frame - let's hope it has not dropped down the hole!
But because you waxed the inside of the door real good, then there is a chance the screw is stuck in the wax - you did wax it right?
Use Loctite when replacing
Mike
you mentioned that sometimes the screws come loose on the back of the barrel, this happens relatively frequently on mine, was wondering if you had any tips to stop this happening, it got to the stage where when I pulled up at work one dark and dismal morning the barrel fell out as I locked up, resulting in me crawling around on my hands and knees looking for it.
Have you any suggestions to improve door-locking security in general, without opting for the Aluminium type handles ('92, 90 200Tdi pickup)?
Having seen you simply knock-out the lock in another video, I wondered if there was either any better door-locks or alternative deadlocks available?
Nope, they are all completely crap - from beginning to end
Thank you , Great info
Puma I'm working on has three different keys, one for driver's and ignition, another for the passenger side that you have to apply just the right amount of pressure toward the door to unlock, and yet another for the rear where the barrel randomly jams exactly halfway. Would love to understand the mindset of the monkey that worked on them last.
Excellent choice cuts squadron leader..😁pip pips and carryon
Great tip thanks! My 90 passenger door sometimes won’t unlock without pushing the button slightly. It’s showing movement on the crank on the end of the barrel do you think this is the problem ?
Could be - maybe worth inspecting or replacing
Thanks for another great video!!!
Thanks AJ!
Mike
Hi Pal, great video, can you do one on removing ignition barrel from an old army land rover series 3 with no key, please
I used to destroy the old barrel by progressively drilling out the old barrel about 1 cm deep, until it got to a point the guts used to fall out - then remove the guts with a pick until the old barrel will turn - then you can turn the barrel until the wee hole lines up for the push pin that is in the barrel (you will see this on your new barrel) - push the pin down and extract the old barrel
The other way is to hammer a screwdriver in and shear the barrel off, but you can cause more damage
You cannot save the old barrel - not unless you take it to a lock smith which will cost as much as a whole assembly
@@BritannicaRestorations thanks pal will give it a go. 👍👍
Love your videos, keep them coming 😊
Hi Mike
Thank you so much for the video!
Will it be the same on a Defender Td5 MY 2001?
I guess they don't have this screw, right?
How do I get out the barrel on newer models (Td5)?
Thank you so much for your help!
Chris
It's been a long time since I played with a Td5 - not many here, but I had an idea they were the same - I will have to check
Had a look and they do not have the screw on the Td5 but a star-lock washer like below
ever-hardware.com/starlock-washer-push-clips-metric-shaft.html
which is a good thing as the screws come lose
To get the barrel out I believe you have to remove the star-lock, which means removing the handle - BUT the screws holding the handle on sometimes are a bugger to get out and you end up replacing the handle!
CXB000020PMA Right
CXB000030PMA Left
Screws are usually not included
SE105101L screw
WC105001L washer
Barrels with key
CWB000260MMM (2 x barrels)
The star-locks are not sold separately but you can get them from a good fastening supplier
Very interesting video. However is this the same for a 2007 TDCI model? Thanks in advance
No the lock is held in with a circlip (better idea)
Hi there, I’ve followed your tips but the screw that I need to un-do is ever so tight/rusted in place and I can’t manage it. What would be best, stripping the door right down and using a pair of mole grips? Thanks
Send me a pic to britrest@britrest.com
that is helpful does the same apply for the back door lock? Ive gotten the barrel out of the old lock and it will not go in to the new lock, just juts out? Any thoughts?
Sounds like the spring pin is not locating in the latch mechanism
@@BritannicaRestorations ok I will have another look. Thanks for the videos keep them coming
But how do I open the door if it won't open from the outside. Tried from the inside aswell with no joy. Need the door open so I can change the barrel. He
You need to get the door card off - not impossible on a locked door - once in you can trigger the latch
Thanks so much for making your videos. They're a great help. Any advice on replacing a lock barrel on a 1990's safari door? It's a replacement door without a key...
I did a video on the front doors which should have the same latch

Mike
@@BritannicaRestorations I just watched it. Thanks so much!
The barrels are cheap, so don't even think about renovating them!
If you want matching keys, then get a set of 3 matching barrels and replace the fronts as well as the back (fronts are very easy to change) - you will end up with 6 keys!
Mike
@@BritannicaRestorations I just bought the one, I should have got the three of them like you said. I just might order the 3, like you said, they're cheap enough!
@@BritannicaRestorations I did what you said in the video and it worked a charm. I never had a key for the safari door and closed the it from the inside with a stick. I'm all posh now with my new lock!
Very helpful, thanks.
What is the part number for this barrel, please?
I went to replace mine and realised that the new ones are too short, with no screw hole at the back.
You didn't mention what model it is so I am assuming it is a Td5 or later
Start looking here
www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-rover-defender-body-chassis/doors/barrel-lock-keys_52635#1
Just realised that you have to split the barrel before inserting the new one. Every day is a school day.
Try MTC6503 which fits Defender till 1A. It is a kit with two barrels and four keys.
Hi Mike, tried this method on my 1994 and the screw will not turn, just rotates the lock barrel slightly, tried to oil it in case it was seized but this didn’t help. Any ideas?
Sounds as if you need a handle - too much corrosion
Hi Mike Looked forward to doing this today as i watched the video a while ago so bought the genuine 3 door and ignition kit for my Puma but the barrel end is different as it do'snt have the screw at the end any idea as how to do it as i pre drilled ready but did'nt look at the barrel till i tried with the screwdriver :} Peter
PeterI know the barrels for the Td5 were as long as the ignitions switch, but to be honest I have not seena Puma here in Canada yet, never mind work on one!Let me see what I can find in my notesMike
@@BritannicaRestorations Thanks Mike
Peter I had a look and indeed they have changed the crappy small screw idea for some sort of clip
I found an image here
www.ebay.co.uk/p/Land-Rover-CXB500200PMA/1515839844
I suppose you remove the clip?
Not sure
Mike
great tip thanks
Hi, what is the name of the part that the barrel slides into and is held by the pin ? Mine are completely impossible to separate. I have new barrels and thought if I could just by this part I could replace both.
Its part 8 in this diagram.
The part you need is in the handle itself - I do not think it is sold separately
really useful, thanks a lot!
Thank you!
Mike
my door handle button broke off.. is it possible to change the button without taking the hole handle off and replacing it?
Waste of time to be honest - you cannot buy the button separately and handles are cheap (too cheap - that is why they break!)
Mike
Is it the same for the rear door?
no - you have to remove the lock
@@BritannicaRestorations Just about to do that...no manual, just some spanners and a screwdriver!
I thought that there must be a pin involved...then I found this: ruclips.net/video/a2ola69yLcA/видео.html
Sorted it thanks for giving me the confidence (y)
Is it just as easy to replace the rear cargo door barrel?
Hi AJ
No, it is different - if I can find a spare lock I will do a video tomorrow
Mike
Thanks Mike, I took my rear lock apart and couldn't find a screw to remove the barrel. I was also looking at the locking gas cap and took it apart but couldn't remove the barrel. I need to install those barrels you sent me! My current ones are super worn out and look like a flat screw driver would open them.
You cannot change the barrel in the gas cap - for the rear lock, there is a small hole in the tube that holds the lock in - there are some pictures here and instructions
www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/rear-door-lock-removal.171548/
Mike
Now all I need is how to on the fuel cap
If you mean the lock on the cap, then you can strip the cap, but you cannot change the barrel as no parts are available
