      Are you saying you flashed the 26xx v3 turbo unlock bios and overclocked your 1660v3 to 3.9 GHz?

  • @shadowgrue
    @shadowgrue 2 года назад +5

    This comment is a late addition but just in case it helps someone: unlocked Xeons (1650/1660/1680 V3, and possibly 1620 V3) can be overclocked without too much trouble on these T5810 machines. There are two parts to this: first, you need to install ThrottleStop (note: the latest version (9.5) wasn't working well for me so I suggest using version 9.4).
    The second part is putting the machine in sleep mode and then waking it up again. This will disable the regular overclocking and overvolting restrictions that the BIOS puts in place upon initial boot. No hardware or BIOS modifications are required, only the sleep -> wake-up cycle.
    Increase your frequencies by going into ThrottleStop's FIVR panel, tick the 'Overclock' checkbox in the Turbo Ratio Limits section and then increase the turbo ratios, perhaps to 40 initially. On the main panel, also increase the ratios (to the same number) and tick the 'Set Multiplier' checkbox to the left of where you specified the ratios. (Sometimes, pressing the 'Turn On' button, in addition to the prior steps, may help if your changes didn't take for some reason.)
    For higher frequencies, you'll eventually have to increase voltage in the FIVR panel. With my 1650, I was able to get a stable all-core 4.5 GHz overclock at around 1.19V for the CPU core and cache. (Voltages higher than that pretty soon run into other power and thermal limits of these machines.)
    (About the 1620 V3 processors: I think I read somewhere that these can be overclocked but only to 4.3 GHz; I have no first-hand experience about this aspect.)

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  2 года назад

      Thank you for the info, here are some more bits from me: this overclocking method doesn't work with the latest T5810 BIOS and E5-1620 V3, E5-1630 V3 are locked, no overclocking is possible.

    It looks like some of the Precision 5820, which is the model following the 5810, are coming on the used market in the US. Those came out in 2018 so more of them should be coming off their service contracts. I picked up a fairly barebones unit (Xeon W-2102, 16 gb ram, Quadro P400) for USD $200 + $30 shipping from eBay today and plan on installing a $100 Xeon W-2140B QS in it.

    Thank you for your video. I have been looking at that system as a replacement for my Dell T7610. Only thing that bothers me on the casing (I guess the 5810 has the same size) is the limitation regarding graficcard size. I had a MSI RX580 OC and I couldnt close the side panel due to a "strengthening bar" on the inside. Iirc correctly the maximum height was around 113 or 115mm. Theres a much bigger choice with NVIIA cards than with ATI for that.
    Regarding the NVMe Boot. I use a USB Stick with Clover on it as a boot manager and it has a NVMe Driver which let me use the installed NVMe (on a PCIe adapter card) as a boot drive.

    Another excellent review, thank you.
    It is disappointing -- though predictable -- that Dell does not allow CPU or RAM overclocking on this workstation. I agree it feels like a waste to put an OC-able CPU like the E5-1650v3 on a locked-down mobo like this one.
    However, a few possibilities occur to me, ASSUMING you can pick one like the one you bought for a bargain price (I looked just now and saw no such deals). The first is what you alluded to, buy the T5810 and take the E5-1650v3 out and pair it with a OC-friendly mobo. Put in a decent LGA 2011v3 CPU in the Dell, and then flip it on eBay after testing to lower your cost of acquiring the E5-1650v3 (or other OC-able CPU). Alternatively, if you just want a turnkey system but want it for a lower price (or have a specific alternate CPU in mind), replace the E5-1650v3 with the processor of your choice and keep the Dell, but resell the 1650v3 to offset the cost of the CPU you put in (and what you paid for the T5810).
    If I take either of these paths, I would of course need to know which CPUs this T5810 mobo supports. Can I assume that any LGA 2011v3 CPU would work? Also, which one(s) would be a good value if I wanted to flip the Dell, and which one would be good if I wanted to flip the CPU, but still wanted a workstation capable of high-performance calculations (similar to the FinTech benchmark you recently did for a client)?

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  4 года назад +1

      According to the Dell specification, Xeon E5 V3 & V4 are supported, you might have to update BIOS, but any CPU shall work. The best value CPUs for such workstation in my opinion are: E5-2640 V3, E5-2660 V3, E5-2678 V3, E5-2690 V3.

    • @felixfujishiro2304

      @@Miyconst, thank you very much for your advice! I saw that Sandy Bridge E5-1650 is available for just $50, and considered trying that (because single-core performance is important to me, and it could be OC'd over 4.0 GHz), but considering the relative merits of the X79 & X99 motherboards, I think it would be better for me to go with the X99, which means LGA2011-3 socket, so I can't take advantage of this deal. I think I will try the mobo with DDR3 and DDR4 support, which should allow me to do some interesting benchmarks on data science workloads, comparing dual channel with quad channel, 32 GB vs 64 GB, and DDR3 vs DDR4. I will likely choose the E5-2678 if I can get it for a good price (so I can test DDR3 vs DDR4), and will just have to figure out a way to parallelize my algorithms to benefit from its many cores. :-)

    Fantastic, maybe I'll have to buy a USB flash tool to try this on my t7810. Did you modify the bios yourself like you did with the chinese motherboards or did you find an already modified bios? I'm a little hesitant since I've already got my 825w PSU stretched to the max with this dual 2678/dual GPU setup. By the way, you can either use the 6 pins in an 8 pin connector as they are since they have the 3 12v lines, or buy the dell dual 8-pin harness to replace the 6 pin harness. I also have modified a Noctua NH-D9DX i4 3U by moving the 2011 brackets from the top of the heat plate to the bottom, and they screw into the dell backplate holes now, this significantly reduced my temperatures. I used the second set of fan clips that came with the heatsink to attach the default dell fan to the other side of the heatsink and have the noctua fan hooked up to a spare SATA power cable. This way dell diagnostics doesn't throw an error on the fan when it's expecting 5000 rpm out of the 2000 rpm noctua fan through a dell 5 pin adapter.

      This particular workstation had a good power supply. The complete installation kit comes with the card, GPIO header cable, and display port loop through cable. You can use the "low noise" adapters, if the fans are standard 3/4-pin. You can also try to service the fans by lubricating them. For CPU I would recommend E5-2696 V2, almost identical performance to E5-2697 V2, but significantly cheaper.

    I had an old LGA 1155 Dell, what a piece of junk, forget the model number offhand but:
    E3-1270, 8GB and sigh.... All the Dell proprietary crap.
    When I took it apart, the board was ATX for factor and 24 pin power. But that is about where my joy ended.
    I took it apartand moved it into a more open case I had lying around.
    That was when I learned of the "issues" with Dell... Just about all of the headers are "proprietary" fan headers (even the cpu fan!), USB headers, temperature sensors, case intrusion sensor, even the (censored) POWER button!
    Even when gimmicking everything together you can't boot it because you will get a dozen fan/sensor failure errors.
    I don't recall if you can turn off the warnings in the bios, because the stock bios is trash, but I was able to eventually bipass the trouble and get it to boot from my SSD.
    With the GTX750TI I shoved in it, it worked ok for a 4 core machine. But having all of the fans running at 100% (because I rigged them up to Molex plugs) coupled with annoying boot errors made it impractical.
    Build quality is top notch, I will give them that, but it doesn't outweigh the hoops you have to jump through to upgrade if you're an enthusiast.
    I was happy to see an actual Windows 10 Pro key sticker on the case.
    Until I discovered it was one of those OEM/Bios locked keys....
