Thought it was high we took an in depth look at the Thundercats DVD sets I picked up eons ago, especially since we've all been enjoying watching the show again on Saturday Morning Fridays lately! So let's take a closer look at the complete Series of Thundercats on DVD!

I'm so glad you're doing DVD review/disambiguation videos again. That was the reason I subscribed to you all those years back. :) (Of course, I definitely understand that you're free to film and post whatever you want on your channel. I just personally only have interest for your in-depth DVD videos).
I grew up in the 90's, but I still enjoyed Thundercats when it came on Toonami. Even though I was a girl, I would always pretend I was Lion-O. Haha.
I just wish they had better extras, better art on the packaging, and the included Exodus cut.
Maybe one day we'll get a Blu-Ray with all of that in it.

The anointment trials of Lion-O was supposed to air in a 5 part mini series one after another but for some reason that didn't happen and the same thing with when the DVDs were being put together.
They were shown in order when Cartoon Network aired them many years later, CN also re-ordered the listing of episodes from episode 5 to episode 65 to give a more chronological order where Day One of the trial was the 19th episode instead of the 37th episode.

Thank you so much for these vids. I can confidently say that if you love this show, pick up the four volumes with lenticulars instead of the complete. If your worried about space, then obviously go for the complete, but if you have the space, the four volume set is so much more appealing.

Thanks for giving such a detailed explanation of the differences of the releases. Love me some Thundercats. They don't do characters, multiple tools and exotic environments like they use to.

if is not the ULTIMATE HIGH DEFINATION thing ever, they just neglect the content & get blinded to it's true meaning
I still own my VHS collection & you know what. I will always love what it inside those low quality tapes

I'm from the uk and of course have the Region 2 PAL copies, can't believe they're meant to better better picture quality, it's not much to write home about but pretty nice.
Our version has 3 slimline cases in each boxset, cool review man, grew up with Thundercats, makes for very nostalgic viewing, btw no episodes after Thundercats Ho the movie were shown on British tv so there are a lot of episodes I had never seen before getting these sets
Richard Philip did you notice the UK sets are missing extras?
I'd never seen ThunderCats in years and yet I'll probally plan to get a couple of the original ThunderCats on DVD for my upcoming birthday

Just waycing this now and realising that my UK set that I have been injoying for many years now is missing most of the extras....any idea are the American sets still avalible for decent prices?
I just got a red box edition of this quite compact packaging for the set same content as yours tho not lenticular covers for £4 because I traded some dvds which got the second hand price down from £15 which is the best price I seen it for do you know the version of the packaging I am meaning I got

I’ve recently bought the same set you have of Thundercats but for some reason thundercats episode 1 exodus within a few minutes when Jaga is talking to lion-o the picture jumps for like 2 seconds I’ve bought season 1 volume 1 at least 3 times and each copy I’ve received had the same issue wasn’t sure if all the dvds are like that
Around the 3 minute mark, right? Yeah, that's a problem with the original master tape. They COULD fix it digitally, but alas they haven't, so all the releases have the same error. Rest assured there's nothing wrong with your DVDs, that's just a glitch on the original tape.

Just a question: You collect many version of the TMNT shows but you didn't pick up the new version of the Thundercats.... Have you seen any or all the episodes of the 2011 show? Im guessing since you don't have it that if you saw it you didn't like it. I quite enjoyed the new show and love the appearances of the different Thundercats' characters throughout the season and even references to other shows as well. It's really well done and it shows that the people that made it have a love for this franchise.
Sean your rant is justified. Some people who like cartoons, just don't get it that sometimes broadcast masters and mono are the best they're going to get. ;) Another great disambiguation episode. Thanks for mentioning the lack of the Exodus movie with exclusive footage, I happened to keep my copy on video (Released by the Video Collection in the UK). Very interesting to hear that The Unholy Alliance had no sound, it was fixed for the UK release on DVD, which sadly did not have the lenticular covers and just standard pictures of the Thundercats logo. Also Thundercats Ho not being part of ANY broadcast season, that's just wrong. Warner probably put the last seasons together to try and compete with the two 65 episode seasons He-Man had?
Wikipedia has Thundercats Ho! listed as it's own season and that there's five seasons, which makes a little more sense to me personally. :) And you won't have to worry about the DVD's. Usually Warner Bros. are VERY good with keeping stuff in print, once it's been released.

No background score after title at all and i've got mkv files Not from dvd directly, but i downloaded mkv so i assume someone ripped the originals. Now you got me hunting.. But its not too bad, its only one episode. But still would be good to have all complete music. Accidents happen.
They re-released the first half of Season 1 a while back and it had the corrected version of that episode with the full score. I kept both, as the "incomplete" version is an interesting curiousity.
I wish they would be released here in Australia

Amazon still streams the version without the music. I picked up the lenticular cover version of the S1 V1 box set, but it has the corrected disc in it. But after watching both, I have to say that I just prefer the version with the music. The one without definitely seems odd. Plus, you mentioned the ominous silence as the mutants enter Mum-Ra's temple...well, that scene lacks any music in both versions, so you get the creepy feeling as the scene intended. Bottom line, I wouldn't worry about tracking down the version without the music, as I have been trying to do. Oh, and I have some lenticular box sets that are not embossed, and I have a couple without lenticular covers that are also not embossed. Only the S1 V1 set I have has embossed lettering. You cannot go wrong with these set. TC is one of the best cartoons of the 80's and my childhood. Some say it doesn't hold up. I don't know what show they were watching. It definitely is a great series, even today. Plus, the animation house that became Studio Ghibli supposedly worked on it, so go watch it over and over and enjoy it forever now on DVD!
I'm looking to get this on DVD. How do you think these sets compare to the new complete DVD set that was released recently? Outside of packaging do you think it's as good? Thank you for the nice review.
The new set is a straight up repackage. lt's the exact same contents and transfers as this set. The only difference is they moved the extras to a bonus disc. So in terms on contents, the new set is just as good as this one, you won't be missing anything. One of my friends picked it up recently and loves it!
@@zaranyzerak Thanks. Same content at same bit rate with half the discs? 24 for old sets and 12 with complete series.
in the uk we we only got the first season on tv we didnt get season 2 on tv and all we had was the thundercats the movie wich was the first 5 episodes of season 2 made in to an ova wich i didnt know about at the time till the dvd sets came out in the uk and we finaly got season 2.
It wasn't an OVA. It was just those five TV episodes put together to form a "movie" hence the title. But yes only Season 1 was aired on UK TV.

Zaranyzerak same it looks like they are trying way too hard to be Teen Titans Go. They should just bring back the 2011 series since that one ended on a cliff hanger.
I just missed out on Thundercats growing up or at least I don't remember it too well at all. I was a TMNT and Transformers kid mainly and both Thunder Cats and He-Man passed me by. In the case of He-Man I'm glad personally, never liked the look of that show.
I'm in the UK so I don't know if Thundercats just wasn't quite as big or what. I did though strangely enough own alot of the LJN toy action figures, like Lion-O and Mumm-Ra I remember really well. But I don't remember the show at all. It's weird.

Thundercats was quite popular here Blaize, but the BBC only aired Season 1 up till the early 90's, the Thundercats Ho movie was the only other thing we got and that was only a VHS release and yes the toys were distributed here by LJN's UK branch; Rainbow Toys.

Blaize That's fair enough. Also at the time when you were growing up, BBC1 showed more TMNT then Thundercats as the 90's went on. That's probably why you remember that show more?
David315842 Most likely we didn't get back from Germany till the 1991, we also rented alot and I don't think we ever rented Thundercats.

Hey Aaron long time viewer and long time fellow Thundercats fan and transformers and other things been watching you for a long time I was just wondering if you were planning to ever get the recent Thundercats remake animated series from 2011. I highly recommended the remake as a long time Thundercats fan as a personal note the voice actor that plays lion-o in the original series comes back in play liion-o 's dad in the new series.

No? Not sure why I would, as it's all the exact same content on the set I already have. I only double dip if there's a significant difference in content, I don't need to own every single release of something otherwise.
Sean yeah yve herd another complaint about the set it is that the discs aren't contained very well in the case and apparently the extras are just rehashed from these box sets you show in your vids
I remember leaving off when Bangil ,pumra and link O the blind older cat just were rescued from the Island. Their still on New Earth I believe . So yeah m looking forward to watching a whole new Batch of shows. Didn't see. One thing though I did see the new ones when they came out with the kinda punk looking hair ,but didn't like them as much or even near as much.

PAL is a TV standard.. DVD is a Region Standard. You can't mix the two. but you said "region 2 is pal"
Without assuming people use a multi-region player, or code free player, your basically assuming in Australia i can play Region 2 DVD's by default
Not sure how that was confusing, but okay. I completely understand all of that as I've been working with video since the 80s. Apologies if I didn't explain it adequately in this particular video from a decade ago, I thought I was pretty clear on the distinction between Region coding and video standards. I'm usually quite specific about that sort of thing because they are often confused or misunderstood. Such as when people see a DVD is Region Free they automatically assume it will work in their player no matter what, but nope - not if it's a PAL DVD you're trying to play in an NTSC player or vice-versa. Needs to be your video standard AND region coding (or region free and your video standard) if it's going to work. I discuss the differences and distinction between them quite frequently in my content and make a sincere effort to be clear on the differences.
Why would people the the DVD transfer is the same as the VHS
The masters are the broadcast quality master tapes. They are not VHS tapes, they are broadcast quality tapes which are much higher resolution than VHS. DVD is more than double the resolution of VHS, so even taken from the same master tapes the quality is substantially better than VHS could ever be.

@@lookingforahookup Check out my channel, I literally just uploaded the uncut version of Exodus, running at 25 mins and 52 seconds, earlier today. It's not the VHS version per se, as it doesn't include Unholy Alliance, Berbils and Slaves of Castle Plun-Darr, but it's the full version that you find on the VHS.
@@TheAmateurEditor I did a fan edit of that episode a while back. Using as much of the DVD footage as possible for higher quality, then dropping in the extra bits from the VHS release. We watch that version of the episode now when we do group viewings of the show.

Yes. There are videocassettes on almost every shelf, in the back row. That bottom right shelf had some more. No idea what was on those particular tapes, I've shuffled the contents of the shelves around many times since.
