The writing for this short film was exceptional! I love the running motifs of ice/winter in contrast to the fire at the end. Yeonwoo melting Dong-ah’s frosty exterior and rigid belief that he can’t change anything in his life made me think that he was trying to help Dong-ah break out of his shell, but the ending really made me question his motives. Is all change good change? Is it best to stay in one place, or do whatever you can to break free? I love how thought-provoking the material was, and the script/writing really stood out! Loved loved loved this.
Interesting and intensely powerful story. The storyline and characters were very well portrayed in this short film. Well written and beautifully executed.
@@minV5326 ikr someone said that yeonwoo was a ghost, and on one hand i think thats right cuz he always wore the same uniform and was there for Dong-ah whenever he needed someone to rely on. But on the other hand i just think yeonwoo is a lonely guy who watched Dong-ah give food to the cat and one day decided to talk to him because Dong-ah seemed as lonely as him. Idk honestly its something between the two for me
I love short films in general. And this one touched another sad line. It's the East Asian stories that often give me a different vibe. The more I see them, the more I feel that these societies must be so cold towards individuals. It seems like it's more about keeping up appearances than dealing with the emotional and social issues of the individuals. There are so many problems, but they are ignored and individuals are left behind to keep up a high-maintenance facade. As if problems would go away if left unaddressed. We all need warmth, assurance and even trust, otherwise we will fall apart. So great work from all the participants, because you managed to trigger thoughts and feelings that will keep the audience busy for a while.
I honestly forgot I was watching a movie. I was so drawn into this story. Their acting was so authentic and I felt connected to the narrative immediately.
Wasn't planning on crying today ㅠㅠ But my god, I loved everything about this! And the acting was PHENOMENAL- Boy, Kim Dong's breakdown broke me too ;-;
My assumption is, although I don't know if this assumption is true or not hahaha, they are both the same person, maybe a split personality? Or Yoonwoo is a hallucinatory manifestation of someone beside him. When his mother left him, his father was violent towards him, maybe Yoonwoo was the person he hoped to be "real", someone who was by his side and tried to understand him. That's why at the end there is a scene when the cat is still there, he already calls the cat using the name that Yoonwoo gave him, even though the two of them haven't met yet when the cat is still on the road. So maybe the cat's name came from him alone, and the scenes with Yoonwoo are actually scenes of him alone, the one who healed the wound himself, the one who lit the fire too, he was all alone 😢
There is a uniquely tender , sensitive fashion that Asian writers deal with this human affect, like no other.There exquisite almond eyes tear like no other.
This is a hauntingly beautiful short film. I have questions, though. My take, which may seem strange: Kim Dong is an emotionally frozen boy who has endured abandonment by his mother, and physical abuse from his father. He drops out of school, and the only humanity and compassion that he demonstrates are for a feral cat. The cat freezes to death, but even knowing the cat is dead, Kim Dong still takes its remains home to try to revive it with a hair dryer. Of course that does not work. So (if I'm not mistaken) he keeps the dead cat in a black bag in his refrigerator. After the cat dies another boy, Song Yeon-woo, suddenly appears. He becomes attached to Kim Dong, who at first shows no response to this new person in his small universe. After a while, they form a strange, if still somewhat distant, relationship. Possibly even a friendship. One day Yeon-woo witnesses Kim Dong running away after having just been beaten by his father. He asks why Kim Dong stays in that situation and doesn't try to get away or change anything. Then Yeon-woo leaves. We see Kim Dong try to talk himself into strangling his sleeping father, but he can't do it. We see the suggestion, through flickering light on his father's bed and face, and the sound of something burning, that Kim Dong's house is on fire. Then we see Yeon-woo in the alley with a lighter. And we see more flickering light on his face as he stands in the alley, again suggesting something is burning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last scene: We see Kim Dong in the alley, talking to the (apparently) same cat, which he is trying to feed. The last scene shows Kim Dong in the background, crouching near the black cat......which is not actually moving....... .....while in the foreground we see Yeon-woo sitting around a corner not far from where Kim Dong is crouching. Is this after the fire? Is Kim Dong trying to feed the already dead cat because his perception of reality is skewed? ------ OR, alternative scenario----- The ending scene, where Kim Dong is feeding the cat and Yeon-Woo is sitting around the corner....... could be a flashback to a point when the cat was still alive, before Yeon-woo and Kim Dong met. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More questions: Is Yeon-woo real? Or a figment of imagination for a boy (Kim Dong) with mental illness? If Yeon-woo is real, could he ALSO be mentally ill? Did he start the fire as a way to protect Kim Dong? If the fire was real, did Kim Dong survive it? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm sure I won't receive any definitive answers, but again......I just have to say how beautiful and haunting the film is. And it's wonderfully, sensitively acted. I enjoyed it very much.
Yes - note how after Kim-dong is afraid to strangle his father - then (somehow) the fire starts - Yeon-woo is the one flicking the lighter. It seems to me Kim-dong has separated himself into two halves - the brave good half (Neon-Woo) and the cowardly 'bad' half - maybe.. My take on the film anyway.@@JAMoore-zz3ki
Yes. Some people theorise that the other boy is the main actors imagination. A brave and understanding person to the main actor, and it was actually him all along, him who killed his father. That's why he knew the name of the cat the friend named in his imagination, even before 'he met him'.
