I read theLadder of Divine Ascent, THE WAY OF THE PILGRIM and THE PILGRIM FINDS HIS WAY 30 years ago when I was in a nun in a Hindu Convent . The Philokalia also transformed my life and I became converted to Christ as a result of it, as well as some of the works by and about the Catholic saints. I left the Vedanta convent to get BAPTIZED and become Catholic. It's a long story, but I was rejected in the RCIA class because I had been divorced. Mind you, it was a non-sacramental marriage between 2 unbaptized persons. Well, the nun thought I had to get an annulment before I could be BAPTIZED. SIGH. Eventually I did get baptized and I did become Catholic and NOW I have lived for 20 years as an urban hermit. There is not much familiarity with monasticism among people in the parishes. I have been very surprised at how little of the faith is practiced by Catholics. Many are living together outside of marriage, contracepting, all sorts of things. I would feel like a hermit even if I was NOT living alone for Christ. LIstening to this talk made me feel I was "home" again.

Me too. It's like so many books on Catholic theology, writings of the Saints etc whereby it is most profitable to read them again and again... and depending where we are in the spiritual life, we often learn something new everytime!
