I think Vulture mag had an article with the top 10 mixing engineers about the most difficult/complex song they had ever worked on. One of them listed this song and said in general because BTS songs have upwards for 200 or more tracks because of all the adlibs etc they can be complex but this one was really complex and like mixing 3 separate songs. The way Yoongi uses the mood change to create a voice for the "shadow self" to explain they are the same. Its such a genius idea and execution in video too. Relaly the trio of Persona - RM, Shadow - Yoongi, Ego - Jhope. They each took an old BTS song sample and then did a song in their own style to explain/exhibit one of Jungs ideas of self. They also play into each other asking and answering questions one song asks in another song. Its beyond genius of all 3 how they work yet are fully in the style of each artist.

Yoongi is a genius and I don’t say it just because I’m ARMY. Anyone who checks his lyrics, his production… everything he does is so well thought out, the way he expresses himself is incredible

This song is from the Map of the Soul: 7 album. This album and the one they released before this one, Map of the Soul: Persona, are based on psychiatrist Carl Jung's Map of the Soul theory. According to his theory, the psyche is divided into three parts, Persona, Shadow, and Ego. There were originally going to be three albums but they ended up combining the last two albums to make MotS: 7. Each of the three rappers has a song about one of the three aspects of the psyche and this one is Suga's, of course. The part of the song were he's listing the things he wants to be are a throwback to their very first single, No More Dream, where he says that he wants "a big house, big cars and big rings". Yoongi has always been honest about being greedy but over the years, that has changed and, in some songs, he has admitted that his greed has become "a leash" that chokes him. In these more recent years, he's been talking about the down sides of being rich and famous and this song is a part of that. Yoongi is more raw and honest in his lyrics than any other artist that I've ever listened to and I can't help but admire and respect him for that.

Oh my gosh Map of the Soul is my fave BTS album of them all (I like all of the others too but for different unique reasons). Yoongi was perfect for the interlude. Namjoon has a strong, introspective intro with 'Persona' and he introduced the album. Yoongi delivered a grounded, vulnerable yet powerful interlude with 'Shadow'. Then Hobi gave us a sweet, celebratory, youthful sounding outro with 'Ego'. And all 3 parts of this song trilogy go hand in hand despite each member tackling their topic based on personal ideas and feelings. Yet at the same time all of the parts are somewhat connected and cohesive. BTS's brilliance is wonderful to see. Yoongi was so honest here as he let us into his mind.

Like Jin said on the show Nothing Much Prepared: "I only have around 10 famous people in my phone. A lot of people don't want to be friends with us because they feel pressured." So while they have a lot of adoring fans, they are actually quite isolated and they've probably been burned by fake friends quite a few times as well I can imagine. 😢
I think the way the music changes when it's the shadow "talking" is just brilliant. Pure *chef's kiss* but tbh so is the entire album.

The members talk a lot about how they don't have many idol/industry friends, or how they've been wronged by who they thought were friends, but as you watch Suchwita, you can see Yoongi's social circle is quite large. For example, he had an actress guest, and she mentioned the group chat they're both in where Yoongi is the maknae, and everyone cheers him on. It's so sweet, I'm glad he has these friends that ARMY didn't know about until they told us, which means they don't use him for clout.

Lory, you’ve touched me so much with your reluctant skepticism and still whole hearted embrace of BTS. I love kpop and listen to it almost daily, hoping to find another group besides BTS that will completely resonate on my frequency but I’ve been unsuccessful. Still, so much of K-pop is GOOD music and I wish the world could embrace it on a larger scale. Groups like The Rose (I saw them live in Atlanta and was so impressed and touched by their show); Mamamoo (such powerful exquisite voices);G)Idle, their powerful song writing and mvs haunt me; TXT,watching them grow into adults has been so much fun; Seventeen and OnlyOneOf,the first so much talent, the other being so brave to embrace the Other and sexuality so openly. In the end though, no one has burrowed themselves into my heart like Bangtan.
I’m an old woman of 70 yrs, and my one hope is that I live long enough to see BTS on stage live again. Thank you fpr allowing me to share your journey.

As you saw this song is part of BTS’s album Map of the Soul:7 . This album is phenomenal in concept. They subscribe to Jungian psychology in the album and use it to structure the songs. RM has the intro for this album called Persona, Suga has the interlude called Shadow and J-Hope has the outro called Ego. All solo songs, all named after the components of one’s self theorized by Carl Jung. So each song has a different aspect of one’s self in them. This is Suga’s shadow, it represents the hidden aspects of himself, not inherently good or bad, that are repressed by the Ego and left in the unconscious part of our mind. Carl Jung posited that only by becoming conscious of your shadow one could truly know themselves, accepting the darkest and guilt ridden aspects of their personality as a real part of themselves.
    So much depth is insane.

Yah - even though it's not directly connected to Wings, they continue to explore some of those same themes. That was the central theme of Blood, Sweat and Tears. Ironically I think some of these things led to BTS going on hiatus when they did.

You should definitely react to his song Trivia: Seesaw! The song sounds vibey but the lyrics are very deep, sad but incredibly poetic, him using a seesaw as a metaphor for a relationship, which is GENIUS! It’s also one of the few songs of his in which he mainly sings!
PS: Also, in the song you’ll also hear a female voice and know that her name is Adora. She was a Big Hit producer since 2016 but left in 2020 and now she’s a soloist. She worked on a lot of BTS’ music and you’ll hear her voice a lot in the background of their songs! Much love from România!

This song is from "Map of the Soul: 7" album. It follows the concept of Psychologist Carl Jung's "Map of the soul" which delves into the different dimensions of a human psyche namely: "Persona", "Shadow" and "Ego". BTS made two albums following this psychological concept: "Map of the soul: Persona" and the combination of the concept Shadow and Ego which is "Map of the soul: 7". Sorry to bombard you with this information but I highly recommend you take a deep dive into their concepts to have a better understanding of their songs. Also, the first half of this song, SUGA was singing about this ambitions but when he got up there at the top, he got scared of success and felt lonely. The second part when tone changes to aggresive rap was his shadow talking back to him saying "I am you, you are me, now you know".

This is a brilliant MV. Duality of being an idol & having the realization that being an idol doesn’t make all the shadows of your soul disappear. You still have fears - the knowing you won’t be on top forever and then what? That bad shit happens to you despite fame and money. This MV is based on Jung’s psychology & philosophy of how one becomes a sane person, and how we integrate the pieces of yourself into one whole.
