Well let’s clear up some discrepancies here. John actually played 4 325 Rickenbackers at one time or another. His first was a natural finished ‘58 model that he later had painted black. This is the guitar that was played on the 2/9/64 and 2/23/64 (taped on 2/9/64) Sullivan appearances. When still in NYC, The Beatles were shown 3 guitars by Rickenbacker; a black 325, a fireglow 360/12 and a 4001S bass. McCartney would not take the bass until the following year, but both guitars were accepted. John debuted his new 325 on the 2/16/64 Sullivan show from Miami; this is the guitar shown above. At one time it was dropped, suffering a neck break and was replaced by a fireglow 325 that is now owned by Ringo Starr. The fourth 325 was a one-off 320/12 string that was shipped to England in March 1964. This guitar has also been displayed in the RRHOF.
The guitar in the footage is Johns 1958 model that he bought in Hamburg and played continually right up to and including the 1st Ed Sullivan show ( as seen here ) whereafter he played his replacement 1964 model now on display. He used it continually until early 1966 for studio and concerts. It suffered a bad crack to its neck when it fell off stage during a 1965 christmas show at the Hammersmith Odeon ( now called the Apollo Hammersmith ) in London. He then retired it as the repair was crap, and it was replaced by his Epiphone Casino. His 2 Black rickenbackers can be distinguished by the earlier model having a flat pickguard and no small round control knob to the left ( as we look at it ) of the 4 main round control knobs. The earlier 1958 model was restored in the early 1970s to its original colour of a natural light brown by Ron De Marino, a restorer in New York. It has also been displayed in the now closed John Lennon museum in Japan, alongside this 1964 Rickenbacker and the Epiphone Casino. John also had another black Rickenbacker that was a 12 string version, but this was rarely used and is also now owned by Yoko and Sean Lennon.
Fantastic information, but you forgot that he also had a red sunburst (Fireglo) version with an 'F' hole that he eventually gave to Ringo. He got the Fireglo Ric to use while his black one was being repaired. Ringo still owns the Fireglo Ric. John Fogerty of CCR also used an identical Fireglo Ric that he modified with a Gibson humbucking pickup at the bridge, and a joke ACME nameplate.
The clips from the Ed Sullivan show is from their first appearance. John is actually playing his 1958 Rickenbacker 325, which he modified with a Bigsby vibrato and the silver/nickel chrome Burns knobs. The guitar on display is John's 1964 Rickenbacker 325 (still image at the 1:03 mark), with accent vibrato, dual height pickguard, with a small 5th mixing pot added, and black knobs over the volume and tone pots. He played that guitar from the second Ed Sullivan show onwards until mid to late 1965 when he began experimenting with various guitars. The curator speaks about the switch at the 1:29 mark. Note to nitpick but, the clips are not showing the guitar on display :)
He's right, ya know. The one you see in the Sullivan clip is the '58 gold pick-guarded one, he didn't play the '64 on display until the final appearance. And the thing that happened was Rickenbacker gave him an endorsement guitar. Man, this was some bad reporting, lol.
I was at Red Fenton's side when he died in Mt Vernon IL. In 1963 George Harrison came in Red Fenton's music store and tried a red Rickenbacker, He asked Red if he could get a black one to match John Lennon's. Red, crafty old scoundrel that he was, stripped the red one down and painted it black. George first played it on Ready Steady Go.
I don't travel much these days....but my one wish is to visit and see Lennon' s guitar. I would look at this critical piece of Rock Music for at least an hour. Lennon was my hero, starting with his 1st album. Thank you, Lennon...for my interest in learning guitar.
@Tim Horton George's country gentleman doesn't exist anymore. Because during on one of their tours in 1965, his country gent fell off the roof of the car where it was strapped onto. It fell out and broke into pieces. They couldn't find any more parts of it because this happened late at night.

Johns 325 that he got in Hamburg in 61 was used on the Christmas shows in 64 but retired it as he dropped it and broke the headstock. He got it fixed in the 1970s. It’s not stripped to the bare wood and no longer jetglow. The guitar they are on about here was used up to 1965 with his jumbo and a 12 string version of the 325 as backups
Not true. It was the ‘64 Ric that came off the strap and broke during a ‘65 Christmas show. He used the Rose Morris, the one Ringo auctioned off a few years ago, for the remaining shows. The original ‘58 Capri remains with Sean and Yoko and may even have seen action during either the Double Fantasy or Dec 1980 sessions. The ‘58 didn’t have any damage and the only thing non-original hw-wise on the ‘58 was the white pick guard. John gave the original gold pick guard to Ron DeMarino who did some restoration work. We know that it was the ‘64 that broke because he retired the ‘58 after the first ES show because the middle pickup didn’t work and it didn’t stay in tune. You can see John tuning it on the fly during that first show. Then again, Ric guitars never stay in tune which is the main knock on those guitars.
At 1:21 you can see some tape up by the strap lock. Many people have said that John had the old Shea Stadium song list still taped to his Ric. Pretty cool still seeing it still there. Imagine what this guitar is worth?

Wasn't it sunburst and John had it painted black, i not 100% sure, but i dont think those models or any model came in black, I think they only started making them black after John made his so iconic, because you look at old pictures and he's playing a natural wood color one, and the wood ones actually came with a gold pickguard and then after awhile Rickenbacker started making them with white pick guards,
Ace Alice the 325 was originally natural ( there are photos of it at a trade show before John got it ) around the time The Beatles were smartening themselves up, the guitar was painted black & stayed that colour until John had it restored later in the 70’s.

At least show him playing the right guitar in the clips! That's his original 1959 325 Capri. He played it on the first Sullivan show and Washington DC concert. Then in Miami before the second Sullivan show Rickenbacker gave him the new guitar and George the 12 string. The Capri was "retired" as a back up on stage.
I always wondered why John played that short scale but didn't he learn to play on a small guitar with a very short scale? Maybe the Rickenbacker felt comfortable for that reason...
+fasteddie4145 Apparently, John wanted a smaller scale guitar because he wanted something that felt similar to a banjo. He had learned how to play the banjo, before learning to play the guitar, so the shorter scale and smaller body felt comfortable and familiar, to him.
+John S I'm not really sure what he thought.....I always figured it was what he could find.....I've heard lots of interviews with George about what little selection they had in the early days.....I went through pretty much the same thing when I was young.....it was what I could afford and what was available rather than what I really wanted......still, you can't miss the sound on those early Beatles Records, the Hofner too.......

Minimal research could have helped this story! Lennon used the first Ric 325 from Hamburg in 1962 until the day after the Ed Sullivan Show on Feb 9 '64 when Rickenbacker presented new guitars to the group- a new black Ric 325 for John, a Fireglo 360/12 for George, and a 4001 Bass for Paul (which he refused). John debuted his new 325 the next week in Miami at the Dauville Hotel. The first Ric was retired, as it was barely operable. He used the second Ric as his primary guitar for all of the 64 and 65 touring, as well as on records "A Hard Day's Night", "Beatles For Sale", "Help!" and some of "Rubber Soul". He was given several 325 models by Rickenbacker- including a Fireglo Capri with an "F" hole on the top that he used once at a Christmas show... Ringo reported finding several at Apple in a crate years later- some with strings rusted on potentially having never been played. He took one and has it to this day. They did also furnish him a 12 string 325 that had to be just murder to play and keep in tune! To address the reporter's question, yes, the guitar is 100% definitely the one that played the Cleveland Public Auditorium show in 1964.
John spoke of his this guitar in 1980. He kept it over his bed in the Dakota for years and would play it from time to time. Apparently it didn't age well enough for the studio Double fantasy session recordings

They also had a bass for Paul, but he declined! The 325 replaced John's 1959 model 325 that was barely operable. At least show him playing the right guitar in the clips! That's his original 1959 325 Capri. He played it on the first Sullivan show and Washington DC concert. Then in Miami before the second Sullivan show Rickenbacker gave him the new guitar and George the 12 string. The Capri was "retired" as a back up on stage.
In my youth I had one of these and found the frets/fingerboard to be very small...too small for my fingers anyway, so I changed to a Gretch.
I'm guessing Lennon's hands were at least average-size. It's amazing he chose a short-scale model.
Interestingly enough, the guitar on show is different to the one on the Ed Sullivan clip....check the tone and volume controls.
I always wondered why John played that short scale but didn't he learn to play on a small guitar with a very short scale? Maybe the Rickenbacker felt comfortable for that reason...

He had learned how to play the banjo, before learning to play the guitar, so the shorter scale and smaller body felt comfortable and familiar, to him.

Minimal research could have helped this story! Lennon used the first Ric 325 from Hamburg in 1962 until the day after the Ed Sullivan Show on Feb 9 '64 when Rickenbacker presented new guitars to the group- a new black Ric 325 for John, a Fireglo 360/12 for George, and a 4001 Bass for Paul (which he refused). John debuted his new 325 the next week in Miami at the Dauville Hotel. The first Ric was retired, as it was barely operable. He used the second Ric as his primary guitar for all of the 64 and 65 touring, as well as on records "A Hard Day's Night", "Beatles For Sale", "Help!" and some of "Rubber Soul". He was given several 325 models by Rickenbacker- including a Fireglo Capri with an "F" hole on the top that he used once at a Christmas show... Ringo reported finding several at Apple in a crate years later- some with strings rusted on potentially having never been played. He took one and has it to this day. They did also furnish him a 12 string 325 that had to be just murder to play and keep in tune!
To address the reporter's question, yes, the guitar is 100% definitely the one that played the Cleveland Public Auditorium show in 1964.

John spoke of his this guitar in 1980. He kept it over his bed in the Dakota for years and would play it from time to time. Apparently it didn't age well enough for the studio Double fantasy session recordings

Museum employees handle famous guitars with gloves on. A guitar player would take it out of the case, spin it around, caress it, plug in and touch every square inch trying to get a feel for John Lennon's guitar. Gloves? C'mon. That's torture.

They also had a bass for Paul, but he declined! The 325 replaced John's 1959 model 325 that was barely operable. The one here, the second 325 debuted at the Miami taping of Ed Sullivan the following week, and was John's primary instrument until Rubber Soul when he purchased an Epiphone Casino (also at the Rock Hall) in 1965.
