Great introduction to tools for building your boats. When I began building my Tillamook, I laid out all the ribs on a 4' by 8' sheet of plywood supported on saw horses in my back yard; and made all the cuts with a circular saw using an aluminum mitre square with adjustable angle guide. Simple construction tools and methods are what I liked best about building it. In my case it took about two years to complete, but I also restored another boat in that time as well. While I always wished I had a shop to do the work in, I ended up doing all the work (start to finish) under a shade tree behind the house!
Thanks Jeff, great and very important information! Thanks again!
Waiting for winter to be over to complete my Pescadero boat, these videos you've been posting are getting me excited to work on it again. Got one coat of glass and epoxy on before it got too cold.
Thank you for posting these videos.
Really enjoying these videos Jeff!!! Keep them coming!
Great video, I am just beginning and find these so helpful!
Great video Jeff. I am very much looking forward to your videos where you will show how to use these tools. I'm very new to woodworking and am planning on building a Huntington Harbor kayak from your plans soon.
Great video!👍👍👍 I'm looking forward to the restore videos!
Thanks for all you do
Jigsaw is fine. It kicks up far less saw dust in the air than a circular saw.
Thanks
you should try Shinto Saw Rasp.way better than a regular wood rasp.
I've seen then for sale online and have been wanting to try them.
Thank You Jeff! I have 2 old Stanley planers that I found in a old barn that was being torn down, they need restoration. They are covered in rust. What should I put on them?
Jeff, really love you're boats, and plans. I wonder if there's a way you could host a boat build and invite interested parties to participate while you film the build and then auction or sell it off?
Sounds like a plan. I've thought about having a group build "camp" of sorts, but finding a place to do may be a problem. I was thinking about doing a skiff build and posting each day's work in a vlog.
tldr; the japanese dont like to push things jk i know they are some of the best tools you can get
Thanks. Me: electric plane. I VAPORIZED the piece I was planing, then planed through the power cord. End of that. Mini-circular saw. Poor ergonomics, hard to control. Jig saw is ok for THIN material. Anything over About 1/2”, upside I may be hugging the line, but underneath, likely to be all over the place. Band saw. NOT ME! Actually gotten pretty good with a 7-1/2” circular saw, but I’m left handed so guess where all the sawdust flies. I hate you guys with shops cleaner than my house. And don’t say anything bad about table saws!
I think you missed the opportunity to make a joke when talking about Japanese planes when you could have pulled out a model airplane. But oh well.
Never sharpened your saw in 30 or 40 years?! You aren't using it enough.
