good work on him recommending hathaway tbh. It's the best in the UC timeline to recommend to normies, and i've held this belief since i first saw the film. It's what's gotten me to dive into the whole UC timeline after all. There are better stories in the timeline for sure, but as a standalone film it really works well, from pacing to production it's really something i can play on the telly while having a beer with my normie mates and I wouldnt be anxious whether theyre going to like it or not because im sure they will.

Easily one of the easiest animes to get into for a veteran or a new person in the scene or someone who is skeptic towards anime has to be Vinland Saga. A Silent Voice is an excellent movie. It is such an excellent movie that I find it hard to convince people to read the manga, which believe it or not, is even better. Not because Kyoto did a bad job in any way, but because they had the thankless job of adapting 64 chapters into a two hour long movie, and they pulled it off far better than I could have imagined. But I would still suggest people who are into reading manga to give this one a go, even though you have watched the movie.

    • @AzA609
      @AzA609 10 месяцев назад +6

A Silent Voice is not only perfect, but it is also special to me. I cannot bring myself to give it a rating of 10/10 because that would be assigning it a number, and I feel like I'd be disrespecting the movie by quantifying what it means to me. A mere number won't do justice to properly explain its significance to me.
😅 Yes, it really is that special to me, haha.
I've heard that the manga is supposedly better than the movie, but every time I hear people say this, they also put down the movie by calling it bad in an attempt to promote the manga. I, obviously, didn't appreciate them trashing my beloved anime. I thought anyone who didn't see the movie for the beautiful experience that it is, as I did, was just stupid. This made me automatically dismiss their sentiment about the manga being better.
However, you praised the movie and convinced me that the manga could be even better. Thank you for that. I will read the manga. 👍

@@AzA609 you are welcome. Happy reading. Reading the manga in no way reduced my enjoyment of the movie. I have rewatched the movie and reread the manga multiple times, and enjoyed it each time.
I guess it's because even though KyoAni had to scrap some plot points, they understood the characters and the atmosphere of the story really well. The core message of the story was just as powerful in both media. In manga you just get more of it, (and a bit more closure).
I guess that is the reason I picked up the manga in the first place. I liked the movie so much that I wanted more of it. Usually in similar situations, I have to settle with different stories with some similar elements, but it just so happened that this particular story had a manga which wasn't fully adapted in the movie.

Comedian Bill Burr watched One-Punch Man, because it was promoted on Netflix at the time and he enjoyed it big times, despite having no prior knowledge about anime.

As a youth worker, and someone who's been up to my elbows in anime/videogame culture for at least 30 years, I've spent a lot of time explaining the culture to people who aren't familiar with it, not just parents of young people, but even those in generations above my own who are in their 60's and 70's these days.
There's a few I generally recommend to folks new to the genre, and its like you said, it depends on their tastes. One rule though, no highschool stuff. Most of these people don't want to see that, unless they want to know their teenage child is watching.
For the more action-centred anime, I generally recommend Black Lagoon, its real-world setting and no superpowers means people unfamiliar with anime can relate it back to action tv/movies with just enough smart writing to keep them hooked.
For the more feel-good stuff, I tend to recommend Watanabe's Carole & Tuesday, especially if they're familiar with shows like American Idol, have a disdain for modern mainstream music (which is most older audiences), and has a lot of themes going on in the background that a lot of uninitiated audiences can relate to, such as politics and issues within society. Its also a good way to transition them into more mainstream anime, as its set in the same universe as Cowboy Bebop.
For those old enough to actually know who Alfred Hitchcock is, I tend to recommend Perfect Blue. Its a psychological thriller that is very much in the same vein as the old Alfred Hitchcock movies of old.
Lastly, Hajime no Ippo. While the anime hasn't kept up with the manga, anything that's still going after 30 years is going to get the attention of older audiences and sports fans alike. Exploring the mechanics of the human body like anime does has big appeal to sports nuts, as well as that most of these people know what Rocky is, they can make that connection of the underdog rising through the ranks by boxing (with just the slightest touch of romance that they had often seen with Hong Kong cinema) is something uninitiated audiences tend to really relate to.

Solid picks, to be honest. There are categories where I'd have a different pick, but picking ONE show is hard. and doesn't really make sense, outside of the context of a video. I think for recommending good starter animes, discussing what genre the person in front of you would be interested in first is indeed important, obviously, but then having a single pick is a bit too hit or miss in my opinion. Just have say 3 picks with different appeals, but have those differences be simple enough to be explained in a single sentence to not be overwhelming, and easy to remember.
Like "Oh, so you want something that you feel could be released by HBO if it were live action, basically? Well, you have Attack on Titan, where the last bastion of humanity is threatened by man-eating titans, so if you want great world building and an amazing plot, way deeper than what you may expect rn, with a lot of twists and turns in the story, that's for you. The action's really cool, too. Though, if you feel more like watching some dramatic story about Vikings, you have Vinalnd Saga. That show knows how to do good action, but also have quieter moments, entire arcs even, where you have the characters questioning themselves, the world, their relationships, etc. And if you Want something more like a murder mystery drama, but from the point of view of the murderer, with a bit of supernatural, try Death Note, another classic whith a smart-ass student that has a notebook that's able to kill anyone whose name is written on it. He uses it to kill criminals only, and sinks deeper and deeper into madness, while playing 8D chess against a genius detective."
That's just a random example, but that way I feel like you give more options. because people who don't know shit about anime don't know what a death note is. they just heard of Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Maybe Bleach? and if they're your parents maybe they heard about older shows you don't know of lmao, but that's it. And giving more diversified recommendations may spark interest in the other person like "damn vikings sound dope, but I think I feel like watching a show where you follow the bad guy right now. But I'll keep the other two in the back of my mind". Plus, if the person ends up dropping one, they may end up "Nah, In the end, I can't put up with having the bad guy as the Main character, I think I feel too forced to be sympathetic to him... Let's try this other one with the Titans, that sounds safer" (plot twist incoming lmao)
Recommending your favourite anime is cool, recommending your own first anime is probably even better, but just adapt your suggestion to the person. I've seen friends recommend random seasonal anime bullshit to people that doesn't watch anime... it hurts. it actually physically hurt, please stop. At least give some "tamer" shows. the most important rule is probably the "no anime BS". unless you're recommending an anime for a middle/high schooler, i guess.

I showed Mushishi to my mother (keep in mind i also hadn't watched it at that time) and the vibes were something that i don't see ANY anime do. Yeah it's episodical, but every story is memorable, and the fact that it's told in such a calm and relaxing way, it's a breath of fresh air when most of what anime fans like about the medium is flashy colors and character fight goes zoom (and most of the more popular anime fits in these categories).
Mushishi is unforgetable, man. And also has 0 anime bullshit! Both me and my mother loved the anime to pieces

Kinda missing the hype train, but if you're a newfag, it doesn't really matter. Also it's not action packed, so maybe for hyperactive kids/teens, who want something to explode every minute, it would not be the best series, but hey, hyperactive kids and teens are likely into anime anyway.

I'm also just generally skeptical of dialogue-heavy shows for newbies. It matters that a show hits hard and fast, like Grant said, and ODDTAXI is a slow build to the climax on ep 12.

For the dialogues I agree, that could be a problem. I just don't think there are shows of the same quality, which can hit harder and continue to get consistently better afterwards. Action: Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song. Short, sweet, and hard-hitting, with a lil' sci-fi twist.
Sci-Fi: Cowboy Bebop. Episodic storytelling at its finest.
Romance: Fruits Basket 2019. Bit more dramatic than your typical anime romance, but nontheless incredible. Also, if it was finished, then Bloom into You (please read the manga).
Family pack: Spy x Family. If holiday vibes were an anime.
High school: Kaguya-Sama: Love is War. A somewhat realistic high-school anime that makes you smile/laugh like an idiot and breaks your heart in equal measure, sometimes within the same episode. Also, its english dub? Perfection.
Wild pick: Death Parade. Underrated AF.
Isekai: None. Stay the fuck away.

My go-to recommendation to anyone as their first anime is “Erased”. It’s not my favorite, but it’s good, it’s short, the mystery theme is familiar from western media, and it’s not overwhelming. Still it’s a good intro to several aspects of anime and is a mix of genres.

Jojo’s is not a great recommendation. A lot of people think it doesn’t “get good” until part 2. Part 3 first half is ok in the beginning, and then feels very copy & paste until the dio fight at the end of the second half. Part 4 is great. Part 5. part 6 is also great. There’s a lot of episodes in parts 3-6, and if someone doesn’t like a specific part it could turn them off of the show altogether.

I got my mother into anime… I changed my mothers opinion of anime from it being 25th frame brainwashing tool to her seeing it as an art form. It took me a while, but I started with 5 Centimeters per Second for her. And now she’s acquainted with A Silent Voice, Satoshi Kon, Ghibli, etc.
My 30 year old friend who has already seen Death Note, I recommended Psycho-Pass, Ghost in the Shell, Code Geass, etc. And it’s been good. He binged No Game No Life recently. The conversion is going successfully.
I got into anime through Kill la Kill. I used to watch some Ghibli movies and Naruto. But both were just cartoons to me. They didn’t make me want to seek out more anime. Until I saw a watchmojo video with featured Kill La Kill, and my horny teenage brain was hooked.
So, we all have different paths that led us here.

I introduced my Mum to anime a year ago, we started with attack on titan. By the end of the first season she was into it, and would always ask to watch another episode.
Ive watched three anime movies with her: Wolf children, howls moving castle and Maquia: when the promised flower blooms. The movie she enjoyed the most was Wolf children.
I tried watching Spy x family with her but she didn’t enjoy it, it was too “anime” and childish for her.
I showed her One Punch Man, but she dropped it because of the dry humour and it just didn’t suit her taste.

The first anime I personally watched was My Hero Academia.
But if I were going to recommend anime for new fans to start with, they would be these:
    - Vinland Saga
    - Code Geass
    - Summertime Render
    - Jujutsu Kaisen
    - Moriarty the Patriot
    - Death Note
    - Heavenly Delusion
    - Record of Ragnarok
    - Chainsaw man
    - Parasyte

Pretty good list, not sure about Record of Ragnarok, 1st season has really bad animation, they improved it this season but it isn't really spectacular for a fighting anime

I agree with this. But I think because they are new fans, they won't focus too much on the quality of the animation.

Even though I absolutely love Heavenly Delusion, it might have more "anime bullshit" (it can get a llittle bit too horny) than ideal. I would definitely recommend it for someone who has already watched a few animes.
