  • New Megadeth super shredder Teemu Mantysaari could be BETTER than Marty Friedman. There I said it! In order to find out if this claim bears any truth, we'll be watching Teemu's first performance of Tornado Of Souls to see if he can hang with iconic legends of the past. Will he be able to to inject feeling, technical proficiency and showmanship into the performance? Will Dave Mustaine be impressed? You be the judge!

      He already has tbh.
Check out his guest solos in Bloodshot Dawn - The Image Faded (the first solo after the tapping part), and his guest solo in Buried Realm - Asphyxiation's Lullaby. The solo (more like a collection of different guest solos + solos from the bands guitarists) from The Image Faded already regularly makes it to "Top Metal solos of all time" lists TOGETHER with Tornado Of Souls, despite being released in 2014.
He never got to write any solos in Wintersun because Jari wanted to have 100% control of the writing himself, even if find Teemu's solos to be more musical and follow the chords better than any solo Jari ever wrote for Wintersun.

@@1gbayfisherChris Poland was the best. Marty Friedman said Polands parts were extremely hard to even get down; much less nail them. Chris can play anything and I mean ANYTHING! Don’t let the ‘old guy’ bit fool you for even one second. The advantage Chris has on his stuff is the mis-healed finger on his fret hand. All these new players have some good sweep tricks and picking stuff they do, but none of them can do Poland’s string bends like he can and it’s because of his finger that healed incorrectly. If you listen to Chris’ solos you can hear this unique bending that he does and not Friedman; not Broderick (overrated player) ; and not Kiko can do this bend correctly. I’ve seen Friedman and Broderick really try; but it’s the same as watching this New guy try doing the exotic scale bending that Friedman does, they just cannot replicate it! It’s good enough to pass inspection and go through with a show; but is it really doing either Chris or a Marty any REAL JUSTICE and the answer is absolutely NOT! I hope this new guy will actually sit down and really learn Marty and Chris’ parts like they deserve and those two guys have earned for them to be learned and not just ‘ Ok. Everybody seems happy with the take I’ve got on it, that’s good enough.’ No! SIT THE FUCK DOWN AND LEARN EVERYTHING NOTE FOR NOTE - NOTE BY NOTE - GET THE TIMING DOWN- GET THE BENDING DOWN UNTIL YOU PLAY THEM SIDE BY SIDE AND YOU NOR ANYONE ELSE CAN TELL WHO IS WHO! This I learned the basics I’ll improvise the rest Chris Broderick stuff was crap! Nobody has done Marty or Chris justice yet and it’s time that they do!! I’m tired of everybody just doing the bare minimum and getting the pass. Those two artists deserve better! If this new guy is so badass as everybody claims he is and keeps fanning his ego and saying he’s this new phenomenon, then learning how to play two old school players leads and fills note for note- bend for bend shouldn’t be a problem at all right? It should be easy to smoke those old players with all that “talent” lol NOTE FOR NOTE; BEND FOR BEND, TIMING SPOT ON. Well, let’s see it…

He´s a unicorn in a forrest of shredders with excellent technique, but without a truly unique voice on their instrument. "Better than Marty?" Not even close.

His feel is amazing, and chops. He is an incredible player. I dont think you can play it with "better" feel than what Marty recorded since Marty wrote and created that feel to begin with. Maybe he can execute live with more consistency and accuracy than previous guitarists..lets see. The big question on my mind next is, can he write his own solos with the feel and brilliance of Marty. Can he write songs? He passed the first test with flying colors, lets hope he is also a brilliant creative song writer.

It was awesome seeing Megadeth in 1995 in San Jose, CA 2 rows back in the pit, smashed like sardines. They were so tight back then and his voice was so awesome! Also saw them in like 1994 with Suicidal at Arco Arena in Sacramento. It was worth driving drunk 3 hours to get home....oops, really stupid idea, glad we have Uber nowadays.

There were only 2 noticeable errors on that solo AND not so big... and frankly, it sounds better than both Kiko and Marty because he plays the studio "uncut" version

I saw Megadeth last week and I was blown away how good Teemu is. His playing is pretty spot on to the original with not much extra embellishment. While he may be a better technical player to some degree, Marty's def no slouch, and his style, which is always evolving, sets him apart.

Agree the big thing is feel. He didn’t play the solo perfectly, but you could really hear each note, it was really cleanly played and nothing was rushed. Each note got its full value, which is super hard in a lead like that.

Marty has a completely unique approach to writing song structures and chord progressions .
Kiko is a Jazz Fusion star in South America well versed in Bossa Nova era music
The fact he can play in mega death as a " Jazz guy" shows he can handle playing metal .
It is also notable Vinny Caliouta of Chick Correa and Zappa is the ONLY fusion Jazz drummer to play metal ...and he was in megadeth

It doesn't matter if you can play it perfectly. I have seen 15 year old kids play Marty`s solos note for note.
What matters is that no one as even come close to writing something as near as good as he did.
And no one will because Megadeth is no longer that band and the times are different and Mustaine is a different person than he was back then. We should just be glad that we got two jewels with the best line up Megadeth ever had.

Ok look, IDK this new Megadeth guitarist at all! But I've been listening to Rust In Peace since like 1992 when I was 12 years old and cds were kinda brand new..... I'm going to make a bold statement here and say that under that pressure, playing live in front of how-many people, he played the (ultimate solo) 100% true to the album!!! I'm going to say after hearing him once that he's as good as Marty...

One thing that I've noticed about all of the great metal solo guitarist. They have this buildup of energy before exploding. And they leave it all on the stage. They make you feel triumphant . Every part of the lead is a battle . Culminating in a victory over the powerful opposing forces of the world . Destroying the enemy with your last ounce of energy you can muster.

  • @johnnymoraes23

He did great; but he did improvise a little bit on the last section. But did great yeah!
You gotta count that he probably has been practicing this a lot and have rehearsed the whole show with the band a few times, before the first gig, so, it's not like he's raw there.
Also, he's an experienced player on stage, many albums and tours with Wintersun, so, he has the stage experience needed to just go there and perform.

So long, Kiko. This dude, Teemu, is finally a decent replacement for Marty. As for Marty - he's unique MF (Marty Friedman) player and a composer of all times. I doubt Megadeth would be Megadeth we know now without Marty Friedman.
Anyway, Teemu guy is finally a guitarist Megadeth deserved. I never liked Kiko Loureiro, with his nonchalant approach, like changing damn solos. Don't know if you heard that, but Teemu played the original, record version of solo. Marty was changing it a little bit later on. It's at the beginning.

I want to give a huge shoutout to the newest lead guitarist of Megadeth, he is really talented and amazing player. He played the TOS’s solo so well that when I was hearing it for the first time it felt like Marty’s version, even though he was playing the solo so well but to be honest, no matter how good, talented or technically sounded a guitarist maybe but Tornado of Souls solo was, is and will always be the most important & insanely well composed solo ever played in the history of world heavy metal music. Period!

I’ve seen hundreds of players cover the ToS solo. And in most cases, they forget the most important thing about the solo- feeling. Intent. They want to inject their own style whilst covering the solo. In this case, on stage with the band themselves, this player does it Justice. Does he play the solo better than Marty Friedman? Absolutely not. He’s hitting the same notes. Yet with His intent. The person who created the musicality to fit the backing song has a completely different intent. Their intent was not to hit the notes, per se. It was to accompany the music in a manner that adds to the song in a positive way. His bends are not as expressive as Marty’s, but his note count is just as frenetic. A good replacement for Kiko, and he honors the creator of this great solo.

Kiko played the solo just as well as Teemu. For that matter, there are people all over the internet who can pound out the solo perfectly from a technical standpoint. Nevertheless, props always goes to the guy (Marty) who wrote it to begin with. When you write it you play it with a certain feel that is never 100% replicated the same way by others. Same thing with Eddie Van Halen and his songs and sound.

I can play tornado of souls solo but I do not have knowledge and perfect feeling to compose %10 of it.
