I’ve heard an interesting evolutionary hypothesis behind this…
Male animals have two reproductive strategies: They can impregnate various females and leave, or they can stay and help raise a few children.
It’s possible this is connected to the human feelings of lust versus love in men.
_“I just want to have sex with this woman.”_ versus _“I want to settle down with this woman.”_

TRUE, BUT THAT'S NOT THE WHOLE STORY. These two graphs come from OkCupid co-founder Christian Rudder and are often re-posted without the additional graphs he released at the same time showing who men are _most interested in dating_ (based on search queries and messages sent). For example, while 47-yr-old men do think that 20-yr-old women are _hottest,_ they send messages to women ages 32-50 with a peak at 40. Again this is all based only on OkCupid from 10 years ago, and we have only Rudder's summaries, not the raw data. Still, it seems entirely believable to me that
    • older men think women in their 20s look the best, and also
    • older men aren't actually trying to be with 20-yr-olds but rather with women closer to their own age.
Somehow people often skip reporting the second part. The first part is still a very interesting set of statistics, and I'm not even saying that those graphs alone are misleading. Just incomplete.

Perhaps the question was not worded correctly. I am a 62 year male, and there is a difference between who you find attractive and who you would like to be your partner. Not the same at all. I think that the most physically attractive women are between 18 and 23...generally speaking. Would I want one for a partner? Not on your life. I much prefer women my own age as a partner.

And the survey sample for the data used is massively skewed in that it is only people who elect to use a dating website. What sort of middle-aged man uses OKCupid? It could well be men who have been hurt by previous relationships and now seek what they imagine might be something simpler. It could be desperate men who have never had a relationship and are locked into an adolescent mindset; the arrival of dating sites in the last twenty years or so gave them another chance.
If I am the only exception I would feel rather sad for my entire sex.

I mean... raw physical attraction is one thing, and "I want to have a long term relationship with this person"-attraction is another. And I think maybe what those graphs actually show is the difference in how men and women view (or viewed) a dating site like okcupid. The men clearly saw it as a means for a hookup with someone young and hot, while women maybe were looking for something more long term.

Well obviously because you can't have a long term relationship with someone who has raw, physical attraction - because physical attraction doesn't last over the long term. And don't let anyone delude themselves or you that this isn't true. Leonardo DiCaprio is perhaps the guy who had both the means and opportunity to live out his life based on objective reality of raw, physical attraction. That's the criteria he clearly uses and he is one of the few men who can date who he finds attractive rather than who will date him. End result: he's dated a series of women who are under 25. Super hot models. That is raw, physical attraction. He could have married someone when they were both 25 and now they'd both be 50-something, but he'd be lying if he told you that he found her as attractive as when they first met. Of course, no one criticised Leo until recently even though it's the same person doing the same thing. The risk is that there's a line between having a string of attractive girlfriends and becoming Russell Brand.

Research and communities have found that women are way, way more selective in terms of visual selectivity of partners compared to men. This can be for a few reasons, one being that men are in higher number than women so they cant swipe right on everyone. Two being that because websites like tinder and bumble are mostly used for hookup, and so, because that women have a harder time finding someone sexually attractive so they choose the best of the best for one night hookups. three being that throughout the last few centuries, men had the power of selectivity, but now with the use of internet, women have the power of selectivity too. And this is why communities like Red Pill and Black Pill exist, because men are desperate, and feel failed, and start questioning themselves and their appearance and behavior, this being a daily thing i see in men these days, causing them to develop a frustration towards women, and many times an unaccounted hatred leading to communities such as Red Pill which can be as toxic as you think it can. There was this youtube experiment done where women were handed out tinder account of a man, and not just some account, but an account with a well description, good photograph. The result was that they picked women they liked at first, but by the end of the video, they were desperately swiping right on every woman they saw regardless of attraction. And felt embarrassed and shocked that how can someone even use this app after so much humiliation. Women also have problems with dating but they are one step ahead, being that someone who shows up on date most of the time isn't good enough, can also be dangerous and not safe. But men are stuck on the ground problem till now being that they cannot find enough women to be selective. I frequently read comments about how 2-3 matches a month are a BIG deal for them. In my opinion. An average woman has the same demand in the apps as a very attractive man.

OF COURSE men find 20-ish women most attractive - IT'S BECAUSE THEY ARE. Without question, and fully accepted by virtually all (innately if not consciously) humans are the most attractive in that age range. It is, I very strongly assert, an inarguable fact.
It never ceases to amaze me the huge numbers of women who present as so smart and smug and superior to men, yet just CANNOT see how simple and straightforward we are.
We totally get how complicated you are - beyond me why so many women can't see the inverse.
P.S. Also, it's because male and female humans are genetically and anthropologically programmed to perceive 20-ish humans as the best candidates with whom to create strong, healthy offspring because at that age they are at their most fertile, are at peak physicality, and are most able to care for and defend the offspring.
How can someone who portends to be so smart not see that?

what you’ve said there is just plain wrong and disturbing. its just a common excuse men throw around to justify their disturbing preferences for younger and younger women, going as far as to say that 16 > 26. so no, stop. humans are far more complicated, we no longer choose our partners based on their chances of producing offspring, otherwise IVF wouldn’t exist and other fertility care, because we simply would break up and choose someone else upon hearing that our partner was less fertile, regardless of age. but guess what? that doesn’t happen. when we’re in love, we try everything we can to have offspring with the one we love, not some younger or more fertile person. that’s not how any of this works, except for donors but that’s it. it never ceases to amaze ME that men do everything to justify being disturbing. you choose younger women because they’re easier to control, that’s the only reason. there are a PLETHORA of very attractive older women out there. a lot of women never stop being attractive from when they were young, objectively so. additionally, men also downgrade with age, it’s not just women. men aren’t always at peak fertility themselves and YET women STILL love dating around their age. hmm, wonder why.

It's pretty simple. On an instinctual level, women desire men that look like they can be a provider/protector and they are more practical about this than men are because...... Men CAN NOT depend on women for provision/protection and men that try that are shunned by women. Since men are expected to take care, not only of themselves, but of the woman, what's in it for him? Youth, beauty, fertility. That's the bargain. I don't know how many times we're going to have to look at data like until women realize that 1. They are most valuable when they are young, beautiful and fecund. 2. They are trading sex for resources.
I can do men too. Men need to realize that 1. They are most valuable once they've become competent and essentially proved they can protect and provide. 2. They are trading resources for sex.

About 12 years ago I worked on an event where a psychologist presented data from one of the big dating sites of the time, may also have been OK Cupid. It was all about which qualities are most desirable and for male users the single best quality in a female user was if they were smiling in their pictures. Not age or any broadly accepted beauty standards, just if they looked happy. The qualities that female users were looking for in potential male partners were income level and muscles. Particularly muscular shoulders.
So you can definitely look at data and say that certain metrics make men look bad, but there are also plenty of metrics that make women look bad as well. In all these cases it's important to think about the results in context. For example it might be the case that women are on these sites looking for fun so they go for superficial qualities, whereas men (who often have a harder time finding a partner) might be more likely to be looking for an actual long-term relationship.

Biology doesnt really care for statistics for this point. Women tend to reach their peak in terms of fertility at around 23 or so, and motherhood at around 32. Men are biologically predisposed to be attracted to that age because of the desire to procreate.
Women tend to look for similar ages because of the need to have someone to be a companion in looking after those kids.

They could be 25, 35, 45 or even 55 (I'm 49) and that age means little if they possess the above traits. Oh - bonus points if their main dating profile pic. features a selfie of them with a clean bedroom and a bed that's made. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Ok to be nice about this:
Statistically speaking, 20 year old women are about as young, thin, attractive as they're ever going to be (in the context of dating)
Men like positive youthful energy, high energy, less experience in life (more specifically less life beating them down) , less mentally screwed up , less baggage and women who can have children... women in their later 30s, 40, 50, 60 are obviously rarely any of those things...and the opposite to everything above is not often attractive
I wanted women in their 20s when I was 20...im 37 and the ideal age range hasn't changed because the human biology of a woman hasnt.

Sorry, ma'am, but this is natural human biology. Women have a finite number of fertile eggs in their life. The number of eggs drops precipitously after mid 20s, concluding with menopause when their fertility basically ends. Men can retain fertility for their entire lives. We are hard wired to recognize the physical traits of the most fertile women. It doesn't mean older women can't be attractive, it just means that the average woman's peak attractiveness is at a different time in their lives than men, which also makes sense because human females mature faster than males.
Women see no problem with leading on guys their age and passing them up for older men who have more financial stability, but when the shoe is on the other foot and men are passing up older women for younger women, suddenly they have a problem with the arrangement.

Yes, there's all sorts of outliers and kinks. Emotional attachment can warp anyone's perspective on an individual, or even their general preferences in time. The reason older men pursue relationships with women who aren't 18-21 is simply a result of supply and demand. There aren't enough 18-21 year old women to satisfy the demand, and the ones there are have so much choice, they could pretty much go up to any man in the street married or not and take him back to a hotel room if they wished, that nobody except the most attractive men to them are in with a chance.

The only thing to fear is that because they are still young they are prone to changing their desires/personalities more significantly than older people tend to. But so what?

I think Hannah is missing the point. There's a difference between the women men find attractive and the women we would actually date. Our biology is telling us to the find the youngest, most fertile women we can possibly find, because that's how the species propagates. Of course, that just happens to be young women between the ages of 15 and 25. But in today's world, we don't need to find the youngest, most fertile woman possible. In fact, it's to our advantage to find a woman closer to our own age, because -- let's be honest -- woman between the ages of 15 and 25 tend to be almost unbearably naive. Hence, men past the age of 40 tend to prefer women older than 30. And most men past 50 would prefer a woman who's not young enough to be their daughters.

Many will not like this answer, but almost everyone knows why. Fertility. Men are generally fertile well into their seventies. Women are generally fertile into their late forties, but risky pregnancies develop at 35. We are programmed to procreate.

    • @mx248
      @mx248 4 месяца назад

Many will also not like to hear this either: advanced paternal age, especially after 35, is associated with increased risks for autism, intellectual disabilities, and mental illness. So then just because a man can father children at 70, doesn't mean that he _should._ We're "programmed" (read: conditioned) for a lot of things; it doesn't mean they will all help us at all times, now and forever. We have come as far as we have not because of any base drive to procreate, but because of our capacity to want more for ourselves than what was in the cards we were dealt by nature. Without it, we'd be no better off than animals in a stable.

@@mx248 I definitely don't think a man should procreate at 70. I think a man should marry a woman in his early to mid 20s, have a few children in their 20s and 30s, then enjoy tbeir grandchildren in their 40s-60s,, and their great-grandchildren in their 70s and above.

Hi Hanna. I like my women educated and intelligent. Within reason, age is irrelevant, but as a man of 76 years, I find that once women reach their 50's they have a tendency to start losing interest in things that don't involve their families. Specifically, their children and grandchildren. They also tend to look for partners who are prepared to sit and watch Soap Operas with them, instead of going out and enjoying their lives. Women who have lost their original partners through death or divorce, also tend to avoid men; especially older men... as evident by the graph. Many older women won't look at a man who is over the age of 55. Why? Men who seek younger women, are men who still feel young at heart and don't want to settle for Cocoa and Slippers, in front of the TV. A younger woman also gains worldly experience from a relationship with an older man, especially if she's not in a hurry to settle down, get married and have kids. I talk from personal experience. A friend and I are both Autistic, with high IQ's and frequently discuss the women on TV we'd like to have a relationship with. That includes you and Alice Roberts. In particular, we both like your saucy innuendoes and wicked twinkle in your eye. You even make this item very saucy. Shame you're a happily married woman, as I'd like to spend some time with you. Sigh! Hey Ho! P.S. No, I've never married, as I had no inclination to be a father... which is what usually killed my relationships, as I am unable to supply the emotional security they demand; however, that doesn't stop me enjoying the brief relationships I have with younger women, many of whom are University students and Graduates. At my age, platonic relationships - or limited intimacy - are acceptable, as I have nothing to prove in the bedroom. i.e. I know I'm a man. Onwards and UPwards! Russ. Hampshire.

It's not that we're pervs, Hannah. It's that people don't take care of themselves and by the time they hit 35 most women (in the US, at least) tend to have let themselves go. Most, but not all, obviously. There are some seriously beautiful 35+ year old women out there. A beautiful woman with some life experience is obviously more attractive than a 20-year-old.

I wonder how much identity, perceived social pressures, and experience plays into this. And I wonder how much of this is people ignoring the pursuit of a meaningful relationship in favour of keeping up some kind of appearance.

I think the key is how the question is asked. To me people are generally speaking more attractive looking at 20 than at 50 but that doesn't mean that I would want to have a 20 year old partner if I was 50.
