    Some of these comments are hilariously ironic. Criticizing him for something you are doing. He never said she wasn't doing it, couldn't do it, or any of that. What he is saying in the beginning is correct. He points out her talent and that editing the audio in that way wasn't necessary and took away from the live feel of the performance and her talent to begin with. You don't put someone in the same sentence as Phil Collins and Don Henley and it be a negative critique. He quite literally says, "I'm not saying she is lip singing". So before you criticize someone for not knowing what they are talking about or to do research how about actually finishing the video first, number one, and two, understand what he is actually saying. Practice what you preach kids.

    5,800 feet is the difference between the first and second video. First video is in Monterrey, Mexico at an elevation of 1,500 feet which is where they live. It was also recorded almost a year later. The second video is at 7,300 feet above sea level, the altitud of Mexico City where that second video was shot at. Pau still kills her vocals and drumming 90 minutes into this performance at this altitude. How? She practices singing while exercising. That plus her being an alien. 😜

    I was a hard rock drummer in my 20s. One of our guitar players sang lead in the first half of the set. Then I sang the 2nd half of our set while playing drums. And we played Boston, Foreigner, Def Leppard, and R.E.O. Speedwagon, just to name a few. So, I'm living proof that it can be done. And I've seen others do it as well.

    My calm suggestion to you is to watch an interview that Fil from Wings of Pegasus did with THE WARNING! He explained it first, then they answered every question about the back track (which, as he put it, not every good band knows how to use), the click usage, and whatever more you might be "upset", "angry", disappointed about. All that wasted emotion! For what! This band of sisters aren't hiding anything, aren't misrepresenting anything, they're just being themselves! You might watch some of the other reactors that give them kudos on their "advanced" stage setups, concert and/or in their "cave" setting! Chill!

    Edited: after reviewing the official video from TW site (that is the full concert) and compared with the fan uploaded version of just this song I say they are the same. I am quite sure the audio is the live version but it is mixed out to sound similar to the album version. The Warning had full control of their QOTMS album... and they also had full say themselves on the concert video... they did not have a record label at that time. Only funds from Kickstarter and Patreon. They have never been anything else than true to their craft... well,. the Dust to Dust from Foro Didi is their own recording, they released it themselves... same with the album but as you know they are using backtracks even live but I agree that it sound more polished vs the Lunario version... maybe over-produced audio but I’m quite sure it is audio uptake from the concert...

      @@OldSkuleNerd you so did... power trio they are. I had just not paid attention to the audio quality of Foro Didi before. Many prefer the Foro Didi version but I am for the Lunario one and I had not paid attention to why before now, I’ve always said it because it was then first time playing QOTMS in its full live but as I see your view now I tend to agree with you about the audio. Hey in all this discussion about sound... did you get that Dust to Dust is a prologue to the story that is in 13 songs following a character who is going from obsession, frustration, madness to the end in her search for the unreturned love she has for her victim? Quite strong concept album... the guy talking is Rudy, their manager, giving a sermon at the funeral of the character and this song is in the story the last in timeline though first on the album... they released the album in four chapters with this song first and thereafter 3 songs each with about two weeks in between in preparation for the Lunario concert... telling you that this was quite a way to launch an album

  • @XavierXerxes
    @XavierXerxes 3 года назад +3

    I see where you're coming from and you're not wrong. The vocal in the Foro DiDi concert was certainly processed and there is definitely a backing track of the vocal in the chorus that is fairly high in the mix (& other backing tracks too). I do think the main vocal is authentic and fundamentally a really good vocal performance for Pau on this song. There are some a few telltale "flaws" that make me conclude it's authentic: She "pops" the mic with both letter "p" sounds in the word "prepared" in the second line of the song, and she "pops" the mic again while exhaling during the second time she sings the chorus (specifically the word "dust") solo after the bridge. The type of mic she's using in the environment she's using it in would need at a minimum compression/limiting, de-esser, a low pass filter to roll off the bleed from the cymbals and hi-hat, and a high pass filter to roll off the bleed from toms and kick drums. The bleed from the snare would probably need to be reduced with a gated filter in post production, but all of the rest of the basic effects were almost certainly done in real time AND in BOTH videos (both videos also have audio from the board and were likely remixed in post-production). One really can't get away from using effects/processing in this environment with this equipment, so it's really a matter of personal preference when it comes to how much effects/processing is too much. I would have liked the backing track for the chorus to be lower in the mix in the Foro DiDi concert, but to me the fundamental vocal performance has enough features of authenticity that I can thoroughly enjoy this particularly good vocal performance in this song. That being said, I can see why some people like the Lunario CDMX video better and it is the one that went viral. The Lunario CDMX performance is probably closer to how Pau will sound at a typical show (based on the videos of other concerts posted by audience members) and lots of people like her raspy tone that is so prominent in the CDMX performance. I will continue to be in awe of Pau's Foro DiDi vocal/drum performance in Dust To Dust as I see it as her being in top form. Glad you were honest and I appreciate what you do. Your criticism was fair and reasonable and lots of us really could benefit by being more open to such criticism.

    You obviously were new to TW and Pau, in minute 5:35 you said that’s not possible, @ 9: 57 you said “ who the hell are the other three people singing” it was a duet between Pau & Dani. 11:02 you said Daniela the middle sister (drummer) which I suppose you meant Pau wasn’t singing. Well it wasn’t her part to sing! 14:43 she sounds different because is Mexico City 7,280 feet and she was 16 years old. That might be why she’s winded. The point is there are videos with production, raw live videos, and music videos…just enjoy the music in whatever form as long as it comes from great artists! The second video is from the Lunario in Mexico City -- altitude 7350 ft. Try drumming and singing at that altitude. In this video the girls are only 18, 16 and 13! The click track helps with timing while adding a few elements like piano (played by Pau the drummer). Dany, the guitarist is the primary singer but Pau sings a few songs. This performance was the debut of the entirety of their second album and was performed with enormous energy and passion, but yes they struggled with the altitude at times. The first video was recently released and I was as puzzled as you. Why do this when the originals at Lunario, Foro Didi, and the Whiskey are far better? The 2017 TEDx is my favorite performance done when they were 16, 14, and 12. Thanks for the reaction/analysis.

    En realidad los "en vivo" (live) los hacen con un track de acompañamiento que esta sincronizado con el vídeo que se muestra en las pantallas de fondo. Ese track tiene grabados algunos instrumentos que no podrían tocarse en vivo, como violines u otras riff de guitarra, y algunas voces de coros. Si miras el vídeo del concierto completo te vas a dar cuenta que Pau, antes de que comience una canción da un golpe con su baqueta a un dispositivo que tiene a un lado de su HitHat, ese golpe activa el clip de vídeo de la canción que van a tocar. En una entrevista o mini-documental de su canal de RUclips ha mencionado que a veces en los conciertos Danny le pide que toquen canciones que no está en su Playlist y las tocan. Eso no quiere decir que NO toquen ni canten en vivo, yo he estado en sus conciertos y en ocasiones se notan desafinaciones, respiraciones entrecortadas o que las notas que cantan son mas cortas. Incluso en ese vídeo del concierto completo en el LUNARIO o en el DiDi, también he notado que desafinan o que cortan algunas notas de la canción. Esta canción que tu estas analizando, Dust To Dust, es la con la que abren el concierto, es decir, es la primera, por lo tanto no se notan esas respiraciones o desafinaciones, si ves ves otra canción mas adelante lo verás. Hay otro youtuber, no recuerdo su nombre, que hizo una reacción a una de las canciones de sus conciertos y también noto que en una de las canciones había una 2da guitarra grabada y comento que era algo que muchos músicos hacían en los conciertos

    • @OldSkuleNerd

      Entiendo lo que estás diciendo, pero mi crítica no tuvo nada que ver si usaron o no una pista de acompañamiento para instrumentos o voces de respaldo ... mi problema fue que en este video no usaron la voz principal de Paulina, que por definición cuando use una pista en la voz principal que sea sincronización de labios ... PERO ella tampoco hizo eso, creo que sí la cantó en vivo y la gente en la actuación la escuchó en vivo ... Siento que la pista se colocó después para el video ..... que es una pena porque cuando ella está viva e imperfecta se puede sentir más su pasión y energía.
      por favor no digas que esta única reacción es mi final, todo sea opinión de esta banda ... He reaccionado a numerosas presentaciones verdaderamente en vivo donde la voz principal de Paulina era cruda y maravillosa y ¡¡AMO ESTA BANDA !!

    Yes they use backing tracks, so does every other rock band in history. Obviously none of the girls sound like a middle aged preacher man. Their is fan shot video and other recordings that show Paulina singing and drumming without issue. She has been working on that for years. I do believe you are right about the audio overlay and that is unfortunate, as it give the naysayers ammo. OH FYI This was not shot for a DVD, it was released as a Patreon reward then to RUclips. All of their content prior to Sept 2020 was all fan funded and independently produced by the band. Aug., 2020 they had signed their first recording contract with Lava Records.
    It was cool to point out your suspicions but to keep harping on got kinda tiring...

    I am having a little trouble fully buying what you are selling. What record label has messed with this video? Please be specific as this performance was by unsigned artists in November of 2018 (yes now they have been signed to Lava Records but that is a July 2020 event). So let's make this clear, you are asserting the band over-dub the video, right? Did you find the altered video on The Warning RUclips channel or a channel of a 3rd party? The link in your notes appears to be a 3rd party hence might this have been altered by this 3rd-party (that was neither the band or a Record label)? BTW, where is this concert available as a commercial DVD, as you also assert? [it is not]. So while your observations may be accurate, the narrative you have built around them appears not to be.

    I don't know where you guys dissing this reaction are missing the 10 times he called them Amazing, Great, best trio out there ATM, with a great live sound. He just dislikes the production companies trying to justify their jobs by screwing with a live performance's sound and trying to pass it off as "Live" when it's not.
    It's the production company that apparently doesn't like The Warnings live music sound if they go and start to screw with the audio. Go down vote the production company not the messenger OldSkuleNerd for pointing it out lol. They don't trust you the listener to enjoy their live sound, so they screw with it thinking they have too to make more money. I agree 100% with OldSkuleNerd. If you say its live. Don't screw with the audio post production.
    If it was a backing track or if they were lip syncing on stage, it would be fine, artists do it all the time. There is nothing new under the sun and It would still be considered live. We all are smart enough and can tell if they were lip syncing. That's not what happened here. It's very obvious that the Audio to this "LIVE" performance was altered in post production and its a shame and is degrading to the artists. That's all OldskuleNerd was pointing out wasn't even putting this band down in the slightest, just chastising the production company for ruining a perfectly good live performance.

    Appreciate your review, you are obviously an experienced and observant viewer. I suspect the first version was a back track and not post production editing since up to very recently, they have largely been a crowd-funded, basement (as opposed to a garage) band. I’m glad you found the second version, which is the one other reviewers usually see first.
    “Survive” is a popular song from their TEDx performance (and 1st album) and features Pau and Dani going back and forth on lead vocal. I’m afraid and sorry you’re going to get some flack from a few of the Warning Army who don’t like to hear anything negative about the band. I think you made it pretty clear you recognize their talent and are a new fan, so please don’t let them put you off further reviews.

    Pau has a laptop to her left for supplemental tracks when they need an extra guitar, some keyboards or vocals, so no post-production there, she has pedal that she can push to trigger the tracks, by the way they do that themselves in Ableton. As they were not signed when Foro Didi happened, with the little money they had, I find it hard to believe they had the means to do a lot of post-production to the level you suspect. Also to be noted that the 2nd performance at Lunario was in Mexico City at a mile and a half of altitude, so she was probably having difficulty with her breath control, so that could explain the differences in her voice. I would really like to hear their side of the story. I just wish that before making claims like you just did, you had much more solid proof, especially since you were clearly missing lots of context, which does not mean you are 100% wrong, but it sure does not help your case.

    Having taken a look at a few of their live videos done before 2020 compared to fan videos it's clear that you are correct. However it's easy to confuse what's on the backing track and post production. On one Argentinian concert performance of Narcissista, Pau missed the opening line but it reappeared on their live video with the same sound as Foro Didi and the studio recording. I noticed that even a misfretted chord by Dani was corrected on the Foro Didi concert although her solos don't seem to be. Since the Whisky concert in Jan 2020 they have taken a new approach to the live audio and don't do this anymore. Possibly they changed the technicians because they clearly don't do it themselves. I'm not sure but I seem to remember them saying somewhere that they had a problem with the mic Pau was using. It was difficult to get a good sound out of it with popping etc and so they felt editing her vocals was often unavoidable. In one concert the filter even fell off.

    You were only marginally correct in your comments on the first version of Dust to Dust (Foro Didi). You mention 'backing track' a couple times. And yes, there is a backing track which Pau, the drummer (and lead singer here), triggers during their live shows. We fans know the backing track to this song includes additional guitar work to fill in the sound, and the voice of Rudy, their manager, giving a bit of a sermon in Spanish (and perhaps a doubling of Pau's voice on the chorus).
    But you did also remark incorrectly on a couple things:
    a) in the pre-chorus, where you thought the lead vocalist (Pau) was singing again (but with her lips not moving), no, that was Dany's voice; indeed in the pre-chorus we have Ale and Dany singing the backups, both singing on the tonic note in line 1, then Dany's voice shifting up to the 5th for line 2. (That is how they always do it; it gives Pau a breather until she comes back in on the chorus with: 'Hey, where are you going...'.);
    b) earlier on, you said Pau would not be able to sing with such control of her voice while drumming. You're incorrect on that too. Pau can and does sing well while drumming. Too many of us fans have seen her do it live (plus there are 20 or so fancam videos of live performances online). Pau being more adept at this than most typical singing drummers is due to her training regimen, which includes her habit of practicing singing while running on a treadmill.
    I'll now point out something which you'll want to avoid from now on, so as to not tick off TWArmy members like myself. After making your incorrect comments, you snarkily said 'I'm done with that,' and cut the song short. Nobody keeps my respect by treating DPA so disrespectfully.
    That's why I'm done with you, and am cutting your reaction off right now / (without subbing).

    Wandering through the reactions to them, as I am wont to do, while impatiently awaiting their next batch of music to come out - you're absolutely correct. The first one is over-dubbed. I believe it's actually from a TV show (showcasing "live concerts"), and it's likely the video producers are the ones who decided they'd rather post the vid with "studio recordings" over it. Especially since at the time, they were still fully independent, so it certainly wasn't a record company pushing this stuff.
    Nevertheless, one of the most interesting things I have found about this band is their *precision* . They tend to carefully craft their songs to take things such as Pau's breathing into account in the mixup of "who does what when". They do use backing recordings (performed by themselves generally, except in rare occasions like Rudy's "Salvation" speech in this one), which Pau also controls. But it's sparingly - so they can keep the "live" sound as close to the "studio" sound as possible. That, in and of itself, is vanishingly rare these days.
    Excellent review!! :-)

      Only thing that I do not get is that everyone is upset that there is post production for The Warning and that it is called out. Yet, some of the most popular "live sessions" out there, such as Jinjer -- Pisces, Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars, and many many more use tons of post-production (actually post-production is the norm for "live" nowadays) and I see no one calling them out. I would agree with you, but feel there is a double standard when it comes to calling this band out and not doing the same for others.

      @@_JD..JD_ this one is painfully obvious especially when you’ve been a drummer for 25 years. Just happened to have an opinion on a video i saw but i agree that other bands should be called out as well. If you want to play live music that comes with real singing in my opinion

      @@denforcer8874 Thank you for the clarification. I actually like The Warning because it is in your face rock with all its imperfections. In that sense, they are so good live naturally, that less post-production will always be valued-added for them.

    There's other videos dubbed like this. Two different videos of "The End", same performance, one obviously live from show, other dubbed. And you're right, she doesn't need it. I'd rather hear her breathing hard and not sounding perfect, shows how hard that actually is

    After comparing the ForoDidi version you played compared with a couple of fan-made videos, I do agree that the audio on your video sounds much more like the studio audio. I’m not sure exactly what was done, but I agree that it takes away from the live performance. It’s better in the fan-made videos to hear all of the crowd noise and singing along as well. Lunario however isn’t the best way to hear Pau live, the altitude did sap her energy and her voice is better in 2020. Check out the Whisky a Go-Go 2020 version to see what I mean - better singing but it is clearly live audio because you can hear extra emphasis in her voice. That show really shows off her skills. As others have mentioned there was no DVD or commercial release involved here, so there was no money motive in whatever was done with the audio.
