In today’s video I dive in and take a look to see if High Moon Studios' Darkwatch is still good. Enjoy!
This game on PCSX2 with widescreen, 60 FPS, HD textures, and a mouse injector is quite an experience outside of originally playing it on Xbox hardware as a kid. Can't wait to see how the game shapes up when Xemu gets more stability and features.
This is not a review this is just describing the game from start to finish. A summary of the whole game
The spoiler warning at the 9 minute mark after discussing crucial plot points was too cute to not point.
I agree entirely on the sharp increase in difficulty from the half-way point to the end; in Deadeye, enemy health pools were so absurd I resorted to running past non-forced encounters at every chance. The final boss fight was a grooling hour long hell of avoiding one-hit kills while barely chipping at the boss ' health.
This game is absolutely a fun hidden gem ! I got the Xbox version one and yeah, this game just remind me of Blood 1997.This game is absolutely a fun hidden gem ! I got the Xbox version one and yup, this game just remind me of Blood 1997. Protagonist look familiar with Caleb(Blood protagonist) too !!
I suspect in 10 years this will be on every "Hidden Gem" video on the Tubes...
the more I game the more I realized old games(good ones) are better than the best games we have today. Simply by the fact that there was no dlc, microtransaction, lootboxes etc. Developers AND publishers had to make games without all those things hanging above them. That is how we got amazing games like MGS1, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, first part N64 games, Panzer Dragoon, Halo 1, Turok, KOTOR, Morrowind, GTA3. after 2008 it started to go down and once 2013 hit the party was all over.
Darkwatch will never be bad even with the minor problems it has. It is a full game with no hidden schemes to get extra dollars from your wallet.
I bet if you came back you’d get more recognition and views.
Really REALLY well done!
I finally got this game and it is awesome!!!
Indeed!
@@implantgames also i really love your reviews and your awesome
Thanks mate!
@@implantgames I have a request if it's okay can you review the timesplitters games timesplitters (PS2) timesplitters 2 (PS2 GCN XBOX) and timesplitters future perfect (PS2 GCN XBOX) timesplitters is my all time favorite series when it comes to first person shooters
i played darkwatch on ps2 11 years ago and i loved it if only they could make a darkwatch 2 2017
The world needs to more steam punk vampire westerns!
@implant
Actually, I've heard the devs wanted the sequel to take place during another time period.
"Darkwatch was supposed to be first of a series of games that would be set in different time periods, including Ancient Rome, the Crusades era and World War II. O'Connor said they wanted "to tell not only the story of Jericho Cross but of the Darkwatch as an organization, from its origins in Roman times to its ultimate fate in Earth’s future."
So essentially they would've stolen the thunder of Assassin's Creed before that was even a thing. :P
Nathan you are write darkwatch is so good
Nathan, Darkwatch 2 got sadly cancelled ;C (RIP my childhood)
Oh I wish
Now that I have finally finished this game, I can say...
I enjoyed this Halo clone more than the actual Halo games. :P
It certainly has less boring sections and less backtracking :)
you both crazy to think this better then halo.
@@mjxbox The didn't say it was better, they said they enjoyed it more.
think about what you just said and how much it didn't make any sense . lol
@@mjxbox You know when games critics make a Top 5 or Top 10 list of games, and they sometimes have to tell people, "I'm not saying these are the best games, I'm just saying these ones are just my favorites."
The soundtrack was also very good as well.
Yes it is. Anyone who says otherwise sucks
Great mention Kris. Dark Watch was a game I picked up much later and was impressed with. I wanted to find any connection or threads between it and the Transformers War for Cybertron game. DW is mostly a great coat of paint on the fps genre, but it is a worthwhile story that reminds me of the movie Priest. I wish I would have beat it, but with so many games, I get far enough to know "that's a game I will come back to" and mosey off to another genre. FPS are harder for me to stick with. Great review and very pertinent reminder of High Moon. Don't let good developers go unnoticed.
Yeah, I was never very good at finishing games. Don't have a choice now! I actually had to replay the Lazarus fight through the end of the game twice as I accidentally deleted the recorded footage... Still, glad to scratch this one off the list.
your videos are a credit to you and your fantastic ability to convey how great games are. i would enjoy seeing that process once.
This was one of my fav. games on the Xbox (next to Hunter:The reckoning) Absolutely loved the atmosphere and story! Great video!
Thanks! I do own Hunter: The Reckoning, I'll have to check it out.
LOL "A badass vampire, not a sparkly one!" xD
I never played this game, but it looks really good actually.
Wonder how many will get the reference haha :)
Thinking about buying this game from amazon
One of my favorites from this generation. Probably wishful thinking, but I hope High Moon gives us a sequel. With them not working on Transformers anymore...maybe???? Oh and we need a new Timesplitters too. Heck, just give me a remastered game with Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect. Great video as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
I always loved the weapon designs in Darkwatch. The Gotchic Steampunk design for every weapon always looked awesome to me.
Every time someone leaves a comment on this video it makes me want to go back and play it again :) Such a stylish game!
will this comment make you go over the edge and finally go back to play again?
This my be an old vid but Checkout the upcoming game for PC called witchfire!
Tim Burton's Painkiller
I played "Dark Watch" on Xbox almost 8 years ago. A great experience!!!
Fire it up, it still is!
arzak1 same dude this game is a fucking legend
We need a remastered version of this
This needs to be remade and released on PC. I wish that would happen.
A good alternative for The Order 1886 - a game with a historical setting and supernatural enemies.
The only thing I don't like is that you have to hold LS down for crouching. Having to press down an analogue stick and move it in a direction at the same time always feels wrong to me. Like I'm breaking the stick, y'know? I always switch to "toggle crouch" in such games. But Darkwatch doesn't let me to do that.
I really hope crouching doesn't need to be used after the first train level.
I haven't played Darkwatch since this video, but any game that strays away from Halo controls always feels weird to me haha :D
Missed this, going to have track it down. Thanks for the awesome review.
My pleasure.
Totally agree. It's still one of my favourites on the OG XBOX.
It's definitely near the top of my list :)
Wow, this game looks great. Gotta find a copy one day. I hope they rerelease it on modern consoles and pc too. Great video!
we didn't have a ps2 for a short period of time so i sold my first copy and bought a new one a couple years ago. there aren't any written button codes but there is 1 way to cheat in the game
what is the framerate on the ps2?
I must have played this 20 times. This is my second favorite game of all time, only being beaten by oddworld by a hair.
this game needs a remake!!!
I do NOT like westerns OR FPS as a rule, but I absolutely LOVED THIS GAME! I played it on Xbox and now! Glad you agree it still rocks! Thanks for this.
I played this years ago as a little kid and it was honestly one of the most fun games that I ever play
Its a real bummer that it wont likely get a sequel
Beat this a few years back. So glad I'm not alone in having to lower the difficulty. I got to the last boss on normal but ended up switching to easy to beat her. Something that's always irked me a bit until now.
All in all a good old school shooter though a little bit frantic for my taste near the end, I'm more of a methodical player like yourself. I'll always remember those Keggers.
No shame in bumping the difficulty down haha, especially when you're on a deadline :D
Awesome review! You have such a special voice, I would compare it to Mark Bussler from Classic Game Room! Saddle up boys, you want to live forever? Keep it coming friendo XD
And yes, the game is great! and yes, it turns out to be really hard when you get to the part where you can choose the levels..
Haha, thanks man!
I bought it for the atmosphere, I stayed for the gameplay. 10/10 from me
I'm pretty sure I played a demo of this years ago that came with one of the Xbox magazines, and I remember liking it. I think I'll have to track this one down! Great review! :)
Thanks, and yes, definitely snatch it while you can. I have a feeling these late 2005-2006 games will slowly creep up in price in the years to come.
Is this a review or a retelling of the story in the game?
If you have a modded OG Xbox you can apply a 480p Patch to this game.
Both of my Xbox's are modded but I have yet to play around with the 480p and Widescreen patches. Got a link to a good resource?
Here is a link to DLC & Patches
digiex.net/downloads/download-center-2-0/consoles-homebrew/675-xbox-offline-xbox-live-downloadable-content-dlc-installers-downloads.html
Here is a link to the game I already patched a few months ago, btw you can find a lot of good stuff here if you never heard of it, www.theisozone.com/downloads/xbox/xbox-isos/darkwatch-ntsc-u-480p/
Does the framerate suffer in any way with progressive scan enabled?
I didn't notice any slow down in the game, worked perfect
Personally, I find it amazing how fresh and unique shooters like this does not get the credit it deserves. Back in the day, I found this game simply amazing fun and would love either a remaster or new game released...cheers.
don't know how iv never heard of this game but it looks great, definitely going to look into getting it for ps2. looks like a mix of van helsing, halo and serious sam.
Not gunna lie, this game gave me the creeps when i first played the demo. It reminded me of that Tails from the Crypt movie with Billy Zane. Those glowing eyes.... =(
Just one glowing eye :D
For a Horror Wester fps, I prefer Blood, it's a better game in every way.
Though Darkwatch is worth at least one playtrough.
Never heard of Blood, thanks for bringing it to my attention!
implantgames
It's one of my favorite FPS games ever, and I've played hundreds.
Is this on ps4
Wow, how did this game fly under my radar?! Looks awesome! I find it difficult to play FPSs with the PS2 controller, but I can give it a shot.
The main character's name is Jericho? Cool, I know a guy named Jericho, hehe :-)
Sooner or later I'll have your entire screen name figured out :) I also find it difficult to play FPS with the Dual Shock controller. They really should have moved the left stick up...
MY store has 2 copies for xbox for 6 bucks each...need to pick it up !
Indeed!
i like this game.
great vid. nicely done.
Thanks man!
Hi
Hello.
Great video, so glad to see enough people are still playing this great little game to the point that fairly high profile reviewers are still making content about it like this. Thanks for keeping the game some definition of alive, maybe we'll someday get another one of those many other games they planned, each in a different era, which I would be ALL OVER. What's the closest thing the AAA franchises can boast as an anthology series? Assassin's Creed KIND OF?
Anyway, if I may provide some constructive critcism...do you employ any specific recording/editing style here? I cant help but feel like your sentences were riddled with unnatural tonal shifts (i.e. automated phone voice "press 1 to X" ) which I can only assume is indicative of the audio being chopped up and re-edited? Something to consider making a little more coherent and, well, natural sounding.
Great stuff regardless. I also see you do a lot of revisit videos like this for many other late-era PS2 games, which were a big part of my gaming life. Looking forward to watching them, you've earned yourself a sub :D
Glad you enjoy the video and thanks for the feedback. I'm certainly not a gifted narrator by any stretch, but hopefully I get a little better with each video.
Yes it is indeed still good, I’m currently playing through it as we speak.
For whatever reason, this one was never on my radar. I picked it up the other day and I have to agree, it is excellent. I'm keeping an eye out for Van Helsing too. Thanks for posting and giving me a few reasons to dust off my original Xbox.
Bro Great video keep it up
now I know I am in the minority, but I would love to see you do "Is Iron Phoenix a bad game?" episode.
Is Iron Phoenix underrated?
It's always been somewhat down-trodden.
OMG this game! i had it on my xbox i must of played it goodness knows how many times. i medically need a Darkwatch 2 or i may die
It's a shame there was never a sequel :(
for real :( i just picked it up randomly one day and thought "hey, this looks ok" and it turned it to be amazing! ahh well, we can hope for a sequel :)
now i need to go track this down. im going to share this to an xbox group im in.
You definitely should, terrific game :) 10 years from now... hidden gem haha!
Still so cool
one of my favorite games...
i didnt think darkwatch was ever good.
the advert looked awesome and the design blew my mind but i thought it was just a really bland gothic themed halo
thanx for spoilng the whole game
i....love....this.....game
It's a lovable game
MegaHellrasier, Who doesn't? :D
Just finished it for the first time on PS2. Nothing special, but a solid 7/10 game, worth a playthrough. Had some great franchise potential, sad. Features a really unique setting and atmosphere, and while the inspiration is clear, doesn't feel like a Halo copy (not necessarily a good thing though, as it's not quite as good as Halo 1-3).
Thanks for the spoiler warning... I wanted to watch this review before I bought the game and 3 minutes in you reveal that Cassidy is murdered. 😒 Had to stop watching there so you wouldnt ruin anymore of the story for me.
If only they released 'The Grinder'! Wii Game! -___-
I didn't like this game but I didn't play through much of it.
It's worth a play through in my opinion. Good action, great sound, and a cool atmosphere.
Yes, yes, yes!
if dark watch was so good why did they canceled dark watch 2
