I love the wolf mini, especially since one of the bonus pulse quests gave the barbarian his own wolf ally, that can now have a proper mini representing her.
50% agree, 50% disagree. The sculpts, boards and general production values are exceptional. But AH have a MASSIVE problem with not playtesting things, not checking community errata and basically not giving any evidence they actually play their own games. Frozen Horror retained literally every one of the problems with the rules that we've known about for more than thirty years now! Sure they botched together an errata document afterwards, but it never made it to print in the box, so there are people out there who are still playing a broken product, because lets face it, a lot of people don't go looking online for errata until after they discover the game is borked, and that leaves a bad taste in their mouths. You would think the damage was done and the lesson would be learned, but no, there are still fundamental problems with this pack too, like the fact they retained the screwed up wording on mind lock, which, again, has been a known fault for more than thirty years! One word, literally adding one word to the cards would fix it. But they didn't because AH have an utterly quixotic desire to be 'authentic' to the game system when it comes to printing the rules in a broken and un-erratad state.
Have to agree. Wished they'd kept the brutality of the motm ogres but, it was clear they saw it as more of a slog to get through, proving playtesting and attention to community is a priority on their list!

On sale 5 March at Hasbro US and Amazon US. Not sold Amazon Canada. I think Druids are Gnomes or Halflings. They look the most like Larry Elmore art of Kenders from Dragonlance.
I love the new Avalon Hill edition of this game (lost my old game in a move years ago sadly), and this video convinced me to get the Ogre Horde expansion as my first expansion for it. The ogres look so funny and cute, the skeleton archers look awesome, and it's lovely that we get a new class added to the game as well! My box is on its way as we speak! I'm hyped!
Thank you for this look at Against the Ogre Horde. I don't have my copy yet, but should sometime soon-ish. I haven't been able to find an official errata document for The Frozen Horror expansion, do you have a link for it? The Hasbro Pulse website isn't great for finding these Heroquest extras. So excited that they came out with this expansion. So happy to finally have it. Always have wanted it. Love what Avalon hill has been doing with hero quest. Great unboxing video. Love your channel.
Nice video. It seems to me that the production quality of product has increased a good bit as the expansions have rolled out. Especially since the release of the crowd-funded production.
First, regarding the Druid sculpts - to me, they strike me as Gnomes. The male especially, with the facial hair - gnomes usually have the weird 1800 style mustaches, while halflings had 1800 style beards/mutton chops. Gnomes are often more stocky, like a dwarf, where halflings are more lithe. The second reason why I feel this way is because of the Bard. It always struck me as odd - why make the bard an orc? Why not make another human? Or even an elf? Because when I saw the warlock as a halfling, it hit me - Avalon Hill is owned by Hasbro, who also owns WotC, who bought up TSR, makers of Dungeons and Dragons. They (in my opinion) are doing a little cheeky nod to D&D. This is the game that got my OG group into playing AD&D 2E. So, Human Barbarian, Dwarf Fighter, Halfling Warlock, Orc Bard, Gnome Druid, Human Wizard, and Elf Rogue (I'm also aware of the base game Elf, which I see as the anomaly). You throw in the Human Knight/Paladin, and the Human Monk, and the only thing we're missing is a Ranger. Again, this is all just speculation and my own opinions, but the more I thought about that Orc Bard, the more it really bothered me. It wasn't until I saw the new druids and said, "Those are gnomes". Okay....the tiles look amazing, and the redone sculpts are fantastic and I look forward to painting! I wonder how many will do the wolf as Snowdasher? Tempting as that is, I'm not sure how I'll paint mine up when I get it. Looking forward to painting that throne and the Ogre Lord especially. I don't know if this has been asked or not, but do any of the tiles line up to be used as a tile for the Arena for Prophecy of Telor (Quest 10) that makes use of such an arena? In any case, I look forward to introducing a new group of players to this game, and relive the fun I had back then. What makes it even better is that we only had the base game back then. I easily snatched up all the expansions thus far and look forward to when this hits my door!
It’s funny, a year ago I designed for myself a ‘battle mode’ in heroquest, much like duel mode in Golden Axe, where you pick a Hero and battle through levels of monsters, upping in difficulty and quantity, until you win.. or die! And now AH made arena mode! I don’t know who I’m more impressed with 😂 obviously great vid Ash!
I was correct that they will add new titles months ago, as well as a plastic throne! Now for a new updated game board next! As always, great video and unboxing!
10 body point ogres would be way too strong, they were unbalanced in the original elf quest expansion and my group always houseruled four hit points anyway
HI Ash I just got my copy from Amazon UK and it's great I now have 8 expansions and 2 hero collections plus the main game i hope they bring out more quest packs
well done Ash! I didn't have a replica of the classic box to discuss (thought about ordering it from Etsy, but the flimsy build quality stopped me... I fit the contents instead into my '89 box which had room to spare). It looks cool though (and is shinier than the remake version). can't wait to hear from more Euro gamers on this too! #Spoilers 48:26
This is a tough one to answer. I think it is, and the app has a ton of content on it now. Might be a little while before ATOH makes it on there, but I have every faith that it will. I keep looking for ways to play campaigns solo without the app, but it's tough when that means knowing what's in the quest book.
I do like the axian quest decks but it isn't necessarily used for campaign play. We still need a good solo system that can use the properties of a pre written quest and give us the experience of sitting with a zargon to play it. That said, you can play quests on hquestmaster dot com also!
This pack looks awesome. Can't wait to get it. Also, do you think we will get something like a "Skills Card Pack" for all of the other heroes? I think it would be a great addition and make the game even more fun.
I'd like that. I think it's been requested so much that it has to have been discussed behind closed doors at Avalon Hill. I'm willing to bet the skills wouldn't be a separate product but a part of another expansion...tough to speculate how!
Scratch that, I just thought of how I'd do it if i were AH - i think a dwarf focused expansion pack could include a fighter hero that would have a large selection of skills, maybe 9 or 12, and the player is only allowed to select three -- but players would homebrew letting the Barbarian and dwarf take the other fighter skills in the same party.
I don't understand what the rules are for the generic tournament - I get how to build a hero team but what about a vilain team? Is it a point per 'Attack Dice'? ty
It's technically "as many points as their strongest attack" -- for regular enemies, this will be just their attack dice if they rolled all skulls. Some enemies have dread magic, though, and if their dread magic includes a spell that could attack with more attack dice, then this would be their rating!
I'm calling it right now the core box is going to get a Refresh on the Miniatures I don't think the furniture will but I think the Miniatures are definitely going to get re sculpted they are lacking now compared to the new ones. I'm not trying to be mean but the new models the Goblins, Orcs And skeletons that come in against the ogre horde blow the core set minis out of the water. Inside of the quest book for the ogre horde there's a black and white picture of the wizard fighting The Dread sorcerer. The wizard has a hood and different clothing it looks cool. maybe I'm wrong but I have a feeling it's going to happen. I would definitely rebuy the box if I had new Miniatures in it and the dark company ;-)

I absolutely love the box art of that old expansion it is very nice but the new one is very good too out of all of the new covers of box art I would say the Frozen horror is my favorite but that's just my opinion
Not in contemporary heroquest. In classic, there weren't trolls with any of the expansions. However, in the heroquest "Marvel Winter special" magazine (UK only I believe), a troll and three variants of skaven were specified for use with the game, stats and abilities outlined.
Can someone please help? I love the game. But the heroes have figured out that placing the barbarian at the entrance to the door protects all the other heroes from the monsters within. The monsters then have to attack one by one and get annihilated! How do you prevent this from happening? The challenge is gone! Thanks
There is no rules-as-written way to prevent this old exploit, but there have been a lot of tricks to keeping the game going. Making some monsters ranged, such as giving orcs crossbows, Or able to attack diagonally as if equipped with spears, such as skeletons, Or giving the monster the ability to move, attack and then move again, such as the goblins, ...incentivizes the heroes to exterminate a given problem monster immediately. Placing a second door next to an existing door and opening it at the same time (the "double door"). There are other ways as well.
@@AshQuestThank you Ash. The problem is that we use the App as Zargon. This means we can’t employ the techniques you’ve suggested. But maybe we can just ban ourselves from using this door blocking technique by penalising the dice rolls etc
I really think that after the jungle of delthrak, avalon hill should think about doing a spin on the "advanced HQ" idea. Tidy up all the game mechanics introduced in the expansions and put them all in one neatly organized booklet. Create a modular version of the board(parts of the board) that can be laid out piece by piece and obviously is compatible with all the tiles of the previous releases. Put in the 4 alt gender heroes. Put in 1 male and female version of each previously released monster that are obviously more oppulently decked out in armor and weaponry. Boss sculpts, if you will. Then put in a questbooklet with 10 quests that starts by explaining on how to use the modular board. Id be willing to pay for that. On second thought, i still would love a dwarven themed redo of the base game
On the new boxart, the ogers look more like cartoonish wow orks. I love the 80s art style since I first saw it, wish there would be oger figures in that 80 boxart style, overall the new heroquest is not my cup of tea.
I've been building my oldhammer collection with classic heroquest proxies. I'm not quite able to replace cultists, assassins and magus knights, but I'm sure I can find decent enough replacements when I am ready.
@@AshQuest That explanation is so out of left field that I'll let it count. Discovered your channel yesterday after being out of HQ since 2017. I'm one of the psychos from the inn.
It's such a pity that AH don't fix things properly. They kinda halfass everything. On one level they got rid of the variable body points track for the ogres, which is a huge improvement, on the other hand they didn't fix the wording on mind lock*. It's just infuriating that something so obvious gets through the net when they did change the wording on other things! I just can't understand how a company can be so 'maximum effort' on the sculpts and the new mechanics for arena, and so 'minimum effort' on basic errata. *[When mind lock gets cast on the Hero the rules both in the book and on the card instruct both the hero and evil wizard roll their Mind. But only the evil wizards' roll actually matters, the hero's roll is irrelevant, it's not addressed in either the card or book. It's clear that its supposed to reduce the rolled successes of the evil wizard, but the rules don't actually say that. On subsequent turns the Hero rolls Mind to reduce the duration, freeing themselves on a roll of three of more skulls, but on that initial casting the hero's roll plays literally no effect on the resolution of the spell... so why are they rolling at all? All they needed to do was add the word 'net' into the sentence “For each skull scored by the attacker,” and the spell would work as intended. Even a single round of frozen is both really bad for the character, but also really bad for the player, who has to sit around doing nothing. Making it worse, the actual rules for escaping the spell are not only hidden in the book, never referenced on the card, where they should be, but are written in such a way that it makes it very easy for Morcar to victimise low mind point characters (the barbarian can never throw off the spell early) with no way for the Hero's to help each other. In a version of the game where the Hero's are supposed to be much more playing as a team and not adversarially (which was more the UK play style), this is just bad design.] Still, they did get rid of that terrible variable body points track (hated that thing, garbage design), so I can give them at least some credit. It's just weird that they fix some of the problems with the UK edition, and utterly fail to even look at fixing others?
I'd have to agree to disagree on both obviously, but rest assured for each thing changed or not changed, there'd be an equally passionate perspective out there to criticize it. Can't please everyone!
@@AshQuest Agreed. We may not see eye to eye on things, but I've always appreciated how passionate you are about Heroquest and your work to get things out there. I'm just a curmudgeon.

Making some monsters ranged, such as giving orcs crossbows,
Or able to attack diagonally as if equipped with spears, such as skeletons,
Or giving the monster the ability to move, attack and then move again, such as the goblins,
...incentivizes the heroes to exterminate a given problem monster immediately.
Placing a second door next to an existing door and opening it at the same time (the "double door"). There are other ways as well.
Are the heroes having fun?
Awesome!
The old cover art is sooo much better.
Best expansion.
Yeah thanks.....while in Australia nothing....
Fb is just ogre posts....not fomo at all
Punk metal?
They were too against the machine to not be punk, but looked too Metallica to not get that metal subgenre slipped in
@@AshQuest That explanation is so out of left field that I'll let it count.
Discovered your channel yesterday after being out of HQ since 2017.
I'm one of the psychos from the inn.
Are dude ya box corners are all battered
Yeah unfortunately Amazon shipped it to me in a regular non padded bag type of envelope. Really dumb packaging!
consume product
I prefer the old art
In a version of the game where the Hero's are supposed to be much more playing as a team and not adversarially (which was more the UK play style), this is just bad design.]
Still, they did get rid of that terrible variable body points track (hated that thing, garbage design), so I can give them at least some credit.
I'm just a curmudgeon.
that is definitely a quiver
