History of HeroQuest | MB & Games Workshop's Greatest Boardgame?

- How was the board game classic HeroQuest created? And who really designed it? What expansions were released and what ever became of the projects that didn't make it to store shelves? Find out all that and more in this complete history of HeroQuest!
In 1989 MB Games and Games Workshop released HeroQuest and changed the lives of a generation of young gamers, forging lifelong hobbyists and epic memories set in stone. I've traced the history of the game from its first conception as D&D in a box to the global smash it became!
Correction: The Elven Warriors and Archers included in the Elf Quest Pack were in fact enemy models and not allies as I stated in the video.

I am 49 years old this year. When I was a teenager I was at a store looking at all the board games when Heroquest caught eye. The cover art was amazing! I flipped the box over and when I saw the contents I was instantly sold. I took it home and started painting the pieces right away. My friends and I loved the game until the day I got married and gave the painted game with all the expansions to my best friend. Last year Heroquest was reintroduced to the world and now I’m obsessed with painting the new pieces again. I even created two larger game boards and sent one back to my friend in Michigan.
I love Heroquest.
It’s genuinely timeless!
The best thing about Heroquest is that I finally own it!
For those that didn't know this game is towards the top of my "Top 5 for things I missed out on growing up that I intend to rectify before I die list"
I was 4 when it released, so while I knew of it because of the phenomenal commercial (Brode Swoad!) Wasn't able to play until an overnight at a friend's house when I was about 9-10. We played several games and I was blown away. As soon as I got home I told my parents all about it, and did everything in my power to convince them to buy it for me. Long and short was we were poor and there was no budget for it. So I gave up on it and moved on.
Fast forward to my late 20's and a friend of mine tells me all about it. The history, expansions, US versus UK releases, his grail find at a dinky thrift store. All that excitement of my youth comes bubbling up and I start scouring for a copy. Complete copies that hadn't been thrashed were prohibitively expensive, and buying several thrashed copies to cobble together a complete set would still prove quite pricey. While I kept my eyes open, and checked back from time to time on 2nd hand markets, I had accepted that barring a miracle it was just not going to happen.
Then Hasbro announces that they are remaking the game. All new sculpts, updated artwork, the works. But keeping the game mechanics basically untouched. And they are going a quasi Kickstarter to launch it. Meaning I can have a BRAND NEW copy with expansions (that sold for silly amounts of money mind you), plus brand new quests and minis! So my Christmas present from my wife was my pledge for this game.
And now having it in my hand, it was worth the wait. The minis are sharp, artwork stunning, quality components, and there is so much content. I'm sure there are some Heroquest purists that take issue with stylization or some details within the updates. But to them I will say that I am finally getting to embark on an adventure 25 years overdue. So sod off!
The best thing about Heroquest is that I finally own it.
Glad to hear you got your copy!
Some years ago I picked up an original HQ from a charity shop. I donated it to my then 8-year old nephews. Several years later, they now run a D&D campaign. Mission accomplished.
A perfect gaming trajectory!
Ah yes, the best game ever and anyone who says otherwise is wrong!
Well it’s hard to argue with the barbarian’s muscularity!
The best thing about heroquest is the heroquest!
Broudsowd
Overzealous fans like you are the exact reason I've avoided this game for so long.
That, my friend, was a reference to a famous Heroquest video by BardicBroadcasts.@@Kyleology
I got my copy of HeroQuest for £5 from WH Smiths when they mispriced them (was supposed to be a lot more). My mum argued with the manager until he gave in!
The best thing about Heroquest is this video of the History of Heroquest!
You’re too kind!
This is the Lawful Good version of Bardicbroadcast's chaotic evil heroquest review.
Lovely video. I've really been enjoying these deep dives into tabletop history.
Haha, that is very fine company! Really glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Yeah me too, really great channel 👍
This game (and reading the Lotr books) is responsible for my obsession with fantasy and Warhammer. 😊
Ah, such fond memories. Still got it, taped together box and a broken elf sword but all there, after all those years. And now have the re- release ! What a time
I love HeroQuest! My closest friend and I would play every Friday night, he would "DM" and I would play at two characters. HeroQuest got my friends and I into D&D years later.
HQ was the perfect stepping stone to traditional RPGs - a proper gateway!
I play HQ with my 5 year old daughter. She loves it and plays as the mage. She knows all spells by the images! Passing walls, healing, sleep.. :D
That's so sweet. It is really lovely to think that this game which was so influential to so many of us has gone on to be something shared with the next generation as well. Awesome stuff!
Advanced HeroQuest took so much of my young life. I ended up expanding the solo rules in it to the extent I ended up being a TTRPG night of only one member, every night. I blame AHQ for developing into the forever GM I am today after almost 3 decades.
As a kinda game designer myself, I sure know that the look of a game is a lot more important that one would think of. For heroquest, the carbox furnitures, doors, and Citadel Miniature minis were maybe even more important than the rules which are... clumsy. on gameplay, Heroquest is my least favourite among the 3 MB/GW games. Yet I sometime play it again with friends.
Actually the american version may have indeed corrected those gameplay weakness ! gotta look for this version someday ^^
As for my personnal, best thing I recall from HeroQuest is a moment where, one of the characters was struggling with an orc, the dwarf comes in the room, and instead of attacking the orc, decides to search for treasures and happens to find another orc xD
Gremlin also developed a HeroQuest game for the NES, it was finished, but never released. the ROM was found a few years ago and some official repros have come out since.
Oh wow, that’s cool! I’d not seen that - HQ always a few more hidden treasures!
I never played HeroQuest back in the day but I found a copy of the original game in a charity shop a few years ago for £2.50. I wasn't sure it had all the stuff in it to begin with but got it home and it turned out, all there! Played a couple of games with friends to have the experience and whilst other dungeon crawler adventure games do stuff better nowadays (rolling to move...nooooo), there is a neat charm to the game and definitely one that I'll crack out more and more.
£2.50! Absolute bargain! There’s definitely been plenty of innovations and advancements since, but I agree about that old school charm. Plus the nostalgia is strong!
Well, I found a copy of HeroQuest for $4AU at a local charity shop. It was missing a few pieces, but I was able to rectify that problem by getting a more complete set of the game from a local antique and curio shop for $18AU. I combined both contents into a single set, and now I pride myself for having it. I also own copies of Space Crusade and Battle Masters, so I have the complete range of MB/GW games. Lucky!
Fully painted a set of HQ was a great infection vector for a generation and i'm happy to say one i've used to bring the next generation into the worlds of adventuring and beating up monsters to nick their stuff
HeroQuest was my favourite board game as a child.
My collection is small. I have an old busted up box of the game, with extra orcs that I'm working on restoring. From my childhood, I still have the Fellowship of Four Novella, and the Marvel Winter Special comic. I also still have a the 1st edition of the Warhammer Fantasy Role-play rule book, which I got from a charity shop as a kid, thinking it was just a guide to the world of HeroQuest.
I did have the sticker album (incomplete), but unfortunately I don't have that anymore. Also had the Advanced HeroQuest paint set, but not anymore.
Some real treasures there, great work keeping hold of them! I got rid of way too much classic stuff when I was younger, so it’s taken a while to build the collection back up!
My friend has an original GW box set from the 90s and we play every thursday night. We're on the second last quest in the main game.
Amazing, I’m jealous! Sounds like an epic campaign
Loved that game I still remember picking it out for my dad for Christmas. Them not doing the 3 panel board makes sense as they would have need more monsters and furniture in the set.
Good point!
The 'what about meeeeeeee' chaos model always reminded me of Arkon Stormrider from the 1982 Speciality Set 1 - Champions of Chaos
That’s a great shout, I think you’re spot on there!
I still have the Milton Bradley Hero Quest box I bought around 1990 or so when I was in high school. I think there are a couple of miniatures missing that I used while playing D&D and subsequently lost.
The dangers of bundling all that gaming goodness in a backpack and running round to a mate’s house! At least they were lost doing what they were there for, making games great!
I am from Greece and i am 40 years old, my Grandmother gave this to me for Christmas when i was 7 or 8 yo.
She was a simple person that lived all her life as a farmer in a small village of about 1000 people and so she did not know anything about high fantasy and stuff like that and i never talked/hinted or asked from her this game, i did not even know it existed yet i have no idea how she found it and bought it for me and my twin brother in a time where everything with blood and monsters was heavily criticized from the society.
To this day this game still is the best thing anyone has ever gave to me and even though my grandmother passed way i keep this in mint condition to remind me of her and her out of the box thinking.
That’s such a lovely story, what a wonderful gift! It’s so much more than the game in the box isn’t it, really it’s the gift of an entire hobby and passion!
The best thing about HeroQuest is getting videos like this. Wow! What a video. Best one yet.
Space Crusade next please. 👌
Cheers Stevo! Already got you covered - Space Crusade video is live!
ruclips.net/video/gKCPk2yD7L0/видео.html
@@jordansorcery YES!!
Ah yes of course you did! I have already watched it and commented. Lol
42:47 - Brilliance exemplified. Bravo! 🥳
Great video (again)
This was the most potent of gateway drugs - I'm still at it 30 years later!
It hooked me too!
I loved heroquest as a kid. I want the re-release but my goodness is it ever expensive! I feel like my son and I could have a lot of fun with it.
Expensive, and the expansions can add up fast! It looks like they’ve done a lot of good stuff with the update tbf though
I bought Wizards of Morcar with my saved-up pocket money, straight off the shelf in my local Toyworld in New Zealand.
Oh nice! The various sources I consulted had NZ and Australia missing out on some expansions, but from the comments it does seem like that info was wrong - plenty of you managed to score the extra sets!
The good guy was called Magnus and the bad guy, Morcar. I remember getting a chill playing this game as a kid, when I realised their names were an anagram of mine! 😱
That is fun!
Those Hero Quest/Space Crusade White Dwarfs are what introduced me to the wider Warhammer range!
I wish I had kept my copies of the Sticker Album, Comic and Solo Adventure Books that I had, but I got rid of them in the late 90's after my mum had died and I tried to quite the hobby.
Did manage to get the 89 and 90 versions of the base game along with Witchlord/Keller's Keep expansion again in the early 2000's, but sadly, I doubt I'll ever get Ogre Horde or Wizards sets, nor the Dark Company edition....
I loved this game so much I bought it twice and made my own homebrew expansion to it. Its a great game and I really hope one day game makers would realize that there is a market for role playing board game slightly more detailed than HeroQuest, but without all the rules, and class limitations put in D&D and Pathfinder. The choosing, team work, stories and unpredictability is what makes this type of game so wonderful in my opinion.
"And then I noticed that it was a gargoyle. Rolls 4 dice in defence as well as attack!"
Absolute beast!
I've said it a couple of times now but your videos are really well created. Amazing to think you're less than 20 vids in? This channel going to balloon if you keep this content level up 👏
I am always happy to hear such a fine compliment! Here’s to the next 20 videos!
Agreed!
That elf archer at 17:13 in top left is one of the Skarlocks Wood Elf archers. I STILL GOT EM! Mostly unpainted and in my vintage 1987 pile of shame.
Thanks so much for the video Jordan. About 2 years ago I combined a few old copies of heroquest, printed off some ye old inn cards, painted all the minis and did a complete restoration. I started playing the game with 10 year olds at the primary school I worked at. The kids love it. It is great to see them engage in collaborative gameplay too.
Quick note. We definitely did get Wizards of Morcar here in New Zealand. I got a set as a wee boy. It is possible that it was imported, I guess, but I remember them on the regular shelves in our local small town toy shop.
Info online was pretty patchy about it, good to get it confirmed!
Awesome video. I was one of those kids who had their imagination captured by this game 30 years ago. Love it and everything about it, now nearing our 40's my brother and I are busting out our copy this weekend to relive it.
This and Space Crusade were my entries toward Warhammer in the early 90s
The perfect one two punch to knock us into a GW hobby coma for life!
The best thing about HeroQuest is ... well, everything really! Love this game, even though StarQuest/Space Crusade has always been my favourite!
It’s always a tough choice between the two, and often depends on my mood! But it’s hard to argue just how influential HQ has been over the years!
This and my snes were my best Christmas presents ever.
Hard to beat either!
Great stuff! next stop -> BattleMasters!
It’s on the list!
This is fantastic. As a huge hero quest fan I’m loving this video. Thanks for all the effort put in.
Thank you! I’m just glad it was worth it!
Hero Quest was the gateway game for us. We played it so much and it led to both Warhammer Fantasy and Battle Masters. We bought the expansions Kellar's Keep, Witch Lord and Barbarian Quest Pack. Later we bought Advanced Hero Quest.
Even though the expansions was simple, the artwork, stories and mission descriptions made them as quests in a totally new world.
We picked up Hero Quest 10 years later but it was terrible game play. Long corridors were each hero needs to die 2 D6 as movement making it very slow.
Some of the rules definitely hold it back in the modern context, but it was such a great gateway to so many other table top adventures! I can't say I play HQ often anymore, but I'm still incredibly grateful to it for opening the door to Warhammer etc.
Loved this game, even had the expansions
Er Jordan, try storing the game along the long edge (.......?). Also, the furniture IS the best thing about HQ - ask the Witnesses who visited the Bard's House!
I’m sorry, no shelving unit can contain the power of the game!
Very good point!
I bought this game years ago because it was on sale at under half price. Never played it...just gathering dust. One look at the rules had me run for cover. Maybe one day i will give it a try...maybe!
It’s a very fun game if you can get into it! It especially benefits from nostalgia for me, but I think it still holds up as a family intro to dungeon crawling!
It's so funny because I remember playing this game as a kid with my brother, sister, and my mom's then husband. I had a lot of fun playing it and when I found it on Amazon I bought it to play with my kids. Thank you for such an in depth look into not only the history of the game but everything surrounding it too. Fantastic job
That’s awesome, I love that this game from childhood is now being passed on to the next generation too. Incredible legacy for Stephen Baker and the others behind such a great game!
Slightly too pricey,
I am so happy heroQuest have a second life. Bring young kids to the fantasy world!
Fantastic stuff! Please please please do a video on Advanced Heroquest. It meant so much to me and hardly anyone remembers it
I'd love to get some time on AHQ, I loved it back in the day!
I discovered the game right after Desert Storm (The North American Version) and I was hooked. Thanks for the motivation to start playing and collecting again. Great video
Brings back a lot of memories... I have long since moved on to the likes of Descent and Gloomhaven, but HeroQuest is where it all started...
HeroQuest feels like the first door on the dungeon crawling map for so many of us, step through it and a hundred other dungeon battling delights await!
This is so thorough.
You left out the Return of the Witch Lord video game.
I didn’t even realise they’d done this, it totally got past me!
Its available separately or in a combo box version. I haven't played it though. Your research and knowledge was impressive nonetheless.
Minor correction, it was "Moon Design Publications" and in evidence for Greg Stafford's comment, HeroQuest was advertised as as coming "next year" in the back of the RuneQuest 2 rules (published by GW) sometime around 1981...
That's very good to know, thanks! The timeline was tricky to keep straight with all the parties involved!
Awesome video my dude! I played HQ in the 90s at my friends house and many years later in 2020, my girlfriend got me a 100% complete version of the game for my birthday. Since then I play as much as I can and bought some more original minis, furniture and cards to upgrade my own cracking scenarios! Truly the best game ever made...
It's definitely stood the test of time! Thanks for watching!
@@jordansorcery True words! It's still excellent! And keep up your awesome work, my friend!
@ 31:00 - The artwork by Terry Oaks for the unknown 1990 expansion very closely resembles the cover box art for "Adventure Design Kit" expansion released in the UK in 1990. The box was Navy Blue and the same size as KK / ROTWL expansions.
I think that's a good shout - I revisited it after putting the video out and a lot of the composition is similar to, with the same setting as the Les Edwards piece so it feels like it could have been the original cover for the kit. Strange that it would be the only one they commissioned another artist for though, and stranger still that Edwards ended up doing the cover anyway!
A masterclass good sir. Like you, I was introduced into this hobby via HeroQuest. Then Space Crusade, Advanced Heroquest, Space Hulk and WFB. I just wish I'd picked up Warhammer Quest. It's nigh on impossible to find now and I refuse to part with a kidney to afford one. I'm currently working on an Advanced Heroquest project so I'm really looking forward to your video on that. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! I made a terrible mistake and got rid of my complete Warhammer Quest set years ago. Then spent the last few years buying it again part by part to avoid the mega price tag!
Great stuff. Blew my mind that Stephen Baker also designed Mysteries of old Peking and Inkognito! My HeroQuest copy from 1990 is still intact, murky paint jobs included. Picked up a complete box a few years agao, with Wizards of Morcar included for 3(!!) euros at a garage sale
I think I must have missed this one by a few years. Was big into Advanced Heroquest (and later Warhammer Quest) though.
Both AHQ and WHQ were worthy successors, though there’s a lot of old school charm to be had with HeroQuest!
I have attempted to research every aspect of this game, but even so, your video has revealed a few more secrets. Thanks for the great content!
Glad I could uncover a few extra facts! Thanks for commenting!
I just took the plunge and ordered the 2021 remake and a bunch of expansions with plans to buy the rest and 3d print a board. Here is to hoping they release more.
What a great informative video about one of the greatest table top games of all time!
Thank you!
As an Australian, I 100% got the UK version of the original two expansions. I remember the cover art very clearly.
My first introduction to games workshop was the Zagor Chronicles novels.
They were really good books
Zagor defeated me at Firetop Mountain, but I never got round to the novel series - one day I hope to though!
I have a lot of fond memories of this game back when I was a kid. My whole family would play it and we'd really have a blast.
It was such a wonderful family game, and so different to most others at the time!
Really informative history of HeroQuest. Thanks so much. I was a massive fan of the original and have recently picked up where I left off with the new Avalon Hill version. I run a Warhammer after-school club with my students and have started playing HeroQuest - needless to say, they're all hooked!
Thank you for your informative video! Superb job!
I played this in 1991. I still remember the ad for it.
"I'll use my broadsword..."
"Fire of Wraith..."
Then we got Advanced HeroQuest. F'ing amazing.
Those HQ and Space Crusade ads were mind blowing at the time! And totally with you on AHQ, what a game
I consider myself as one of the greatest HeroQuest nerds there ever were and even I didn't know all of this stuff, amazingly well done video.
Our local library had the board game for rent when I was a kid and I rented it as often as possible whenever I had the chance, always sad when it wasn't available and I had to go with any other "boring" (at least in the mind of a child) board game.
Also played the Amiga video game nonstop as a child as well, you could not set up your own adventures there but it was still great fun to re-experience the experiences from the board game.
And you know what's the greatest thing about the board game? With enough creativity, cardboard boxes, paper, pencils, a ruler, paint and patience you could add your own tiles, cards, rules and whatnot to the game.
Thats a trip of nostalgia, if only id found you sooner i might have intercepted my mom’s move sooner and got my dads copy of this amazing child hood memory!! Such an amazing game!!
I live in Germany and recently saw the reprint edition of the base game now going for €120. I am glad that my memories are for free and my family paid significantly less for such things. Though, calculating for inflation that still seems like it is two or three times more expensive than it was back in 1990.
The retro market has definitely seen prices surge in recent times. I'm not sure if it's just a lot of us who played the games on first release wanting to buy back the nostalgia or just general market trends, but it makes the hobby an expensive one these days!
The best thing about the Heroquest stickers were those holofoil ones. There was even one that had no fixed place in the book: The Star of the east jewel (I believe it's called) is a quest item that you "give" to one of the heroes.
That’s very fun! I sometimes missing collecting stickers for an album, such innocent fun
@@jordansorcery Didn't GW release a 40k sticker album last year?
Yeah there is a Space Marine heavy one from Panini, but I’m not a big fan of those big booted boys!
This was GREAT! Really enjoyed this - There was a LOT I didn't know!
Thank you Jordan!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I bought every expansion available to me in the UK and played this game so much it was awesome. And this was the stepping stone that took me to Warhammer a few years later, and then on to Bloodbowl the game I still play. So GW probably have HeroQuest to thank for all the money I have given them over the years.
Oh, and the box art was simply awesome. It's so vivid and alive telling a whole story.
Same here! HQ was such a massive influence. And yeah, that box is just epic!
My mother and I used to play this so much in the early to mid-1990s and it was so much fun. I was only a tween and a young teen, but HQ really opened me up to how brilliant and fun role-playing games could be. I still have the original 1990 copy of the game (with miniatures I painted myself) in my hall closet. It's complete in box with everything.
I love it! Those are the memories that stay with us, just fantastic family gaming - it's why I think these games often mean so much to us, just like a direct link to that wonderful past!
HeroQuest was also my start into the hobby and with the relaunch i’m back again. Cool video, thanks!
Me and my brother played this game so much as kids! Then we got the game “Battle Masters” which was kind of like Warhammer for kids also. It had a huge mat you had to put on the floor with a bunch of battle units, a cannon and a castle. Those games got me into painting miniatures, first all the ones from both games then actual Warhammer minis. Started playing Warhammer after that but we fizzled out during college and never got back into it.
Battle Masters is a heck of a game, hoping to do a video on it relatively soon! Unreal how much they fit into that box!
We still play it today!❤
Excellent!
It’s defo Christopher Lee in that advert 🧛♂️😀
I’ve heard a few other suggestions, but Lee is my bet too. It just seems impossible to verify!
Being a big Hammer Horror fan it does sound like Lee to me - Also in the late 80’s his career was a lot quieter and with the budget being so large for the advert I imagine they would have easily been able to hire him. Which is great because the advert is even more brilliant. Reminds me of Labyrinth 😀
I knew a fellow magic user would catch the cunning ruse that the Gargoyle is a Bloodthirster in disguise! Loved this video! Keep up the fantastic work!
-Ghul Drahtz Necromancer Extrodinare
It takes trained eyes like ours!
Had a lot of fun with this in college, and even after. We modified the rules to make it more difficult...monsters could reappear in a room if re-entered, and all chaos warriors could cast chaos spells at any time. Definitely made it more interesting.
That sounds like playing it on Elden Ring mode! I always love those wild house rules and variants though, really makes a game feel your own
just discovered your channel, i first played HeroQuest at a friends house, probebly in 1990, then as you said, Space Crusade, Space Hulk ect ect, well now i'm in my 40's and i just got the latest version of HeroQuest through from amazon, not gonna lie, i'm so excited to get playing
Welcome aboard! The new version of HQ does look awesome, I’m impressed with what they’ve done, though I still haven’t gotten hold of it myself yet!
@@jordansorcery amazon has it for around £60 at the mo, thats why i took the plunge and got it
This was my gateway to Games Workshop gaming, making the connection between the Games Worksop logo on the box and in a White Dwarf in WHSmith, was the reason I’m a wargamer now. Another awesome video, learnt so much I didn’t know about the game.
It was the ultimate first step on a long hobby journey! Still love HQ!
Brilliant video. I was 12 when I got my copy. I now own the new version which I love. Wish I could remember what happened to my original. I had space crusade too!
Thank you! It's odd how those much loved and played games just disappeared at some point isn't it - and then we realise, regret, and rebuy!
@@jordansorcery I used to collect and paint warhammer and it all spawned from this game. It was so great getting the new game, buying some paints and getting cracking on them. I got a few figures from Games Workshop to used as the extra characters in the trails, like Sir Ragnor and the Ork Warlord. Brilliant. I love it. Just need someone else to play it with!!!
Always one of the toughest parts, finding some good gaming buddies to join you on the quest!
Excellent research! I always wondered exactly how the IP was managed, the market agreements and the share of profits / revenues/ payments actually worked, as that could have been hugely messy….
Thank you! I think you're probably right, seems like there were a lot of moving parts behind the scenes over the years. Which is why its almost surprising that we even got the 2020 reissue! The same thing seems to affect the Space Crusade licence, which makes me think it's unlikely we'll see a new version of that any time soon, sadly.
I fondly remember the first time one of my friends used the spell “Pass Through Stone”. We were all convinced that he was cheating!
Ha, I can completely believe it! Magic really felt like game breaking stuff back then!
HeroQuest was the first exposure I had with RPGs and I used to love it. I had a copy, but I had another friend who had multiple copies, so things would get wild because we would throw in way more monsters and things than were typically available. Eventually you were making your own map extensions and whatnot. It was basically DnD Lite and it ruled.
Yeah it was a fantastic way to get to grips with ‘sort of’ roleplaying games, the flexibility to change and expand stuff was a blast!
i had the original but never got to play it with anyone, i remember my parents buying it for me at a car boot sale for a tenner! last week my partner bought me the remake for my birthday and have been thoroughly enjoying it with my son, or solo with the app :)
I’ve still not played the remake, but I’ve heard a lot of good things!
You know RUclips randomly recommended your channel
To me…no idea how or why but man I’ve enjoyed binging your videos this week 😊 I used to play hero quest etc with this Canadian kid who was in my school on the Isle of Wight and they were some happy memories
I'm glad it did! Thanks for taking a gamble on the video!
Another game never released where I'm from. The most similar game we had was called Drakborgen (Dragon Keep) and was released abroad as DungeonQuest but sadly with replaced art. Two years ago there was a kickstarter for a new version wich included a making of book of the original game. over 200 pages detailing every aspect of creation, sketchesof art, scans of design documents and more. An absolute goldmine of information.
No Space Crusade AND no HeroQuest - you guys had it rough!
DragonQuest is a game I’ve never played but am interested in, and that background book for the original sounds amazing! I wish every game had one of those!
"They may not be the best thing about HeroQuest" - I see what you did there! 🤣
I actually own one of the air elemental from that set of Citadel elementals and after ~30 years of ownership I finally painted it up this year. To be honest it's far from being the most impressive of miniatures, and today it is particularly underwhelming given how powerful elementals were in Warhammer Fantasy Battle, seeing as it looks a bit lost on a 40mm base and is shorter than a Primaris space marine. Still it's nice to own a little bit of Warhammer history.
Despite coming to the hobby in 1989 I'm not sure I ever played more than one game of HeroQuest. I do recall playing some sort of homebrew "game" made up by a friend that had us moving his RTB09 Terminator Squad miniatures around the HeroQuest board plus at least one other board from some random boardgame, ah the fun times to be had when nobody really knows what they're doing but everyone wants to play with the stompy soldiers with big guns and power fists!
The scale creep over the decades has definitely undermined the stature of a lot of older minis. I just love the shape and character of those designs!
Some of those early games were we all just made up the rules were great fun!
I remember wanting Heroquest like mad as a kid and getting Keys to the Kingdom instead.
Oh no, that is a rough trade! Not to say that I didn’t enjoy Keys to the Kingdom, but it was no HeroQuest!
I knew at the time I'd been short-changed by my parents too but then that was the overriding theme of my childhood toy experience. Great video btw.
The classic Bonestorm vs Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge debacle!
Archaon the everchosen wears the Armor of Morcar! When I read that in the 5th ed armybook it brought a smile to my face.
I didn’t know that, that’s great!
@@jordansorcery Really? Wow I tought you just didn't mention it. I just checked my copy of Champions of chaos (1998) to make sure. Yup, Armour of Morkar. 70pts magic item belonging to Archaon. From the flavour text : "This armour was lost to chaos for eight thousand years. During the age of chaos, Morkar, the first chosen one of chaos, was slain by Aenerion the defender, the first phoenix king."
Oh wow, that’s great stuff! Yeah, still plenty of lore and history out there that I’ve still got to learn!
@@jordansorcery You're making great videos sir, keep at it! Edit: Any chance of you doing a bit about the Realm of chaos books?
Certainly possible! I love those ruinous times so it might be fun to do some research on how they came together!
Oh! Thank you so much for such detailed history!
My pleasure!
I would love to see a range of Heroquest 6 or 7 inch figures both Hero’s and villains, they would sell out in seconds.
Kinda surprising they haven't given this a go yet!
Amazing trip through my childhood. Thank you for the fond look back of christmas and family fun. Amazing job Jordan. Well done.
My pleasure, thank you for watching!
Amazing video! Loved the original Heroquest release after getting it as an Xmas present. I also had the Tyrants Tomb book and had the same experience - countless tries and countless deaths lol. I really need to get the others. Oh and I had no idea there was a sticker album! 😮
Fantastically interesting video ! So glad I stumbled onto it at my work-lunch, today 😊
I’m glad you found it too! Hope it paired well with lunch!
The TV ads made me absolutely beg my parents for both Hero Quest and Space Crusade. I even convinced them to get me Kellar's Keep. I think I managed to find someone willing to try learning to play any of them with me a grand total of three times.
Getting others to join in could be tricky couldn’t it. My family were often pretty lukewarm on it, but luckily I was able to find some good friends who loved it as much as I did!
This is fantastic thanks man!
Me and my friends played the shit out of this, then a few years later my one buddy made his own version using large chart paper, something like the game of life with no ending, and cards for equipment, Characters, scenarios, magic, and the likes. we played this even more.
I remember making up all kinds of house variants and brand new games with my friends - we used to be so creative, not sure where that went!
HeroQuest was my introduction to board games (beyond Scrabble and Monopoly) as a hobby as well as high fantasy. I got it for Christmas, and I have such fond memories playing with my father and brother. I even re-bought the game several years ago off eBay (before it was reproduced), and played with my children. Thanks for the video.
Mine too, such a fantastic first step into fantasy board games and the tabletop hobby! Wonderful to hear you’re able to keep the legacy alive with you kids too!
Hero Quest, 1st Ed Space Hulk, and Battlemasters were my intro to GW here in the states. I didn't realize how lucky I really was to have that space hulk set and today my teenage nephew has possession of it. It is still in very excellent shape to boot. Love you channel!
That’s an incredible line up to get you started in GW! Would love to get my hands on 1st edition Space Hulk these days!
