Finally, you mentioned the inherent point of having an OLED: the superior response time and reduced ghosting! No one else gets this when comparing RP3+ to 505!
@@MadJackChurchill1312 Except that the synchronization is awful when compared to the RP3+. I own both, am typing this on the RG505, and the vita screen isn't as good as the RP3+'s
Worst case battery life being 4 hours doesn’t feel as bad as the 2.5 on my OG Switch or Steam Deck. Granted, my Switch is now like 5 years old so it probably should have been 3 or a little more. But getting regularly 6-8 hours in less demanding titles with lower brightness is very nice.
Steam deck can defenetly give you 6 or more hours if you only play the games this device can run... Ofc AAA games will give you 2.5 or less specially if you don't cap at 30fps and try to cranck graphics up to the limit, but even more demanding games can net you more battery life if you tune it.
Anbernic has good intentions but they always seem to fall a little short of the competition. regardless, this is the best they've been in a long time. I can see the extra 30 bucks over the pocket 3 being very appealing to people for an OLED screen, especially retro gamers.
@@noahw5887 it's hard to recommend one specific brand since every company is full of hit and miss products. I can recommend to you devices though. I've heard very good things about the miyoo mini and abernic RG35XX if the games you're trying to play don't require the use of analog sticks. If you need analog sticks and don't need a 16:9 aspect ratio (for things like PSP or game steaming), the retroid pocket 2S is amazing. If you plan on streaming games, playing PS2/GameCube games and/or playing games in 16:9, the retroid pocket 3+ is the best option for the money atm.
Adding this channel to my regular lineup that reviews retro handhelds. Good to know about the analogs. I'm an OLED fanboy, so I'm weighing the potential of this particular model.
Thank you for bringing up the response time on the RG 505! I have ZERO clue why virtually all content creators skip that fact. It's confusing why people only focus on vibrancy of the image when OLED provides much more than that. I also appreciate the worst case battery test, that's very helpful. Unfortunately no one to date has mentioned the notable price advantage of the RG 505 over the RP3+. It's over $20 cheaper than RP3+ thanks to $10 inherent coupon + 2.75% Aliexpress rebate + Black Friday coupons! An order of over $110 with BFS13 is $13 additionally off and an order of $180+ with BFS22 is $22 off. This is for the entire Aliexpress site. Still available for 1 more day I believe. I bought the RG 505 despite all its flaws not just because it's cheaper but because it was never going to be an endgame handheld anyways. If you're going to upgrade in a few months it makes more sense to get the cheapest and best in class for something which in this case would be PSP. RG 505 with that logic makes more sense than RP3+ and even the Odin Lite. Honestly the smartest option to date for retro gaming would be to buy the AYANEO Air. It'll play through all retro consoles and even modern ones. Spending roughly $600 - $700 rather than buying multiple consoles at $150+ would make way more sense. In any case, I appreciate the review. You got all of the negatives down especially great for this fantastic but flawed device!
The weirdest thing is that there is absolutely no single device coming out that doesn't have problems... for whatever reason, there is always something or the other missing from every device... 1. RP 3+ seemed like it would be the winner.. but then they screwed up the placement of start and select buttons, and it apparently heats like crazy. 2. 353M again is exteremly close to being a device without any issues, but then it cannot fully emulate PSP , so there is no reason to upgrade to it from an RK3326 device if PS1 is all you are going to get anyway. AYN Odin seems to be the only device that seems to not have any problems at all, the only downside being it is not a budget device and goes $200 + Shipping which if you are not in US would cost 25% of the device cost itself. There is simply no winning. There will always remain some or the other issue. I own a RG351P which was one of the best RK3326 device, but sadly it too cannot fully emulate PS1 games, Bloody Roar 2 runs with stutters. So even that one which was considered the best among 3326 is also not without issues. Also it has problems with 3.5MM jack being fault in majority of units due to bad solder jobs. i am really happy that our Chinese brothers are making these amazing devices and it's like Xmas gifts for rest of world, but its bewildiring that not a single company is able to produce one flawless device. Why doesn't one of these companies pick the best design features from their competitiors and produce a perfect device at 2 price points... 1 Upto PS1 performance, 2 upto PSP performance. Gamecube and PS2 are simply out of reach in the price point at which they are competing, those two will never be at a level where complete library would be playable. So they just stop aiming for that and focus on atleast perfecting PSP with perfect good build and electronics.
Lmao I can't believe people still crying about start and select buttons,,,russ from retro corps has tiny hands so he has to reach those buttons from the back,am guessing you have tiny hands aswell 🤣.I like were they put the start and select buttons.
I love Russ but so often he takes the positive spin even when it doesn't make sense. His 8Bitdo review on the new Ultimate controller simply made no sense as he started with saying that was the version to buy despite the fact the Hall Sensor version which was like $5 more was why anyone was excited about the controller. He rarely gives a harsh review even when a product very much deserves it. It was great to see his RG 505 review cause he didn't sugar coat it like usual when a product has major flaws!
Everyone, don't fall for this guy! He keeps saying that he buys every handheld and writes Anbernic etc. emails that listen to him🤣😂🤣 He's a talker and a liar! He certainly doesn't have a single handheld and under every video he says how great he is and that he will buy every handheld!
The gammaOS CFW makes this device so much better. The oled works better and you get 3 power modes. Plus it fixes this oversharpening issue that the anbernic os had. PS2 plays better (still with ee cycle fixes). Was disappointed when I got it, but sooo happy with the gammaOS fix. Edit: forgot to add the fact that on max performance mode on gammaOS all psp games including GOW run without hacks needed and much smoother.
Anbernic lost to retroid this time, if I were them this would be my comeback idea.. Release a device similar to powkiddy rgb20 but with modifiable sticks/buttons, you can either bring analogs upper part or the lower part of the device...the reality is that many people would prefer to play retro games on vertical handheld rather than horizontal..powkiddy had the best idea on paper but they failed to polish the device..I am just waiting for this kind of handheld..again, similar look to rgb20 but faster processor..they did a great mistake on making rg353 analogs below the dpad& buttons

Honestly the shitty analog sticks make this have absolutely no place on the market. The only reason people want this higher end chipset is to play 3d games, and if you just want to play 3d games the rp3+ is an infinitely better option, and if you want to stick to 2d games you are better off with just an RP3 or anbernic 353M or 353P. They definitely didn't put much time into the 505 they just rushed it to the market to compete with the RP3+
I don’t really get the use case for these cheap android handhelds. Wouldn’t you be better off just buying a controller and attaching it to your cellphone? Cheaper, better performance, same screen size, takes less space on your backpack (assuming you’d carry your cellphone anyways). What am I missing?
That and the farther to reach shoulder buttons. I would've bought this if those 2 issues are fixed because Anbernic officially sells there stuff in my country and Retroid doesn't.
You don't need a dim screen because maybe you don't play video games whilst in bed next to your partner as Russ seems to do a lot of! Always makes me laugh when he says that, he must have a very patient wife 😂
Exactly, playing my vita makes me not buy these guys until it completely surpasses it by a landslide, and nothing has done so yet. Steam deck too big, I mean in this size group
Anbernic is all about quantity over quality. I don't understand their logic, but as long as people keeps buying em, I guess they'll keep spitting them out.
I can care less about stacked shoulder buttons but making a device with more height than the RG503 is definitely a problem. Also when Anbernic makes Bigger Wider Handhelds they should add Stacked Shoulder buttons. This will make Anbernic devices more accessible to consumers.
