Bruno’s wide eyed surprise when his mother hugs him speaks to how much trauma he suffered at her hands, like he has gone way too long without love and affection from his own mother. On the flip side, seeing her son alive after ten years clearly affected Alma deeply as she realized how much she has missed him.
This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Even though Mirabel and Abuela reconciled, Bruno was willing to confront his mother and protect his niece (like a father would for his daughter) so Mirabel would not become deeply ostracized as he had been for most of his life. Then, Abuela, who had realized her idealism were the causes of the magic dying and their family's problems, took the opportunity to reconcile with Bruno. This shows Bruno's love for Mirabel is stronger than the gift he had and Abuela, after realizing her mistakes, decided to mend her relationship with her estranged son due to her reconcilement with Mirabel who helped her heal her broken, grieving heart. It's all so beautiful and sweet.
Beautiful, and totally true. Honestly, Bruno was the only boy out of Abuela's triplets, and possibly a strong reminder of her husband, Pedro. This perhaps may have been another factor towards her tense relationship with him, and some background questions with the creators did acknowledge Bruno would act quite a bit like his father (look at the face Pedro made when he learned they were having triplets + a sense of self-sacrifice). Bruno was, closer to Abuela's heart than Pepa and Julieta, and from their union all three triplets were very close, as well. His departure and absence did make him a family taboo, yet clearly it left his mother and sisters hurt as well. Like Abuela, though, they bottled up those feelings and never spoke of it, and the guy living inside the Casita walls didn't hear anything either.
No one saw the vision he had about Mirabel after she didn't get her door. Not even Abuela. From her perspective he just disappeared without explanation. The pain that her only son, the child who probably reminded her of Pedro, just disappeared must have been awful
And then when he suddenly appears out of nowhere on horseback, made her realize how much she really missed him, and that she regrets all the horrible things she said about him & choosing to force the entire family to not mention his name ever again 🥺
Finally Alma's maternal side is shown: as soon as she realises her Brunito is really there, she runs to him and holds him close (and she relaxes as she listens to his heartbeat). Yes, Bruno's reaction seems almost too passive. However, as soon as the embrace is over, Bruno looks like he wants to plead his mother to not let him go (as he used to receive some attention and maybe a quick embrace only when Alma demanded a vision from him... only to ignore him soon afterwards) BUT he's also RESIGNED to be treated this way. And Alma realises this: as soon as she lets go of him, she cups his face, looks at Bruno lovingly and kisses him on the cheek, as if she's telling him: "No, don't be afraid. I'm not letting you go, I'm still looking at you. You are my precious Brunito, your mama is right here!" Bruno acts like a scared defenseless little mouse that is expecting to be eaten by a cat... So Alma goes in "mama-bear mode" to make him feel safe and loved.
That would be the case of this wasn’t the same woman who said he own son didn’t care about their family and that the 15 year old grands who was 5 at the time! Was at fault for it
Bruno is so sweet! 🥹 People just not talking about him for no reason, it just broke my heart. 💔 And when people did talk about him, it was that he was a villan. I was so happy during this scene! I love that he came back to stand up for Mirabel, that is just so sweet!!!!! ❤❤❤❤

Y'know what? If Bruno cleaned up a little he'd look just like his dad. Pedro had a goofy side which Alma loved about him, and Bruno is overall goofy himeself
If it were realistic, grandma would never have apologized. I'm Brazilian, and in our culture, grandparents and parents never apologize to their children and grandchildren, no matter how toxic they are. They never admit they're wrong. Most of them had a rough childhood, and as a result, they unload their frustrations on future generations. It's like a cycle of hatred. When you finally muster the strength to leave that environment, society starts judging you as a bad child. They say, 'Wow, the mother did everything for her children' (Doing everything means doing the bare minimum as a mother), and now the children have abandoned her. No matter what happens, the victim will always be the villain in the story.

The grandkids just refer to their grandparents like that and sometimes the husbands and Alma's children call her that when a grandkid or more is present but when their not, they call her Mamá or Mamí, and call their late father by Papá or Papí, just a theory on another way the triplets could have called their mother and late father when they were younger.
