A Week On The Wrist: The Breitling Navitimer 8 B01 Chronograph

  • The original Breitling Navitimer is probably the most specific, in terms of purpose and function, of all pilot's watches, but the term covers what's actually a fairly diverse range of timepieces. The chronograph is strongly identified with aviation (to a significant extent, this is thanks to Breitling) but pilot's watches can certainly be highly accurate time-only watches intended to aid in navigation (often with shielding against magnetic fields) and the category can include GMT and two time-zone watches as well. Some of the most distinctive watches ever made were pilot's watches, including the Longines-Weems Second-Setting watch, and the Longines Hour-Angle. Like its brother-in-arms, the diver's watch, the days of a pilot's watch as an essential piece of gear in the cockpit are past; navigation today is a matter of GPS satellites and radar. But like diver's watches, pilot's watches still appeal, because the virtues of the world to which they are connected - bravery, the manifestation of hard-won skills, coolness under pressure - remain universally compelling. Behind every pilot's watch is a dream of being, as they say, "a natural-born stick-and-rudder man."
    Which brings us to the Breitling Navitimer 8 B01 Chronograph. As any student of aviation watches knows, Breitling probably has more street cred as an aviation supplier than any other single watch manufacturer. The company started making cockpit instruments in its "Huit Aviation" department in the 1930s - its first aviation chronograph was made in 1936 (a black-dial model with radium hands and numerals). The first Chronomat, with a slide-rule bezel for general calculations, was produced in 1940 and of course, in 1952, the most famous of Breitling's pilot watches was introduced: the Navitimer, with a bezel that's essentially a miniaturized version of the E6B circular slide-rule flight computer (nicknamed the "whiz wheel" or "prayer wheel" by pilots) the first version of which was introduced all the way back in 1933.

    I think it looks really nice. The Navitimer name doesn't really matter to me, it's just looks like a good watch and of course the looks are a matter of taste. Breitling build quality is always impeccable and the B01 movement hasn't ever let me down. It's robust and resistant to "mistakes" that would break other chronograph or date complication watches. I do believe the B01 movement was actually released in 2009, not 2013, as I own a Transocean Chronograph from 2009 which uses this movement.

    Cant agree with others in the comment section. I like this new design way more than the "normal" navitimer. Besides, you could still buy the "normal" one, so why complain about the navitimer 8?

      Modern watches are mostly about aesthetic, and aviation is a big part of the Breitling aesthetic. Why not take it up in a plane? Makes for a better, and more fitting video than just sitting in the hodinkee office chatting about it.

    Why do people think of things as a "tool" anymore? Saying a 10k watch is a tool is a complete lie. Its a luxury symbol of wealth, and not much more.

    • @indiefruit
      @indiefruit 5 лет назад

      A spanner is still a spanner even if we have no need for it. Jack mentions that we don't need them as tools anymore, but part of the 'tool watch' aesthetic is that it still feels fit for it's original intended purpose, even with all the fancy shit added on top.

    • @snowman01
      @snowman01 4 года назад

      There's many examples of "tools" that are used more for the art than practical purposes. E.g. people that can barely play guitar that drop $5k on a Gibson Les Paul, or people that don't race that buy a $100k AMG Mercedes. Appreciation of the tool's capability is a big part of the appeal.

      The plain "B" logo actually predates the winged logo. I do think it is good that Breitling makes a move towards more classy looking watches, rather than the big "in your face bling" watches they have been producing for a while.

    It does look very nice. Nice blue dial with while subdials. I like the layout of the numbers and markers around the dial. Easy to read the time, and very well proportioned dial. But this just doesn't feel like a Navitimer. Maybe they should have gone with a different name for this model. Like others have said in the comments, might as well get a Zenith El Primero or an IWC instead of this Breitling.

      @DMBVR4 5 лет назад +1

      Oughta be based on the Navitimer, considering that's what they CALL IT. I don't buy into that 30s model nonsense. It's a lazy run of the mill chrono, 400% more expensive than a Longines because it says Breitling on it.

    • @RichieKhan
      @RichieKhan 5 лет назад +3

      Matt McLoughlin You can literally make that argument for many high end watches. At the end of the day you're paying for a brand name more than the movement. Most in house engineered automatic Chronographs costs more than $8,000.

    Good that there are still plenty of regular Navitimer with wing logo available.
    The watch isn’t bad but you could change the name on the dial to Omega, Tag or any other name as it’s look is a bit common.
    The Navitimer bezel on this piece is sort of useless.
    I liked the video guys, cinematography was great as usual and jack you did a great job but it doesn’t make that watch any better.

    Pretentiousness (ie. flying in a private jet) doesn't win anybody over. 1:21 there's your answer about it's usefulness as an aviation instrument. Oh, and 3:40 is total BS. Your audience would prefer it if you could actually be critical with the watches you review, or is this what journalism has become?

    • @LanguagesWithAndrew
      @LanguagesWithAndrew 5 лет назад +4

      Ehh, that's not quite true. They're still popular with pilots, but only because of their history and cool factor. I know that a lot of pilots will buy/receive one as either a graduation gift when they get certified or, more common, when they get hired for their first job.

    • @lucioledizerot196
      @lucioledizerot196 5 лет назад +1

      Didn't know that, thanks for the info. But I would guess that it's not used for actual piloting anymore, unlike dive watches which are still somewhat useful and sometimes necessary for divers

    • @LanguagesWithAndrew
      @LanguagesWithAndrew 5 лет назад

      Oh yeah no, sorry, didn't mean to imply it was. They definitely don't serve any practical purpose anymore other than telling the time. I suppose if you really know how to use one properly it can serve as a last-ditch backup in case your other instruments fail, kind of like how dive watches now, when worn, only serve as a backup in case the dive computer fails.
