  • EURO NYMPHING ELEVEN MILE CANYON IN THE WINTER ... Fly fishing Colorado with ‪@MountainStateAngler‬ ... a 4k video
    On this cold and windy Winter day, AJ from ‪@MountainStateAngler‬ introduces me to one of his favorite stretches of water ... the South Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon near Lake George, Colorado. We got into some incredible fish and basically had the entire catch and release part of the river all to ourselves. An amazing day out on the water and a huge thank you to AJ for sharing one of his favorites with me. Disclaimer: Winter fishing is not easy, but the rewards may be many ...
    One other side note ... this was my second time fishing with the full Euro nymph setup. First time was on the Frying Pan at the Toilet Bowl. This time, at Eleven Mile Canyon, it was on a more traditional stretch of water .... and the Euro style nymph setup did not disappoint. I cannot stress this enough ... the Euro style nymphing method is absolutely insane!!! Leave a comment or question on the topic if you'd like ... I could happily talk about it for the rest of time 🤣

      Definitely a killer method! I've found myself gravitating back to the old standby setup lately (9' 5 wt with a strike indicator), but gotta push myself to do some more euro!!

      @@WhatMyLensSees Honestly man, I love spey casting, and traditional fly casting is great but where im at theres not a lot of back casting room, spey casting doesnt land me a ton of fish, euro nymphing I have landed more fish in one year then I have in a decade spey and fly casting combined. I love it man.

    Good stuff fellas. Surprised you haven’t fished that section before. I fished it in those exact spots about 5 years ago and caught so many cut bows and rainbows up in that upper section on midge emergers in the late summer/early autumn. Beautiful water in that canyon!
    We should setup a mutual channel contest! I’m willing to put up a day trip (as a guide) to a high mountain lake/stream for Cutts in late summer! Whaddya think?

      Hey there Trout Soup! Really appreciate the kind words and thanks for sharing your experiences up at 11 mile! Such a beautiful stretch of water and I was honestly shocked at the size and color of some of those fish I landed! One of my most favorite days of fly fishing ever! Would love to hear more of what you're thinking on the channel contest. Never done anything like that before, but always interested in collaborating with other RUclipsr fly fisherman here in Colorado. thanks again, dan

      Not sure Dan, was thinking about how could we get cross-channel feedback and involvement and boost subscribers and get them excited about fly fishing as we are! Maybe put up something in the spring where we (and get COLORADO Fisher in on it with us) go fish for a new species (maybe not for me but def for you guys) and give something like SMALLIES or WIPER on the fly a shot!

      Colorado Fisher yeah buddy! We fished em last year on a pilot mission to Jackson and my wife caught a monster 17”er on her first try there. I caught one there for the Mile High tourney last year and we boogied off but I’d like to spend some more time fishing for them. They don’t seem hard with the right retrieve and nice shad pattern

    If you want to shorten the learning curve on euro fly fishing, I recommend two DVDs, Modern Nymphing and Modern Nymphing Elevated, both by Lance Egan and Devin Olsen. Then I just started a new book, Tactical Fly Fishing by Devin Olsen, which I highly recommend too. I've fished that exact spot but never have I done as well. Good job and I love your fishing videos.

      Mr Mitchell. So good to hear from you! Matt tells me you're a big fly fisherman and hoping we can get after it one day soon! Believe it or not, this was my first time to 11 Mile but definitely not the last. I'm loving the Euro setup, and as long as I don't keep breaking my rods, it will be the only way I fish :) That hole was really producing and I don't think I would've gotten those fish with the old way of strike indictor fishing. And funny you mention it, I was just listening to a podcast with Lance Egan last night. He's definitely a legend! I'll be sure to check out your recommendations ... thank you for that! Great to hear from you and thanks for the nice comment and channel support :) dan

    More beauty -- fish and river environment. I'm presuming you're using a GoPro for a lot of this footage. Interested in your settings. I've just completed a look at the "cinematic" preset which I'm hoping will complement footage from my Nikon Z6.

    • @WhatMyLensSees
      @WhatMyLensSees  4 года назад +1

      Yep you’re right Raymond. I’ve got 3 go pros with me when filming. One is attached to my chest, another to my net, and another on a dome port (which I rarely use but am going to start using more as it warms up). My newest is the GoPro hero 8 black which is the one attached to my chest. In addition to the GoPros, I also have my iPhone 11 Pro Max with a gorillapod, and also my Z6 rolling on a tripod. Lastly, I’ll bust out the dji phantom 4 to get some aerial shots when I’m feeling really ambitious :) so it’s a lot to juggle, especially in the dead of winter when It’s hard to stay warm. Then ya throw fly fishing on top of that and it’s quite the adventure!! As for settings on my GoPro, Here’s what I’ve got setup most of the time: 4K, 60fps, wide, hypersmooth on, low light off, protune on, bit rate high, shutter auto, white balance auto, iso min 100, iso max 400, sharpness medium, color flat. I can burn thru sd cards pretty quick with these settings but found it produces very nice footage 95% of the time :) the other real struggle is battery power. They just don’t stand up well to cold temps, so I’ve had to come up with some hacks to try and keep the batteries holding a charge in cold temps. Hope that’s helpful Raymond and always appreciate your support and comments!! dan ps - and one other thing I forgot to mention, I use ND filters once it gets lighter out (usually by 9am) ... my go to is the polar pro nd8 filter. Helps keep the shutter speed down and gives some motion blur.

      @@WhatMyLensSees Thanks for adding all that info. Sounds like you've got all the angles covered 😀 I finally updated from my 8 y/o GoPro Hero2 to the 8 Black (the subject of my latest video). As I set it up fully manual at 24fps/1/48, NDs were a must have for me. I'll be examining my choice next week. Interested to hear you use auto white balance. Looks like it works well. I'll have to test that out as well as different frame rates.
      I also have + − ISO locked to 100. No sharpening (I can't imagine what high would look like!) High bitrate.
      I agree with your battery assessment -- they don't last long.
      I assume with all those cameras, you're editing multicam.

    • @WhatMyLensSees
      @WhatMyLensSees  4 года назад

      Raymond Parker I’ll be sure to check out your video here soon! And I’ve been using auto WB simply because I’m so busy with the fishing that i tend to forget to update some of the camera settings throughout the day so just try to keep everything as simple as possible unless there’s a real specific shot in after. I also shoot 24fps if I know it’s not a shot I’m going to slo-mo in post.

I was able to both subscribe and ring the bell for notifications with no issues whatsoever. So I'm not sure what else could be causing it. I also checked and my channel and almost all my videos are all marked "Not for kids" so don't think that should be an issue either. If you know of anything else, I'm open to investigating. Frustrating to say the least... but thank you again for letting me know and always appreciate your support my friend! dan

    if you dont mind me asking- what was your rig (length of tippet below sighter, where'd you have your dropper(s)? I'm getting into Euro nymphing and the winter conditions can be challenging, so I'm curious as to your set-up.

    • @WhatMyLensSees
      @WhatMyLensSees  4 года назад

      Hey Martin, thanks for stopping by! Here's my humble suggestions for you getting started. Hold your tippet spool at mid-chest, and take the tippet and string it out one arm's length (guessing 3-4 ft). I attach another piece of tippet to the end of this and keep the tag end. I like to use a "drop shot" rig where my top 2 flies are attached to tag ends and they are usually spaced about 18" apart. And then for the anchor fly / bottom fly (about 18" apart from the middle tag end fly), I like to put something pretty chunky on there to make sure the rig gets down deep quickly. That usually does the job very nicely! And you're spot on, Winter fly fishing can be crazy challenging (especially when you're trying to film everything too 🤦‍♂️), but the rewards can be so worth it! Hope you have a great time with the Euro nymphing and just stick with it even if it feels a little frustrating at first. You'll get the hang of it in no time, and likely never want to go back to the old ways :) take care, dan
