Thanks for this detailed analysis and reaction to VoicePlay's "Thriller." Their releases are delightful...musically wonderful and just so fun. Kathy is unrecognizable in that makeup. The zombie dead eye contacts they all wear are freaky! I always love it when J. None is back with VoicePlay. Geoff did a wonderful job with this project and especially in narrating Vincent Price's part of MJ's original video. Their acting skills are top-notch. VoicePlay are so talented and definitely deserve more recognition. Spooky season has officially arrived!

I think it is incredibly difficult to take on one of the most iconic artists, most famous songs. VoicePlay will not try to make a carbon copy of any video. If you want the original, watch the original. I have to remind myself on every video they perform, that they do not have music filling in the background. Their sound is so full, so rich that I don't miss the music, nor notice the absence. Would I have made other choices in this arrangement? Yes, but nobody would ever see that video, and they wouldn't be missing a thing. I try to appreciate the similarities and the uniqueness of their arrangements. Thank you for your thoughtful reactions! 💖

I agree that no one is topping a michael jackson original. It's like topping Queen. You can do an amazing cover and respect to the original. But doing an upgrade is like doing a world record pole vault. They did this on a tiny budget, so huge kudos on that. As well as doing it in acapella. I think Michael would have been impressed with the effort.

MJ is an icon with extreme talents that cannot be replicated. Yet, I'm not a pop fan so I don't feel possessive of his work.
I'm one year younger than MJ so grew up watching him first with the Jackson 5. Then my taste diverged away from pop once I was a teen. MJ was ubiquitous on radio and, gasp, MTV back when it played videos. He was inescapable but not revered for his talent when he was a youngster.
Covering this song is an obvious Halloween choice for VoicePlay. I cannot imagine another acapella group bringing the vibe necessary to approach this iconic piece.
Riffing/acrobatics are definitely a matter of preference; just like MJ's little vocal tics/asides that were his hallmark.

I'm also not the greatest fan of extraneous vocal runs. But these guys have won me over somewhat on that point, and they don't especially bother me in this piece even though I agree with you that they weren't really necessary. The artist you're thinking of, Deejay Young, does emulate MJ very well in VoicePlay's covers of both The Way You Make Me Feel and Man in the Mirror. But I felt like J, Eli and Cesar between them captured enough different aspects of MJ's voice here that I can hear his echo in their performance.

I’m surprised that you seem (so far) to be the only reactor to catch that cut off of background vocals mid-word on ‘paralyzed’. That is one of my fave bits - right as Cesar freezes, hand up. Just a sneaky little tidbit.
I’m a little surprised as well that you felt they didn’t quite catch the ‘feel’ of MJ. I felt J had it really well especially on the ‘close to midnight’ line. But I think the one who really got it was Eli’s repeated ‘Thriller’ lines. That higher sharp tone felt very like the original to me. With almost a bit of the soft horns in it.

And another nod to the original visuals that I enjoyed was the quick turn of the heads with the close-up reveals of full zombie form. Straight out of MJs original. Right at the beginning of the zombie dance scene.

I am not a huge fan of pop. Although I do appreciate the genius that was Michael Jackson, it simply isn’t something I listened to a lot. So I have no emotional investment in this or any of the songs. So I think it’s easier for me to just appreciate what VoicePlay was able to do.
While I do think it would’ve been amazing to hear DeeJay sing with them, I think J was a better choice for the video. He brought his own energy to the part.
I was a bit concerned when they did the MJ number with DeeJay that they might be tempted to try to match the original because his voice is so similar. But they went ahead and slowed it down and gave it that jazzy feel that a purist might object to. I know that they received a lot of flack when they added beatboxing to Phantom.
I think that when someone is invested in the song or to the original artist, they tend to have an expectation that may not be met. But, at least to me, a cover should not try to mimic the original. It should be unique, while still paying homage to that original. For myself I had a very hard time appreciating their Rich Man video for a long time. For personal reasons I was very invested in the movie version of song emotionally. It took a while, but I was finally able to separate the original from their interpretation. Now it’s almost as if they are two separate songs. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I agree with you on pretty much every point -- especially your point that cover versions shouldn't be a direct copy of the original. (If it's exactly the same, it's not a cover, it's a pastiche.)

I wasn't around when MJ was rising to fame, and growing up wasn't really exposed to his music much, so I'm not super attached to it personally. That said, when I find a good cover of anything I like to go explore the original, and I have to say I really like the ways they adapted this to respect MJ and still make it their own. Even my partner, who isn't much for acapella, still REALLY likes this!

I think you're thinking of DeeJay Young. Yeah, his voice is a bit closer to MJ's. But I think the boys did him proud. This has nudged out Valhalla Calling for the number one slot for me. One of their very best. Plus, one of the most fun, and spooky!💙

I think my two favorite choices in the arrangement were to start big right away with "Thriller!" (although I do love the show escalation at the start of the original) and then to hold off on the chorus until after several verses so it really lands hard. I personally really liked J None's vocals on this, even though they weren't berry MJ-esque. And then the performance, costumes, makeup, setting, lights… absolutely epic!!! What a winner! 🥰 Oh, and Geoff is clearly channeling the spirit of Vincent Price 😂
Side note: my picky wording peeve is you saying "digged it" when the past participle of "dig" is "dug" 😂😅

Watching your reaction again, it's that good! One thing I would like to add is the Vincent Price nod by Geoff. I'm oddly sensitive a out the spoken word. Did you notice the change in Georgia delivery as he says "your body starts to shiver?" You can hear it change from regular narration to evil smile. It continues with "For no mere mortal can resist (slight pause) the evil of the thriller!) There's something to be said about the position of the mouth and lips that changes a regular narrative to the evil smirk threat that emphasizes the atmosphere with just that grin. Although you can't see it in Georgia expression, I truly felt that wicked grin in that moment, and really made my body start to shiver!!

Totally agree with your professional opinion, but not so much with your personal one. Maybe because I'm so old, I'm not invested in the MJ experience. I think this was brilliant. You may want to compare it with their version of Man in the Mirror. J None and Deejay Young are both in it, it was one of the two they did on the day when J was leaving for the Navy.
And yeah, I think of Yeah as a filler, like like (which I would hate).

Great reaction/analysis. I agreed with everything you said. It’s always risky to take on an iconic song like this one-I’m glad Voiceplay has the courage to do it, because they nail it most of the time (Nothing Else Matters, Carry on Wayward Son, In the Air Tonight, etc.). I loved every element of this, sets, costumes, vocals, acting, etc., but there was some kind of MJ magic that I needed and it wasn’t fully there.

I found this more enjoyable as a cover mostly for the comic relief in it to dilute the creep factor of zombies which are not my favorite monsters. The music however is great.

Thanks, Daniel, for what you said about runs! I've often felt that runs are overdone in a lot of pop music. But I haven't been able to articulate what you said about finishing a vocal line with a run being much more appropriate/pleasing than standalone runs. To me, the disconnected runs seem either filler, or showing-off, or both, especially among singers that do a LOT of them. Some of these singers have fantastic voices, but I don't listen to them because of the constant acrobatics. I wish they'd choose songs that have a great melody and then believe that it's good enough to carry the performance without constant caterwauling.
I KNOW a lot of people disagree with me, which is why some of those singers are so popular. I'm just expressing dissident view.

So I actually like this version better than the original. That said, neither this nor "The way You Make Me Feel" are among my favorite VP covers. Not because i don't like what VP did with them, i very much do, but because I don't really like the originals. I have a pretty extensive music library. Even so, there's no MJ in it.
