Ingredients (for 8 manju):
1 cup lima beans, ½ cup sugar, ½ ts salt, ¾ cup flour and ½ cup extra flour, 2 eggs, ¼ cup sesame seeds, ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk, 2 ts of vanilla extract
Directions:
Let's make sweet filling first!
1. Soak 1 cup of lima beans in cold water overnight (for about 10-12 hours).
2. Pop the beans out of the skins with your fingers.
3. Place the beans in a heavy bottomed pot with water and bring to a boil over medium high heat for 10 minutes.
4. Lower the heat and simmer for about 35-50 minutes until the beans are very soft and spongy.
5. Mash the beans with a wooden spoon until they have the consistency and look of mashed potatoes. *tip: If you need to make a large quantity, using a food processor will be faster
6. Add ½ cup sugar, ¼ ts salt, and 1 ts vanilla extract and keep stirring for about 1 -2 minutes with a wooden spoon. The filling should get stickier. Keep stirring so the filling doesn't burn or stick to the bottom of the pot.
7. Turn the heat off and cool down.
Make dough:
1. Add ¾ cup flour, 1 egg, ¼ ts salt, ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk, and 1 ts vanilla extract to a mixing bowl.
2. Mix it well with a wooden spoon until smooth
Make 8 manju:
1. Divide the dough and the filling into 8 same-sized balls on a floured cutting board.
2. Flatten out each dough ball by pressing it down with the palm of your hand.
3. Place a filling ball into the center of a flattened dough ball. Wrap the dough around the filling
4. Seal the edges of the wrapped dough and form into the shape of an egg or chestnut.
5. Dip the side of egg shaped manju into water first, and then dip into sesame seeds so the seeds stick to side. For chestnut shaped manju, dip the top into water, and then dip the top into seeds.
6. Brush the sesame seeds with egg yolk.
7. Repeat for each pastry, and place the manju on a cookie pan lined with baking sheet, with the sealed part of the manju on the bottom.
8. Bake in the oven at 350°F on the middle rack for about 20 minutes.
9. If you make chestnut shaped manju, bake them a little longer for a deep, rich color.
10. Serve as dessert or snack. Хобби

Maangchi, I am obsessed with your channel!! I've watched your videos since before my daughter was born, she's almost 2, and you always make me hungry! I used your Mandu recipe for my husband's birthday and there was nothing left :D
Jacquelyn Emerick I'm touched by your message! Good luck with your Korean cooking!
***** Yes, when the lime beans are cooked and mashed, they really taste like fluffy chestnuts.
Maangchi is my no 1 favorite cooking channel!
yay! thank you!
I told my mom about this recipe Maangchi, and being from Spain she seriously had doubts about sweet lima beans. We made the recipe a little bit ago and she's a convert. Thanx!
I just made today. Working with the dough and filling was very tricky. They were both soft and sticky...I thought I ruined it. But...I was determined...after all was said and done...they turned out pretty and very tasty. I will definitely be making this again and again. Thank you maangchi! You are my korean food goddess :)
Thank you so much for your comments. Check out the recipe on my website. I posted detailed written recipe, photos of the ingredients, tips, and a story about where I got this recipe. Cheers!
Turkish caption was submitted by one of our volunteer translator viewers! Thanks a lot! ruclips.net/user/timedtext_video?v=PNaYmKGFQ6E
Thank you for making these. My mom used to make them but she passed away 6 years ago and I've missed her and her cooking. I will have to try to make them so I can carry on the tradition.
English caption was submitted by one of my viewers! Thank you so much!
Maangchi hi
Nice coking. U
Maangchi o
Magnificent! Those look very pretty and tasty. Finally - a way to get kids to eat their Lima beans.
Maangchi, I made this treat this afternoon. It was SO easy. It taste sort of similar to the Filipino "hopia" pastry (I am Filipino). Thank you! You are my favorite!
Greek caption is available now. Sofia Anna did the caption for my Greek speaking viewers! Thanks a lot!
Dear Maangchi, please don't take my joke personally when I said " I hate you with your cooking recipes coz they make me hungry". I usually browse them at night and in bed, just watching how it turns out, really, really makes me hungry, I cannot eat at those times due my medical condition, I am, in fact, placed an order for your new book for release in May, please, Don't feel bad, luv, luv your cooking, I'm bad, I apologize! Thanks and more power to you!
I have just had a rubbish day at work because of petty powerful people.
Seeing you cook makes me feel happy,
Why can't people just enjoy what they do,
And bring happiness to others?
Looks delicious. I'll have to put this on my special occasion list to give my friends for holidays. Thank you for posting such wonderful recipes. I love cooking as a hobby and to impress my mrs, especially Korean dishes.
@yarima13 It will be ok in the fridge for a couple of days. Put it in a plastic bag and keep it in the fridge. Or Keep it in the freezer, up to 1 month then you can eat it anytime you want.
Vietnamese caption was submitted by Dịu Bùi (RUclips channel)! Thanks a lot!
Just pulled mine out of the oven. Had to make a few adjustments. (Made the filling out of canned [rinsed] garbanzo beans, and made homemade condensed milk. Basically, used what I had on-hand instead of spending money on two ingredients.) I've never had manju before, so I can't compare the taste to the original recipe, but I like my variation. :)
Maangchi^^ always enjoying your receipe and your cooking video! you are really really a happy girl and always give us a brightness and joyful time! This manju looks great! will try with my babies! Thanks a lot!
( you are so charming and lovely lovely lovely!!! we all love you!)

Keep shining bright!!
@ninnagirl90 Was the dough too wet and sticky? If so, use flour just as I did in the video. Don't give up making beautiful manju. Practice makes perfect! cheers! : )
@yoyomax12 I'm looking forward to seeing your manju! I am sure yours will look beautiful and delicious!
@yarima13 wow, I'm impressed! You must be generally good at cooking because manju making is a little bit challenging for a beginner cook.
@ThePuppetMuffin It's one of my upcoming video recipes. Thank you! Meanwhile, check out my gyungdan rice cake recipe. It's similar to mochi.
i love how the way you cook.. the sweet smile in your face is really added a good flavor in your food. thank you for inspiring your viewers.. i am following you. ❤
@markony94 Use red beans. I sometimes use red beans (adzuki beans).

:)
OMG I had these before.. I was wondering what the filling was.. had no idea it was Lima beans..! sooooo good. now I can make it at home!
I'm watching this video enjoying coffee and Manju that my friend made for me yesterday. I will try your recipe sometime soon!
OH MAANGCHI, this looks plain delicious, sometimes I wish I could reach out and take some of your delicious food, it makes my mouth water everytime.
Just let me suggest something, whenever you crack an egg, do it in a different bowl, not in the one where the batter is... Just in case the egg is rotten or something similar, so it won't ruin your other ingredients ♥
I made these recently and they were so good! I gifted a box of four to a friend to share with her family too so thank you for this recipe! I think I stuffed mine too much because the pastry skin broke during cooking
I love adzuki beans!!! I'll try and make adzuki beans filling later. This recipe looks superb!
These are absolutely beautiful. I will be trying them in my kitchen. I love lima beans and can't wait to give them a taste!
Those manju are gorgeous. Shows that adzuki beans aren't the only beans that can be sweet.
I really really Love to watch your cooking video. Looks all yummy. Am learning to cook
Thank you for your cook and backing class that I really enjoy to learn.
I'm korean but I live U.S.A. I don't have much experience for baking therefore I don't know multi recipes but I will learn alot from your video. Thanks again and I will try to make a someday I love lima bean.

I made this on Friday evening, they were awesome! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
I like the way you packaged them, very beautiful for a gift :)
i love it when my mom makes this (isn't this pastry supposed to look like a chesnut?) when i try to make it, it always seems like there isn't enough dough to cover the sweet bean paste! so i always put less filling inside to prevent it from opening.
omg!! Maangchi, I always get surprised on your recipes!!! you make everything that looks so yummy, also that bread is the one that I bought in asian market in not so cheap price, but now with your recipe i can make it by my self at home!!Thank you so much!!!

Hi, just wanted to thank you for sharing this recipe it was so simple to make yet delicious! I made this today and i loved it! :D i never expectdd it to taste this good considering that it had beans but it was realy good
This is a great pastry! Would you please consider posting a video on how to make "Sesame Balls?" I don't know what the name is in Korean, but they're SO good, and I bet yours would be the best, and the video would be fun, because you make everything fun.
I use canned cannelini beans, which has a more smooth consistency, but is also tasty :D
Condensed Milk in dough recipe, I did not thought about it. Thank you for posting this video. I have learned a lot from your videos.
