    Great points! As a coach I get this question a lot. My reply always begins with, 'it doesn't matter so much if you use a closed or open stance, but always be sure to begin your stroke from a balanced position with strong base.' This can be either open or closed, and, as you illustrated here, depends on the situation.

    Thanks! Great tips. One year into lessons my coach started to work various stances on my backhand. OMG did that ever mess me up for a few months. I would work it in weekly lessons and leave saying: "she is messing up my shot." But now being able to use my topspin backhand in just about any scenario is a great asset. Glad I stuck with it. Good to hear you echo her lessons.

    I'm currently a ~4.5 tennis player and i was introduced to tennis with a singles mindset of getting an overall game. In singles, I have no problem coming to net when I am able to set up the point and volley balls away. I know the ball is coming my way so I can anticipate where it is going
    My issue is that when I play doubles, i tend to freeze and am not able to react fast enough to the ball/anticipate where the ball is going. Can you make a video on how to improve netplay reaction at net? and possibly provide a few drills?

      @johndye9494 9 лет назад

      This is a great question -- I see this issue with a number of high school players, I look forward to Ian's perspective. One thought I had is that sometimes having another player helping you on the court makes you passive -- you don't want to look like a ball hog and/or you tend to rely on your partner to get it. My advice: get greedy! Hit everything you can get a racquet on.

    • @xshdowshotsx
      @xshdowshotsx 9 лет назад

      John Dye Thanks for the tip. I really like to get greedy as I want to attack every single volley, but I know that my partner will typically have a better vantage point. If I'm paired up with a smart partner, I usually dont have this problem because i'll end up going in after i realize my partner got me a setup ball, the issue is that I usually dont get a smart partner that plays the court/player. so im stuck, shading and making sure im covering my angles rather than focusing on the opposing net player make his move

      Phillip Chen I say look at the players movements more so you can predict where they are hitting. Once you know where the ball is going then focus on the ball only.

    Another great video.
    Ian, i really feel awkward when doing my double handed backhand. My coach teaches double handed as the basics. should i switch to doing single handed forehands or learn double handed first then learn one-handed after?

  • @johndye9494
    @johndye9494 9 лет назад

    Good point -- one size (stance) does not fit all situations. I like how you illustrated several different footwork patterns for several different types of balls. The one caveat I would add is that I discourage players from ever leaning or falling backwards -- it reduces balance/power while also making a difficult shot even more challenging. So when a ball is coming fast, I usually say "stand your ground, don't let me [or the opponent] push you back." Your thoughts?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  9 лет назад

      John Dye There's no doubt that "standing your ground" is best in most situations, John. It doesn't give time or extra space to your opponent. However, its a much more difficult shot to hit. Some players need to give themselves that extra time to hit a reasonable shot back. However, at a certain level of competition if you don't have the ability to take the ball on the rise your results will most likely suffer!

    Funny thing about youtube...I don't think there is a single video out there that does not have at least a few thumbs down ratings. This is an excellent instructional video by a professional who obviously knows what he is talking about and yet at the time of this writing there are 3 thumbs down votes. Wow! Thank you for posting your vids for those of us who appreciate the value of your lessons! Thumbs up!

    Great video on a subject that has been wildly complicated!!! There is NO STANCE for every shot across the board from the baseline. Tennis is very situational. Excellent video Ian!!!

  • @madwarrior1920
    @madwarrior1920 9 лет назад

    My theory is that the closer to the middle of the court I am the closer my stance. I use more opened stance on the corners so I am able to open up my shoulders and not be restricted to only down the line.

    Hi Ian,
    I started Tennis 6 months ago at age of 24 which is definitely quite late for the game and that used to pull me down "how unlucky I am to had never been introduced to the game in my childhood". Lately I have been thinking what about coaching?
    I do fully understand that this job guys is not easy but referring to my country, the game is very unpopular and might be possible to introduce the game to kids and late starters . I have passion to make living out of Tennis. Do you think it is a reasonable idea for me to work on the path of coaching beginner? Can you guide me to some tips on how to make my way to this dream?

    i agree with what you said, but i think the title of the video is misleading
    i dont care what sport we are talking about, there is no 1 way to do something, when you are on the defense. you do whatever is necessary at the time
    however, when i look at the title, i am expecting an answer to the question of "which footwork is best", when one has the choice
    for example, it used to be that we were taught to use a handshake grip on our forehands, and hit with a "closed" stance. by that, i mean the front and back foot are even distances from the sideline - somewhat what you are calling a squared stance.
    there is never a time when you want the front foot more closed than a squared stance - that simply takes away any power one has
    however, nowadays - just about everyone hits the forehand with a very open stance, and a somewhat westernized grip.
    so this is what i was expecting of your video, based upon the title - what sort of footwork should i attempt to perform, when i am in control of the point.
