    Great video , against better opponents I struggle creating that depth, when I do I sometimes hit past the baseline. I'm going to focus on creating more top spin as well to have greater control. Thanks again good stuff!

    Cool, I never really had this problem, most of my shots land near the baseline. It sure would be nice to have that remote control ball machine to practice with though! I spend 90% of my time on the wall practicing.

    • @AIMBOTKATFISH
      @AIMBOTKATFISH 4 года назад +1

      Right! The thing about hitting against the wall is that you don't really get a feel for the height you should be hitting to get the right depth.

    good stuff - it comes to mind that in match-land, one could easily go harder than normal on everything and loose the practice length but I'm sure this will iron out and more good training time will sort things cumulatively

    Could you do a video on how to deal with people who chip and charge a lot and who slice their backhand down the line a lot to your forehand. I'm about 6.1 but keep losing to a guy who keeps drop shotting on his backhand to my forehand or he chips and charges and runs in. On a baseline rally I win about 70% of the time but this slice and drop shot to my forehand is really tricky to play against as it brings me into the net which is a real weakness in my game as i'm a 5ft 7ins counter puncher. Im strong for my height so my shots have decent power but mabye some are a little too short occasionally and those are the ones he tends to drop shot or slice to my forehand

  • @BIGLOVE4TRUTH
    @BIGLOVE4TRUTH 4 года назад

    I play mostly doubles so I try and go for about 10-24 inches over the net, especially cross court. Deep and low. But I mix it up with spins and height. Low bouncing balls tend to keep opponents on defense. Intermediate player.

  • @alfandosavant4639
    @alfandosavant4639 Год назад +1

    So i found this concept in table tennis. Hear me out. If your shots lack depth (considering you hit topspin groundstrokes) the problem is more often the contact. If you just brush the ball (thin contact) then the ball has lots of topspin, not much depth. The idea to hit it with thick contact makes the famous "hit 2-3 balls" drill. After years of playing, IMO everything just seems to direct towards the contact.
    So next time you want to hit deep shots, just remember to make a thick contact with the ball!

    I have problems with depth, but the funny thing is that my balls have a good height and even with that, the ball goes to the service line or just a little more further. I would say that the reason for that is because I do a lot of topsin in my forehand and that makes the ball fall with a huge arc, but maybe I am incorrect.

    Great video, thanks! An issue I have with depth is that I cannot easily see the baseline, especially in a clay court, so I tend to feel safer if the ball falls after the service line where I can see it. Do you have a tip that could help in this situation?
    Thanks for the great videos.

    Thanks Ian, this is perfect. Really appreciate the answer to my question. Will certainly go out and practice this. All the best from Cape Town, South Africa.
    Another question perhaps? I recently started playing again (about 5 months ago) after 8 years or so. I use a semi-western forhand grip and djokovic grip style double backhand. I get a lot of topspin on my strokes and plenty hieght over the net (about double the net height), but I am trying to flatten out some of my strokes a bit as sometimes they seem a bit loopy. Do you think I'm putting im possibly putting to much emphesis on swinging up and not enough emphesis on swinging through the ball? Is there possibly a tip relating to where I should finish my strokes (maybe over the shoulder or accross my chest, etc) in order to get the desired effect? I also notice that sometimes I shank the ball off the bottom of my frame and it flies skyward!
    Maybe I'm swinging up to much, or maybe I just need some more time on court and have to hit a lot more balls? You possibly already have a video relating to this and if so maybe you could post the link below.
    Thanks again, sorry for the long explanation lol

    From your narration dieing the video is apparent you're not adjusting the speed of the swing, so is it the swing path or the face angle?
    Which would lead to more consistent control?

    • @zandemen
      @zandemen 6 лет назад

      I'm going to guess the swing path.

    I just drive the ball more with some topspin instead of an excessive amount in which I usually hit with.

    Hi Ian, would you please explain why do most male pros on TV have their racket face closed and most female have their racket face open while it's traveling back.
    Thank you.

    • @overkill6446
      @overkill6446 9 лет назад

      I think the reason for this is because the males on average, hit with more topspin than the women. Closing the racket face is a way to make sure you're setting up to swing vertically.

  • @cecil5656
    @cecil5656 9 лет назад

    The advice seems good but adding height clearance when you are playing doubles invites trouble, doesn't it?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  9 лет назад

      +cecil5656 Yes, in theory :)
      If your opponents aren't poaching then no, but most high level players will find a way to go after those higher balls! This video was more geared towards singles!

    Hi Ian, I have been trying hard to hit aggressive forehand groundstrokes (to get an edge over an opponent) but this often leads to a net or an out. How would I control it? Also do you have any tips on the grip for this shot.

    • @silviutudorescu8114
      @silviutudorescu8114 Год назад

      semi western grip, swing as loose as possible and finish the follow through over the shoulder, but don’t hesitate to swing fast into the ball moving through the ball

    Are there any videos of you playing tennis matches on RUclips as I'd like to see how you play in a competitive situation.
    Why do we still call digital footage 'video'?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  7 лет назад

      "Video" is the correct term. I believe what you have in mind is "film", which I would definitely never used to describe what we publish. Here's the dictionary.com definition of "video": "a program, movie, or other visual media product featuring moving images, with or without audio, that is recorded and saved digitally or on videocassette." From Wikipedia: "Video is an electronic medium for the recording, copying, playback, broadcasting, and display of moving visual media."

    OK, hit higher to get more depth. That's almost like a "duh". The bigger question is how do I change my technique to get the additional height. Increase the height of the follow through? Raise the elbow? Hit more low to high? What?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  9 лет назад +1

      The biggest factor is angle of racquet face at contact, Michael. A change of a degree or two makes a big difference in the height of your resulting shot. The second biggest variable is one that you mentioned: how aggressively your racquet is accelerating upwards as it meets the ball.

    • @ashatola
      @ashatola 8 лет назад

      +dodododa Yes because there are a few ways to do it and he wants to know the most efficient. You can open the racquet face slightly but I'm thinking for control, more low to high and increased speed is better because then you get more kick off the bounce which is what you are really after.

    • @ashatola
      @ashatola 8 лет назад +1

      Not true, the racquet face should always be mostly vertical. Once you've established this as a constant, it's much easier to rotate your body more as a means of adding acceleration. It may seem odd but the faster you swing up, the more topspin you put on the ball and more topspin means the ball will come down and land in the court rather than fly long.
