I don't mind Red when he's written properly, Origins and the Adventure Manga did a great job at making him a believable character. But my problem is when people constantly shriek "Ash suks, Red is da best" and just look at his accomplishments in-game. The protagonist's job is to be a self-insert character, he's the best in that universe because you the player are controlling him.
