The reason why Japanese phone makers don't market in the US is because they want to directly retail a single model number to consumers, who then go and get any cell service they want to ... Selling on the US market means you have to sign contracts with the service providers, who each want an exclusive model number and feature set that makes it exclusive to their service, & then they lease the phones out as part of the service contract. The result of marketing in the US is that you have a higher production cost from having to produce like 10 different versions of the same phone after you get done adding up 3 major & 2 minor providers, plus each phone having 2 to 3 sizes of internal memory, and then after that you will get a lower profit margin due to bulk contracts being negotiated at a lower cost per unit ... It is easier and more cost effective for companies like sharp and sony to tell the US carriers to pound sand & stick to producing a single phone model that has got a dual sim slot & can natively run on any network (outside of the US), which they then market themselves without a middle man cutting into the profit margin.
@@holdenhodgdon3756 that's not necessarily correct anymore (about the US carrier skus), for instance you can get an unlocked phone straight from samsung that will work on most of the major US carriers, so theoretically a phone maker could release just one sku, though they usually don't cause its more profitable to have specific carrier versions to sell in stores.
@Sam Wallace true, but part of me thought that as the Internet started turning a bigger profit and life role, things would change. Apparently not though lol, Forums still have peak QoL
@Sam Wallace It's not supposed to be. This is something completely within their control and could be easily fixed with some manpower. But google is only a multi billion dollar company, they don't have the money for that.
Adversarial advertising network; The links still get clicks, and they can then see whichever variants work, and on whick kind of videos, using custom short links and redirects.
Lietz used to be a microscope and scientific equipment brand, and the mother company of Leica. Once they started making camera's, they named them Leica so the mother brand would not be associated with consumer goods
@@maxi531 yep, but they renamed everything to Leica. They feared making consumer cameras would damage their reps as a scientific company, but it was the other way around. The cameras were so popular Leica became the stronger brand. Was only somewhere the mid 80's. I still used metallograpic microscopes from Leitz at the uni. But no idea how old these were. When maintained, they are lasting forever
The lietz name was dropped almost completely by late 80s/early 90s , from even they're top end stereo zoom and the all conquering dmr series of microscopes. Those Dmr scopes were made like tanks and were the gold standard the labs I worked in back then...A lot of the Leica microscopes designs started as Wild heerbrug scopes that Leica fully took over in 89 ... I still sell Leica stereo zoom scopes when I can get them from lab closures... Every now and again I get hold of a good wild heerbrug stereo zoom and it's payday as the collectors will pay big money for them. The High Quality optics always retain a lot of value over the modern cheap chinesium copies.
It's almost like Sony phones, I think. Yes the pictures aren't as "bright" as the iPhone and Pixel, but the colors, contrast, and dynamic range feel a lot more natural, which I prefer. Looking at the pictures side-by-side-by-side made me think the other flagships done too much HDR. Though that said, for quick snaps for social media and whatnot, they're pretty much the best at doing so. Funny to think that RED was boasting about their phone and turned out to be a pile of garbage, OnePlus slapped Hasselblad name for nothing but marketing, and then Leica out of nowhere borrowing a Sharp's phone and made a phone for their fans with great performing camera.
What about RAWs? So, both the Pixel and iPhone give a lot more color information than the LEICA does. Also, both have a large sensor too, it's not like they got puny sensors. From what I can tell, the Leica is behind. To underexpose an image, yet still clip highlights, that's just not it for me. Whatever look I'm going for, I like either good auto mode, or do it myself. Leica so far, based solely on these sample pics, fails in both cases in my opinion. It gives you less room to tinker with the image since non-existent detail, well, does not exist with the Leica.
And, despite your name, you don't seem to know how RAW data works lol. if a RAW looks clipped, 99,9% of the time you're still able to bring in the information contained in those areas. None of these images presented were RAW, thus the "more color data" you experience for iPhone and Pixel, since they take several exposures and merge them to one image in addition to tons of post processing like sharpening and raising contrast. The flatter an image looks, the more "color data" it contains, but to a standard phone user they look bad because you still have to create the look you're going for in post, but gives you waaaay more possibilities in doing do.
A new shop near us specializes in Japanese and Korean market exclusive products, including phones and gadgets, and they do have these for $2200. I'm not sure if it's worth the markup, but I love that shops like that are opening in the USA.
Its worth it, the IGZO oled is better than amoled displays, most in the market use panels from Samsung anyway so you are getting an specific type of display.
Thing: yup Thing, Japan: Yup! Thing, Japan exclusive: COP COP COP Yanks will buy anything they can't get normally, especially when it's from Japan. It's silly
Something I really miss with newer phones is that they don't capture what I see anymore. The output photo is what it thinks I want, but what I want is to capture the memory of a moment. This is especially true with over saturated colours and modified lighting and white balance, like what we saw in the photo of the blue car. If I want a ideal looking photo, I can edit it later. Fortunately I can get most of it back with alternate apps that have minimal post processing, but this is really appealing. If anyone knows any smart phone brands that orient their cameras this way, I'd like to know.
@@steveholland1163 to be fair, thats possible with all semi modern smartphones. You might have to use a 3rd party app for it, but its possible none the less

Sony spends orders of magnitude more on marketing for their phones and it's still enough for them to continue making niche handsets catered to phone photography enthusiasts. All Leica has to do, really, is sell this globally. Even TheMrMobile was impressed by the camera quality, and it blows away what others are doing with their sensors. That said, night mode still needs work, and there are software bugs.
@@CataclysmZA Sony at this point looked like they made phones only for their enthusiast and not for sales. Like no normal person would buy a 2500$ xperia pro. But their enthusiast may.
Somebody's been watching MKBHD. From a technical standpoint this is a "1 inch" sensor. It is the same with the Full Frame contra Super 35. Or even 70 mm contra IMAX. They all use a specified portion of a predetermined surface area. Based in the historic standardised equivalents they are based on. They are derivative technical terms. So it should be called a 1 inch sensor as it is by technical specification classified as one. Hope this helps clarify it a little better.
@@jankubat2694 A "1 inch sensor" is a half inch sensor in reality. And even there there's some missing. My 35 mm sensor in my full frame camera is actually 36x24 mm.
@@Mp57navy And the point of what I said is, it's a technical term not indicative of the actual size. MKBHD made a video and everyone is now smart about photography standards of last 20 years. Same as APS-C has its size derived from the Kodak APS film standard, so when the first APS-C cameras first arrived, the sensors were actually smaller than the film equivalent they were derived from, hence full frame sensors are called so, as they cover the full 35 mm film frame. And everything above is a "lie" since no sensor in any camera actually captures the full lens circle. And the rabbit hole goes even deeper.
My old 1020 still takes better pictures than my iPhone 12. RAW with zero processing will always be infinitely more valuable to me than the insane amounts of AI OEMs are investing in. Not to mention having a two stage shutter, OIS, an actual xenon flash and shutter in 2013.
@@YearsOfLeadPoisoning I loved the 1020 but what you're saying is just straight up bullshit. Also iPhones as well as most android Smartphones are still able to take RAW pictures...
@@MikeMessiah Not at all. If you want an image that was taken from a camera, the 1020 destroys anything by miles. I The metric people are accustomed to is photos that look like they've already been through Lightroom, sharpened, and with added HDR. That's not "better", it's just ensured I can't get images the way I want them. Someone else has made all those decisions. That's the exact opposite of what makes a good camera.
The fact that Leica decided not to put manual mode in 1" sensor smarphone is a real bummer. They wated people to focus on picture they are taking but instead made fully automatic compact camera with smarphone features. Some may disagree but when you are taking a photo with full manual controls you focus more on the picturetaking process. With manual mode this would probably be a great astrophotography camera...
There is a full manual controls. Manual controls are great on this device specially in the indoors and people/pets, but outdoors and night time the auto is pretty great.
@@netherquark it is not that simple, open camera supports functions such as manual ISO and exposition compensation, it's more like Program mode rather than Manual, you can't manually set you shutter speed or aperture (but this phone probably doesn't have mechanical aperture)
4:25 that's really cool! It's a 'feature' of many range finders where the viewfinder is slightly wider. Fun that they implemented that digitally. It helps with lining up shots with lots of movement. Greatly appreciated by street photographers.
I think what Brandon is trying to describe here is the _legendary_ Leica Pop®! I have a handful of Leica cameras and they all have the pop. They’re also remarkably consistent performers. I’ve done countless comparisons with them against Canon 7D and Sony a7 MkII cameras & lens and no other camera provides that incredibly hard-to-describe Leica Pop. I’ve even printed large format prints of untouched photos on my Canon PIXMA PRO-100 that were taken with all 3 cameras and most “civilians” prefer the Leica photos. This phone looks incredible! It’s definitely a Leica phone, unlike the Huawei phones that Leica’s been providing cameras for over the past few years. The bare aluminum, rounded body and of course, an aluminum lens cover very similar to those for the Leica DLUX series of cameras. I’m SOOO pleased that Leica chose top tier hardware & features for their very first Leica-branded smartphone. It might seem pricey by today’s standards, but it looks like a typical, ultra high quality Leica product. Sincere congratulations, Leica! Leica fanboys like me will likely purchase one just to have the first Leica smartphone. It doesn’t look like it will too painful with all the features this phone offers.
If you want to use data, you should set the APN first. I use couple phones from japan (4 exactly) 1 Aquos R2 and 3 Aquos Zeta for about 3 years I guess, and it's still good. I use it for daily use and capturing photos and videos.
It was so important to hear the difference in opinion regarding the different photos. Yes, the Pixel and iPhone are the ones more pleasing to the average consumer, but the Lieca’s the one a photographer would want to edit. That’s the kind of input that separates a video like this from all the other camera tests. Very cool.

I bought a Sony Xperia 3 in Aug, just for Sony Camera experience. For photographers its a question of do you want to take photo of what you see or do you want computational photo which is why I picked Sony over Iphone and Pixel. The best camera you have is the one you have with you. I always have a smartphone, so that camera must be my backup. Thank You for your photographer's review.

Why not buy an old iphone or Samsung? Both have better pictures and are also more fast when taking pictures. There are videos online. Sony Xperia RAW mode vs iPhone raw mode. Sony RAW mode lost against iPhone Auto mode. Sony RAW also lost against iPhone RAW. Don't be a fool and get tricked. All the manual control on Sony, you have also on iPhone and Samsung. And software? Ever used a DSLR from Sony? Sony uses software too to make images look good!! Don't be a fool. Sony does it. Then why cry when others do it? Don't scam yourself lmao.
@@adriancandelario2902 Ever tried professional photography? We generally composite images. So, take multiple pictures, different exposures. Then stitch together in photoshop. Smartphones do that with automode. Professionals do it manually ;) When doing manually, you got more options. But iPhone RAW is very amazing too. Lots of options there to work with. Also, in some situations a smartphone can not be used. So you NEED a big camera. Like with zoom, portrait pictures but from a slight distance. Many shots like that, can NOT be made with a smartphone. But close-ups, smartphone is perfect. Most can't tell the difference between smartphone and DSLR ;)
the detail is pretty crazy, at 8:55 if you look at the small text next to the X9 in the top left you can see that the leica really catches way more higher rez detail in the shots, while in the iphone its all just postprocess sharpness that makes it readable.

an interesting view on 9:36. The pixel and the iPhone does take great details of the snow and the leaves, but then the Leica shows how you would see the snow and leaves in real life, with the bokeh and everything. It's somehow very true-to-life and cinematic at the same time. Feels like a pic you'd take with your actual Leica camera, it feels like it tells a story.
IGZO Oled is probably the best oled for phones in the market at the moment (yeah, better than amoled), I think only QDOled is better but that is not on phones at the moment.
NO it's most likely not. Sharp is often really talking bullshit about their specs. I remember seeing stuff live on IFA like a 1280x720p 7" screen and they claim it's 326ppi which is just in fact wrong. This display most likely will never be able to reach 2000 nits - at least on actual usable level. Just like many Android phones which can only reach their max brightness on a super tiny spot at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if those 2000 nits only work on literally like one pixel at a time. And btw basically ALL OLED displays are "AMOLED". AM stands for active matrix which just is a thing on all OLED screens.
@@Raja995mh33 AMOLED is about the active matrix, but every manufacturer does it differently (an the naming of "amoled" us own by Samsung for their specific method of doing it), IGZO IS BETTER than what Samsung does for their phones and panels for other OEMs. Seriously, search a little what IGZO is and you'll understand why is so great! Man, all I want from phone photos, is to have true-to-life colours. This really draw me in. It's just a pitty there are so few manufacturers who would take this into a count.
Hey, future-dweller here, rocking it on November 3, 2023, from the heart of East Africa! Guess what? I scored this phone for a mere $200, fresh out of the local store just a fortnight ago. It's been quite the adventure. To top it off, it casually strolled up to Android 13, like it was sipping a cup of tea. This phone is so cool; it's practically become my new BFF, and we're inseparable!
Great video as always! Love to have a photographer POV regarding these type of phones. Would have been nice to for a comparison between this and the Sony Xperia Pro-I. Also found lacking the no mention of Laica working previously smartphones brands like Huawei previously and how this obviously differs from those forays
not the Xperia. Xperia is a big scam. They hardware cropped into the sensor. The actual used sensorsize for pictures & video is less than the iPhone's sensorsize. You can tell by how iPhone and Samsung has more natural blur than the Xperia. You can look up the Xperia scam online too. It really is a 1" sensor, but they use only a part of it. It's a scam :(
@@Samosayummyyay its not. I have clarified it more in-depth in a different comment of yours, but it helps with optical image stabilisation, low light capabilities and data speed. There is a reasoning behind it, and you can look it up because Sony is open about it
My only gripe here is that you missed low light comparisons with flagship phones. It's a shame that some of the best phones out there are Asian and not released in the NA markets due to our stupid regulations.
I remember having a similar data issue when I visited family in the States in 2018. I had an Oppo phone at the time, bought in Australia (where I live) but, at the time at least, Oppo didn't operate in North America. My uncle gave me a SIM to use in case I needed it; calls worked fine but I was only able to get an EDGE signal with my data. No issues with the SIM in other phones (non-Oppo) and never had any issues with Australian SIMs in the Oppo. Was fascinating
Damn!! The photos were very realistic! The bokeh on the video was also very good!!! Hope leica makes more phones with such cameras at a more affordable price in more regions!
I very much preferred the leica shots. It really gave me the feeling of "film" that my iphone doesn't. Great cameras to be sure, just different aesthetics.
I wonder what happens if you combine a sensor like this with some lightweight image processing. Would it lose all is nuance, or could we hit the best of both worlds?
Thanks to your enthusiasm for cameras and the whole gpu shortage instead of buying and building a pc I chose to buy a canon EOS rebel sl3 and I love this new hobby, sure wish I had more time to travel across my state to take pictures
It's hard to tell if I would think differently not looking through a youtube video, but to me the Leica really seems to have some issues with fringing as it transitions from focus to blur. To me that focus fall-off is really not great looking, and it makes the image looks much less sharp than it is. it gives the impression of there being motion blur on still objects. I don't mind the less processed image but it really felt like there was a loss of detail in comparison. I wish we could see unprocessed iphone/pixel images, and im sure raw stills out of the Leica are better, but it feels to me like a lot of the post proccessing I would end up doing on the leica photos would be to bring them to looking more like the iphone, and fighting that softness. I do think google has really messed up withthe pixel this year tho, that shadow lifting looks terrible.
agreed 100% You are spot on! That motion blur feeling is actually terrible. Digital photography will never be the same a film photography. Personally I like Large Format the most.
As a semi pro photographer I strongly disagree. What you mistakenly call "motion blur" is simply a very shallow depth of field and is a much more natural and realistic looking image. Overly sharpened, overly processed image quality is why I and many others very much dislike cell phones for photography. I do agree it may appear a bit softer but sharpness really isn't everything in photography.
I just found out from MKBHD that a 1" sensor is not really 1" in size in anyway, otherwise it is going to be as big as a DSLR sensor! It's only as big as something that fits inside a vacuum tube whose diameter is 1 inch!! I've never felt so deceived in my entire life!!!
@@edwardallenthree yeah I know that and that kinda makes this worse as people were likely deceived for much longer! All the inch based sensor sizes are based on this archaic concept and I've simply assumed they mean what they say on paper. I'm sure most of us thought the same. 1/2.55" sensor is not 1/2.55" in any dimension. It's less than a centimeter in both dimensions!
I feel the exact same while using my Xperia. If you want creative photography, these are the phones. Normal smartphones added so much post processing, the image is definitely pleasing but nothing much you can do as a photographer
does Japan keep doing Japan-only exclusives to give the USA and other Western countries the big middle finger as they laugh? lol WTF?!?!? 1TB option that works?!?!?!! I guess it's not ready for 'Murica yet. I hope there's a future release of newer models in the USA :)

I think that's the first review of the phone that doesn't trash talk the camera I still remember my old Sony z3 everybody talked trash about the camera but I loved it
I am extremely disappointed with Google's. They always went for natural look and now they are chasing trends. They used to set trends in computational photography.
this time as a photographer i accualy disagree with brandon about the phone... i think that a phone with that cost for a gemic and a brand name is kaind of usless. the sony eco system is much more giving and better cost for the money. and if you want to get Leica "feel" you can just edit it in photoshop or lightroom with a correct preset.
I purchased the Sharp Aquos R6 and while the camera's computational software is lacking, if you know what you are doing behind the camera(and with editing), these phones can produce unbelievable images. The same is to be said by pairing these phones with a 3rd party filming app(like Filmic or Protake), where shooting in a flat color profile will yield video quality that just CANNOT be seen on any other smartphone right now. Also had a couple issues with the SIM initially, but got it all figured out with calls and data(region: USA)!
Damn, these Leica shots look really good. The depth of field is so damn good. Also it looks like it had some sort of film grain sometimes. Also crazy hefty screen specs.
The lines are replicating the looks of the rangefinder in the Leica M-cameras. The lines are the different frames in the rangefinder for the different focal lengths as the rangefinder-glass is the same size and zoom regardless of the focal length.
After hearing more about the Xperia-I not using the full 1 inch it's not actually a bad thing. You still get the benefit of that sensor (as opposed to using a smaller one), even while using a smaller part of it. Brandon please look into this. Lenses should get better on phones and we'll have more options.
I'm really surprised that the number plates of staff cars weren't blurred in the demonstration section. Not exactly a company inviting real controversy but with millions of eyes... makes me wonder if this was a mistake due to the normally strong privacy stance LMG takes?
Something that would help me as a viewer with no photo experience would be for you to take one of the Lecia photos, and manually edit it to something closer to the iphone/pixel versions. Like the lighting or color intensity.
When I compare the 3 photos with pixel, iphone and the leica. The leica one feels natural and the right focus makes it fell like what your eyes see. While the pixel and iphone feel like it brute forces the photos with post processing and sometimes changes how you see the images.
Note: We missed highlighting is that the Leitz uses Qualcomm's largest fingerprint sonic sensor so you can get access to your phone more accessible, and the camera app we used is the Leitz Looks mode that produces great Bokeh powered by Qualcomm's AI engine, which is still in beta.

Lietz used to be a microscope and scientific equipment brand, and the mother company of Leica. Once they started making camera's, they named them Leica so the mother brand would not be associated with consumer goods
These companies still exist, I think there are 4 or 5 different Leica companies from Lenze production to medicine stuff and manufacturing stuff
Even the $100-500k surgical microscopes are labeled Leica now, they compete directly with Zeiss.
I love that you said "borrowing", made it sound so much more like Stealing to me XDD
@@Samosayummyyay who asked you to purchase?
And, despite your name, you don't seem to know how RAW data works lol. if a RAW looks clipped, 99,9% of the time you're still able to bring in the information contained in those areas. None of these images presented were RAW, thus the "more color data" you experience for iPhone and Pixel, since they take several exposures and merge them to one image in addition to tons of post processing like sharpening and raising contrast.
The flatter an image looks, the more "color data" it contains, but to a standard phone user they look bad because you still have to create the look you're going for in post, but gives you waaaay more possibilities in doing do.

Sony spends orders of magnitude more on marketing for their phones and it's still enough for them to continue making niche handsets catered to phone photography enthusiasts. Putting my newfound knowledge to work, it should be called a 1.0-type sensor :D
Looks like we have a MKBHD follower here
Somebody's been watching MKBHD.
It's a camcorder sensor essentially
The blur on the Leica is gradual based on distance from the foreground which is how bokeh should be. I'm just really impressed with this camera.
The design reminds me of the Nokia Lumia phones, the cylindrical look, the huge circular camera bump..
My old 1020 still takes better pictures than my iPhone 12. RAW with zero processing will always be infinitely more valuable to me than the insane amounts of AI OEMs are investing in.
Not to mention having a two stage shutter, OIS, an actual xenon flash and shutter in 2013.

Very cool.
Leika's image are much closer to a real camera feel. I prefer the natural colors of Leika to the overexposed / saturated look of iPhone and Pixel.

an interesting view on 9:36.

Your argument of "might be" is subjective since you cannot proved your point, but we'll see hopefully in a comparison.

Great video as always! Love to have a photographer POV regarding these type of phones. Would have been nice to for a comparison between this and the Sony Xperia Pro-I. Also found lacking the no mention of Laica working previously smartphones brands like Huawei previously and how this obviously differs from those forays
I really like the stills it takes. Everything looks organic and reminds me of what pictures looked like before the digital revolution.
I wish more phone manufacturers would focus on having 1 great camera instead of 1 good + x "meh" cameras on each of the new phones.

Definitely would like a 1 inch type sensor shoot out, with the Xperia, Leica and maybe like a rx100 to test the difference.
not the Xperia.
There is a reasoning behind it, and you can look it up because Sony is open about it
Thanks for the video. Once I saw the photos, I immediately made the decision that this phone camera is not what I wanted.
My only gripe here is that you missed low light comparisons with flagship phones. It's a shame that some of the best phones out there are Asian and not released in the NA markets due to our stupid regulations.
europe too bro,......
I was a little more impressed by the Sony. It had awesome looking video as well as photos.
the low contrast look is real clean and aesthetic
Probably region locked because they didn't want to bother with dealing with additional network bands for a niche group of foreign buyers.
LOL, I love that the Teslas back-in together and the hot hatches park straight-in together.
I wonder what happens if you combine a sensor like this with some lightweight image processing. Would it lose all is nuance, or could we hit the best of both worlds?
I think that's what Sony's doing with the Pro-I
Thanks to your enthusiasm for cameras and the whole gpu shortage instead of buying and building a pc I chose to buy a canon EOS rebel sl3 and I love this new hobby, sure wish I had more time to travel across my state to take pictures
240hz OLED? That deserved more then 1 second of the video, don't know a single phone with that kind of screen.
But it's been like that for decades... A 1 in sensor is 12x9 mm, always has been, always will be.
I had to scroll to far to find this comment.
@@edwardallenthree yeah I know that and that kinda makes this worse as people were likely deceived for much longer! All the inch based sensor sizes are based on this archaic concept and I've simply assumed they mean what they say on paper. They are one of the best concerts, you can not go but just seeing them from the screen, I know it was surprising
💗❤️💌💘
I think that's the first review of the phone that doesn't trash talk the camera
I still remember my old Sony z3 everybody talked trash about the camera but I loved it
I am extremely disappointed with Google's. They always went for natural look and now they are chasing trends. They used to set trends in computational photography.
agree. The Pixel 6 way over processes photos
Would love if the next phone comes to the US. Would definitely consider buying one of these. Love the look of the photos.
this time as a photographer i accualy disagree with brandon about the phone... i think that a phone with that cost for a gemic and a brand name is kaind of usless. the sony eco system is much more giving and better cost for the money. and if you want to get Leica "feel" you can just edit it in photoshop or lightroom with a correct preset.
The iPhone is like more versatile for social media but the Leica just looks like a traditional camera. Really like those photos.
Dude the colours on the Leica shots especially the car are sooooooo much better than the pixel and iPhone damn
Wow this phone looks super classy
I love the sharp corners on this phone and the who look of it, reminds me of the Note
I really like this rough sides, sillicone-like back and flat top and bottom design.
Damn, these Leica shots look really good. The depth of field is so damn good. Also it looks like it had some sort of film grain sometimes. Also crazy hefty screen specs.
The lines are replicating the looks of the rangefinder in the Leica M-cameras. The lines are the different frames in the rangefinder for the different focal lengths as the rangefinder-glass is the same size and zoom regardless of the focal length.
gorgeous phone
After hearing more about the Xperia-I not using the full 1 inch it's not actually a bad thing. You still get the benefit of that sensor (as opposed to using a smaller one), even while using a smaller part of it. Brandon please look into this. Lenses should get better on phones and we'll have more options.
Yay! Alex has the most photogenic car!
That iphone is amazing. Class leading
The Highlight Rolloff on the bike photo looks really impressive
Alex and I both have a Cornflower Blue GTI!! It really is an amazing color for pictures.
