I always found the casting for this quite interesting. They got the Rock and Karen Gillan for their stunt ability (physicality of the roles) with the addition of stunt doubles. They got Kevin Hart and Jack Black for their comedic chops and ad lib ability. The four made a wild and entertaining film - about as good as the original as Robin Williams had a wit that is difficult to match.
I think you're severely underestimating the Rock here. It's actually kind of ridiculous how good he is as an actor, especially where comedy is concerned. Definitely not the kind of thing you'd expect from a guy that size, but it works.
