Thankyou as always Rob, yep whole different ball game with damp wood. I still reckon most of us would die if faced with pouring rain,low temps and high winds and only had a knife and ferro rod. Skill and knowledge still outclass pricey equipment. Must tell you, that F1 X in elmax of mine which has had no use and only been stropped chipped near the start of the belly just batoning 6 or 7 splits of not particularly hard wood not one but 2 nicks in the blade. I smashed the shit out of my Mora stainless and robust with no damage, so as far as I am concerned I wasted 230 quid , and yes hate the handle even more now I used it a bit. You are an honest guy and when you show us something we know we get the real deal warts and all. Keep doing your thing, I always learn a little something from you cheers

Hi Rob, you probably know this already, being such a sharp guy - just heat the rod loop Kydex with a bit of hot air (carefully), insert proper sized ferrorod, and let it cool. Wil fit perfectly after that. Thanks for all your videos, I enjoy them always.
I make kydex sheaths, some people aren't practical and wouldn't think of this or be to scared to mess with it. You obviously have plenty of sense my friend.

For my ferro rod striker I took a hacksaw blade and cut it down to about 3 inches long then attached it to my apocalypse sheath by running one of the screws that holds the kydex ferro rod holder through the hole in the hacksaw blade. You can turn it to strike your ferro rod without taking it off the sheath. If you lose your striker then that would mean you lost your ferro rod as well.
As usual this was a very informative and thorough video and helped me a great deal with fire building in damp conditions, something I have been struggling with lately. I always find your videos enjoyable to watch and for some reason stress reducing which I greatly appreciate. Please keep the great videos coming!
Your last little bit of wisdom there was spot on! But then I am a firm believer that a knife is a knife and there is actually no such thing as a "survival" knife in reality.
Another great review, really like the thumb ramp..... Just shows that you need to carry a strop when out in the woods for a long time...n Good idea to add the extras to the sheath rather than in a tube handle which compromises the blade integrity 👍👍
Can't tell you as I don't have the TRC knife, but it looks really nice, I think it'll be down to which knife do you prefer the look of, both are excellent companies.

I have the same knife. I've found that a shallower angle against the spine throws decent sparks. Not as good as a 90* flat spine, but more than acceptable.

It probably counts as natural tinder now 😅 I was thinking, would the finger notch choil scrape? I'm with you 100%, sharp spines should be ubiquitous - so many bushcraft uses, I just dont understand why they are left off......round the spine from the handle for an inch for carving comfort, the rest of the spine sharp sharp sharp. Just back from the four day march in Nijmegen and a week of Covid and now found your new video with my favorite knife (mine in apocalyptic finish as I need a non reflective tool). Agree on scraping fatwood. In fact, I would not use any portion of the cutting edge for doing that as the belly point is needed for skinning animals or fine cutting of material (e.g. fabric, leather). A truly well made knife. Can anybody say they notice a big difference in real world use with "super steels?" Just curious. I think I'm over it, I've been using a sog stout flk and have been blown away. Other than the frame lock being a tad tough to get to on the close it's one of my too 5 knives and it cryo treated d2. Not sure if they use cpm d2 and don't specify but I'm pretty sure it's just ingot form d2.
Drawing that knife up in the triangle of death not safe you were feathering wood up between your legs you’ve got major arteries in that part of your legs a slip of a wet knife out of the hand could be fatal given the rural location, probably best to find an alternative way of doing that with a larger piece of wood. Otherwise a good solid video with spot on advice.
It seems to be well made, except for the choil which only removes useful edge and adds nothing to the utility of the knife. Thanks for bringing me along again. :)
That choil is perfect. Makes the knife great for heavy duty work (chopping) while allowing fineer knifework as you get tight on the blade with that choil. Perfect setup.
The TRC Apocalypse is my favourite knife, but mine is even worse at fire lighting. It has the brown Apocalypse finish. If I was to light a fire I would bring something else to spark.

I think Rambo or something like that should carry in movies more knife like this. Seems very functional, tactical, and the bowie vibe is strong. Although personally these more tactical/military style knives are not my thing really

Its great, but not so in long term hikes just because of size. I have carried my pack very regularly in the woods, and just in town, and it just shows some wear nothing Major over years of use. I hope this serves you well on your journeys.

Hi Rob been a while just thought I'd mention that in the dbk video about this knife they were able to scrape the ferro rod with the rounded spine I assume you know this and your knife is different as there handmade but just thought I'd mention it
These knives make absolutely no sense to me. Beyond the outrageous price. The choice of steel makes no sense for a knife that size. Who goes to the woods with a knife that costs that much. I could buy a whole outdoor setup for the price of that knife. Plus still have money to spend. I personally prefer toughness over edge retention. Don't want a knife that takes hours to put a edge on. For some reason seems everyone pushes these high dollar knives that really don't do anything a good budget knife won't do.
@@RobEvansWoodsman don't get me wrong nothing wrong with collecting something if you really like it. But to me knives are tools (tools I like) but a tool. Plus I guess it's my upbringing but I love when something cheap beats something expensive. It was a beautiful knife.

I agree, I was shocked when I saw the price. But like with watches there is no upper limit to the price of knives, however the law of diminishing returns applies, i.e. this knife is not 10x as good as a knife a tenth of the price. For a real good no-nonsense ''apocalypse'' knife i.e. a honking great full tang prybar which can easily be sharpened to a wicked edge, check out the Linder Guide in 420 steel. It's only £19. At the moment they're out of stock at Heinnie but they are listed still so they should restock them at some point in the future.
@@simonh6371 my main thing with that knife is the steel choice. Elmax is not a tough steel. It's OK on a folder or a edc knife. But a survival knife should be tough more then edge retention. But fancy names gets fancy prices. I believe the people that buy these knives don't really use them.
The worst conditions make the best tutorials; but they sure do drain your funny bone, don't they? Impressive sheath, impressive edge; it's a shame to fall short on other, equally important abilities. I noticed right off, that the handle would probably not work well in my hand. You didn't mention it, so I assume it worked well with yours. I too was thinking Falkniven all through the vid, and in the end, I guess we were all thinking the same thing. Who knows, maybe someone from TRC R&D sees this and makes some changes; stranger things have happened. Thanks Rob; a fine way to wind down the weekend. :D 🪓🗡🪚

With regard to fire making , l always carry Zip individually wrapped firelighting cubes and a couple of BIC lighters . These never fail . Cheers

That's a good idea.
Some hacksaw blades will give you a spark from flint, but not many.

The blade (except for the choil) is almost identical in style to the Fallkniven S1, which is not a complaint because it's one my favorite designs.

There's always a new Super steel that's better than the last one, the jumps are only really noticeable to nerds that cut rope and paper.

The GAK is a relatively new pocket knife for me, I've been carrying a modified Victorinox huntsman for a while.
Can't believe you actually liked a knife without a skandi grind. Was waiting for it, but nothing. There must be something in the water over there...🙂

I agree with you but I had to try it out, I sold it straight away and bought something else, but I did like it.
@@RobEvansWoodsman don't get me wrong nothing wrong with collecting something if you really like it. But to me knives are tools (tools I like) but a tool. Plus I guess it's my upbringing but I love when something cheap beats something expensive.

@@richardhenry1969Never come across anything cheap that beats a more expensive alternative especially in bushcraft. Like my Gran used to say "buy cheap buy twice".
I agree, I was shocked when I saw the price. But like with watches there is no upper limit to the price of knives, however the law of diminishing returns applies, i.e. this knife is not 10x as good as a knife a tenth of the price. For a real good no-nonsense ''apocalypse'' knife i.e. a honking great full tang prybar which can easily be sharpened to a wicked edge, check out the Linder Guide in 420 steel. It's only £19. At the moment they're out of stock at Heinnie but they are listed still so they should restock them at some point in the future.
@@simonh6371 my main thing with that knife is the steel choice. Elmax is not a tough steel. It's OK on a folder or a edc knife. But a survival knife should be tough more then edge retention.
But fancy names gets fancy prices. I believe the people that buy these knives don't really use them.
The worst conditions make the best tutorials; but they sure do drain your funny bone, don't they? Impressive sheath, impressive edge; it's a shame to fall short on other, equally important abilities. I noticed right off, that the handle would probably not work well in my hand. You didn't mention it, so I assume it worked well with yours. I too was thinking Falkniven all through the vid, and in the end, I guess we were all thinking the same thing. Who knows, maybe someone from TRC R&D sees this and makes some changes; stranger things have happened. Thanks Rob; a fine way to wind down the weekend. :D 🪓🗡🪚
