Welcome to The Binge Eating Therapist, where Sarah, a former binge eater turned psychotherapist, shares her personal insights on overcoming binge eating. In this candid video, Sarah reflects on her own recovery journey and the pivotal question of "why me?" She explores how she managed to break free from binge eating when so many others continue to struggle.
Sarah's journey wasn't a simple, linear process of recognizing her issues and immediately overcoming them. Instead, it was marked by profound resistance and gradual realizations. She emphasizes the importance of addressing binge eating through a psychological and emotional lens, suggesting that this inner transformation is essential before behavioral change can occur.
The heart of her transformation was a shift in self-perception. Sarah explains how she learned to appreciate herself, regardless of her eating behaviors. This transformation is based on the concept of an "unconditioned self," distinct from the conditioned self shaped by life experiences, upbringing, and societal pressures.
She delves into how meditation played a pivotal role in her journey, enabling her to experience herself beyond her conditioning. Meditation allowed her to glimpse moments of peace and clarity, even on days when she had binged. Sarah further discusses the importance of experiencing oneself without the noise and chaos that often surrounds binge eating.
Sarah's video challenges the traditional notion of quick fixes or actionable steps for recovery. She shares her personal experience and emphasizes the need to go deeper and reflect on our relationship with ourselves. Recovery is not just about changing behavior but also about transforming one's relationship with self and developing self-compassion.
While this video may not offer quick solutions, it provides valuable insights into the emotional and psychological aspects of recovery. If you're struggling with binge eating or seeking a deeper understanding of the journey to recovery, Sarah's reflections offer a different perspective.
For those interested in a transformative retreat experience, Sarah mentions the "Hero's Journey Retreat" in the UK, which played a pivotal role in her self-discovery. More info here: www.heros-journey.co.uk/

We love this! Talking about an ED as a conditioned experience rather than an identity.
Hope this will help others find relief as well!

Thanks Sarah. You’re so right, I distract myself so much (for various reasons) that I rarely fully connect with myself xx

This was a really helpful video. Thanks for sharing it & for your vulnerability. I feel like I'm in a catch-22 situation where I hate myself due to my binge eating & addiction problems but loving myself is needed to make peace with & overcome them. Just continuing on hating myself isn't the answer, so I'll have to learn to love myself. I feel like often people give the advice of "you should love yourself" without giving any practical advice on how to do so, so it was helpful that you explained that you learned to do so through meditation & stillness.

And compassion! Just having some compassion for the fact we are human beings that get stuck in self-destructive cycles and that we are often inconsistent and conflicted.

Brilliant advice, Sarah. Thank you so much for how authentically you share your own personal journey and your invaluable insights. I’m still battling binge eating ( having only recently even accepted that this is what I do) having read every book I can find and tried every ‘diet’ out there. I think your video resonated with me because it speaks to looking inwardly with compassion- which, it turns out, can be so much harder than any external work. Finding yourself and then loving yourself - who’d have thought that this could be so hard? Anyway, it’s a journey I’m on, and all the more motivated by your regular posts. Please keep them coming! Thank you again.

I wasn't able to watch this until after I made my recent FB comments that you praised so highly. THIS is exactly what I was trying to say. Until I shifted my thinking about myself first, I didn't feel any real internal movement forward. There is a saying in AA that said "fake it until you make it" I understood the words, but I really "get" it now. I pretended I cared about me, I said the words. I affirm myself and accept myself in the moment, and I have begun to feel it as real. I really appreciate the take on things you have here about this is all from our conditioning not our born identity. That my ED was a case of nurture (not necessarily just by family either), not nature. Which means to me that it can be changed and isn't a character defect. Thank you Sarah!

life changing video sarah. my mom is into a lot of harmful conspiracy theories and i've had a hard time with my own spirituality, because i can only think about her and how bad things are going. my friends gave me a tip last week about that one joe dispensa book, but i had a hard time getting into it because i know that my mom loves him too. but now i'll give it a go again and try to think that i can take the good stuff from it, i don't have to hear or believe everything he's saying. thank you sarah

    I struggled with relapse.
Stopped purging and binging for over 20 years, then bad events in my life made me do it again 😩
Now in the last 4 years I kept getting relapses. Stopped the binge for 6 months, then relapsed. Stopped for 3 months then relapsed.
I really want to stop this problem for good as I am older now in my 40s.
All my life, I struggled with weight and self image. I was being bullied, in my teenage years I was being called fatty. I have to learn to LOVE myself more.
I’m so critical of my own body image.
It’s sad really to think I ve to been slim to feel at my best. I have put on 1 stone in the last 4 yrs due to hormonal changes in my body , wanting to lose weight has also triggered this bad eating disorder 😩
I must keep trying. Can’t give up on me! You can do it…somehow 😂

Hi sarah, thank you for your video. I used to b/p up to 4 times aday, and thinges have improved immensely. But i still get in b/p behaviour maybe 5 times a month, i am afraid it is gonna get worse again. Would you say i am on the right way or not?

    • @TheBingeEatingTherapist
      @TheBingeEatingTherapist  6 месяцев назад +1

Going from 4x a day to 5x a month certainly sounds like a significant improvement ❤ Just remember that recovery is not always linear so if it does increase in frequency, it doesn't mean you are failing. Get clear on the things that are helpful for you at reducing B/P episodes and practice these intentionally. Even making sure you create clear memories of what B/P free days feel like so you have a clear picture of what you are trying to create if things get rocky again.
Good luck my friend, you got this xx
