These guys are a phenomenal group with such an original sound and deserve far more credit as musicians.....been a fan a long time now and every track is a masterpiece
E is a very creative song writer, but keeps it simple at the same time. I was too involved with Smashing Pumpkins and nirvana back in the 90's to really get into the Eels. I'm actually glad I waited, because I can relate to his messages more today.
I was pretty into Eels during my mid-late teens (although it was a case of really liking some songs, not being able to stand others) to the point of buying the 6 studio albums from Beautiful Freak - Blinking Lights, but I ended up drifting away from them... Only to find up those CDs yesterday. Figured I'd stick one on for the hell of it, then realised that actually... He's a great lyricist, and as you say, writes deceptively simple songs which are more than they seem at first look.
Chris Bianco I got into the eels just as the pumpkins were running out of steam, 97/98. Novacain for the soul was on the radio at 3am. I was instantly hooked.
E writes all of his songs a certain way for a reason. His instruments and lyrics are comparable to literary devices used by writers like Tolstoy, Dickens, Thoreau... Each chord, each "voice" is meant to produce a certain tone and tie back into a uniform thematic element, the same way symbolism is used in writing. Every work of art has a message and has to be analyzed from that. Souljacker 1&2: very symbolic. Don't we all have something that is a Souljacker? Something that threatens to crush us?
Listen to the SOUL and you'll even hear Bo Diddley. It's too much spirit for the membrane to retain, but just let go 'cause Souljacker rolls with the force of the BO, and it doesn't let GO. Rock on Eels and Rock on Bo.
12 years holy crap..I'm so glad I discovered this band which was surprisingly from the Nicolas cage film Drive Angry. Then discovered they did a song in Shrek "Need some sleep"
@fortminor85 i saw this song in the Hot Fuzz soundtrack but i dont remember this song been in the movie maybe i need to watch the movie agan its been a wile : \
Look for the book by "E"... it telling much about the background. i like the german version, its not my favorite book but a good support to go to eels live ;)

@dilligaf1942 lol you just described E. And E does work with others, but the bandmates don't write. They are mainly just touring artists for a short time because E hires them. E writes everything, and when he collaborates, it's usually with producers and for a short time, string conductors. Tom isn't the only one who writes on the albums for AVA. David writes a lot too, mainly the instrumentals. But, yes. It is true that Tom is the powerhouse of AVA's sucess and lol yes ik this is a long reply
@dilligaf1942 no man, look up eels biography. everybody else in it is mostly touring. E, the leader, writes the material, and occasionally writes with producers and many string conductors.
So you have to appreciate the raw dischord and mayhem of Part 1 in comparison to the gentle, repetitive mantra of Part 2. Two opposing viewpoints that encompass a well-rounded conflict that, in the end, express what we often feel in our lives, opposition in all things, as E saw in the viewpoints of the murderer and his victims. He reiterated in Pt 2 how even if one was defeated by their Souljacker, it did not take away who they were as a person unless they allowed it to.
Escuché esta rolita en el 2004, se me quedó pero nunca puse importancia en el nombre de pista o artista, en fin, hasta ahora en 2016 voy descubriendola
One of the greatest and underrated rock'n'roll songs in history

For me this is the best song by the Eels, seeing them do it live is amazing, the feed back break, wow. Without doubt the best band of the 90s
E is a very creative song writer, but keeps it simple at the same time. I was too involved with Smashing Pumpkins and nirvana back in the 90's to really get into the Eels. I'm actually glad I waited, because I can relate to his messages more today.

Watching and listening to.this piece at this moment, perfect.
