Great paint for Gelli printing

- I was curious about Amsterdam Acrylic Paints and how well they work for gelli printing. It took me a while to get the right amount of paint but I loved the buttery quality of the paint. The colors took me a little out of my comfort zone. But that is what I need sometimes. I made some interesting discoveries and enjoyed the process.
😎 This is the kit I purchased, just to get me started without a huge investment.

I am just getting started on my gelli plate art. I’m loving it. All I have in my stash are cheap acrylic paints. I’m learning all there is to know about the different paints.
With the cheap acrylics I noticed that if it's an opaque paint it can work pretty good. I recently tried dollar store paint. I may do a video on that.
I love Amsterdam paints on my Gelli plate!!
Ps my favorite paper is deli paper for the transparency and regular printer paper. I use my papers for collage, mixed media, earring that I make, and other things💜
I also use deli paper but haven't posted any videos on it. Thanks for sharing how you use your papers.
I’ve been using whatever type of paint. I even tried kids finger paint. Looks like I need to upgrade my paint. Maybe I’ll have better results
Awesome job❤ awesome demonstration. But I’m still having trouble if I don’t pull it right away. 😊
What kind of trouble? Is the paper tearing? How much paint are you using and what kind of paint?
Yes. My paper tears and sticks to the plate of if I don’t rub it one time and pull right away. My plate was ordered from Amazon but did not come with a protective sleeve. I wonder if it’s damaged?🧐 well either way I’m a new artist and more than likely it’s user error 😏
Just stopping this - after you used the yellow and purple and got brown - to say that purple and yellow are complementary colours, and complementary colours always combine to form brown. So the same for blue and orange, and red and green. Which is why complementary colours are often used in painting skin tones. I also find that if you rub your fingers between the spaces of the stencil, you pick up more of the paint if you don't want too much left in between for the ghost print. That said, I really like how your ghost prints came out with the extra colour! Those stencils are quite marvellous, and I love how you combine stencils together to get a really great overall look. So far I only use gelli prints for collage papers, but it would be fun to try to make really cool paintings just with a layered gel print. I do like Amsterdam paints for painting and have a lot of them, so I'll make sure to try them on the gelli plate. Amsterdam also has some "pearl" colours that just give a sheen of that colour on top as well - pearl blue, pearl white, pearl red, etc. They might be fun tried on a gelli plate.
It's so weird when you're in the process, and tired, how all color theory goes out of your head. But I do believe that people can learn even from my mistakes and sometimes I even like the results. Brown is a color I never strive for. These are usually play sessions to try out new stencils. I have a video I'm posting today that show how I plan prints for a specific project so the colors are more thought out and I'm mixing colors to get a certain result. But they are simple papers. Not too many layers.
@SusanCliftonArtist I know exactly what you mean. I'm pretty new to art, and no spring chicken, so forget things easily. You actually did mention it later in the video when you were looking at the resulting papers, but I had interrupted watching to comment - otherwise by the end I'll have forgotten!🤦♀️ So by the end I knew that you knew. I totally love when people post all their "mistakes" , I truly believe that I learn better (remember my learning) through mistakes! So thsnks for posting whatever you get and not getting hung up in perfection, which defeats the purpose! I'm really loving and learning from your videos! Thanks for sharing your process!💝👍
@@SusanCliftonArtist I’m 60 years old and just started painting. I forget things all the time. I find great value in your teaching👍🏾
Love red and love purple!!
I don't know why more people don't like that combination. 💖
I use Golden and Amsterdam a lot. Try the metallic Amsterdams! Cost effective instead of Golden. Now - what also works so well - are JoSonia paints for a fraction of the cost. Great colors, too.
I was planning to try the metallic Amsterdams. I have some Liquitex but haven't been happy with the results. Where do you get JoSonia paints?
@@SusanCliftonArtist Jerry’s Artarama or from their website. They are only about $3.50 per tube.
@@SusanCliftonArtist I just discovered your channel today. I’m binging right now. Thanks for these videos. -Elise
Thank you.
Thank for watching
Have you done this with fabric? I' very curious to try on fabric, but not sure what kind of paint. Thanks. Very inspiring.
I have not. Last year I was planning to because my neighbor at the art center was a textile artist and she was going to let me borrow the paint. We had to move out before I had a chance to try it. I’ll ask her which paint she recommends.
Also a fan of the paint but not the dispensing caps. Flip-up lid hinges break easily. Nozzles would be ideal.
Amsterdam sells little nozzles seperate! 😊
Good to know. Thanks.
Just getting started with Amsterdam so thank for the warning. I do like the consistency.
Hi! What do you use over on the side where you seem to roll your brayer before and after you apply the paint. Is it just paper or something else. Thanks.
Yes, exactly. I clean the brayer on a piece of copy paper. Sometimes the random patterns I use for a collage background.
Thank you! @@SusanCliftonArtist
How would you suggest we clean our gelli plates? I hear there are several methods
I did a video on that: ruclips.net/video/6KdD9xnmoaw/видео.html. You can also use packing tape but I find on really stuck on paint the hand sanitizer works best.
Can one mix Amsterdam & Golden paints together?
Absolutely! I mix paint brands all the time. Keep in mind on the gel plate that the drying times may be different. And if you mix them together that will also change the drying time.
