It is tough to jump back and forth because of how many changes in pickup selection and overdrive mixed with talking. But I like the video. The new Mullards sound nothing like the old Mullards I have a few of both. Not that they are bad, they just do not have the character the old ones have. Tubes are interesting devices, very simple in many ways, the triode is just a heated filament inside of a cathode tube, the electrons boil off this cathode from the heat then pass a coil of wire(grid) on the way to the anode(plate) the shapes, spacing and materials used make a difference in the frequencies you hear. I have many old tubes, some NOS some used but tested good and enjoy tube rolling and find not only do individual tubes sound unique but some mix better or worse with the other tubes in the mix. I build my own amps and spend a lot of time getting the components and tube array right for each amp to have maximum tone. I tend to prefer octal preamp tubes like the 6SL7 vs 12AX7, to my ears the octal preamp tubes have more harmonic content. Cheers.

Hi, yes it got a bit overwhelming making this shootout video. I'm learning this youtube thing step by step😄 I guess the 6SL7 isn't interchangeable with the 12AX7/ECC83 and has a different socket? Would be nice to hear a demo comparing them though. Cheers, Thor

@@GUITARSGIZMOS yes the 6SL7 has the same 8 pin socket like a 6V6 or EL34. I believe they make adapters though

    Philips Miniwatt for the win!

You got me re-installing that tube to check 😀 I think both the Philips Miniwatt and the Mullard are up there. Working on a follow-up to this video now and will include a bit on the Philips. Thanks for your input. It's quite hard to choose between the best of this selection of preamp tubes.

Did you compare your Dumble clone for a contrast? Lots of effort and nice pickin. If you wanted a blues, jazz 40s tone, which one?
    Thanks

Hi thanks, I think regarding tone, the preamp tubes are there to bring out the best tone character of the amp you're using. So I would in this case go for the one I found most musical. Being the 1950's Mullard or perhaps the Philips Miniwatt. But for the 40's tone you're describing, I'm not sure. I would probably start with looking at what gear, amps, speakers and not least guitars and pickups they used to get the tones.
I did try some of the preamp tubes I found most to my taste with the ODS amp, and you can check it from a video of mine with the title: "A brand new Mullard 12AX7 vs a 1950s Mullard ECC83" (ruclips.net/video/NTfFhw-8cSw/видео.html). Cheers, Thor

Try some RCA or Sylvania?.... What sort of speaker are you using?

    • @GUITARSGIZMOS

Hi, I haven't but might have a RCA available that I can try. Will let you know what I think if I find it. It's a Jensen C12N speaker (12").

Hi again, I tested the RCA now and find that the one I have here is more like the ones I found to be very clean with little breakup. It is a good tube for sure, but I don't bond as much with the RCA as I did with the Mullard, Philips and the Tungsram. This is of course very much a matter of taste and hard to say that one is better than the other. Thanks for your input 🙂

I need help spent a lot of money in 48 hours on NOS really UOS 6v6gt, 12ay7, 5751, and 5y3. Don’t know why but for my 5e3 that needs work so I was going to find which ones sound best. But a dumbass for dropping a lot of money.

A very very bad time to be a tube Junkie. The prices are ridiculous. I think they're taking advantage of us. It's going to cost $1,000 to retube are amps, be nice to the tubes you have.

I have a big box of tubes from when they were very cheap and I convinced myself they were weak. But I've been using them and they are fine. I'm glad I saved them all.

@@stringlocker I’ll never go digital. I just love the pain, maintenance, and most of all tone and feel of a tube amp.
