Incredible video Thor! I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into these vids. This is the first time I’ve seen someone do a “tube comparison” ... I’ve learned so much from you! And your playing, well it just “ speaks to me” ...

Hi DW, I love tweaking my gear to possibly bring out the best of it, and there is something magical about finding that one preamp tube that will make a difference. I realise that it is hard to hear any difference in the recordings, but I do notice a difference to how the amp responds. Thanks for your kind and encouraging words my friend 😊 Cheers!

Super interesting video and many thanks for making, I've often wondered myself what differences there would be, I want a fairly good clean headroom as i use pedals in the front, so went with the AY7 @ 40% gain as recmd but may now try the 12AU7 too, thanks to your video

Great video Thor! Excellent playing as always and very well put together. As soon as I heard the ECC81 that was it for me. It let more of the guitar shine thru and the dynamics and clarity were superb. It never seemed to push the amp over the top and had a nice sweet tone. I use those Mullard ECC83 but they are so fat they don't suit every circuit. Good luck with tube hunting mate and keep up the video's! Let's get you to 3k subs!!

Hi Brian, I think the ECC81/12AT7 is the one, but if I can get hold of some decent 12AY7 it could be interesting to test that as well. I didn't test with a humbucker equipped guitar in this video and came to think of that I need to try my ES or Les Paul to get a better understanding of how it deals with humbuckers. Thanks for cheering me on mate 😊 PS! I have started your book. Impressed with your writing and it is a captivating story. Will let you know when I have finished it. All the best!

@@GUITARSGIZMOS Another one to try is a 5751. I use a NOS Philips/Jan 5751 in the first slot of my JCM800 clone and it kills that fiery harshness. Cheering you on Thor is effortless. I love your video's, your playing and content and the humble presentation you bring. It's refreshing. I hope you enjoy the book my friend.

@@walkinginharmony I see that the 5751 gets good reviews. Thanks for the tip, I will check it out. I see people call it a tube more in family with the 12AX7 than the 12AT7, so it makes sense to take a closer look on what it will bring. And I do enjoy the book, but I'm a slow reader, and days will pass between each time I pick it up 😄 Cheers!

I landed here because I was thinking about putting some new tubes in a different brand of amp- that tweed sounds so good that now I just want to buy that😂 great vid and beautiful guitar/playing!

Thanks for your kind words 😊 If you're thinking about getting a similar amp, keep in mind that I got it delivered without a speaker and no tubes. The stock speaker and tubes really isn''t very good... There are some videos on my channel from when I got it, and also a speaker shootout before I decided to go with a Celestion Blue. All the best!

Thank you Ryce 😊 I think it is a worth while exercise to do, just to see if there is more mojo to get out of an amp. Cheers!

Very interesting video Thor , many thanks. I’m already looking forward to your next. And yes, lowering the gain of the tube is the first thing to try to tame the harshness of the tone and brings out the warm mids that we like to hear. But not only as you showed us. I have been using , with pleasant results to my ears, the TAD 7025 (gain of 70) in V1 in my Fender blues deluxe (and yes, with a different circuitry than yours). Happy hunting for your holy grail tube 😊

Hi Marcello, yes I think you make a good point, that it should be interesting to test this with many types of tube amp, depending on what tone/breakup you're after. Now you got me interested to try out a gain factor 70 tube 😄 I also need to test with a humbucker equipped guitar to see what that brings to the table. Cheers!
