- Delivery service in the world’s smallest high mountain range is still done the traditional way. In the Alps and other European mountains, porters have long been replaced by helicopters and cable cars. But not in the High Tatras of Slovakia.
When loaded, the wooden carrying frames used by the so-called ‘Tatra Sherpas’ weigh up to 100 kilos or more. The porters climb up to 2,000 meters with their loads, supplying essentials to remote mountain huts in the Slovakian national park.
Števo Bačkor is one of around 60 porters in the region today. Two to three times a week, the 47-year-old loads his self-built frame with firewood or food. With the goods stacked on his back, he climbs up the mountains to deliver them, come snow, ice, heat, rain or storm.
The mountain huts of the High Tatras depend on the porters’ deliveries, as there are hardly any roads or cable cars. The high mountain region in the Carpathians is a strictly protected nature reserve and, together with the Polish national park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
This film accompanies Števo Bačkor on his dizzying ascents. He falls into a meditative stride to cope with the exertion. Strength and courage are not enough - passion is also a requirement for the tough job. It takes him just under three hours to climb 1,000 meters, ultimately reaching the Zbojnícka hut at an elevation of almost 2,000 meters. ‘Reaching the top is always a special moment. You may be exhausted, but you feel complete.’
Some of the ‘Tatra Sherpas’ have already lost their lives on delivery missions through the high mountains. In memory of colleagues who have died, the ‘Sherpa Rally’ takes place as a memorial run every year.

I did not realize how this load is carried in Slovakia even though we visit some of these shelters every so often. I guess it might the last truly romantic job in Europe. Romantic in its purest meaning. I owe these man of steel my greatest respect and admiration. Zdravime z Polski!

As a Slovak, i thought porters are pretty common in every mountain range in the world, and now, i feel very proud for my country to be this unique.

We have also famous offroad trucks Tatra made in former Czechio-Slovakia, now in East of Czechia. Ferdinand Porsche started to work there some 100+ years ago.

I met this guy (Stefan) when i was working in Starý Smokovec (High Tatras) he really is a good, humble guy. Respect to all porters.
The translation "Hut of Thieves" (Zbojnicka chata) is incorrect. A better translation would be "Hut of Bandits". Or maybe "Hut of Outlaws".
"brigand" is the word. Or Jánošík is described as "highwayman" in English texts.

Great documentary! I love those mountains. Fun fact: Everyone hiking in the High Tatras can carry a small load of goods to the huts. You get a tea for free in the hut as a thank you gift.

Yes, that is true. I also carried a small amount, around 30 kg down from the Rysy hut.
Yup. I carried a log up there once and the tea was the best thing on earth at that moment. Not only it tasted far, FAR better than normal commercial ones (as it is collection of amazing, local, mountain herbs) but the feeling after the climb was so unreal. I hope more people will join and help :)

I remember hiking along Studeno Dolina last year and seeing one of these guys walking along, pack twice the size of him, in shorts with a dog. Couldn't believe my eyes. Followed him for about half a mile before he cut through what looked to me like impassable terrain.
We carried on, tried following the main path but got lost after a bank of fog and snow rolled in behind us. Ran into 3 other hikers also lost on the same trail and we decided to stick together and try and press on to Skalnata Chata.
I was in front. The path we were meant to be following was snowed over. The only thing we could see were the 2/3 inches of each tree top sticking out. I wasn't sure if we were higher up the mountain than we should've been or not but after about 10 minutes I spotted a darker patch ahead. It was a footprint. We followed these as the only sign we could see.
I had a feeling it must be the sherpa and, sure enough, it ended up tracing these all the way to the cabin. Stopped off at the hut there and asked the one guy there if he'd seen this man. He'd already dropped off the supplies and left. It was still snowing outside. We had the best beer of our lives in that cabin and we all had to bumsled our way down the mountain on the ski slope to get down before sunset.
Stefan is the embodiment of strength and decency, what a great guy, respect!

I had already seen something about these mountains, but from the Polish side. These Slovak guys who carry weight on their backs up the mountains deserve our admiration and respect. They should be rewarded by the government of their country.
Impressive. But why do they have to go up during winter-time at all? In the Alps, huts (shelters) are closed and abandoned before winter comes and reopened in late spring or early summer of the following year.
Some are closed and some not and there is still lot of snow even in may.
@@geotropa1043 it is officially closed. there are still people doing research, repairs and other things that cant be done during the high season. The huts are also safe space used when there are people who ignore the law and need to be rescued.

That's unimaginably hard! I don't think any formally recognized sport can be harder than this job! I'm just stunned.
The porters of the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan have a much, much, much harder time. They carry more weights, without much equipment, for a trek of about 14 days through some of the most inhospitable places on earth. They live a life of extreme poverty and are often only tipped a few dollars for carrying climbers' equipments for two weeks, and paid very poorly by their employers. I encourage you to search about them.
I have just watched Freedom under Load about these porters. Very beautiful and inspiring. I recommend it as it was recommended to me following my comment above. It's a video 1 hr long . Some of these guys are over 70yrs old. I found it on Vimeo. 😍
I am slovak, me and my family are comming to Tatras every year so porters are very common for me and i tought that it's common thing in every moutain range, now i feel suprised and proud! :)
Whenever someone asked me abroad what's interesting about our country I always liked to answer that we have beautiful mountains and beautiful women 😊 These guys are greatly respected and true soul of High Tatras. Great documentary DW, thank you.

I have spent a lot of time in Vysoke Tatry. Always impressed by the porters and the loads they carry. True superheros. During my trips to Slovakia, people there were always warm and welcoming. All my respect to the porters, and good and safe speed up the tracks.

I had no idea this profession still existed. Love and respect to everybody doing this: men + women of steel...! I've visited Slovakia before but not the Tatra mountains. Hope I can go someday - it looks very beautiful! Love from Germany.
A perfect job for a man who loves the mountains.
They used to use similar porters at the low Tatras to supply the Stefanik hut.
At the end when Stefan arrived to the goal of the sherpa rally and they greeted him with "super, Pista", I could not believe my ears. It seems the nickname of Stefan/István is Pista in both Slovakian and Hungarian. A new thing I learnt. 👍

So happy to see this! I'm from neighbouring Hungary and have been to the beautiful high Tatras many times - I've always had massive respect for these guys. The intense focus you can see on their face and the way they keep their pace absolutely steady really shows how hard this work must be. Sometimes there were smaller packs just placed by the side of the trail for any tourist to carry up if they wanted a challenge (any I remember seeing some of those abandoned on the way...) If you ever go there, don't expect to find any rubbish bins in those mountain huts - what you take up, you take down with you :)

I live about an hour and a half from the border with Slovakia on the northern side of the Tatra mountains in Poland. I love crossing the border and going to this area of Slovakia. It's so beautiful and the mountain villages and towns are wonderful.
@@krayxeezagreed. We went in the fall of 2019. A polite and reserved people, that can come across as serious, but lovely none-the-less. We stayed in Kosice, Trencin and Bratislava; enjoyed the smaller cities more. Public transport is the way to get around; the journey by train is magnificent with the fall colors. Our son speaks Slovak-so he acted as our guide. We already live in a very mountainous region; and I don’t want to downplay the Tatras--they are indeed beautiful, but we are already well versed with rugged mountains and hiking based on where we live. We still loved the beauty, history and food of the land. Castles wherever you look! We don’t have any of those!

@@mrp4242 I’m glad you liked it. I’m half Czech and half Slovak (my mum is from Trenčín) so I’ve traveled both countries and I just feel something special in Slovakia. Although it’s poorer (smaller cities and villages sometimes show that), majority of my family lives there and I absolutely love to spend time there, especially in the mountains.

Witnessed some of these porters first hand years back on a hiking trip to the Tatras. One of them passed me with what looked like a full keg of beer on his back. And two cases of pickles. IIRC our innkeeper was tapering for the six peak alpine marathon the week after we left. Amazing country and people! Beautiful place…

Respect. I was doing same course as this Sherpas Onehundred (from Hrebienok to Zamkovského chata) with my 5kg backpack on a dry sunny day. I barely made it 😅 But it was worth it! Thanks to the sherpas I could get new power from a delicious local cabbage, potato and meat soup called "Kapustnica".
I met some of them when I hiked across Tatra couple of years ago. One that I met was bringing 80 kg on their back when he was taking a break. He told me plenty of stories about how he trains every summer that way. It's pretty mind-blowing their strength was, mentally and physically. I was starstruck and in awe, as I will always be.

Those dumplings are delicious 😋. My grandmother 👵 used to make them . They are filled with strawberries or plums, or peaches . Then you add a sweet cheese on top with melted butter over it . They are big, like the size of a baseball or softball . 😋❤️

Slovakian hikers are the best people in world, highly recommend to visit Slovakian nature.
The Tatra are amazing. I have only seen them from the Polish side though. I once man-packed equipment to the top of hill in Scotland to service a generator for a mobile phone base station (tools, consumables, spill kit, new oil, waste oil back down). Not as heavy as Stefan's load though. Most of the route was through the forest so the wind wasn't too bad but there was no path so it was rough. It saved a lot of money for the customer but I was told not to do it again: "If you do that then they'll expect us all to do it." So it was back to paying over £1000 for a helicopter!
You don’t need to travel to places to enjoy the juice of life when everyday of your work life is so beautiful, no matter how hard their lives may seem, mountain people across the globe seem to be the most content in their lives ❤

This is so wonderful. Delivering veggies, vitamins and parene buchty with such dedication. At the same time, such an honorable profession. Good for the heart, mind and soul.
The most telling part, was the porter saying, you come down the mountain a better man. Hiking has its perils, but this is next level.
On a recent trip to the high Tatras, we ate lunch in several of these huts. This documentary gives a whole new perspective and level of respect to the food and drink there. Thank you for the hard work

We have something similar in Malaysia where our porters will carry stuff in Mt. Kinabalu. Do visit Mt. Kinabalu if you have the chance.
Yeah too bad Malaysia monetized the ascent to Mt. Kinabalu......in Slovakia it costs 0. And you can go anywhere. Within the range.
Not so true. You need to have a mountain guide with you for some parts such as the tallest mountain. That can get expensive. But yes the entry to the mountain range is free.

So weird to hear a Slovak guy being dubbed into English, it's usually the other way around. I don't want to imagine what would happen if people doing this would retire. And they will... sooner or later. But actually any tourist can try to do this - in summer there are 2kg bags or potatoes or small paskages of bottled water prepared near the "lower" hut that are accessible by car and if you carry the load up to the hut, you get a tea or a soup for free.
Interesting, cannot find any info about it. But I would like to try it, which hut is that?

Tatras - so underestimated, mostly by tourists which think they're 'little mountains'. Like in every mountain range, one has to be very cautious.
And this mountain refuge sit at 1960 meters above sea - one of the few located up there in the Tatra clouds.

The graphics for Deah Stranding 2 look amazing
Everytime domestic and foreign tourists wonder about the stores of supplies in Tatra chalets, and the prices for meals so high in the mountains, they should remember we still bring them up there via mountain porters. Not with noisy helicopters. All of the waste is also brought down purely by mountain porters. In this sense, Slovakia was far ahead of its time when it refused to abandon the mountain porter tradition. These days, everyone is recommending this mountain porter tradition as a prime example of ecotourism-friendly management of chalet resupply. (This is all the more improved and bolstered now that Tatra chalets have made an effort over the past few decades to be refurbished as environmentally-friendly as possible.) Slovakia and Japan are one of the few countries in the world that are keeping the chalet mountain porter tradition healthy and alive.

I am so happy tt this park is protected from nov to mid june so tt wildlife plants and animals can thrive!! How important!!!! Not always about making money via tourism. But to protect nature for the long run!! Kudos to the porters too! So tough to carry 100k!!
The rule of "no dogs" is sadly often ignored. They scare the native animals.
