Serge Grondin Dude! ;) I let these dry for three days before putting them in a light cactus soil, then watered them lightly. Every single one of these cuttings rooted, and are still growing happily today! I've had success with this method every time! Thanks for your comment!
This is THE ONLY vid I could find on all of RUclips telling how to ROOT and not graft!! Thank u so much! I have a beautiful moon cactus with tons of babies I can't wait to root. Thanks again and I just had to sub after this lol.
Memory lane: my how 6 years has grown on you Laura😊!! You've grown from giving a technical talk with a "teacher voice" to a comfortable gardener companion taking us along on your day of gardening activities.
I had an over watered cactus that had 9 babies on it. I just got then into some cactus soil and am anxious to see them root! Thank you for the oh so helpful video Laura. :)

Hi Laura! I just subbed to your channel and watch your most informative videos. While I've dabbled in tropical plants in the past, I'm fairly new to succulents and I'm fascinated with them. Their survival skills are like no other plant group. I think most people fertilize and water them as regular houseplants and fail because of thing like root rot. I feel like I've learned my lesson from an Echeveria and Jade plant. I overwatered them and they dropped a few leaves (petals) in protest. The entire plant was not lost, however, and I'm using this as an opportunity to propagate the fallen petals.
Super cool! I live in Arizona and there’s cactus in every corner yet buying them at plant stores is soooo expensive. Glad to know I can regrow them from other cactus !
Thanks for the straight forward instructions. I have two large purple prickly pear that need trimming back, and now with this knowledge, I can take the pieces from their pruning & plant them in other areas. I'm excited to get started!
Jennifer me That is so funny, I JUST repotted those cacti that I rooted in that video today! They all rooted beautifully! Best of luck and thanks for watching our video! :) ~Laura
Thanks for this video, my cactus was looking poorly, but the stems were quite tightly packed so I missed the rot until it was too late. I've only managed to save a few small cuttings so hopefully I'll be able to propagate it. 🤞
Thank you. You were concise and easy to understand. I have been looking for a day on how to handle cacti. Many videos are muddled either bad audio, the editing or just fly by the seat of the pants confusing.
I made a common mistake by buying a Eve's Needle Crest Cactus and not treating it for possible bugs. I was forced to do drastic surgery to remove the black rotting part, I saw a red mealy bug run as I working on it too. I literally cut this plant to pieces because the rot was so bad. After watching your video, I am sure I did the right thing. I threw out all of the soil and I am letting the cuttings dry before replanting. I made this mistake years ago and lost my entire collection of beautiful plants. I truly hope I can get it to regrow.
I love your videos! I am learning so much. Can I say, I am soooo jealous of your setup inside and out. Although I’m primarily growing succulents because of limited space and sunny windows, I love watching you work outside. Your outside area look beautiful. I have one question, and I am sorry if you’ve already answered this but although I looked though the comments, although I saw this question, I didn’t see an answer. I am assuming that for the first cactus (rotting one) there was not much to do with it or do you try to save it? For the second one, what do you do with the bottom portion? Do you let it sit and see what happens or do you discard it? Again, thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge.
I know that this is an older vid but just wanted to say thank you for showing me how simple it is. I have 2 cacti 🌵that tops died. Looked outside & one has a lil baby shoot off the side. I’m gonna try this. 🤔 THANKS
Thanks for all the info. I know little to nothing about cactii and trying to figure out how to treat them. What I thought was that you don't really water them from the top but rather put the pot they're in on a saucer of water and let them suck the water up... my cactii got quite fat from that but it seems the roots are getting quite unstable. Perhaps they are rotting, no idea really what that looks like. So far I gave the super fat one a little support by some sticks so it doesn't fall over and break. Anyway, thanks for the video's, they're really helpful!
Thanks so much for sharing all your knowledge with us! I love plants of types and have learned so much from you! I share what I've learned from you with so many people and always tell them about your utube videos. Again Thank You!
I have a question. since I have a cactus cutting (10 cm) that is "healed" already, but on top has some dark spots of 1/2 cm, is it ok to replant it? it looks like it starts to rotten. do you think it will recover after i put in in a soil?
hi Laura, thanks for video, not keen to buy yet another gardening product, in this case cactus potting mix. Can i use regular potting mix with sand for drainage. Thanks Nick (Melbourne, Aust)
I’ve never had a cactus but I intend on getting one in the near future. I was wondering, if I got a cactus and really liked it, could I cut off one piece, plant the other, and have both turn into full cacti?
Hey I have 16 cacti that are ranging between ages 10-12 years and the eldest is starting to rot and grow two little babies on top, my question is is what do you do with the ill cactus after you cut the babies off?
You only delay the watering if you repot a cactus because roots may become damaged but these are cuttings and don't have roots yet so they won't rot..🌵🌵🌵
i have some extra large middle trunk cuttings from a large columnar cactus. it has been over 2 months and i am having that problem where the cacti shoots out new pups instead of roots. all sources are contradictory when it comes to how to root a large cactus. most sources say to not ever give it ANY water. i have had success with small cacti, do you have any advice for rooting large ones?
mohannad al madanie Thanks for watching our video! I've used Bonide's rooting powder, Olivia's Cloning Solution, and Clonex gel. I've seen great results with all three, but I like using the rooting powder the best! I haven't used any rooting powder on cacti, though. They seem to root great on their own!
Great, thank you! Can you dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and plant them instead of letting them dry out and callous over? Also, what happens to the base of the cactus that you take the cutting from? Does it heal over and keep growing? Thanks!
Hello!!! I just had 2 ruby cactus recently and they are about 8cm in height. But 3cm of the cactus from the base has turned yellowish - brown. What is the problem with my plant? Is there any way I can prevent it from turning brown any further? Please help, thank you!!!
And by the way, I find this video really clear in explaining how to root a new cactus thank you very much!!! And you have a really beautiful garden too!! :)

I have a yellow moon cactus from a hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowe's. It was doing okay for awhile, but I'm afraid it was over-watered. Its main body has rotted, but it has a strange, long arm growing from the side--it's actually longer than the main body itself. Would this rooting method work for this cactus as well?
Is it possible to save the main cactus from rot? I've one with some rot on the bottom, and it's all green still not yellow. Could it be cut like the one that was growing in the wrong direction?
Hi. I have a couple of cacti and I would like to propagate them but they won`t grow any babies I can cut off and plant. Is there something wrong with them? They look completely healthy in any way.
+Letmepickmynameidiot Nope, there's nothing wrong with your cacti! if they are looking healthy, I wouldn't mess with them. My cacti were sick, so they were sending energy into trying to create babies. Every single cutting I took rooted and lived! One of the cuttings is about 5 inches tall now!

Laura. Just found you. I have a question regarding my cactus. Is has grown so much and is "snake like". It is so long and heavy that it is unbalanced and pull some itself over, including the pot. I have wrapped itself around. I don't want to cut, but will it branch out? I'm not sure what kind it is, but it is a simple one kind of looks like the one in the video. I've had it for 7 years.
Hi, I do see that your comment is 9 months old. I just wanted to say while some cacti do naturally grow "snake-like", most cacti will also grow long and thin (called etiolation) when they don't have enough light because they're looking for a light source. So if you have a cactus that shouldn't be snake-like and it's elongating that means it's hungry for more light.

Here's a link to how to propagate an Aloe (www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/aloe-vera/aloe-plant-propagation.htm) and a link to a video on how to propagate a Jade (ruclips.net/video/EbRJt3XqAyo/видео.html) Good luck! ~Laura
