  • Samira, A former patient, contacted Discovery/TLC television network and urged them to dedicate an episode to vaginismus. She took a step forward by promising that she and her husband, Firas, will go face-on and expose their private details, highly unusual bravery for anyone who suffers from this embarrassing condition. Discovery/TLC was receptive and it is our pleasure to feature the entire episode.
As of February 2012, this episode has been featured on OWN, Oprah Winfrey's Network.
A correction to an erroneous statement on the show: our treatment is typically covered by insurance. To see if you are covered please see our website under the "Insurance" tab.
    NEWS FROM SAMIRA:
"I gave birth September 4, 2011, to a girl, Lamese. I wanted to thank the Women's Therapy Center for curing me and for giving me the chance to have a beautiful angel in my arms. My life is definitely what I imagined it to be thanks to you and God's grace."

Archana Jn After I went to the doctor he told me that I needed to get a set of dilators. So I got a set from a vaginismus website. They come with instructions on how to use them. But outside of that the best advice I can give you is when you start dilating I suggest doing it in the bathtub always go at your own pace and remember it's going to take time to get through this I still have to dilate every time before my husband and I get intimate. I would also suggest doing different stretches and yoga poses that help relax your pelvic floor muscles which are pretty easy to find online as well.

They said they were talking about getting a divorce. If you just got married and still haven't been able to have sex with your wife for a few months, nearly all men would be thinking about divorce. Especially considering they were arguing and the wife was starting to act crazy and depressed. He probably thought he would never be able to have sex with the woman at the time. People love to pretend "relationships are about so much more than sex," but they key part of a relationship is sex, without it, it's just two people who spend time with each-other. The reason people are attracted to each-other is for sex, so we can pro-create as humans.

Having lived thru this illness for almost 4 years i can say that it is heartbreaking. i got married a virgin and had no idea what was wrong with me. It was embarassing i had the same feelings Samira had. I even felt confused after a while about my feelings. I felt alone and felt guit for the hurt i was causing my then husband. Back then in 2005 there wasnt as much information as there is now and we were embarassed to tell anyone. My marriage did not survive. My advice to anyone going thru this is to seek help immediately. Do not be ashamed becuase this is real and it can destroy your relationship if you dont beat it quickly. Have the courage to step up and find a cure. Thats alot easier than looking back and realizing you lost the person you were meant to spend your life with. I wish i knew then, what i know now.

I also have it. I tried breaking my virginity many times but I just couldn't and I didn't understand why, I thought it was just fear. Until years later I came across an extract in a magazine talking about it, I went online to research and oh my gosh was I shocked. I immediately started crying, all the "symptoms" listed were exactly like mine, it's like I was the one being interviewed for all that information. Anyone I told about it didn't understand, believe or they just dismissed me. Even if I show someone the research they either don't care to understand or they don't believe that it's the same thing I have. I can't even insert a finger in my vagina talk less of a penis. When I looked up the causes I concluded that mine was caused by sexual abuse that I experienced as a child. I'm 25 years old and still a virgin, not by choice though. I have been in plenty of relationships and yeah there were other issues that led to the break ups but the bone of contention has always been that I was "refusing" to give it up. I always try pushing it to the back of my mind but it's always there and to top it off I also suffer from clinical depression that no one understands too, I'm just seen as "the girl with issues". Oh well, just another day in Africa.

Carmen Ho, you have no clue. The woman in this show put forth the effort, to get it corrected. This treatment isn't cheap and not covered under insurance. I paid for a program: book, dialators, and all. I still married her knowing, she had this. She never picked it up, or never tried. 3+ years of not being intimate, all the time arguing because of her being insecure, and her kissing someone else. I stayed 100% faithful, I showed support. It's a living hell for both people in the relationship and not because there is no sex! Intimacy isn't the most important part of a relationship, so our intimate moments was kissing. She gave that to someone else. I stayed 5 more months after that, to see if we could work on us. A little effort at first, and she quit trying. HOW MANY MEN DO YOU KNOW THAT WOULD STAY FAITHFUL OVER 3 YEARS WITHOUT, ARGUING ABOUT NOTHING, SHOWING NO EFFORT AND KISSING SOMEONE ELSE(cheating)? Sometimes the guy is worth it!

Same :) It definitely does. Vestibulitis is another condition that affects about 10% of women (can be constant and happen when a woman is sitting on a bike seat, or it can happen and just the whole area gets inflamed out of nowhere, etc.) but so many women don't talk about it. A good gyn will help someone with this. If a gyn ever says it's in your head--see another one!

This just makes me so incredibly sad for so many reasons.
First off: sex does not make a relationship. Sex is not the end all be all of a marriage. An asexual relationship is just as valid and loving as one that includes sex.
Secondly: being raised to fear sex or even having anything like tampons near your vagina, is so incredibly unhealthy for a young woman’s health. Fearing your own genitals is not exactly the recipe for a healthy relationship to your own body or sex in general. And the idea that the hymen is something that you “break” when you are penetrated for the first time is so misleading and just plain untrue. It’s a pseudoscience lie that has become this kind of societal jargon to manipulate women and make them feel dirty about having sex, because it supposedly “devalues” them as human beings, and dirties them for any future man they might want to sleep with. And that’s just such a fucking disgusting sentiment that I can’t even deal with it right now.
Thirdly: there are so many ways to have fun, fulfilling sex that doesn’t include any kind penetration whatsoever. Pushing for penetration when your partner is clearly uncomfortable with it and stressed out by it won’t lead to anything good. Instead you can mess around, get each other off with your hands and your mouths and learn what the other person responds to. Just have some fun for God’s sake! Get to a place where sex is something that’s related to feeling happy, safe, sated and close to your partner, not some kind of duty you should fulfill. Depending on what kind of vaginismus you have, that feeling of safety might start reducing the effects, because it slowly but surely removes the fear around sex, and often, by extension, penetration. Whether that be by fingers, a dildo or penis, or even just a tampon. However, that might also not be the case. It could be a permanent, and you know what? That’s ok too. It doesn’t devalue you as a person or a partner, and it shouldn’t be something that negatively affects your relationship at all if you have a loving and supporting partner.

I have multiple rare medical conditions, including endometriosis (not rare, but I had it extremely bad) plus Interstitial Cystitis, and Cystinuria. By my 30s, sex was always excruciating for me. I explained it to doctor after doctor and no one cared, no one addressed it at all. So on top of pain, I wondered if I was crazy, and my husband didn't understand. For me, sex was just gritting my teeth till it was over. Even though my husband's knew it was painful, he'd spend an hour or more, every time, forcing me to ask him to stop, because I couldn't stand it any more. I wish any of my doctor's had cared, offered me any advice, anything. I offered divorce, but he refused. Turned out he'd been cheating, he enjoyed cheating, and enjoyed my pain trying to please him. Not something I want to detail any more but when we were finally divorced it was a relief. In my 30's my periods stopped and I got divorced. Two of the best events on my life. In retrospect, of course.

I’m in a long term relationship, I can’t even count how many times we’ve attempted sex but I’ve never had sex with my boyfriend 🙃 luckily I have the most supportive BF who is patient with me. Also I believe mine is a reaction to sexual trauma, so it’s kinda different but this video really showed me that anyone can overcome it and it’s a natural thing that shouldn’t be feared. Best of luck to both of them and anyone else going through it.

It makes me so angry that intercourse is seen as consumating a marriage and if you don't have it, then your marriage is null. So angry! That is nobody's business but you and your spouse! There was another video of a couple where the husband was a pastor and he quit because they told him he'd lose his job if he didn't force himself into his wife.
I also have vaginismus. However my husband and I discussed it before our marriage and decided we'd have intercourse when the time felt right, and just let it flow. (We didn't know I had vaginismus at the time, but both dislike the myth of virginity)
We still had sex that didn't involve penetration, and it made for a lovely honeymoon.
Don't get me wrong, is an emotional struggle, I've cried more times than I can count over it, but it's not so gut wrenchingly pivotal as it was for this couple.
I also dislike the dramatic background music, very news report-y which makes it seem like the condition is a massive tradgedy and they're doing a secret ops investigation and the suspense keeps building.
Also how awkward would it be to have a doctor tell you "for this appointment you will attempt intercourse." ?!?!
    Goodness society, you're a jerk.

Russell Meyer it happens to atheists too. It seems to happen to about 1/100 women “naturally” and can have acute onset in previously “normal” women because of trauma of various kinds. My now-ex wife suffered from it, and neither her gynecologists nor any counselors we saw even believed such a thing existed. Religious guilt doesn’t help though.

    • @marinadee2771

Yup, religion and sex shaming doesn’t help anyone. Treating this takes a lot of time and therapy. All this over a hymen- essentially a tiny piece of skin tissue. The very idea of virginity is mind numbing. Instilling the fear of sex into younger girls all in the name of keeping them pure and holy... then comes adulthood and the very idea of sex makes them terrified, not only from the physical aspect but the emotional aspect too.

Muslims don't do cunnilingus. That's likely a big problem here. No lubrication or arousal

You don't need to have sex to have a loving relationship! It's disgusting how some people think the only way to show love is through sex. What ever happened to cuddling and deep conversation?
