I think Jean's death was what changed everything about Oppenheimer's outlook. Before, he was gung ho about building the atom bomb, about being the first to discover how to harness the atom and about ending the war. Then Jean died, because of him, and the guilt over her death nearly crippled him. He got a taste of what it was like to know that someone had died because of him and his actions. And then, a few years later, he would realize that more than 200,000 people had died because of him.
So because of her political views possibly being seen as a threat, it’s unknown whether Jean Tatlock (the real person) was killed or committed suicide. We do know that she was mentally unwell before her death. However she apparently killed herself only by submerging her head underwater, something extremely difficult to do due to the body’s reflexes. There was also chlorine hydrate in her blood, which is suspicious. So the director did this on purpose to give a nuanced view on her death, was she killed or is that her psychedelics and lack of mental health combined with her suicidal intentions? No one knows, so this scene was eerily done in this way to be left to interpretation.
In the book American Prometheus Jean’s death was implied to be very suspicious This scene shows either because Oppie’s association with her got her killed, or his decision to end the affair which compromised Jean’s mental health Either way it was a tragic loss that weighed on Oppenheimer’s conscience
Also her unsigned letter with handwriting going scribblish instead of cursive hints that it may not be her who wrote it or she was too drugged up to sign or even write it properly.
Cillian's acting in this was so good.
