  • Look no further! This is the correct procedure to handle the electronic parking brake and pad replacement on a 10th gen civic without an OBD tool.
    Note: after releasing the parking brake at the beginning, you can turn the car off.
    The manual recommends winding back the actuator spindle as shown in the video if you do not have an OBD tool to put the brakes in service mode. If you do have the OBD tool that can put the brakes in service mode, you can skip unplugging and removing the brake actuator (black plastic motor housing). I recommend doing the spindle retraction however you end up doing it as it is easy to do and guarantees a problem-free install.
    This procedure is based on the service manual procedure, with the exception of removing a brake line bolt under the hub that I don't think is necessary.
    Used in this video:
    *Brake Compression Tool: amzn.to/37FkPxP
    *E11 Torx Socket: amzn.to/3LoPEFi
    *Milwaukee Electric Ratchet: amzn.to/3kyEa6F
    *Simple Green: amzn.to/3LliC9j
    *Torque wrench: amzn.to/3kyExOB
    *Duralast Gold Ceramic Pads DG1878
    Overall, a very easy and painless DIY!

    Great video, just did mine following this video! Only thing I did differently was I did not remove the actuator clip, it can just stay on as long as you don’t leave it hanging on wire. (I didn’t want to end up breaking the brittle plastic clip, it didn’t come off within first minute and didn’t want to force it) thx for the video!

    Very useful video. Thanks! Just did mine. Painted the centre of the discs / rotors with silver VHT paint whilst I was at it as they had become a bit corroded, but not worn enough to warrant replacement. I think I live in somewhat damper weather than you do 🙂 I decided not to disconnect the cable from the motor unit, but otherwise followed your method. For the second set I found it easier reattaching the motor unit to the calipers before replacing the calipers, but I don't suppose it made a big difference.

    Fantastic guide. One thing, sometimes those actuator cable tabs are ON there (broke both tabs trying to get them to release). My work around on my second side was to simply take the actuator off with the wires still connected, and just support the actuator on a jack stand out of the way. If they refuse to budge that might be the best path.
    Otherwise everything here is spot on, and super easy!

    1. Do I still need the OBD tool to put the car in maintenance mode using your method?
    2. What does the compression tool looks like
    3. Does the new brake pads need a bit of sanding before putting them on? I heard some put the new brake pads on and end up damaging the rotor
    Thanks in advance.

    • @ez12a
      @ez12a  Год назад

      Thanks for watching!
      1. You do not need the OBD tool if you follow the procedure in the video.
      2. I have a link to the tool in the video description.
      3. You do not need to sand the brake pads. You may want to turn the rotors if they're above the service limit and if there is a small lip that developed due to pad wear. If you don't, the new pads may make noise until they're fully worn in.

    Is it okay to leave car in gear?
    Will removing the actuator require additional grease for the spindle?
    And also do you leave the car on after disengaging the e-brake?

    • @ez12a
      @ez12a  2 года назад

      You can leave the car in gear. Id also chock the wheels to be safe. Service manual does mention coating the spindle again with EPB grease. Dupont makes one. I felt like it was pretty well lubricated so I skipped that step.
      You don't need to leave the car on after engaging and disengaging the electronic brake.

    Just for some clarification/peace of mind, once the spindle has been manually retracted, does the rear caliper just compress straight in normally like a front caliper? Or does it have to be twisted and compressed at the same time like a manual parking brake caliper? I’m finding contradicting info on this, thanks in advance.

    • @ez12a
      @ez12a  2 года назад +2

      Hey thanks for the question! As stated, this is required to recalibrate the parking brake if you've manually wound the spindle back like in the video. If you use the obd tool, taking the brakes out of service mode will do the same thing. The goal is for the car to learn the new parking brake position by pressing the brake pads in. Because we don't have cable actuated brakes, the electronic parking brake is self adjusting whenever you engage and disengage it.

    • @ez12a
      @ez12a  2 года назад

      It is recommended by the service manual to wind the spindle back as shown or put the parking brake in maintenance mode with a computer. This is the proper procedure, and is the only way to guarantee you won't damage the parking brake. You risk damaging the parking brake if you force the piston back without retracting the parking brake properly, and many videos show the incorrect procedure. You may also run into issues fitting the new pads in if the parking brake is not fully retracted.
      Retracting the spindle even manually is very easy and adds only minutes to the overall job. You can spin the spindle by hand with a socket. definitely recommend doing it.
