  • 5 MIN Skincare MORNING Routine for ANY Age & Gender (Let's Not Complicate Things)
It's been almost a year since I've shared my AM skincare routine, so here is my updated regimen. (Spoiler alert: not much has changed.)
Nonetheless, I'm demonstrating my quick & simple--but highly effective--skincare routine I do every morning. Consistency is the name of the game. You don't have to use the products I use. I use these products because they've been time-tested by me and work very well on my skin; and I stick with what works. A basic cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen is all you need. Adding an antioxidant serum (Vitamin C, for example) is optional but not a necessity, in my opinion.
    Products used:

Since I mentioned I’m currently using a lower SPF: The SPF number tells you how long UV radiation would take to redden your skin when using the product as directed (that part is very important!!) vs. the amount of time w/out any sunscreen. So, when applying an adequate SPF 30, it would take you 30x longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen. SPF 30 protects against about 97% of UV rays while an SPF of 50 protects against about 98%. Products with higher SPFs often create a false sense of security. This is compounded by improper (inadequate) application. I will admit that I don’t reapply SPF on a daily basis. My consistent routine is applying an adequate amount once daily in the morning and wearing a broad-brimmed hat whenever I step out; and I call it a day. It would obviously be better (ideal) if I reapplied every 2 hrs throughout the day, but I’m telling you what I actually practice, so I’d be lying if I said I reapply sunscreen everyday every 2 hrs, because I don’t. Only when I’m spending inordinate time outdoors do I reapply. Bottom line: Applying a lower number SPF is FAR more effective and critical than insufficiently applying a higher SPF with the expectation of being protected. The “best” sunscreen, therefore, is the one you will apply as a daily habit for life. Wear your sunscreen, use enough of it, and call it a day; and wear a sun hat for added protection!

I completely agree with you about companies not asking your permission before reformulating their products!!! Seriously, companies need to understand that so many people have very reactive, allergic and/or sensitive skin and that even minor tweaks in their formulas can really flare a person's skin condition. No idea why they can't just keep products the way they are and opt to create a different product entirely with the new ingredients that way everyone wins.

The first person to demonstrate a proper application of mineral sunscreen. Bravo! This is the amount of sunscreen that must be applied. The demonstration shows how it must be worked in to the skin, the true initial cast and how it will fade with absorption. This is an excellent video!

    • @scrambledegg7908
      @scrambledegg7908 3 года назад +16

You really don't need to use that much. Yes, it's true that you need that amount to gain the full SPF effect, but this sunscreen is simply being used to help reduce skin ageing from UV radiation. She is not going outside in harsh direct sunlight for hours every single day. Even a very thin layer about 4 times as thin will protect your skin from at least 80% of UV radiation compared to 0% without sunscreen.

Hey there! A tip that I recently discovered: la Roche Posay and Garnier are both owned by L’Oreal. The super famous Shaka fluid/Invisible fluid from LRP is literally the same formula as the Ambre Solaire Advanced Sensitive face fluid from Garnier, they have exactly the same filters. Actually the Garnier one also contains hyaluronic acid which has allowed me to skip moisturizer in the morning and wear spf only. But the best thing is that the Garnier one is much cheaper!! if you can get it, I really recommend you try it, it works wonders 😭😭😭

Altruist is a good option too, only downside is that it can be a little bit shiny if you don't take the time to rub well. Other than that, it gives super high UVA protection, PPD 54 for their spf 50. Also it's pretty cheap.

I want to mention that your skin is amazing! it's not just glowing, it also looks very thick and elastic, which is something that I've been noticing younger people actually have compared to older people.
I'm 30 (turning 31 in January) and I had a pretty basic skincare routine with spf included and occasionally adding a vitamin c serum since I was almost 19, but it was on and off depending on how much time I had to actually do the routine, how much money I had to buy the products (college years were the worst in terms of time and money) and other factors, so my skin has stayed pretty much the same over the course of these past 11 years. But when lockdowns started it triggered a really bad depression and I suddenly stopped doing any kind of skincare routine for almost a year and a half because I just didn't have the energy to do anything else than showering and brushing my teeth, and given that I'm not under 25 anymore, my skin got in a really bad shape incredibly quickly, got dark spots all over my cheeks, fine lines formed around my eyes and on my forehead and something I particularly noticed is that my skin got thinner, drier and it also looks slightly more translucent, and also noticed that younger people's skin is the exact opposite of this. I believe this is not only a lack of care, but it also has to do with aging. You're a few years older than me and that's why I'm so surprised your skin actually looks like this. I'm totally following you and all of your advices.

I love how you don’t endorse fad skincare routines / or trendy skincare routines (🙄 the 10 step Korean skin care) and use what is the most effective for you, all the while having a more simpler approach. In the meantime, your principles towards taking care of your skin is so respectable. I honestly like how your skincare becomes more like a natural approach towards taking care of yourself. Like a philosophy you live by. Compared to other people who becomes so compulsive and strict with their skincare, it makes a normal person be pushed away by their routines. Always trying to one up another. You are extremely relaxed with your skin and not too obsessed over having the latest greatest products. It also helps that you are lenient with yourself and not too hard on yourself whenever you do slip up. In a time where everyone is obsessed with anti-aging, the smallest thing that can be indicative of “skin aging” can drive them nuts and the amount of fear that gets associated with “aging”. I like your attitude towards skin care and not afraid of “aging” itself, but rather doing something that will maintain your overall skin’s health as well as MENTAL health important! People forget that you can’t have good skin without having a good mental well-being. Being too diligent isn’t always good

La roche posay cooling water SPF 60 switched me into pursuing chemical sunscreens. I love how it doesn't sting and my skin looks so even at the end of the day when I take it off. It disappears onto my skin and leaves a slight dewy finish. Did I mention that it doesn't sting? My skin is quite sensitive from using tretinoin 0.1% and azelaic acid 10% and I actually look forward to wearing my sunscreen now. I love how it doesn't really have a strong scent. I just love it.

I favorite sunscreens at the moment are the Exuviance Skin Caring BB Fluid SPF 50 PA++++ (also sold as Neostrata Sheer Physical Protection SPF 50 - same product, owned by same company) and Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF 50+ PA++++). I like Exuviance/Neostrata on my face because it’s a tinted sunscreen with green tea that helps calm down my fair, redness prone skin. I use Canmake on my neck and chest because prefer an untinted spf that won’t stain my clothing there. Hi there, if you're still looking for a sunscreen replacement, I find "Makeprem UV Defense Me spf 50 PA++++" (Korean brand available on Amazon) EXCELLENT, I've been using it for years. I also use Elta MD spf 44 or Australian Gold Botanical spf 50 - all three are 100% mineral sunscreens, fragrance free, alcohol free. The most matifiying is Australian G, which is lightly tinted (various shades available). Makeprem is in the middle, not too matifiying, not too "hydrating", it is not tinted. The most hydrating one is Elta MD which actually has hyaluronic acid in it. This one is tinted but they have tons of other options, hydrating or not, tinted or not. Hope this helps. Take care 💕

Hi, here are my sunscreen recommendations(ALL OF THEM ARE SPF 50/50+ AND HAVE PA++++ OR MORE):
🌸 The best one so far: Altruist Face Fluid SPF 50 (no white cast, both inorganic and organic sunscreen filters, the highest UVA protection of 5 star rating, it can sting around the eyes because it has niacynamide in it, but overall the best product).
🌸 The best affordable sunscreen: Altruist SPF 50 (in comparison to fluid this one is thicker and also leaves more of a white cast, but still pretty unnoticeable one).
🌸 My favourite Asian sunscreen: Verdio SPF 50+ essence and gel version, Bioré Water Essence SPF 50, but also Canmake SPF 50+ (affordable, lightweight sunscreens, that will be comfortable on your skin to wear all day long).

My favorite all time sunscreen is DRMTLGY universal tinted moisturizer spf 46. Its a combo mineral and chemical and does not sting my eyes like most chemical sunscreens do. Plus it’s tinted which helps even out my skin tone and the iron oxides in tinted sunscreens are supposed to help block blue light from the sun to protect against pigmentation which is my biggest issue. Love it and DRMTLGY is always having sales and it’s very affordable. My ride or die!

That's one Elta MD sunscreen I've NOT tried. I was just replying back to some others that suggested Elta sunscreens that I've tried several of theirs in the past, and they all caused me irritation. Maybe the one you recommended is different. I love Elta's ingredients, which is why I tried them...but unfortunately every one resulted in irritation on my skin. I will look into the Elements...

@@JenniferMyers I used the elta MD elements for a year, loved it. It was always just a bit too dark. I recently switched to the new DRMTLGY PHYSICAL tinted SPF 44 (both of these sunscreens are mineral) and I really have been enjoying it. The tint in the DRMTLGY is less dark, works better with my skin tone.

@@JenniferMyers definitely give it a go! I didn’t like the others either! UV Elements is gentle & 100% mineral.
I also only use 100% mineral sunscreens now. Sunscreens with chemicals can not only be irritating whilst using tretinion, but also researching into it are highly toxic. Whatever we put on our skin gets inside our blood stream within 30 seconds. So important people think about this when choosing products. This one is definitely worth a shot! Xx

Personally I give myself a break from sunscreen once a week or once in ten days. I do not have any scientific back up for this just thinking even our skin on our face and neck may need some rest and relax and expose a little bit to the natural light. But I will try to avoid direct strong sunlight when stay outside and wear my hat and sunglasses.

I agree! We need sunlight for vitamin D and I do believe it’s good for me. I don’t want to be pasty white. I wear sunscreen and hat in summer to keep the wrinkles at bay on face, neck but I like to use 15 on my body and get a tan. I just use self tanner on my neck and face. It makes me feel great to be in the sun.I am able to tan with 15, as I am light skinned but do tan during the summer.

What are your thoughts on laser hair removal?
I was introduced to tretinoin through your channel, and have started using it only once a week at the moment.
I wanted to do laser hair removal on my face - If I do, I will need to take a break from tretinoin a week before my session. I would love to hear your opinion.
Do you think it is damaging to the skin?
Also, I really admire you, you are very insightful, I value your opinion, and I think you are so well-spoken, truthful, and disciplined (in terms of being consistent with a routine and lifestyle)

I do at home IPL on my face, as a tretinoin user.
Unfortunately I tried laser on my face years ago, and I was one of the unlucky ones where it actually made the hair worse.
I’ve found at home IPL has reduced it a lot. You do have to be patient though.
Electrolysis is probably better, but you need to find someone you trust.
But in terms of using tretinoin AND facial hair removal, I would only do it if you’re an experienced tretinoin user. You don’t want to start laser or IPL on your face while your skin is adjusting to tretinoin.
I do my IPL in the evening on clean dry skin, and then just apply moisturiser.
I don’t apply any actives directly after. I’ve done this for over a year with no issues.

Hi Josie! I am jumping into this conversation because I have been doing laser hair removal on my face for years. Indeed, I have PCOS and extra facial hair on my face due to this 'condition'. My experience has been nothing but positive. Confidence-wise, it has changed my life and I would say that 80% of my facial hair (including my neck) never grew back. If I may, an essential advice I would give you: ALWAYS do this procedure is an actual clinic with supervised by dermatologists. Just my two cents. :)

love your vids Jennifer! I started using Obagi Sunshield because of you and another youtuber and wanted to let you know that their new formula is actually like their old forumula - ie it’s good again! For about a year it was gritty and horrible (they said due to supply issues caused by covid) but last week I was sent a replacement for the gritty product I purchased several weeks ago and the replacement is like what we fell in love with in the first place. So thankful because this is the only high-zinc oxide formula my skin can handle and I really did not want to go through the pain of having to find something eked. I also asked them about benzene and they said manufacturer/supplier shows this sunscreen is not contaminated. would have preferred obagi to do their own testing but did make me feel better to know even that much. hope that helps :)

After trying numerous sunscreens over the last year or so, I'd have to say my favorites are the Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen (SPF 50) and the Biore UV Watery Essence (SPF 50+, PA++++). Both leave a very natural finish on my skin and still look nice even after reapplying later in the day. The Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Face Liquid is a bit more mattifying, which I've been enjoying lately in the hot and humid weather. But the formula of the Biore UV Watery Essence is so elegant and feels so nice when I apply it. I can't choose a favorite between the two, so I use them interchangably :) They're both fairly affordable options as well compared to other similar sunscreens. My only complaint is I wish they came in bigger sizes. I wish more sunscreens in general came in bigger pump bottles so I wouldn't have to repurchase as frequently. With how consistently I use them I tend to run out quickly lol

Thanks for sharing Jeniffer. I too was so greatly disappointed by Obagi’s reformulation. I’ve been turning to some Korean formulated sunscreens. A recent favorite is ROUND LAB Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ on the American sunscreen front Elta MD SPF 44 Mineral is also wonderful for a tinted spf. I recently switched my Retin-A to Altreno and I am loving the gentle formula with superior results (in my opinion). I was going to recommend Elta Md but see that it caused you some irritation. Have you tried the UV Physical Spf 41 (tinted) from them? I've been using it daily for 3 years and love it. When I was first looking for sunscreen it was one of the few that didn't cause me irritation, just a thought in case you haven't tried it yet.
My other go to is the Colorescience face shield spf 50 PA +++. It has a peach/skin color tone to it and is also a physical sunscreen.
(They also make an undereye spf and lip gloss spf that are great, to anyone who might be interested in those.)
I haven't looked closely at the Obagi sunscreen, but it seems like it could be similar to the Hada Labo UV White Gel spf 50+, PA ++++. The only thing I don't love about this one is that it comes in a jar. Otherwise, it seems to be one of the few chemical sunscreens that doesn't irritate my face.
Good luck with the sunscreen hunt!
p.s. I just started using tretinoin within the past week so I bought the cerave healing ointment and a slew of vaseline (because of your recommendation) and my skin has been so happy!
