I have had my gall bladder out, but didn't strictly restricted food. Admittedly it was in the days of high carb diet but never went the whole way with high carbs. Still ate meat, eggs and cheese and of course ice cream and chocolate. Then in 2021 the dreaded type 2 struck. Went straight onto Low Carb remembering my nurse training from the 60s. In 2023 went onto Ketovore/carnivore not eating carbs every day. The way to avoid the the squirts is to go onto a ketovore/carnivore slowly. Even with no gall bladder your body can get used to eating high animal fat diet, with no squirts.

Mainstream Dr's & Dietician's in Australia aren't recommending Keto / Intermittent fasting. Medication & multiple daily meals & snacks are still standard medical recommendations. I was diagnosed with moderate nafld. Even with HbA1c going from 6.1 to 4.8 & dropping 25kg in 4 months, still another 10kg to before getting to a healthy weight range. My Dr was very happy & wants me to continue doing what ever I'm doing, my dietician wants me to put carbs back into multiple meals & snacks 🤷 I never feel hungry between meals & my blood sugar readings improved even more if I start a meal with greens & veggies. The hardest part is breaking the habit of years of constantly going from meals to snacks. Maintaining balanced healthy eating habits is my priority & everything else will improve ✌️

I've been low carb for many years but am still learning and changing. Good on you all for putting your heads above the parapet! It's lonely at times in this high carb, 'donut is king' infested world.
I’m doing lower dose Ozempic AND Keto/intermittent fasting. The Ozempic helps me stick with the keto. It doesn’t have to be either/or. The two approaches can be complimentary! Always love your talks. The most informative out there.

Wow, that's some story - we hope she made a full recovery without the need for surgery. Great that she is a beekeeper helping our wonderful bee friends to survive in an increasingly toxic world. However, eating large quantities of honey which is high in fructose (sugar) may impact her metabolic health in the long term.
Ben Bickman warns that Ozempic works by shrinking fat cells but also creates many more fat cells. So when stopping Ozempic all the fat cells can be fattened. Hightower risk if not changing your way of eating.

Dr Paul Mason thank you so much for explaining the problems associated with not having a gall bladder. I have had mine removed and now I understand why it has been so incredibly difficult to loose weight. I’m thinking about joining Defeat Diabetes but I’ve tried Keto before and eating too much fat sends me off to the loo 😢. Now I am wondering if Keto will even work for me because I won’t get that benefit from the release of bile. I’ve tried Ozempic but I couldn’t put up with the side effects.

My obese sister just started the Mounjaro(tirzepatide)injections and she's dropping weight quickly.However, she won't give up the sugar and carbs. So...I'm wondering if this drug is for life...or will she stop the injections and gain the weight back. There are some serious adverse events listed in the package insert...pancreatitis, gallbladder issues and thyroid cancer.
Hi Valerie. The evidence is quite clear. The medication works while the person is taking it, and when the person stops taking it then the weight is regained, between ¾ to all of the weight over the next 6 to 12 months. This is no different to all weight loss approaches - if you stop doing it eg low carb, then the weight comes back on. There is another problem with these medications. People often lose their appetite for protein. This means that there is often quite a high loss of lean mass, ie muscle mass, rather than loss of fat. Generally when people lose weight, you want no more than 25% of the weight loss to be muscle loss. With these medications, it appears that 40 - 50% of the weight loss is muscle loss. This is not a good outcome and we are probably / possibly not doing the person any favours with this amount of muscle loss. As we age, maintaining muscle mass is very important. - DD Team

Ben Beckmann says you lose weight, but if you stop, during the time you took it you created many small fat, so stopping means that you will fill up those small fat areas and gain back more weight.
There's more research needed on the long-term effects of Ozempic and other GLP-1s, and what happens when you stop taking the drug, but the early indications are: • When you cease the drug you will most likely regain most or all of the weight you have lost. • As well as losing body fat you lose muscle mass. Maintaining muscle mass is hugely beneficial as we age. • Cessation of these drugs results in regain of the fat, but no reversal of muscle loss (i.e. you end up in a worse place than when you started).
I was on Trulicity for a long time but it didn't do much for me. Now I have been on Ozempic 0.5mg and I have already lost 4.3 kgs in the last 5 months. I notice my appetite has changed a lot. Less food now definitely because of the Ozempic🤗
Hi Katerina, different people respond differently to different medications. It is great that the Ozempic is working for you. Generally Ozempic achieves the same result as low carb eating, but there are no side effects from low carb eating and low carb eating is very sustainable. And generally people with lose more weight and reverse their poor metabolic health better with low carb. We hope this helps! 👍🏻
Hi Leanne, thanks for the comments. Ozempic is only meant to be prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes in Australia. People are using it for weight loss but it is not on the PBS for that - which is why it is expensive, the Government does not support. Interestingly, if you read the small print, it says that using Ozempic should be accompanied by dietary changes including low carb. The average weight loss on ozempic is about 5 kg, and it generally lowers the HBA1C by about 1 to 1.5%. Low carb can result in a much greater weight loss and a much greater reduction in HBA1C. We hope this helps.
The $100/week comparison is only cost of Ozempic vs cost of KETO foods, but they still eat food while taking Ozempic so you have to add that in to the Ozempic use total cost/week and the cost of any negative side effects as well. I heard that some people get permanent digestion problems from taking Ozempic, it slows digestion not just appetite. I didn't hear enough actual side effects people have experienced on Ozempic and its weight loss cousin same medicine lower dosage than the diabetes dosage.

Weight loss is a complex problem. I have PCOS and autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I have tried low carb and keto with very little success. I can see why some people turn to this drug for help.

Have you tried fasting? Once fat-adapted, Alternate Day /36-40 hours fasting is easy to do, and works well to induce weight-loss (One day feasting on 2 HFLC meals, and then the next day fasting... Repeat.)
Mine was extreme vomit and diareah. only can eat ice cubes but lasted only on the first 5 days I almost quit. I should of start on .5 or 1.second week no side effects.
$100 a week? Wow, I'm on 1mg and comes to $45 a week, at $137 a pen for the 3Mg. I guess some are on higher doses? BTW I'm on it for PCOS - works well for Insulin resistance. No Side effects. Gall Bladder removed also ..... so this has been a good recommendation for me .
Hey Kassr, we're not aware of it being used for lipedema. We're not sure of the relevance of ketones in treating lipedema. Ozempic does not lead to ketone production. To get into nutritional ketosis, you need to eat very low carb, generally < 30 grams / day. We hope this helps. 🙂
All my friends are hooked on ozempic, (non diabetic) losing 20kg in 2 month eating all they want but tiny portions 👀. That’s incredible ! Like wow ! Jealous they don’t need to been on keto . And I don’t think it’s supply issues … it’s marketing to raise price ;)
Ani, we hope your friends will find other options, there are drug-free alternatives that are easier to find and cheaper to use. Not knowing how long the shortage of Ozempic will last, the RACGP have urged GPs to review their management of patients with type 2 diabetes and who are overweight or obese. They urge GP’s to re-emphasise lifestyle and dietary approaches to support people with diabetes.
Keto and low carb has been around way longer than Ozempic, with a mountain of evidence supporting it's use in weight loss, better glycaemic management and remission of type 2 diabetes, but somehow hasn't had half the publicity. Wonder why?!

Also, you can get very good results from a low carb eating approach without fasting, but many low-carbers find additional benefits from intermittent fasting. "It mimics a healthy ketogenic diet" - this is an old video but this statement can cause a lot of harm as people listen selectively, and, unfortunately, their main take away from it will be "Even Dr Mason said this is a wonderful drug and as good as the ketogenic diet". And we all know how good ozempic and wegovy are... for pharma.

Hey Beverley, if you have had your gallbladder removed, this doesn’t mean that you can’t digest fat. Your body will still make bile, which helps you digest fat, even without a gallbladder. Having had your gallbladder removed is not a reason to avoid a low carbohydrate diet. We hope this helps. 🙂
As was mentioned: Supplementing with bile salts - like ox bile - could be helpful. To improve bile excretion you might find benefit doing Liver flushes (as advanced by Andreas Moritz), to remove intrahepatic gallstones. These blockages inside ducts in the Liver, could have been the root-cause behind developing bile-sludge and - downstream - a dysfunctional Gallbladder.
Trust me, they are willing to take for the rest of their time. At least all my friends who are on it and they have been in keto, are willing to take ozempic for the rest of their life as long as they can stay effortlessly slim .

Eating should be as nature intended, instinctive. There is no such thing as dietetics in nature, animals eats what they have always eaten. Species specific species appropriate food. Humans are no different, so why is there a problem. Our species appropriate diet is the flesh and associated fat of mainly large ruminant animals. We have evolved as humans and pre humans through positive natural selection to be obligate hypercarnivores carnivores. Dont believe this nonsense that we are omnivores. My answer to anybody who says we are, is this....one would never question the fact that dogs and cats are carnivores would you??? Yet they consume copious quantities of kibble each day...yes wheat based rubbish. So are they automatically omnivores. No. At the trophic level we are apex predators. Top of the food chain. Our stomach baseline cavity ph is 1.5 to 2...that is akin to lions and hyenas and vultures etc. Its even lower than a dog. Why because we are adapted to eat meat and mainly meat. There is no other reason for such a highly acidic environment. Our primate friends dont come even close in that department. They obtain most of their energy as Fat not carbs...through fermentation of their fibre producing short chain fatty acids. Which macronutrient does a humble cows mainly live off..FAT..and then protein. Fat and protein are essential. So essential that we will die without it. Carbs are so dangerous that the human takes control and does everything it can to remove it from our circulation. It does best when its in control making it as ingesting it is an absolute disaster and at the core of about 80 to 90 percent of non communicable disease. I hope you have learnt something. Stay away from carbs at all costs. That means, everything plant based. Everything!
NOT ONE DIET FOR ALL. Some do not do well on a predominant animal based diet. Amongst healthy isolated people groups, Weston Price also found some mixed diets, as well as plant-based, though none were low fat, or completely Vegan. All the healthy diets included some forms of animal- and fermented foods.
@@maricamaas2326 humans have eaten predominately a meat based diet for 350000 and as pre humans up to 4 mill years. Nitrogen isotopic testing shows this to be the case. Positive natural selection has preserved the natural stomach cavity ph of 1.5 for humans. Only species that have a ph this low are highly adapted to consuming meat. There is no other reason but that apart from protecting us from bacteria which would have been the case as we were scavengers feasting on rotting flesh. This is fact. Yes vegetation was consumed during lean times but nothing like what we buy at the greengrocer today which is genetically manufactured purely for profit. Humans can eat only a few plants in the grand scheme of things as most are highly toxic and will kill us or make us very ill. Very plant that we can consume in todays world came about because our ancestors experimented with their lives. There was no other way especially before fire was invented. Our ancestors sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of handing down generation after generation what was 'safe' to consume. No plant is actually safe for human consumption. Yes we can consume them but it comes at a cost. Its full of anti nutrients, and a host of other nasties, eg hormonal disruptors and the list goes on. The actual vitamin and mineral content absorbed is very different to what we read in nutritional profiles of vegetables and fruits. Fruit contains fructose the worst of all sugars. The human body has not metabolic need for fructose. If it does produce it via glucose conversion its done because the person is in a severe metabolic disease state.
NOT found in nature, are these chemical patented, concoctions interrupting the body's natural adaptive, protective responses, such as increased BP&Cholesterol production, Obesity, etc. There certainly is a place for surgical interventions and prescribed medications. However these should be used sparingly, and with great care; especially when it comes to chronic use, resulting in side-effects.

Wow, that's some story - we hope she made a full recovery without the need for surgery. Great that she is a beekeeper helping our wonderful bee friends to survive in an increasingly toxic world. However, eating large quantities of honey which is high in fructose (sugar) may impact her metabolic health in the long term.
Ben Bickman warns that Ozempic works by shrinking fat cells but also creates many more fat cells. So when stopping Ozempic all the fat cells can be fattened. Hightower risk if not changing your way of eating.

Dr Paul Mason thank you so much for explaining the problems associated with not having a gall bladder. I have had mine removed and now I understand why it has been so incredibly difficult to loose weight. I’m thinking about joining Defeat Diabetes but I’ve tried Keto before and eating too much fat sends me off to the loo 😢. Now I am wondering if Keto will even work for me because I won’t get that benefit from the release of bile. I’ve tried Ozempic but I couldn’t put up with the side effects.

I have no gall bladder and take lipogold and Tudca to help with digestion and have no trouble on Keto, have lost 22kilos, off BP meds , working now on reversing insulin resistance....

My obese sister just started the Mounjaro(tirzepatide)injections and she's dropping weight quickly.However, she won't give up the sugar and carbs. So...I'm wondering if this drug is for life...or will she stop the injections and gain the weight back. There are some serious adverse events listed in the package insert...pancreatitis, gallbladder issues and thyroid cancer.
Hi Valerie. The evidence is quite clear. The medication works while the person is taking it, and when the person stops taking it then the weight is regained, between ¾ to all of the weight over the next 6 to 12 months.
This is no different to all weight loss approaches - if you stop doing it eg low carb, then the weight comes back on.
There is another problem with these medications. People often lose their appetite for protein. This means that there is often quite a high loss of lean mass, ie muscle mass, rather than loss of fat. Generally when people lose weight, you want no more than 25% of the weight loss to be muscle loss. With these medications, it appears that 40 - 50% of the weight loss is muscle loss. This is not a good outcome and we are probably / possibly not doing the person any favours with this amount of muscle loss.

Ben Beckmann says you lose weight, but if you stop, during the time you took it you created many small fat, so stopping means that you will fill up those small fat areas and gain back more weight.
There's more research needed on the long-term effects of Ozempic and other GLP-1s, and what happens when you stop taking the drug, but the early indications are:
• When you cease the drug you will most likely regain most or all of the weight you have lost.
• As well as losing body fat you lose muscle mass. Maintaining muscle mass is hugely beneficial as we age.
• Cessation of these drugs results in regain of the fat, but no reversal of muscle loss (i.e. you end up in a worse place than when you started).
I was on Trulicity for a long time but it didn't do much for me. Now I have been on Ozempic 0.5mg and I have already lost 4.3 kgs in the last 5 months. I notice my appetite has changed a lot. Less food now definitely because of the Ozempic🤗
Hi Katerina, different people respond differently to different medications.
It is great that the Ozempic is working for you. Generally Ozempic achieves the same result as low carb eating, but there are no side effects from low carb eating and low carb eating is very sustainable. And generally people with lose more weight and reverse their poor metabolic health better with low carb.

Ozempic is only meant to be prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes in Australia. People are using it for weight loss but it is not on the PBS for that - which is why it is expensive, the Government does not support.
Interestingly, if you read the small print, it says that using Ozempic should be accompanied by dietary changes including low carb.
The average weight loss on ozempic is about 5 kg, and it generally lowers the HBA1C by about 1 to 1.5%. Low carb can result in a much greater weight loss and a much greater reduction in HBA1C.

The $100/week comparison is only cost of Ozempic vs cost of KETO foods, but they still eat food while taking Ozempic so you have to add that in to the Ozempic use total cost/week and the cost of any negative side effects as well. I heard that some people get permanent digestion problems from taking Ozempic, it slows digestion not just appetite. I didn't hear enough actual side effects people have experienced on Ozempic and its weight loss cousin same medicine lower dosage than the diabetes dosage.

Weight loss is a complex problem. I have PCOS and autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I have tried low carb and keto with very little success. I can see why some people turn to this drug for help.

Have you tried fasting? Once fat-adapted, Alternate Day /36-40 hours fasting is easy to do, and works well to induce weight-loss (One day feasting on 2 HFLC meals, and then the next day fasting... Repeat.)
What bile salts would one take? What are the best ones?

No one tells you how bad the diarrhoea and intestinal pains are with ozempic. I have been so terribly sick with it
I think it depends, my friend is on 10mg feels zero side effects apart from dramatically losing weight
Mine was extreme vomit and diareah. only can eat ice cubes but lasted only on the first 5 days I almost quit. I should of start on .5 or 1.second week no side effects.
Everyone reacts differently. I believe 30% people get bad side effects.

Hey Kassr, we're not aware of it being used for lipedema. We're not sure of the relevance of ketones in treating lipedema. Ozempic does not lead to ketone production. To get into nutritional ketosis, you need to eat very low carb, generally < 30 grams / day.

Hey Beverley, if you have had your gallbladder removed, this doesn’t mean that you can’t digest fat. Your body will still make bile, which helps you digest fat, even without a gallbladder. Having had your gallbladder removed is not a reason to avoid a low carbohydrate diet.

As was mentioned: Supplementing with bile salts - like ox bile - could be helpful. To improve bile excretion you might find benefit doing Liver flushes (as advanced by Andreas Moritz), to remove intrahepatic gallstones. These blockages inside ducts in the Liver, could have been the root-cause behind developing bile-sludge and - downstream - a dysfunctional Gallbladder.

Trust me, they are willing to take for the rest of their time. At least all my friends who are on it and they have been in keto, are willing to take ozempic for the rest of their life as long as they can stay effortlessly slim .

Let's go back to what our grandparents used to consume and just eat real food!
Eating should be as nature intended, instinctive. There is no such thing as dietetics in nature, animals eats what they have always eaten. Species specific species appropriate food. Humans are no different, so why is there a problem. Our species appropriate diet is the flesh and associated fat of mainly large ruminant animals. We have evolved as humans and pre humans through positive natural selection to be obligate hypercarnivores carnivores. Dont believe this nonsense that we are omnivores. My answer to anybody who says we are, is this....one would never question the fact that dogs and cats are carnivores would you??? Yet they consume copious quantities of kibble each day...yes wheat based rubbish. So are they automatically omnivores. No. At the trophic level we are apex predators. Top of the food chain. Our stomach baseline cavity ph is 1.5 to 2...that is akin to lions and hyenas and vultures etc. Its even lower than a dog. Why because we are adapted to eat meat and mainly meat. There is no other reason for such a highly acidic environment. Our primate friends dont come even close in that department. They obtain most of their energy as Fat not carbs...through fermentation of their fibre producing short chain fatty acids. Which macronutrient does a humble cows mainly live off..FAT..and then protein. Fat and protein are essential. So essential that we will die without it. Carbs are so dangerous that the human takes control and does everything it can to remove it from our circulation. It does best when its in control making it as ingesting it is an absolute disaster and at the core of about 80 to 90 percent of non communicable disease. I hope you have learnt something. Stay away from carbs at all costs. That means, everything plant based. Everything!

Some do not do well on a predominant animal based diet. Amongst healthy isolated people groups, Weston Price also found some mixed diets, as well as plant-based, though none were low fat, or completely Vegan. All the healthy diets included some forms of animal- and fermented foods.
@@maricamaas2326 humans have eaten predominately a meat based diet for 350000 and as pre humans up to 4 mill years. Nitrogen isotopic testing shows this to be the case. Positive natural selection has preserved the natural stomach cavity ph of 1.5 for humans. Only species that have a ph this low are highly adapted to consuming meat. There is no other reason but that apart from protecting us from bacteria which would have been the case as we were scavengers feasting on rotting flesh. This is fact. Yes vegetation was consumed during lean times but nothing like what we buy at the greengrocer today which is genetically manufactured purely for profit. Humans can eat only a few plants in the grand scheme of things as most are highly toxic and will kill us or make us very ill. Very plant that we can consume in todays world came about because our ancestors experimented with their lives. There was no other way especially before fire was invented. Our ancestors sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of handing down generation after generation what was 'safe' to consume. No plant is actually safe for human consumption. Yes we can consume them but it comes at a cost. Its full of anti nutrients, and a host of other nasties, eg hormonal disruptors and the list goes on. The actual vitamin and mineral content absorbed is very different to what we read in nutritional profiles of vegetables and fruits. Fruit contains fructose the worst of all sugars. The human body has not metabolic need for fructose. If it does produce it via glucose conversion its done because the person is in a severe metabolic disease state.
NOT found in nature, are these chemical patented, concoctions interrupting the body's natural adaptive, protective responses, such as increased BP&Cholesterol production, Obesity, etc. There certainly is a place for surgical interventions and prescribed medications. However these should be used sparingly, and with great care; especially when it comes to chronic use, resulting in side-effects.

You can find lots of other things without coconut. I rarely use it. Mostly only add 1 tblspn of dessicated coconut to a mug cake occasionally.
