      www.etymonline.com/word/merry Middle English mirie, from Old English myrge "pleasing, agreeable, pleasant, sweet, exciting feelings of enjoyment and gladness" (said of grass, trees, the world, music, song); also as an adverb, "pleasantly, melodiously, The connection to "pleasure" is the 12 days of Saturnalia (Christmas) and was a time of debauchery, sex, drunkedness, idol worship, perversion, defilement, etc. Merry-bout "an incident of sexual intercourse" was low slang from 1780. Merry-begot "illegitimate" (adj.), also "bastard" (n.) are in Grose (1785). Merrie England (now frequently satirical or ironic) is c. 1400, meri ingland, originally in a broader sense of "bountiful, prosperous." Merry Monday was a 16c. term for "the Monday before Shrove Tuesday" (Mardi Gras). Lenten is about sacrifice - sacrificing people to Molech or Nimrod. Nimrod has many names. Oden, Nicholas (as in the deity St. Nicholas), etc. Like someone else posted, he had an eight legged reindeer. Watch all three parts of this: ruclips.net/video/7zSPY-wu2pw/видео.html Also read promotethetruth.com - not my sight. It's a hard pill to swallow for many, but one that may set you free from the beast of Babel.

    I find it interesting that my daughter, who was born on the 5th of December, the day of Krampusnacht, is kinda obsessed with Krampus. She loves to make Krampus gingerbread cookies every year. I also love the God Cerununnos. So, maybe she inherited my understanding of him and intuitively knows that “Krampus” is not that scary at all. .........Also in regards to leaving food out or Santa and the reindeer, my Swedish mother always insisted that we leave carrots out for the reindeer, as well as cookies and milk for “Santa.”

    One of Óðins many names is Jólnir :) Iceland also has an interesting tradition, Jólasveinar (yule-lads). Their mother is Grýla, a troll who is mentioned as far back as Snorra-Edda and there are currently 13 of them. There used to be 77 but they are mostly forgotten. In the old days they were portrayed as bad tricksters who would come down from the mountains 13 days before christmas to torment people, much like the greek goblins you mentioned. But in todays time the Yule lads have changed their ways and behave more like Santa clauses, dress in red and give gifts to children. So for 13 days leading up to christmas children get small gifts from the Yule lads (or... their parents).
    Their mother Grýla is still evil and will grab naughty children and put them in her sack, much like Krampus, and eat them later. She also owns a cat that eats people who don't get new clothers before christmas. So the lesson there is don't be poor?

    •  5 лет назад +16

    Frau Holle, Germanic goddess of death, winter, flax- weaving, house-work and the souls of nameless children was the original (possibly Neolithic) leader of the Wild Hunt and the Germanic pantheon. She led noisy processions of spirits through the air leaving small gifts in children's shoes during the Twelve Nights AND wore a red cloak.

    After initially finding out about the Shamanic mushroom origins of Christmas I started rethinking all sorts of bits about it. This year I heard the song Frosty the snowman in a different light. He's a mushroom shaman with the "silk hat" (probably a mushroom reference), who would come in to town once a year to make the good children laugh and play. What I put together was that it may have still been happening into the christian era and only known and practiced by select / pagan households. He was carrying a broomstick, like a witch/shaman, running from authorities. I thought perhaps the middle of the night rooftop delivery was to avoid those authorities. I hadn't even thought about high snow and blocked entrances, but I like that too. I wasn't totally sure about the whole thing until I just watched this and you mentioned Jokul Frosti. "HA YES" I yelled alone at my computer. Frosti - Frosty. The Snowman, no the man from the snow, or up high in the mountains like a shaman. I can't find any information on what actually inspired the song but it must have been based on some sort of other stories, probably only retaining sparse strange information. Also if a mushroom is not picked and dried it will eventually melt away, essentially. Also also I just love your videos. thanks

    • @drocmacnamara6641
      @drocmacnamara6641 5 лет назад +1

      Rudolph the red nosed reindeer is in essence probably about the mushroom too. The song is just a bunch of mixed info about all that same stuff only including the reindeer. I just love how it's only the red nosed one who can guide Santa through the stormiest night. I bet you could catch a glimpse of a reindeer eating one and it look like it had a big red nose, if for just a second.

    There is a Celtic tradition that mistletoe, which grew primarily on apple trees, was transplanted into oak trees. These "holy" oaks were considered sanctuarys. Mortal enemies meeting in the shadow of such a tree would, by law, have to throw down their weapons, exchange a kiss of brotherhood and depart in peace, giving each other a period of a whole day before they could consider taking up arms against each other again.

    My mother used to tell us that Santa Claus/father Xmas, was really Old Father England, who wore green, but who was really Old Father Winter/Old Father Mountain... Confused :) I was. Really enjoyed this one, bringing back such memories. Thanks Arith. On Mistletoe, it is still used in Western Herbal Medicine (though always makes me think of Getafix :D) as a peripheral vasodilator and mild sedative (hypotensive) so it would be a sensible prophylactic use at midwinter; and in mainstream medicine has been used from around 1921 to current date (as a fresh preparation of the plant, applied as an injection) to treat certain kinds of cancer. Would not surprise me in the least if our Ancestors knew of these uses, after all the AngloSaxons clearly understood that diseases could be airborne; suggesting a much greater medical skill than previously credited. Modern medicine may quibble with their explanations, but their observational skills were surely no worse (and probably much better) than ours. Nice one Arith. x

    LOVE this video ... especially the outtakes at the end.
    Great information. If I may add to the mistletoe info - Our ancestors were deeply concerned with fertility, for their plants and animals as well as for the families of their tribe. The future strength of a tribe was dependent on the fertility of all within their lands (Mormons, Catholics & other religions still use this as part of the church growth plan).
    Anyway, holly and mistletoe are symbols of that fertility, with mistletoe berries being semen and holly berries representing menstrual or post delivery blood (the goddess has just birthed the "son" or sun). The church couldn't get people to quit bringing in the plants, so they changed holly from queen to king and tried to erase all sexual and fertility overtones (part of the patriarchal re-visioning of ancient European symbols and goddesses).
    What's funny is in many cartoons for Christmas, Mrs. Claus is usually named Holly and her colors are blue and white - the same colors associated with Frau Holle, mother goddess of northern Germany who brought flax plants, spinning and healing to the Mesolithic Europeans.
    Wishing all a Good Yule

There was a twigs-bound outer frame covered with the skins just around the whole construction from the ground to the smoke hole on top. The bear's weight would make such structure to wobble. Bears seem not to like to step or climb over the shaking surfaces being attacked by angry huskies at the same time. Anyway, the people inside most likely would have enough time to pop-out with their spears.

    Here's my theory on why an (ever)green tree decorated with shiny orbs at the darkest time of winter is alluring: very simply it represents ripe fruit at a time of year when hunger is strong and fresh fruit would be a luxury. Fruit bearing trees being our most ancient prehistoric form of sustenance, the mother of all foods. A deeply embedded icon.

    Thanks for the video, very interesting...i think your right in the over all view...i wont speculate if every detail is right but i think your making good points. One thing about the mistletoe, its a parasite that can actually kill its host meaning a tree it grows on....and considering the germanic people viewed the world as one big cosmic tree its not strange that the tale of the death of Balder being like a forerunner to Ragnarök included the mistletoe being shoot by someone blind that was guided by the envy of Loki. Its close to the buddish view that desire created the world and its also interesting to see that it is desire that brings it down when it gets destructive. Another thing, here in sweden there is still a memory(some might still do it) to leave out porage around jul...but not for the cats but for the hustomte a small spirit often pictured as a small man with beard and a cap on his head living on the farm helping with the animals. The word hustomte basicly means "master of the property" and it was a helpfull spirit that could get angry if you mistreated the animals or forgot his porage....most lickly its an ancestor spirit tradition that stayed long into our days since i in my life time heard stories about it helping on farms.

    Great video as usual. You're talking about Odin as the pre-christian version of Santa, I can't help but wonder - wasn't Hulda the 'prototype'...? The goddess of snow, winter, death. It was her who originally led the Wild Hunt, right? She also rewarded good deeds, and brought gifts I believe...

      Happy holidays = no tradition and no meaning.

    •  5 лет назад +2

      @@mikanfarmer Happy holidays because not everyone celebrates Yule, or Christmas, or the Winter Solstice. During this season people celebrate so much stuff that "happy holidays" includes everything instead of just Christians with "Merry Christmas" or "gut Yule" for a handful of neo-pagans.

    • @mikanfarmer
      @mikanfarmer 5 лет назад

      @ Sorry if I touched a nerve, but I'm just so pissed off with this Christmas PC crap that seems to be enforced on us these days. Yule, the Solstice and Christmas go hand in hand for me. As a pagan Celt I can merge all three. With
      this 'happy holiday's thing' it just seems to downgrade and demean the whole point of celebrating this time of year. Others can celebrate their own festivals but we should hold this time sacred. With respect to you, and many thanks for the video. Namaste.

    •  5 лет назад +2

      @@mikanfarmer Oh no, not at all. I just wish "Happy holidays" because of the amount of people I know with different religions and different days of celebrations, as well as different purposes and meanings in their own festivities.

    Very informative video as usual, thank you. I have inherited some old (19th century) glass Christmas ornaments that are - Amanitas! I'm looking at one on the tree as I type this. Now I better understand the connection, though I always knew they grew under pines... We also have here a cross between Pere and Ruprecht called Belsnickel. He carries a whip, and gives out coal, too. He's Pennsylvania Dutch (Germanic), but locally has to share Christmas Eve appearances with the Wooka (sp) Man, who seems to be more from Eastern Europe? It doesn't happen so much anymore, but sometimes a family member will dress as one of these guys and stomp around and come to see if the children have been good, or else. Good scary fun.

    Thank you for creating a safe space to get this type of content. :) I would say that Christianity didn't destroy the Roman Empire, it substituted religion for the failing legions and resulted in the "Holy Roman Empire" which made the Pope and Rome relevant long after it would have become a ruin like Greece. The Vatican became the palatine and the Pope became Ceaser.

    It was believed, that mistletoe is the "wind's nest", a place where winds sleep from time to time. Hoddr might not be blind actually. There is no explanation why and how Hoddr has lost his eye-sight. Hoddr could be considered as an ancient deity of the Wind, he simply cannot open his eyes by himself - his eyelids are full of dust and enormously heavy. When you have a sudden windblast in your face, you close your eyes, right? :) And the world becomes dark at that moment - Hoddr guards the entrance to "another world". The etymology of the name Hoddr is not clear, but it can be just the sound that winds produce. Hoddr corresponds with a gothic Wehen or a Scythian Viy.

    •  5 лет назад +10

      I like that interpretation, thank you. Yes, I do believe Hoddr wasn't actually a blind god; that might be a miss-interpretation of the older texts. In Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus, Hoddr isn't blind, for instance. One of these days I would like to talk a bit about Hoddr when I make a video about Baldr and their battle.

      @ Even nowadays some Siberian shamans perform killing an embodiment of an evil spirit in the form of a snow sculpture with an ice knife. Such practices may include the killing of the winter spirit in the form of a snowman if the snowman does not thaw on time under a warm spring wind. I am looking forward to watching your video about the Baldr/Hoddr battle :).

      No need for reindeer.. just dry the mushrooms and the toxin is render less harmful,,, and if u want to … you can eat them and drink your own piss...or a friends even … hah.. as the lots of the drug goes out of your body in you urine... just like its processed in the reindeer. I have never tried it but those that have don't seem to find a lot of pleasure in the high... It is not similar to psilocybin at all.
