I agree. How quick the French forget what we did for them during the second world war. Remember too, that back in 2014 for the 70th anniversary of D-Day they originally forgot to invite our late Queen to attend the various events. Which meant that the then Prince of Wales actually attended most of the events as the invitation came through very late (after quite an outcry). With the Queen and Prince Philip only attending one event. I really have very little time for the French.

We know nowadays that the scars are often mental as well as physical but I wish I could make plain to you his undying admiration and regard for these men.
One more thing. If you do not see the wider cost of liberation having been paid by your family at large and this includes yourself, then perhaps you should.

I am not sure why the British Press has got the outrage bus out over this. The rumour is the United States wanted some way of their Paras getting a special memento of the 80 Anniversary jump so requested that French provide a special D-Day 80 stamp for their passports. Within all NATO countries, NATO troops from other countries do not need passports because of something called the Status of Forces Agreement which allows service personnel and in some circumstances their families to use Force ID cards in lieu of passports, in the case of British troops the MOD 90, France is a member of NATO so adheres to the agreement, I've been to a training area in the South of France when I was in the TA, never had a passport just my MOD 90, same as going to Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Poland

These books and others put a different slant on the “good war” myth that we have had rammed down our throats for decades. The authors are not pro Hitler or pro Nazi, they simply believe that it was beyond tragic that million lost their lives because politicians blundered into a devastating world war at the behest of powerful interests who never took part in the fighting.

@@DavidSmith-fs5qj I'd also suggest that people should watch the 1970's ITV documentary The World At War, something like 26 x 1 hour episodes. So some serious watching. But it really gives you what WW2 was about from those who were in the thick of it. Interviews with the likes of Eden, Rab Butler, Bomber Harris, Speer, Doernitz, Adolf Galland, and many more. I believe all school kids should watch this as part of their history education. Watching this documentary would put anyone off war for the rest of their lives...

To be able to send forces into the EU, in the event NATO is attacked, as part of a Article 5 response, we recently had to sign EU's Military Mobility agreement with the EU to allow our forces to enter the EU without passport and customs controls. Politco wrote -
"The U.K. has joined an EU military mobility project aimed at easing the transport of troops and equipment across Europe, signaling closer EU-U.K. defense cooperation after Brexit.
*Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign affairs chief, announced Wednesday that the bloc has accepted Britain’s application to join the project *, one of the biggest steps in cross-Channel cooperation since the U.K. left the union.

As much as it pains me to say this. We have never been in the schengen agreement. We have always had to show our passports to get in to Europe. Now whilst I agree they could of made an exception for the troops yesterday. Rules are rules. and personally I like getting stamps in my passport. It gives me a little history and memory jogger for when I'm getting on a bit and my memory is foggy. Plus I had to go everywhere on a NATO travel order during my military service as i didn't have a passport

As a french Canadian that have being staying in France several times and also visited England, i am ashamed that our great allied and brothers were treated that way by the the French customs.
I understand the feeling since i was subjected to a similar experience during my Air force years with the Canadian Armed forces.
I was coming back from an exercice at Barbers Point Naval Air Station in Hawaii to our own station at Canadian Forces Base Comox in British Columbia.
As soon as the propellers stopped turning on our CP 107 Argus patrol aircraft who was waiting for us at the bottom of the aircraft staircase?
You got it, ....our own Canadian Customs officers to greet us without the welcoming flowers necklace that greeted us in Hawaii where no one bother us with our passport but with a nice cold beer.
The senior French Customs officer could have easely made a friendly arrangement with the British paratrooper senior officer for this special event.
No wonder the Vichy government cooperated with the Nazi, they have an ego bigger than their head.

I was furious when I heard this story, but seeing in the video of what happened I have changed my mind. Could it be that the French welcomed our lads and STAMPED their passports with a smile and a lovely greeting? Or am I being sentimental? I always wanted my passport to be stamped when I travelled the world with work, but didn't always get one. It felt to me as I had not been their. I always wanted the STAMP of approval.

This was done during the memorial to commemorate the heroes of D-Day. Not afterwards.

It was a deliberate petty act.
Highlights of D-Day 80th anniversary. "And here we have the brave paratroopers queueing up in a field to get a stamp from a petty french bureaucrat."
