Swimmers Close to Great White Sharks: An April of Encounters

- April marks the return of many white sharks in Southern California. In this video, I film large groups of juvenile white sharks in shallow water, and a familiar large female shark makes her return. This time she's a little larger and I notice an interesting pattern between the smaller sharks and the larger more experienced sharks.
Plus, I film several human encounters, including a group of swimmers who aren't too happy about my drone when I warn them of a shark nearby. My drone is equipped with a warning beacon light and beeper but it's not easily heard on the beach.

I hope those swimmers find this video and realise how close they were to that shark and how the drone was only trying to warn them.

@Conway Twitter They don't have to recognize themselves. They'd likely remember the day they were all together, swimming at the beach, and this drone hovered near them beeping and they flipped it off and probably cussed about how rude and no privacy and more stupid crap. If anyone who was there saw this, they'd know it was them. It's not something that happens just all the time. Maybe now they'll realize that no one cares about watching them swim, or watching them at all, and instead of being so self centered as to think someone took time out of their day to peek at whatever they think they have, was actually trying to warn them so they didn't possibly get eaten.
It’s so respectful to both sharks and your audience that you do not dramatise the proximity shots I could imagine if this were on discovery channel how they would extract as much build up tension and editing trickery to fool the viewer ..
This channel may not be operated by a wildlife biologist or shark specialist either, but such footage is completely new to the study of the huge apex predators during a specific age range, and is therefore quite valuable information. That's my opinion anyhow. It is truly some exemplary footage, whether for entertainment or serious research efforts, and I hope to continue seeing this particular channel continue to grow.

Green MarineFive-0, I agree! The Malibu Artist is a talented filmmaker. Yes, you read correctly. I see him as a filmmaker. You are also correct about how his footage can be helpful to all of the shark professionals. I have watched every shark week since the beginning, but the newest ones for the past ten yrs have more true, important scientific information and such important and helpful tests, etc. Of course I also watch every shark documentary also. I even know 99% of the shark scientists, biologists, photographers, wranglers, etc. etc. I just remember them from YEARS of watching them.🤷🏽♀️ Cant help it, I am hooked. No pun intended. 👍🏼🦈

Great channel but I will never dive in any ocean after those vids. U can also expand business by showing encounters in Miami or worse the Bull Sharks of Brazil

Yeah and I love how their first thought was "he is looking at us" (so self centered it's mind blowing) even the alarm didn't trigger any thoughts past their egotistical mindset lol. I really wanted the shark to show its fin, just so they could have that "ohh" moment.

@@littlefox8352 That's not self centered that's literally the lived experience of women. Do you have any idea how many creeps are out there? Pretty much every single woman I know - myself included - has had one or multiple experiences with predatory strangers. It's perfectly reasonable - not "egotistical" or "arrogant" (like that other dude said) that their minds went to "some creep is trying to get creepy footage" rather than "someone is getting sick ass national geographic shots of a shark that's right fucking next to us"
@@HaIcyonic I disagree with some of what you are saying. I think there is a difference. Those girls were in the water, too far away to see them. He had an alarm going. They were literally swimming in water where sharks are. How smart do you have to be to put two and two together lol. However, I'm not saying there aren't creepy men. I was hired to do a tv commercial for a local milk company, and even tho I was meant to be up second and was there at 7:00am, they put me back, over and over, until late at night. Everyone left, lol even the cow, so it must have been my turn, right? But they locked up the building, I was all alone with 5 men. The lights were so bright I couldn't see them, only hear the director who was yelling at me. We got the shot, but they didn't stop. One guy then run forward and dripped milk down my chest, asking me to spit and say "mmm" on camera. I was thinking, "F I'm about to get #metoo-ed" luckily I was saved by someone who broke into the back door, and started yelling my name. So yeah I know about creeps! But most of the time when you are out in public, men normally just act shocked or they do stupid stuff like shake the hand of the man you are sitting with lol (back when we could shake hands lol). So I still think those girls put their ego over their common sense.

Sometimes I think it would be good if the drone was equipped with a "shark in proximity" recording that plays continuously until you turn it off just so people know but then I remember people are very dumb and may just flip out and make it worse than letting them stay unaware.
It's such a weird thing to think about too.

Im not from california or the USA but I know the white drone with smiling sharp teeth means there is a shark near by. All the way over here in Australia . So californians need to be sharing this guys channel to help awareness.
Sitting here wondering how close I get to sharks swimming in the channel between the island and the mainland where I used to live. I've found washed up pups so I wouldn't imagine they're too far. I'm guessing it's much more than I thought. Thank you for these videos. There's such a calm beauty in them that is greatly appreciated today. There's a meditative or even spiritual feeling to them that I just can't quite articulate.
I love these videos, i've always been fascinated by sharks 50% curious 50% terrified. These videos really shows that the sharks are just normal animals going about their life and we are visitors in their domain. I'm not sure if i'd dare to go in to the waters of Southern Cali.

I don't have much chance to see sharks, growing up in Hungary and living now in Germany, but I am so happy RUclips and great people make possible to still see these fascinating creatures.

Great shots here, and it just goes to show - whenever you enter the ocean, there is more often than not a shark somewhere! Really interesting as well. demonstrating that the presence of dolphins does not = the absence of sharks!

Not vicious beasts? There are literally hundreds of accounts of people being predated upon by these animals...I bet they feel pretty vicious when they are biting your limbs off....or biting you in half! A polar bear may look cute playing in the snow but when it wants to eat it'll tear a human to pieces without batting an eye....
Can't believe this doesn't have more views/you don't have more subs! This is seriously some phenomenal footage, it is incredibly well shot, edited, and narrated. My attention span is short as shit but I was captivated the whole time.

I have always been afraid of sharks. But you videos are so calming and beautiful. They have given me a great appreciation and respect for these beautiful marine animals. I want to add a little bit to my other comments.
I hope the middle finger gestures were recognized as the juvenile antics they appear to be. Sometimes people need protection from themselves. I wouldn't let them deter me from continuing to alert others, including those who have no understanding of what the drone is doing, and react on that basis.
My career as a major crimes detective changed every opinion and attitude I once had for our planet and all of it's inhabitants .

Thanks! I absolutely love your work. I live in Australia on the South Coast, in the town of Narooma (about 225 miles south of Sydney). There is an island called Montague Island, 5 miles off the coast that has a seal colony. So, I know there are White Sharks around, for sure. Every time I walk along the beaches here I stop and look, searching for sharks. Sorry for the anticlimax to my story, but have not yet seen one... But Mr Malibu Artist, you encourage me to keep looking and looking and looking. One day I will... and when that day comes I will post again. (I should ask for a drone just like yours for my Birthday. Lol!)

@R S if I were swimming in the water and a drone was hovering by making a noise I’d assume something was up. If it was just chilling there that’s different but he has like a warning noise go off soooo idk I’d personally think It’s common sense to head back to shore in this scenario🤷🏻♀️

I don’t know what kind of drone you have, but if it is DJI they offer a large, and audible microphone. It seems as though that would be more useful than a beacon, as you can then talk to the swimmers. Anyways, great video, quality is incredible!
I've always been fascinated by Great Whites. We have them visit our harbours in Nova Scotia. My neighbor was an old sea captain and he'd always see them in our waters long before people were aware of them.

When I was a teen, I thought sharks were way out there. I didn’t know I could have been very close to one or more of them when I was swimming near the break water. RESPECT and COEXISTENCE was a lesson I learned when swimming in Southern California waters.

I'm so glad I discovered this channel, it's a RUclips gem; really beautiful footage, not to mention a fantastic way to view their behavior non-intrusively.
Having partially grown up in Southern California (Santa Barbara) swimming in these waters, it really makes me wonder how many times I've been swimming in close proximity to sharks! I'm really glad I didn't know at the time; I would have been terrified. After watching these videos, they don't seem nearly so terrifying. (Though they should certainly be treated with caution and respect).

New way to tell when a shark is near: you see a drone filming you in close proximity.
Great footage and commentary... Interesting captures with the shark & human interaction. Those sharks are so close to the people and it is amazing how unlikely it is to be attacked by a shark... Very well done and subscribed.

Somewhere, on and orange planet, there is a silver creature with 3 tentacles narrating his space cam view of the humans. He notes their movements and their behaviors on his channel. Many other silver creatures give it the "up suction cup" , while a much smaller group give it the 'down suction cup".

I am not a scientist either. I am however, experienced with the offshore fishing grounds, recreational fishing that is, having begun exploring the nearby kelp beds and interior bays off the Oregon and California coast some forty years ago.
This information is new to me, but it makes sense too. During this time of year the larger pelagic species of fish as well as those that are nearshore fulltime come into the shallows, mostly rocky areas with plenty of kelp beds to spawn.
This was also the best time of year for putting meat in the freezer for the rest of the year at my family home and plenty of others. It's unbeatable for quality and purity compared to fish imported from overseas farms where little or no regulation exists to preserve the quality of products bought here in the US.

Those first 35 seconds are absolutely stunning! One of the best nature footage I've ever seen.
Not surprised at this at all. I grew up in Florida in the '60s and '70s and we went to the beach almost every Sunday. There were beach patrollers in the air and on the ground always monitoring the shark situation and one of them once told my dad that there was a certain distance they were allowed to get before they called people in from the water or blocked off the beach, but that if swimmers knew how close they actually were they'd never go in the water again!

Really well done. The last few months I've surfed within literally a couple of feet from 9-10 foot ones that multiple people verified size of. It's pretty common to see 6 foot ones but the 9-10 foot ones seem more rare and new. Beautiful and freaky. Never been aggressive but powerful experience...

I love these videos (though they will make me a bit nervous the next time I'm at the beach) but can't help but wonder what you'll do when the inevitable happens. Do you think it's just a matter of time before you capture an actual attack (hopefully just a quick nip)? Maybe you already have but won't post for fear of the reprisal it may bring to the shark community. I hope that day never comes and you continue to make these wonderful sea life videos. The knowledge you convey and the aerial shots are amazing. The drones are truly a gift to film making with all the wonderful new angles and possibilities they bring. A great upload as per usual. It was worth the wait. How far away are whilst operating the drone? Is there no way you can shout to the swimmers or are you quite a distance away? Or maybe attach a flashing light or something?
