Layout Tour 2017

  • I've been asked a number of times to show off my layout and if I'm honest, I've been reluctant because it isn't finished. Well, that's daft as it's years away from being finished but here is what it looks like now.
    Some quick basic facts: it's HO, based on the New Haven and in a 12' square room.
    2017 Plan
    I've been thinking about what I should put as my 2017 plan and this is a rough idea. It always changes, especially the video element as things take longer than I expect (I film more than one video per topic). My scale house is a great example of this as it was originally about 5/6 videos and ended up at 13! So these are areas that might feature in the videos:
    Grass
    Dock/Tarmac
    Remaining water
    Creamery Mock Up
    Trees
    City
    These may get done anyway in the background (and maybe the odd blog post):
    Treadwell
    Background Hills
    Road
    Air Conditioning
    Stock back on
    Sound

    I think it's a fundamental factor of our hobby that stuff takes time and often we never really know when we'll be finished. Frankly, who cares? We do this because we love it. It's our hobby, we can do things how we like.
    You have terrific layout Kathy. I envy your skills. Thanks for showing us............David

    I actually live in the city of New Haven in Connecticut and it will be the focus of my layout as well. Specifically the Connecticut shoreline from New Haven to Bridgeport, perhaps as far as NYC. I've got 22 x 25 for a layout in either O or HO. I am wrestling with that right now. There are a few excellent RUclips channels that spotlight the New Haven line. I am so enjoying and learning so much from your videos. Thanks for the inspiration as my wife was asking when I was going to finally make something. I've been laid up after a spinal injury and several surgeries and have not been too motivated to get going. Thanks to you and other makers on RUclips I am re inspired. thanks

      +Peter Norkawich I'm so glad I've been an inspiration. Sometimes we need someone just to give us that final spur on and I find RUclips invaluable. New Haven is a great live and I look forward to seeing what you decide to model.

    Kathy, No hurry, make strides as U are able. But keep the creative juices going.
    A bit model railroad layout is never really finished. There's always something more to add or change. That's no what keeps the hobby intrestering and fun.
    Thanks for sharing your beautiful layout. Have fun, and enjoy.

    As a fairly recent subscriber, I'm enjoying rummaging through some of your back-catalogue Kathy. The layout has a long way to go but it's going to be pretty impressive. Interesting to see a multi-level layout, not that common here. While you gain a lot of "real estate", you also end-up with way more work to do. You seem to be progressing at a fairly leisurely pace and it always looks like you 𝒆𝒏𝒋𝒐𝒚 your modelling. I think a lot of folks, particularly RUclipsrs, can forget that bit sometimes - that's the whole point of this hobby.😁
    Cheers for now,
    Dougie.

    Hi Kathy! You said it, "If it's finished, what would I do then?". I don't really know anyone who has a finished railroad. The few that said it was finished, well they ran trains for maybe up to a year and then soon (or later) the "itch" started. That is, the modeler's (or builder's) itch. Next thing you know, they have ripped out a whole section so as to build a different or updated section. And the cycle goes on. So, you build your layout at your pace and however you want it and we will follow along and work on ours as well. It was lovely seeing what you have shown us here! Thanks. Cheers, Dan

    • @KathyMillatt

    Miss Kathy, I've just recently joined you on your journey and I'm so very glad you posted this overview of your layout. I often get frustrated that things are not progressing a fast as I originally intended on my own layout (my 5th in 51 years). Thanks to a career ending accident at work in 2011, I now have ADD. Fortunately, model railroading is a perfect hobby for those of us unable to focus on one thing at a time! Seeing your overview, will now give me relativity to where you are on your layout with the projects you post. I'm just getting into static grass and that's where I started watching. You are going to be fun to follow and my own journey will be more pleasant as I do. Thank you for your efforts; and, may I say, you are doing New England quite proud!

    Hi Kathy. Looking forward to seeing more. Just do one thing at a time. I know what you mean about rushing things as I just recently dismantled my N gauge layout after a ton of work but I was too excited to get it done and rushed through it then I wasn't happy with it at all! so I am back to the beginning and despite undoing all the previous work I already feel so much better! Thanks again for another great video.

    • @KathyMillatt

      +Gary McArthur I think great modellers are those who will admit things aren't right, rip them out and start again. Rushing is my greatest enemy. And if you're not happy, it will always bug you.

    The animation is truly funny !! Great imagination.. The continuing track across top of the beige corner building to begin your El or high-line is perfect . Yes, and I caught the, let's just say, green characters hiding in plain sight...And I agree, it's gorgeous at 18:11. Finishing out it's always an honor when a Brit or European, models American RRing..The late Wolfgang Dudler of Germany modeled HO standard and narrow gauge American RRing. Superb ability he had for this !! I'm seeing similar with you......M

      Kathy Millatt my layout room is about 8 square feet larger than yours. With a little creativity, a lot can be achieved to make a great railroad. I tend to think massive layouts are impressive, but not achievable without lots of time I do not have.

  • @48firefox

    Take your time Kathy, this is going to be a fantastic layout when it gets finished , I've got a soft spot for American ho gauge although my layout is British 00 gauge in a garage it is a lot smaller than yours. I have quite a large stock of american locos and stock from the1950/60s era which I run from time to time, the pride of the line being a Rivarossi 'Big Boy' which looks fantastic with its two sets of valve gear. Relax, no one with a knowledge of model railroading would ever say bad things about a layout in progress. Most of our layouts will really never be done. I know of only a handful that are. I'm just starting another one. I'm keeping it simple (for once) and doing one level run around of about 132 sq ft.

      +David Curtis You haven't met some of my "friends"! Apparently my lighting sucks, my sky is awful, my trackwork sucks... it took me ages to start showing my layout off again after some really crushing comments.
      Now I just ignore it but when you are a new modeller it can be really difficult.
      I model because I enjoy it! Life's too short to listen to the nay-sayers.

      You model for all of the right reasons. All of the things you said about your layout applies to me so I started over. I have a good friend that has a finished "museum quality" layout but he had the time and money. Here is a web site where you can see stills of his layout. He has 55 switches - 103 buildings - 174 vehicles - 202 lights - 513 figures - 630 feet of track - 688 trees - 3160 total boards in all of the fences - mainline of 246 feet - 18 diesels - 2 steaners - 14 passenger cars - 117 freight cars - started construction in 1993 and completed in 2009. Nice bit of mum dancing from the first and third Kathys ! ;-) It might seem slow, but every little bit of progress IS progress nonetheless, and you're certainly further on than I am and my layout is way smaller. And you're shooting and editing and uploading videos into the bargain!
    I had a helix (the shape of a squiggle you do when trying to get a biro to work!) like yours, but, due to lack of space, it was too tight a radius, and after I'd finished it only a few of my locos could climb it! So it's now redundant.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад

      +davie maclean I do wish I'd realised how much drag a curve adds to a grade as my ruling grade is far more on the curves and can cause issues for my steam locos. I don't think I'd do a helix by choice now. I also would think very carefully about hidden track.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад

      +davie maclean Progress does seem slow, but as you say, I spend a lot of time on video editing. I'd be bored if I was finished though!

    • @daviemaclean61
      @daviemaclean61 7 лет назад

      I spent ages building mine and was only using one loco to test it out. Then I saw a video from (Bob) csxmad who was scrapping his layout and starting again because some fairly powerful locos couldn't manage what looked like a fairly shallow but curved incline. So I broke out some more locos and, sure enough, many couldn't make it!
      However, it's so strongly built (if I do say so myself!) that it's merely disconnected - I'm not taking it apart again!
      I don't think there is any such thing as a finished layout! Cheers.

    8:57: Just noticed you also have NCE power...Heads-up> Try not to push downward on speed wheel. We tend to do this when panicking over a head-on or some other fast ensuing loco danger, trying to slow down rapidly, this side of hitting red panic-button. What happens is eventually something related to the wheel axle breaks inside casing and we wind up only having the 4 speed buttons to accel-decel until fixed. I did. NCE sent me a new one free. I've not installed it yet and dormant with layout having to demolish it to relocate 1 yr. ago.. Also, be really easy on the casing screws. I managed to strip two threaded holes to boot and wound up with some duct tape on outside of PowerCab...Thanks for the prior thanks....Thanks, M...

    One more : 11:38 : such a gorgeous waterfront scene. Really great RR barge treatment, crane, whole peninsula hula ! I'm sure you know how intrusive the big silver air conditioner or whatever it is, is. I empathize with you needing it in any way. Is it at all possible to change the benchwork right under (are they ?) the NHRR DL9s ( I grew up on Long Island and lived through junior H.S. and H.S. Manhattan. I'de seen the real H'ell Gate bridge and rode NYC subways for some 3-4 decades, college in New England (Boston-NH-Maine)..in L.A. Ca, since '78, bassist Ret. 2001, now buddies with a real UP first-call engineer who recently allowed my to run a pair of 1:1 scale GenSets !! W H A T a T H R I L L ! ! ....
    Anyroad, as Ringo likes to say, can you get the A/C unit under the benchwork with a thin black drape in front of it ?...Then, except for finishing the blue-sky job, you could just about get away with telling everyone it's real shots from the 1950's ...! ! ...MH 4/11/17

      +Mark Harris I've tried putting the unit under the bench work and it won't fit. I would like to change it but air con is really rare here and very expensive. I did ask a builder to quote on a wall unit but it was too small a job and he never got back to me. One day I'll sort it but it's not at the top of my list.

This will solidify to the not so savvy viewer where you really are a-railroadin' ..........American truism: K.C. Jones is a not a folk tale. He really engineered for the IC (Illinois Central RR) and was not at the helm of his usual 10 wheeler, instead this day ordered to a 2-8-0 consolidation when he had the head on...That was big news back then..Why it stuck in people's craw..... inked, printed, newspapers....Love your stuff, ...M......or... Kathy, you've progressed well on your layout. I always enjoy watching your videos. Will you be powering your layout by DC or DCC? Also, may I ask in what scale your layout is modeled? I'm guessing it's HO, but the scale isn't mentioned anywhere in your video or in the RUclips written description.

    Hi, I have always modeled the British scene ever since I can remember. I stick with DC as it would be quite expensive to chip all my loco's. The other day on a whim, and maybe because it was only £75, I bought a Bachmann FA2 A and B unit in New York Central colours, DCC and sound too,, woohoo. Why, well my girlfriend lives in NJ and I visit from England each year for a few weeks, so that's my excuse. Now I am wondering if modelling a small American Railroad might be a nice way to introduce me to DCC.............I was watching your videos and wondering where you source your American loco's and rolling stock from? Anyway a great layout and I shall keep watching for more tips and tricks............Thanks, keep up the hard work.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад

      +stretchedits Hi, thanks for commenting. DCC is a great step but it can be expensive if you go the full sound route. There are a number of US outline traders in the UK. Model Junction, Anoraks Anonymous, Railroad Trading etc. The best thing may be to go to a North American exhibition, such as TVNAM in a couple of weeks or the NMRA convention in October. Where are you based?
      I bought a huge amount of my stuff on eBay when I first started but the dollar rate was much better.

    • @stretchedits
      @stretchedits 7 лет назад

      Thanks for your reply Kathy. I am in South Leicestershire. Not far from you I think. I agree the prices of DCC with sound are quite horrendous. For that reason I might keep my American collection quite small, as I still want to model the British scene too. I can convert my DC layout to DCC really easily so at the minute I can run one or the other on the same layout...........If my American modelling takes off I have room to build an American layout above my British one, similar to your multi deck layouts I have seen on RUclips, which might be nice. Anyway thanks for taking the time replying and I look forward to future tips and tricks in your videos.

    Very nice mix of scene content and use of the space. I'm curious how you would handle any derails in the track run under the eves where it's disappeared?

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад +1

      +Minok1217 Badly! Generally, it's not derails but just not enough power to get up the hill. In which case I send a helper down from the top. Otherwise, it's a clamber out through a. Rey small door. Not fun. Not recommended. However, I don't get many derails as the curves preclude all but the shorter stock.
      I always run my cleaning train from the top down the first few times and it's a relief when it appears the first time!

    • @InterCity134
      @InterCity134 7 лет назад

      Kathy Millatt yeah I imagine it's tricky. In the layout room I'm setting up I've got a bit of a geometry problem (don't we all) and have thought "what if i just go through the wall into the Soave under the roof and come around in that space?" I too have a "door" but the thought of having to contort around in there and having holes out of the climatized space has prevented me from doing more than pondering . I'll see when I get the track round to that corner. ; probably in over a year.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад +1

      +Minok1217 I probably wouldn't recommend it but I have no other way to get up that height in my current room and it unlocks a who's new level.

    Hi Kathy, have you built any laser cut plywood building kits (OO/HO) which represent brick structures. The natural wood grain is useful when the prototype is wooden but appears difficult to disguise on a brick or concrete prototype without overly thick painting. What are your views or suggestions, Jim

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад

      +freightuk I haven't really built many but the grain is annoying even sometimes on wooden buildings. Such as windows where all 4 sides go in the same direction.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад

      +freightuk I would try dabbing on a thicker paint but would have to experiment. If they've used a close grained wood then it's not too bad. Try a fine make up sponge to add texture.

    I DO HEREBY PROMISE THIS TO BE THE FINAL ONE (well....).
    Karthy I believe you are making one large mistake which no one does here in the states. You do need to have trains running in at least some areas and enjoy this aspect on the hobby along with the rest. You seem to be heading for near completion of all things scenic before running a railroad.. This is not good to do during the modeling time spent for a MRR project. I admit you likely will wind up with a nice, complete, clean right of way TO complete, juice up trackage and/ run trains. But, how many years of yearning to do you live with until that day ?!! Split your interest between the two..Anything up and running can be protected in many ways during construction time. You need to feel a RR growing, not just its environment. It's satisfying, inspiring and encouraging too, to see trains moving on the rail along the home you're giving it....But, boy you're good !!! ...Over and out, Mark

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 лет назад +2

      +Mark Harris I know loads of people in the US who never get round to running trains! For me, it's a time thing. I can get rolling stock out or I can do videos. Unfortunately I don't seem to have time for both at the moment. I have a friend visiting later in the year who's going to help with all that so I'm just leaving it for now.

      Thanks. Yes I know you are in the UK. I have been hunting down an N scale Transfer table for a long time. Years in fact. Heljan made an N scale table a very long time ago. Stopped making them when Walthers started selling them I think. If I could? May be find or get my hands on an HO transfer Table. I could us that as the model to scratch build and n scale table from. Then sale the HO when I have completed the N. I am in no hurry. I have not started on that yard yet. Once I have my hands on one I will most likely build the main yard. Thanks again. "HYDROCAL" I never particularly really felt any burning need for it over standard old plaster.. Yes, you can buy the Hcl-presoaked paper towels, but, if ready to use it immediately, asap, you can make very diluted plaster (a little thicker than drinkable. [Plaster IS shaken INTO water, not water into the plaster !] ) with a drop of vinegar in it. As long as your hill/Mntn./river bed/road supports (wire screen/foam) are in place, just slap 'em on..You'll still need to scenic on top either way. But one is W A Y more expensive !!! Can ya dig it ? Well, not with a scale-sized shovel, anyway..!....M

      I love the streamlined era. It’s just so iconic.

      Andrew Lambert when I started modelling, everyone I knew did American because the models were better quality than British ones. Certainly, the quality is superb on the models I have. They run at a crawl and have exquisite detail. Glad you enjoyed the show.
