Using thin ditra was the first method I used, because we always had more ditra scraps of various thicknesses than we did Kerdi board. I picked it up from The Floor Elf website initially.
Getting ready to do subway tile 4 x 16 with mosaic glass inside the back of my niches. Used Kerdi Membrane on the walls to water proof and Kerdi Niches. I have extra Kerdi and Kerdi Band I could use to bring up my glass to meet my tiles, however I thought you had to use in modified thinset for all Kerdi , I am going to be using modified for the field tiles. Will the strips of Kerdi band adhere properly using modified thinset?
Hi Edie, there could be some variables with the glass tile. Our Customer support team will know best. Mind giving them a call? US 800-472-4588 CA 800-667-8746 Thanks!
Newbie here... what size trowel do you use to adhere mosaics directly to substrate and what size trowel would I use to spread thinset to a thin backerboard if needed? Thx a bunch
Hi Jeff! You could use a 1/4" x 1/4" trowel or a 1/4" x 3/8" square notch and use the knockdown method, as shown in this video: instagram.com/p/CdwEkHNK6K2/? You could also ask the dealer or tile manufacturer if they have a specific recommendation. The main thing is to check for 95% coverage and make adjustments as needed. Hope that helps! 🍊
@Schluter-Systems North America / Amérique du Nord very helpful. Just to clarify tho.. will 1/4 x 1/4 cause squeeze thru in the mosaic at all? Thx again
It should, but again it really depends on the mosaic itself, depends on the size of the pieces, pattern etc. Best to confirm with the dealer or the tile Manufacturer to make sure they are not suggesting something more specific.
Don’t forget the option of a BWS movement profile in matching grout colour or can allow a different grout colour to your accent from the rest of your field cleanly and crisply
I just fix the walls on my kitchen, I decide to install wood walls so they can better support the cabinets, but I want to apply the back splash. Can I apply it directly to the wood or what do I need to do ?
Hi Robert, There are a few things we would need to go over with you and whether or not you require waterproofing. Do you mind giving our Product Support team a call? You can reach them here: US: 800-472-4588 CA: 800-667-8746 Thanks!
Hi Debi, there are a few options. You could do the same trick of building out the rest of your wall tile with KERDI-BOARD or you can install a profile to match the height of the mosaic with the anchoring leg under the mosaic. QUADEC, JOLLY, RONDEC or RONDEC-DB could all work. It might be best to give our Customer Service team a call directly so you can discuss your project in a bit more detail and they can advise from there. 800-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (Canada). Hope this helps!
Tip/option #5. Been using ditra lately to bring up my mosaics and real happy with it.

Option 1 was my favorite. Great video!
Thanks JC! 🙂

@@schlutersystems1 will do thank you for taking the time to respond... many on the tube won't bother👍

QUADEC-FS is a nice clean option for 2" wide deco up to 5/16" thick 👍
How do you attach the mosaic to the kerdi board? Do you then screw the kerdi board to the backer board?
Hi Debra, Both the tile and the KERDI-BOARD shim are applied with thin-set in this installation. 🍊

WHAT IF YOUR MOSAIC IS THICKER (10mm) THAN YOUR WALL TILE?

Thanks, I had the same question. My porcelain field tiles that I want to use are not as thick as the marble mosaic.
Ok great, hopefully our answer to Debi helps, let us know if anything else!
That’s assuming the wall is perfectly plumb
i hate when that happens heh
