Everton 1-0 Liverpool 1987-88 (Liverpool miss out on record run)

- Liverpool had equalled the record of Leeds from 1973-74 of going 29 matches undefeated at the start of a top-flight season. As fate would have it, standing between them and taking the record outright were Everton, who had inflicted Liverpool's only defeat of the campaign in the League Cup in October. Could lightning strike twice? Brian Moore and Ian St John tell us.
We still had some outstanding players but by 1988 when this game was played Peter Reid was playing from memory and even the mighty Trevor Steven was a mere shadow of what he had been in previous seasons. Still, a win against the other lot is always nice...
dont believe it just seen my grandad in the crowd. pure fu*kin class that
Football at it's best. Proper crowd proper fans, real football players. Great times .
Sheedy's retaliation on McMahon for McMahon's earlier hit on Pointon was wild!
And deserved. Could never stand him.
Reminded me of Jason Stathams flying tackle in mean machine
I remember this game so well. Unfortunately I had to work that sunday on the late shift but I talk my radio into work and managed to keep in touch with the match. Then I was on a meal break for the last 20 minutes of it but I had to go in the toilet to listen to it as there was too much noise in the canteen. But you should have heard the noise I made at the final whistle!!!!! Toffees 1 and that lot 0
Rough football back then, but it did get the players more up for the fight (in footballing terms) now every little thing is picked up on, so players don’t show the aggression they use to, to want to drive on to beat there opponents (again in footballing terms) in a way of retaliation. Now McMahon and Sheedy would be serving 3 game bans for them challenges, perhaps even longer, how times have changed.
The good old days when you could put a two footed tackle in ha
Any one who kicks the shit out of mcmahon is alright in my book.................Vinny Jones............he seems like a nice boy .haha
the Kopshites Were too smug that season. got taught a lesson. best Everton Team ever.
I think Liverpool had a right to be smug. By far the best team in that era. Won everything and dominated for many years and played awesome football unlike everton
Check out the 1986 and 1989 fa cup finals. Liverpool teaching the blueshite a real lesson in footy 👍
Or the 1988 one when a fucking alehouse team beat your so called awesome football.
@@johndoe-lt2bj Not as bad as bottling the title against a bunch of university students.
@@CoolDude-jp1kjseriously? Was you at either game? Liverpool barely had a kick for 60 minutes in the 86 final, Everton should have had a penalty. 89 yes you where the better side but football lesson?
Love it 💙💙💙
Everton are a quality team, proper English side they are, Liverpool have pi$$ed millions down the drain in the last decade with little to show for it, Everton are not far behind the top 5 6 or whatever they are called and only now have Everton found some investors, certainly a good time to be a blue and many promising youngsters to keep and eye out for. I rememer this game, was 14 years old watching it in my local pub in Ireland, it was packed and i remember the smoke and the yelling and sitting on a pool table watching the match, as they say once Everton touches you........
eric mcnamara loooool stfu
Everton are shit. At least lfc are looking up, not down....
Hahahahahahahahaha
What lmfaoooooo
Was Wayne Clark injured a lot of the time?
Was he a regular starter?
That season Liverpool lost only 4 games in all competitions: against Forest and Everton in the league, against Everton in the League Cup, and against Wimbledon in the FA Cup final.
Two derbies and a cup final. Bottlers
@@mango4ttwo635 Won the league lol. How are they bottlers. Clueless people

Bruce Grobelaar was a truly terrible keeper
+zander469 Better than any crap that came out of Everwin LOL
Giraffe Man Get Real. Grobelaar Wasn't fit fit to lick Big Nev's boots. besides, Big Nev didn't fix matches..
Even though Everton had arguably the world's best goal keeper through out much of the 1980's playing for them ? ...Hhhhm , Ok
Southall was the best British keeper in my opinion
@@simondelaney6483 Nah Ray Clemence was clear
It was slightly on the violent side that game. More like UFC than EFX and LFC.
The Merseyside derby, probably more than any derby in England, has a history going back a long time of bad tackles and violent play from both sides.
Love it when the victims get beat NSNO
The "victims" have been beating you routinely for decades. We'll let you have a couple of wins. You ain't got many of them
There was no way we were leaving Woodison park with that record..no way in the world.
Grob, it's so obvious. Tim Howard is doing it now. Tim's motive is to get a move (to the MLS) as he clearly doesn't need the money but the body language tells it. Just RUclips Big Nev to see who has the dignity.
This was Everton's cup final and that's as good as it got for them this season Liverpool strolled on to the league thumping Everton in the return at Anfield happy times
Did you actually go that season Eddie? This was the last game between the sides for the season. Had met each other four times and each team won twice. We were ravaged by injuries. Ratcliffe missed a huge chunk as did Steven and Sheedy. Everton got beat over two legs to Arsenal in the league cup semi final - so this game was hardly our "final"
Everton were champions before and after the game. It was your cup final
@@mango4ttwo635 Really? Didn't Liverpool beat everton in 2 fa cup finals haha and in a league cup final too
@@mango4ttwo635 Pal we got the league back off you in 1988 and then won it again in 1990. Beating Liverpool is evertons cup final. Get your facts right
